I'm conflicted...

I'm familiar with Berger's works so I have no issues with the slow pace of the film.

Beautifully shot but I would not venture to call this film a "romantic film". Now, I'm willing to say some things may have gotten lost in translation (English) but romance, this is not. Why? Well, the dialogue is heavy on sexual innuendo and tension. That yells infatuation or simply a sexual fling. I was waiting for both characters to get into heavy dialogue (even for 5 minutes) instead of the incessant jocular jock/frat dialogue (considering the ending which has me a little confused).

The chemistry between both lead actors is incredible. Their interaction felt very natural which is a massive plus for the film. The sexual tension was also palpable. But there was something else missing (and the subtitles were far too quick for me). I'm just so conflicted about this film: what are the lessons? What's the objective? Is this simply a summer fling or long term? What's the attraction - beyond the physical - of these two characters? What bonds them? I'm guessing acting like teenagers?

Laws of attractions

How beautifully a summer can be spent with best friends who are totally attracted to each other. Nuances of being Gay are well portrayed in this film. Their jokes, subtle jealously, laughs and negotiating their relationship with each other all through was very well played by Javier Orán and Lautaro Bettoni. They have become my hot favourites, its like I know them up close and personal. Some of the moments in the film are so pure and basic elements of being in love are shown. Marco Berger has done a fantastic job of bringing out these actors who are so free in those scenes and have long conversations without cuts just felt so beautiful, natural and it was like watching their own personal videos. Aww..I already miss them...Lots of love.

Simply excellent - a step forward in Berger's career.

It is difficult to describe this film, as it was excellent in its simplicity. I feel that it was very much what Berger does, and at the same time it departed from his traditional films to present something better and more positive.

Of course Berger is a filmmaker more focused on everyday life than in specific events, so people who need a plot rich in action may find it boring. For others, like myself, there is profound beauty in 'life as it is'. So the plot is really fantastic in its capacity to contribute to a great film in spite of its simplicity.

Another point is that his films are essays on sexuality and gender, and those dimensions are very much nested in local cultures, so this is much better understood by fellow urban Latin American viewers like myself.

In that sense, I think that the development of the two main characters, in their psychological complexity, was also a great accomplishment. They are a delight. Moreover, without affecting the plot's simplicity, the dialogues are charming - humorous and very intelligent, and the acting of the two leads is phenomenal. All this gets integrated into a more mature film of this author, one that, despite the sexual content of conversations, is still deeply romantic, producing a great romantic comedy delivering a message that even today is somewhat avant-garde.

Marco Berger's best film

After a decade of great films exploring male sexuality, Marco Berger (Plan B, The Blonde One) is back with his best and most accomplished film to date.

This time around he delivers an inspired romantic comedy packed with funny moments and excellent performances from the leads (Lautaro Bettoni and Javier Orán) as two childhood friends reunited as adults.

There is a lot to like about this film.

The long shots and conflict-free script create the perfect intimacy set for their friendship to flourish into something more. I also enjoyed the soundtrack (which elevates some of the key scenes) and the strong supporting cast.

One of the best gay films in recent memory. Highly recommended.

Truly a gem...

A love story, tantalizing and magnetic to attract the lead characters closer to the inevitability of their desires and affections for one another. Marco Burger is a master of this genre of creating and bringing emotional tension to a climax. A tender romance that does not disappoint. The actors are brilliant in their chemistry and uncontrived. There are moments when their interactions step off the stage and seem convincingly real. A real life, with real people and real consequences. And sweet resolution, resolved by gentle emotions and romance, supreme and rare. This film is memorable, leaving you fulfilled but still wanting more. Perfectly balanced, sensual and satisfying cinema.

Mediocre

I can totally get the slow pace of the film. The ambient and atmosphere work together to make you feel comfortable with that. The actors are great. Chemistry? On point. The premise of the story? Cool. The development of it... Not so much. There's actually no substance. It's short of profund and in-depth dialogue between the main characters. They fool around all the time and never get to the point. That's ok if it means the story is going nowhere also. But all of a sudden you get advances that cannot for the life of me point what has been worked to achieve them. There's an abuse of cuts on the cinematic. That serve no purpose besides confusing the audience. Not really a compelling story. Too bad. It could have been great.

Anticipation and that 'feel good' sensation: it works!

Argentine Writer/Director Marco Berger once again repeats the same formula used in his previous productions such as 'Plan B' (2009) and 'Hawaii' (2013): two young men, both sexually fluid, who were childhood friends and eventually develop a deep love for one another. Nonetheless, it works!

This film touches on one of the ultimate gay fantasies, where true, honest, and eternal love may exist between any two men. The dialog and intimate visual imagery, without a single sex scene, are superb and hit the mark by creating anticipation throughout the narrative and that 'feel good' sensation in the end.

Astronaut who's afraid of outer space.

There are some frustrations that this film goes nowhere, or too slow. But if you're familiar Berger's filmography, this is what his trademark is. It's subtle, quiet, grounded and conversation-heavy. But i think that's what makes his films special. It's the opposite of the stereotypical grandiose hollywood films.

And it's the same with The Astronaut Lovers. The whole film just the 2 leads talking, playing the game of chicken. It's cute, romantic and heartwarming. Bettoni and Orán did a very good job as the leads, the soundtrack is amazing and lots of beautiful shot. But i love the most is the writing, it's honest, sincere and compassionate. The characters are well developed and genuine which makes the whole story flows naturally. The writing is everything but shallow.

10/10 Berger's best film. I LOVE the easter eggs of Berger's past films.

Raw emotions keep you focused

I just finished The Astronaut Lovers (Los Amantes Astronautas), and honestly, I really enjoyed it. It's a beautifully shot, slow-burn romance that plays with themes of friendship, identity, and the blurred lines between platonic and romantic feelings.

The story follows Pedro, who comes back to Argentina for a vacation and reconnects with his childhood friend, Maxi. What starts as a lighthearted, almost teasing dynamic between them slowly unravels into something deeper. The film doesn't rush anything-it lingers in quiet moments, loaded glances, and the kind of tension that makes you hold your breath.

Lautaro Bettoni and Javier Orán have fantastic chemistry. Their performances feel natural, making every interaction between them feel authentic, even when their characters are caught up in confusion and miscommunication. There's humor woven into the dialogue, but it never undercuts the emotional weight of their connection-it actually makes it feel more real.

Visually, the film is stunning. The coastal setting is the perfect backdrop, creating this sense of openness and freedom, but also a quiet loneliness that reflects what's happening between Pedro and Maxi. Marco Berger's direction is subtle, letting the emotions simmer rather than forcing them, which I really appreciated.

I love how the film explores attraction and desire without needing grand gestures or over-the-top drama. It's intimate, honest, and beautifully restrained in a way that lingers with you. If you're into queer cinema with a strong emotional core and a thoughtful take on love and self-discovery, The Astronaut Lovers is definitely worth watching.

It's all fun & games until someone gets hurt

Astronauts Lovers is a truly beautiful film. Another win for Marco Berger! I've been collecting his films since Plan B. Marco knows cinema and he's very prolific at romance and this film does not disappoint. His brand are beautiful men entangled in compromising situations no labels needed. And that is what makes his films so relatable. This latest one exudes an organic chemistry that will take you on a rocket ship out of this planet. It's a very simple yet very effective art. Here's to Marco Berger! Congrats on another win! I for one can't wait for his next! The romantic moments are truly magnificent and Marco has a great eye for setting up joys and heart breaks like nobody's business.

Horrendously boring

I put up with this inconsequential rubbish for forty minutes. I clicked to have a look at how much more of the film there was to go and realised I would never be able to stand it for another seventy minutes more and flicked out. The two leads were attractive but the shadow boxing around whether they'd get it on or not grated after a while. Teasing and barbed, clever small talk just started to get on my nerves. Another problem was that there was so much dialogue that the subtitles flashed up for such a short time per sentence that I had to concentrate on them and not on the action or the characters on the screen. I speak and understand some Spanish but this was beyond me. So, I have no idea if the two lads got it on together and I don't care. Marco Berget is become a cliché of himself. I loved The Blond One but since then his output has been zilch that's interesting. I actually wondered if the actors were embarrassed about having to speak these dreadful lines. Don't waste your time.

Playfully Flirty Sexual Banter

Pedro travels from Spain to Argentina for a beach vacation at his extended family's home. Present are his cousin and a small, similarly aged group - including a childhood friend, Maxi, who has just broken up with his girlfriend. Pedro and Maxi's playfully flirty sexual banter is fun, highly entertaining for all, and takes on a life of its own over the course of the vacation.

The movie revolves around the fascinating rapport and connection that builds between Pedro and Maxi, they continually straddle the space between bro-banter and flirtation that leaves everyone, including the viewer, wondering just how far they are going to go...

QUIET. INTIMATE. HONEST.

Quiet, intimate, and emotionally honest.

The Astronaut Lovers is a slow but rewarding film that explores male friendship, attraction, and identity with subtlety and care. The performances feel natural, and the chemistry between the leads carries the story. There's not much plot, but the emotional tension builds in a way that feels real and personal. It's a film that trusts the audience to feel rather than be told. Not for everyone, but deeply moving if it hits you right.

Marco Berger's best film.

Synopsis: The line between reality and fantasy is blurred when two friends are reunited. Pedro is openly gay and Maxi is curious, let the role play begin.

Lower budget copy of Call Me By Your Name

This is a clear rip off of Call Me By Your Name... not sure if the director has some scat fetish because I don't know any new blossoming couple that talks about poop so much?? Very strange script they tried to make artistic. I've never heard any gay men talk about penises and poop so much. I have no idea why this movie has such good ratings because my friend and I don't understand what this has anything to do with astronauts, figuratively or creatively. I don't know who wrote the script or what their deal is. I can't say I take this movie seriously. Watch at your own risk if you want to hear people talking about wiping their peer and pooping.

An amazing film with great dialogue and heart

I loved The Astronaut Lovers (Los Amantes Astronautas) and find it to be one of the most enjoyable queer film I have seen in many years. It's a slow-burn romance that has gorgeous cinematography and explores themes of friendship, identity and repressed romantic feelings.

The story follows Pedro and Maxi, childhood friends who reconnected. What started off as lighthearted bantering, slowly evolved into deep attractions that became undeniable.

The two leads, Lautaro Bettoni and Javier Orán are brilliant and have wonderful chemistry. Director Marco Berger handled the tone of the film perfectly. The two leads' performances feel natural and authentic. There's humor woven into the dialogue, but it never undermines the emotional weight of the scene, and the dialogue is intelligent and keep the audience wanting for more.

The cinematography of the film is stunning. The seaside locale is the perfect backdrop, creating a sense of freedom for self-exploration. Marco Berger's direction is subtle and masterful.

I highly recommend this film for fans of queer cinema with an interesting dialogues, romantic intrigue and a thoughtful take on love and self-discovery, The Astronaut Lovers is definitely a rare gem that is to be savored slowly.

The Astronaut Bores

This nearly two hour Argentine yawn fest deals almost exclusively with two adult men behaving like teenagers in both their often inane dialogue and interaction with one another. Javier Oran plays Pedro, a gay man who pursues Maxii, who at 30 something can't seem to make up his mind about what his sexuality is. Maxii is portrayed by Lautaro Betonni. It gets to the point where the viewer could care less what the final outcome of their potential relationship is. Despite decent performances by both actors, the chemistry is not that good nor is the dialogue with which from which they had to work. Marco Berger is the architect behind this project. He wrote and directed it. However, this certainly was not one of his best cinematic efforts. In one of his other pictures, 'Horseplay', there were many more characters which worked better in terms of making that film far more entertaining than this one with only two, mismatched souls. Will they end up with each other or not? Who cares?.

I thought the ending, which I won't reveal, made 'Astronaut Lovers' (a ridiculous name btw) even worse. Don't waste your time.
