This was a very well written and directed movie. I encourage families to sit down and watch this together. It's tells a very powerful story of choices and friendship. It also has a few actors you should recognize if your over 30 years old! I'm glad I got a chance to watch this! Why wasn't this at the TriBeCa Film Festival??? All of the young actors did a wonderful job with their roles. Nobody over acts or under performs the entire film. The cast makes you believe each role. In today's Black America we don't find to many responsible role models anymore so it was good to see that life lessons were given in the movie.. I only hope that the youth hear what was being said. This movie should not fly under the radar as it has all the elements to draw you In and keep you watching the the end credits!
This movie is not for every Scouting audience. In parts, the language is occasionally harsh and there are some uniforming anomalies that will annoy BSA purists. Having said that, this movie fulfills a mission to inspire inner-city and/or low-income youth to choose the path of the Scout Oath and Law, the adventure and the bond of brotherhood. Pride, purpose, and determination win out over the so-called "no snitching" code of the neighborhood.
The depiction of young scouts being introduced to their first camping adventure has some accurate features and a few that are not common in most units (camping and hiking in full Class A, for instance), however the wonder at being immersed in nature and away from the harsh realities of the streets is very inspiring. I recommend this to Scouts, Leaders, and Parents who want to validate the decision to enroll their boys in Scouting in order to keep them on a path to success and a life lived according to the values of the BSA.

There are too few movies with inner city kids being shown as the heroes. Overcoming the pressures of everyday living in an otherwise violent situation. This movie is a good example of the ideals of Scouting. Presenting an example to encourage the youth of today to become better citizens. Introducing to them the laws of Scouting, trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. My one objection was the fight scene in the school, however that does show they are human and are kids confronted and overcoming unfair odds. If this movie entices only one child to better him or herself it has accomplished it's goal.
The writer/director did a fantastic job with this film. Born and raised in Richmond himself, he really brought out the crucial elements of the city, and particularly of Church Hill. Yes, the film is about an inner city black kid, but a viewer of any culture, age, or ethnicity will be able to relate to the themes of this story. That is what makes this film so beautiful. Triston's struggle is dark and dramatic at times, but balanced with light moments that will have you laughing. The plot is multi-layered, as it features the many obstacles of this young boy including his attempt to maintain his reputation in clashing social groups, his relationship with his incarcerated father and his hard- working mother, and a trauma that most children his age do not have to face. Definitely recommend it to any audience.
