Great acting and cinematography but something is missing

While I have a certain fondness for the movie BIKERIDERS, I still find it to be a rather mediocre title. There's undeniably something off about this film. Despite its fantastic cinematography, perfect locations, and meticulously designed decors, the movie fails to leave a lasting impression. It features a plethora of talented actors, making its failure seem implausible. Yet, by the time the credits rolled, I was left feeling utterly indifferent. Nothing from the supposed storyline stood out or stayed with me.

Even with Michael Shannon, who is one of my favorite actors, the impact was minimal. His brief appearance was so inconsequential that the film wouldn't suffer if it were entirely omitted. Sadly, the same can be said for the rest of the cast. They were equally underutilized and forgettable. This film, with all its potential, ultimately ended up being a colossal waste of talent and opportunity. Despite its visual excellence and strong cast, it fails to deliver a memorable or impactful experience, leaving audiences with a sense of squandered potential.

A Nice story but....

But I never felt tension or emotions, it was like a flat rollercoaster. Jodie Comer is out of this world, she cans play whatever she wants, she's awesome. And you mr Director, you had Michael Shannon and You do nothing with him? Really?

Besides that, acting was nice, photography did the job, music was ok, dressing was cool... I mean, this is and average good movie that I won't remember in a week or two. There was nothing special about it, nothing to highlight. I don't regret at all going to the cinema and I loved watching Jodie on the big screen, but that's it. In my opinion, the movie lacks of emotions and charm.

Where's the story?

Brilliant acting, brilliantly shot, but where's the story? Having Jodie Comer's character as the erstwhile narrator was a brilliant deviation from tradition, but who's the hero and who's the villain? I know it's based on a book and therefore a true story, but you can bend a story to fit narrative arc. This film has no clear protagonist and the supposed antagonist is only in it briefly as a cardboard cut-out "victim of circumstance". Also, we never clearly establish any of the motives of the main characters. Why are they in the club? Why do they rebel? What are their goals? More importantly, why are any of them riding motorcycles and why don't they just drive cars? This is clearly a key point as I'm guessing the Chicago winters are not fun to ride in.

As a keen biker, I loved the characters and the motorcycles, but this was a series of vignettes rather than a cohesive story.

Style over plot, with strong lead performances

As "The Bikeriders" (2023 release; 116 min) opens, It is "Kathy interview 1965", and Kathy retells the story of how she met Benny, member of the (fictitious) Vandals motorcycle club in Chicago. We learn that Johnny, President of the Vandals, was inspired by watching "The Wild One" starring Marlon Brando. At that point we are 10 minutes into the movie.

Couple of comments: this is the latest from writer-director Jeff Nichols ("Mud", "Loving"). The movie's story line is inspire by a picture book of the same name by Danny Lyon, covering motorcycle clubs in the Midwest 1965-1973. The plot is thin, and this is more about evoking the spirit of motorcycle clubs found in "The Wild One" and "Easy Rider". The good news is that the lead performances are strong, and it is a pleasure watching Austin Butler (as Benny), fast rising British actress Jodie Comer (as Kathy) and Tom Hardy (as Johnny). The movie also features a quasi non-stop soundtrack of music from the late 60s-early 70s. Last but not least, you would never guess it, but the movie was shot entirely in and around Cincinnati (where I live), mostly its suburbs and exurbs. Kudos to Film Cincinnati for landing that production here!

"The Bikeriders" was shot in Cincinnati in Fall of 2022, and premiered at the 2023 Telluride film festival to positive claim. Alas, as a result of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, the theatrical release was pushed back until June of 2024. The Saturday early evening showing where I saw this at here in Cincinnati was attended so-so (about 10 people). If you are in the mood for a motorcycle club movie evoking the 1960's, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.

I was really looking forward to seeing this, I mean look at the cast..... but...

We were both looking forward to watching this. Great actors, and a seemingly engrossing story. Told from the view point of Jodie Comer initially we both thought it got off to a good start. It was atmospheric of the era, and there was nothing wrong with the clothes or cinematography.

But it was actually a dull story. Dull. A story of a biker gang in the late 50' early 60's. The gang and their colours were everything. They weren't particularly'bad', the bad ones come later, after returning from Vietnam- and the increasing drug culture. Austin Butler now appears to have one particular way of acting. He wants to look like James Dean (he does have a passing resemblance), and I find him stilted and too full of angst. Jodie was ok, although why you would hang around with these people - the life appears one of poverty and strife. Love Tom Hardy, but it was very much a brooding role. Burdened with the role of leader, it could only end one way. We stuck with it, but frankly, we won't ever watch it again.

I THINK MOST ARE MISSING THE POINT..

This is my first IMDB review, I didn't feel compelled by the movie as I've seen a ton of movies but I feel that most people were expecting more from this movie & just not getting it. The Bikeriders is just merely showing us a place & time in America 1965-1973 etc. Just a portrait of a time that most of us aren't familiar with as it wasn't supposed to be a hardcore crime drama etc & I think ppl were let down by that. It's showing us that this motorcycle gang are not a bunch of tough guys to the core, sure you have Hardy & a few others that are willing to fight but the others are just plain scared to throw down & we are shown that because that's what Danny Lyons saw. Just because they are riding motorcycles & look a certain part doesn't mean they're not somewhat normal people. It's more of an observation piece of a biker club in that moment in time with some drama, some rough talk, an occasional spat etc.

At first I thought Jodie Comer's accent was over the top & her performance also but after a few watches it grew on me. Hardy is great as usual as the alpha leader of the crew but he doesn't really want a lot or any trouble he just wants this to be a club & have a respect thrown his way. Now Austin Butler was the biggest letdown for me and by no fault of his own as I think the script/material let him down. It's somewhat of a joke as we're shown, I'll die for this club one minute, then another few minutes I'm not like this, this isn't who I am is who I am etc with no rhyme or reason. It was just nonsensical in a way more than anything. So just take it for what it is, showing us a slice of life most of us don't remember or understand fully and it's just being portrayed for what it was in that moment in time. All in all it's a hard 7, 8 at best because I respect the director & cast. They couldn't went a lot harder as I was expecting but I think that was never the point. Watch & Enjoy for what is!

In the words of the Immortan Joe: "Mediocre!"

Remember that scene in "Mad Max: Fury Road" where the one war boy is given Immortan Joe's own pistol, has his teeth chrome-painted and told "I will carry you myself to Valhalla!" then he's thrown up on the war rig and promptly stumbles and loses the pistol? And Joe's brilliant response, "Mediocre!" totally deflates the war boy? That's what this movie is, except it's the audience that gets deflated by this stumbling mess.

What has happened to Hollywood that nobody can write a decent screenplay anymore? I just don't get it. The acting is fine (especially Jodie Comer - she is a revelation; and Austin Butler is imminently watchable even though he hardly says anything), but there just isn't any meat on this corpse for them to dissect.

The first few moments of the movie were promising and I felt like, "Yeah, throw him up on the rig, go war boy!" There are a few really nice shots of cool vintage items with a slick song in the background. It reminded me of Tarantino and my pulse quickened. Unfortunately, that was the only time I was inspired by this at all, because it promptly stumbles and has Austin Butler getting assaulted in a bar for being a biker. Really? This tired cliche? And it never got better.

A few points to discuss: To start with, the bikers in this club wore the "1%er" patch. I am in no way anything like an expert, but from what I understand that patch was worn by true criminal biker gangs. This movie never ever tells us anything about that aspect or even mentions what the members do for a living if they aren't criminals. In fact, we are not privy to their personal lives except in the most superficial of ways - we don't even see Butler and Comer's characters get married. Where these guys truly criminals? Because this felt exactly like an after-school club they joined to put on their college applications. If they weren't a criminal organization (which the true gang this was based on was), then those guys were in it purely for the love of motorcycles. But that is not communicated at all. Zero love. There are a few moments where the movie gestures toward it, but they are fleeting and far far from passionate or inspired. We are never made to feel that love.

In fact, for a movie called "The Bikeriders," there is precious little about bikes or riding. I was never once inspired by this movie to go out riding. Never once. No cool shots of them riding, just one chase scene that again, was nothing but a cliche. It doesn't explore whatsoever the ins and outs of being a bike rider in Chicago. We don't see one winter day in this movie - yet it takes place over some ten year time span. What do these bike lovers do when they can't ride? Chicago winters suck. Not a single word about it. They liked to get together and race, but we aren't privy to any of the race ins and outs. Even - and this is a very telling point - Jodie Comer's character mentions the "rules" of the gang twice and how all-important they were. We are NEVER told the rules. WTF???

This was more uninspired garbage from Hollywood. Passionless, overly cautious, mediocre... like most of everything else from the big studios these days. I was so disappointed. I went home and watched a few late 60s and early 70s biker films on Amazon Prime. One that I really liked was called "Angels from Hell" - a super b movie that does more in any given five minutes to show the culture of an outlaw biker gang than "The Bikeriders" did in the whole 2 hours. Even Kathryn Bigalow's first movie "The Loveless" is better than "The Bikeriders" for communicating the mindset of outlaw bikers.

People compare this movie to "Goodfellas" and I don't get that at all. There is nothing whatsoever dangerous about this movie. Nothing whatsoever traumatizing. Also nothing whatsoever inspiring.

I guess I'll have to watch Fury Road again... this one is more like feeble road. Six stars just for the acting and costumes, but I'd probably go 5.5 if I could.

Lacks direction

At first The Bikeriders feels like a great modern day homage to those classic Scorsese gangster films.

While Austin Butler is meant to be the star, he's barely present for half the movie. Although fret not because the lack of 'Elvis on a Bike' allowed for Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy to lead the pack and shine with their performances.

In fact, I could easily say that this is quite possibly Comer's best performance to date.

Unfortunately, it then seems to lack any direction or identity and then, quite frankly, fizzles into something that's just plain boring.

The Bikeriders is definitely the type of movie your Dad will watch before he forces you to watch it and then upon a second watch, realise that the film is just fine, because that's what it is... just fine.

If you like old-school movie making, Bikeriders is for you.

Old-school cinematic storytelling, let's have more of that! With filmmaking becoming more about IP and easy (lazy) hit machines at one end of the spectrum, and indie movies (which I love) so esoteric and specific that they're unrelatable at the other end; a film like the Bikeriders isjust what we need to lean into and celebrate. More, please, Hollywood.

Beautifully shot Americana and great performances from entire cast, especially Comer, Butler, and Hardy. Subtle character work, actors given the space to land both the dialogue and the silence.

Also, a rebuttal on the "it's nothing but vibes" critiques ... that's not the insult you think it is :)

Looked great... but that was about it!

I left the theatre feeling pretty underwhelmed and non-plussed by this movie.

I had really high hopes with the cast and they all deliver good performances (with Butler doing his best James Dean impression) and the characters all showed initial promise. It just lacked a bit of heart for me and kind of drifted along with no real central story or jeopardy.

I got excited when I heard people comparing this to Goodfellas as it's one of my favorite films... but that comparison falls incredibly short. It was very style over substance and I'm starting to feel like Tom Hardy is getting so typecasted these days - bordering on Staham-esque. This could have been a brilliant movie, but sadly for me it missed the mark.

Disappointed

"The Bikeriders" promised an adrenaline-fueled ride, but unfortunately, it fell short in delivering a compelling story. From the onset, the narrative felt disjointed and lackluster, making it difficult to engage with the plot. The inclusion of a female narrator seemed unnecessary, as her commentary did little to enhance the viewing experience, especially given that the storyline itself was minimal and uneventful.

The film's climax, or rather the lack thereof, was particularly disappointing. A satisfying ending requires a buildup of tension or significant events throughout the film, but "The Bikeriders" failed to deliver on this front. Instead, it meandered aimlessly, leaving viewers waiting for something substantial to happen, only to be let down by a lackluster conclusion.

While the acting was passable, it did not compensate for the weak storyline. The performances were decent but did not stand out or bring any added depth to the characters. This made it difficult to connect with the protagonists and invest in their journey.

Overall, "The Bikeriders" was a letdown. The lack of a coherent story, unnecessary narration, and unsatisfying ending made it a tedious watch. Despite the okay acting, the film felt like a missed opportunity to deliver an engaging and thrilling biker movie. I found myself counting down the minutes, eagerly awaiting the end credits.

A bit dull

I love Sons of Anarchy and the Mayans so I was looking forward to this movie but I have to say it's a little bit dull. It's not a terrible movie but I just expected more especially from a biker type movie.

It has a great cast although I have to admit Jodie Comers voice/accent she put on for this movie really grinded on me and it felt nauseating to listen to, that's just my opinion. For the record I do think she is a great actor though.

The story didn't really go anywhere and I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, and well......it just didn't. The story just seems to plod along with no real direction or plot. Even now after watching it, I'm still not sure what this movie was trying to achieve?

I think this was a missed opportunity and it could have been so much better. It's worth a watch for the good cast, but just don't expect to be gripped by the story because there basically isn't one.

Dissapointing movie

Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Bikeriders" (2023) was a disappointing movie for me given the excellent movies writer, director Jeff Nichols made before ("Take Shelter", "Mud"). This movie features all star cast with great ones like Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon, Jodie Comer. As for Austin Butler - he gave the weakest performance in my opinion. The best one was by Jodie Comer. But the worst parts about "The Bikeriders" is the story and storytelling. The story itself is nothing special, we did have seen it many times before - even if it based on true events its nothing to write home about. The storytelling did drag - at running time ~2 hours this movie isn't very involving. But some good acting, some nice and tense scenes here and there saved this movie from being below average.

Overall, "The Bikeriders" is one that can be skipped, unfortunately given the very talented cast and director / writer at the helm. A disappointing movie.

Birds of a Leather...

It's fair to say that certain types will stick together, come hell or higher tide or stormy weather, and they might cause a little friction, with their image and depiction, rubbing up those who take umbrage with their measure. It's a scene that's been repeated over time, on this occasion it's a motorbike they climb, with an attitude that hangs, there is a leadership of gangs, that gets challenged on occasion, like a feud. At its heart there is desire to control, not just machine but all the followers enrolled, like an army on two wheels, cross their tracks, there's no appeal, as the seasons turn, the novices get bold.

Not quite as engaging as you'd have liked - and why can't American folks play American roles? Perhaps they can't do the accent.

Take it for what it is.

Going to keep this short and sweet, we don't get movies like this anymore.

The movie is raw and the actors do an amazing job.

Great work by Tom Hardy and Jodie.

Austin is great too but I was more interested in Hardy's Character and where he was going to go.

Solid movie overall. Jeff Nichols has a unique way of directing and makes this movie feel different than others and this isn't just your average drama movie this is well acted, well directed and the screenplay is great.

Also I love the biker culture and how it all came to be.

A few shoutouts to Michael Shannon and Norman Reedus for doing a great job as well .

All style.. no substance. 👎🏻

Someone should have told Butler this wasn't a high budget aftershave commercial, we're doing a movie here. Surely the characters smouldering & mysterious outlook on life will be explained.. nope. Just a biker who likes bikes.

Jimmy (Tom Hardy) seemed like he was going to steal the show.. but his character wasn't explored either.. he saw Brando be a biker..so became a biker. Zzz

No real plot, no twist & at the end Benny stops being a biker to drink beer in the garden with no explanation why & is apparently settled down with his wife now who he ignored the whole film

So much potential wasted.

Abysmal

Perhaps I'm the wrong audience but I got absolutely nothing from this film, but perhaps that's because there was nothing to gain. No history, no substance, no plot. It was just an agonising string of tedious dialogue. This film is a bit like meeting your friends at a pub or bar, only turning up 4 hours late after they've all had a skinful then sitting there stone cold sober while they talk drivel at you. I left after one hour because I couldn't waste any more of my life on it.

I suppose one positive is that whether you are a motorcycle enthusiast or not the film is equally dreadful so it doesn't discriminate.

Tom Hardy is an entirely unconvincing gang leader. He should have stopped at Legend as he was ok in that.

Everything in this film will annoy you. The dialogue, the accents, the constant smoking of cigarettes, (by people clearly not comfortable smoking cigarettes). The list goes on. One film critic compared it to Goodfellas. Well that would be true if Goodfellas was dreadful.

You might want to sit though this as an endurance test but other than that I wouldn't waste your time.

Fantastic Movie and Period Piece

Fantastic movie! I was able to go to special preview screening today and loved every second of it!

A really immersive film into how a biker club became a biker gang. The acting was fantastic!

Once again one of best parts of Jeff Nichols as a director, he lets his actors actually ACT! These days in a movie world always relying on special effects and over the top action, Nichols focuses on acting, it's refreshing.

The period vehicles and bikes and such just made it that much more full filling

Jodie and Tom really shined in their roles. Jodie and that northern, Chicago accent, wow. And Tom's character as always so strong, I think this was one of his best acting roles to date. And then Austin, he really put off a James Dean vibe to me and I enjoyed his character. Then of course Michael Shannon was a good stand out in his parts. There were several other great surprises. Damon Herriman was fantastic, as were some others I had not seen before (or at least remembered if I had) and some familiar faces in Norman Reedus (bet he loved being a part of this movie, with his love of motorcycles) and Boyd Holbrook to mention a few.

I DEFINITELY recommend this movie and it's amazing cast and director! I will be there in December on opening night for sure to see it again, and invite friends!

Confused and Frustrated

I expected this movie to respect motorcycle gangs, but it left me bored and frustrated by the end. What happened?

There was too much talking and not enough action. The story didn't move me or make a lasting impression. Jodi's accent was grating, sounding like a stereotypical Karen complaining about trivial matters. I found her tone so cringeworthy that I had to close my eyes. Ashton seemed disinterested and his character's actions-breaking the law and getting injured-felt unconvincing.

Tom Hardy, the club leader, should have been loyal and respectful to his fellow gang members. However, the way he handled disagreements left me questioning his role in the gang.

Ultimately, I couldn't form a clear opinion about this film, likely because it was stuck in mediocrity.
