Theater owners waited a long while for a robust and reliable release schedule, for a variety of films at the box office to attract more moviegoers and hopefully keep them coming back. Mission accomplished again this weekend where there’s something for everyone from kids fare to comedy to superheroes to Neon’s Together, an original horror, the first feature by Michael Shanks, and the sole independent film in an otherwise big studio-dominated top ten.

Together premiered at Sundance and Neon has been riding a wave of strong reviews ever since with a first teaser in February and stream of well received early access screenings. The distributor orchestrated a rare non-holiday Wednesday opening in the hope of generating buzz heading into the weekend, and it worked. The film opened to about $10.9 million and a no. 6 spot at the domestic box office on 2,302 screens.

Unusually, the Together release date came midweek, which is a release strategy that happens more often when a holiday weekend is impending. Because it debuted on Wednesday, July 30, the horror movie had already been in theaters for several days by the time its official opening weekend began.

Michael Mohan's 2024 horror thriller "Immaculate" is another entry in the well-worn "demon baby" genre, a horror sub-category that solidified in 1968 with the release of "Rosemary's Baby." In the film, Sydney Sweeney plays Cecilia, a young nun who moves into an Italian convent, following her own spiritual senses. While there, she shockingly becomes immaculately pregnant, and the convent sees her child as potentially divine. Of course, there is a shadowy conspiracy afoot, and Cecilia begins to suspect that some of the older nuns and the convent's local priest (Álvaro Morte) might be involving her in some sort of demonic ritual. The film has a gloriously shocking ending, although it's a little too arch and arty to be the trashy thrill it aims to be. It's unusual that "Immaculate" came out so close to "The First Omen," another demonic pregnancy thriller about a young nun.

Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore make a splash in the trailer for the Apple Studios movie Echo Valley.

Director Michael Pearce’s thriller will begin streaming via Apple TV+ on June 13 — Domhnall Gleeson, Kyle MacLachlan, Fiona Shaw, Edmund Donovan and Rebecca Creskoff round out the cast.

Echo Valley centers on Kate (Moore), who is in the process of grieving a personal tragedy when her daughter, Claire (Sweeney), arrives at night covered in blood following a fight with her boyfriend. This leads the mother-daughter pair down a dangerous path.

“I know what you did,” Gleeson warns in the trailer. “I make one call, and all roads lead back to you.”

Later, Sweeney begins to have second thoughts about her decisions. “I’m freaking out right now because I read that bodies float,” she says in the footage.

The Immaculate soundtrack is available on vinyl from Terror Vision Records in partnership with Lakeshore Records.

Talk about following a tough act. Sony's Until Dawn opened this week, days after Ryan Coogler's Sinners defied horror movie expectations both critically and commercially. Until Dawn will struggle to hold its ground in its debut weekend, while Sinners is expected to blaze past box office projections, like it did in its debut frame. Inspired by the video game of the same name, the movie opened to mediocre reviews and not-so-promising audience reception, which certainly doesn't bode well for its future. Simona Tabasco have been cast in the satirical horror-thriller Corporate Retreat, Variety reports.

She joins the joins the previously announced Lilly Krug (Plane), Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction), Ashton Sanders (Moonlight), and Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off).

Described as “a gory mix of The Menu and Saw,” the film centers around a group of corporate executives whose team-bonding trip turns into a bloody fight for survival against a vengeful retreat leader.

Principal photography is set to begin in June with Aaron Fisher (Inside the Rain) directing from a script he co-wrote with Kerri Lee Romeo.
