I've seen worse

I knew going in that this was one of those films that I couldn't compare to a mainstream film. I read all the critic reviews, saw all the disdain for it. To my surprise, it was watchable, and to be fair I've seen weaker plots come out of big budget Hollywood movies. It reminded me a bit of 1998's U-turn, and I'm sure fans of lurid, under-the-radar cinema will find something to enjoy here at least.

And of course there is Joe, who you know from the beginning is a nutcase but you can't help but find him appealing. The actor is definitely a looker. Honestly I don't know whether or not his gay scene was bait or not, and I don't really care (it was kinda hot - until it wasn't).

All in all a very rough, small budget endeavor that plays it a bit safe for the crowd it was aiming for and it shows its weaknesses throughout, though I can't help but feel that with some proper mentoring, a good writing staff, more risks, tighter pacing and better editing, this might have been a solid cult film. As it is though, it's inevitably going to be lost in the wide sea of better produced genre efforts. I admire the attempt though and hopefully it was a valuable learning experience for ?first time?director ms Roderick. I've seen a lot of first worse first attempts, if indeed it was.

A generally fine if just somewhat flawed feature

Following her father's death, a woman and her son travel to their family's vineyard to take ownership of the property against the wishes of the workers who stay there, but as they stay to make amends grow alarmed at a series of mysterious disappearances around the property tied to a horrifying truth.

This was a pretty solid and likable genre effort. The main feature here that comes off well enough is the main setup involving the family dynamic at play once they all arrive at the vineyard and how it all plays out. The initial backstory about her disinterest in the property with how her father treated her and how it affects her son when they arrive and make friends with the two still taking care of the property all makes for a great touch with how the day-to-day operations on the place go about. How the attempts at getting them into the way of working on this type of property they run while secretly making the serial killer antics feel like their hidden in plain sight due to the way they all seem perfectly natural in the idea of a vineyard such as this. The few scenes of his psychotic antics come off well enough and provide the brutality necessary to give this a solid punch at the right moment. Outside of this, though, there's not a whole lot going on here. The psycho tendencies might be hinted at throughout the early stages of the film but they're not present in any great degree until the last act leaving much of the film to function about the goings-on at the vineyard and the struggle to ensure it stays running. Operating in this manner where the farmhand and the older woman are there on the property teaching the mother and son about life on the winery and how it all works that it comes off without much in the way of a genre feel for most of the running time. It's way too late in the film to pile on the genre material that this one utilizes which goes on so long it does start to wear waiting for the final strike to get going where it gets questioned repeating things that aren't interesting in the slightest, which is the kind of issue here that brings this one down the most overall.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, intense themes of incest, and sexual content.

Surprised

First of all this is certainly not the genre of film that catches my attention. Was never much for horror films. Never on my hit parade. I figured let me give it a shot since I have always been a fan of Brande Roderick. Never knew she was into producing and directing. Well I was pleasantly surprised. Brande and Richard put together a fun watch. The movie went at a nice pace and the characters were well chosen. I guess the Wineville Chicken Coop murders were a true story. I am looking forward to seeing more from the two of them. Don't see a Wineville 2 but I am sure Brande will come up with something else.

Review for Wineville

This is a film that I got the chance to see thanks to Erika from Gold Dust PR. Coming into this one, I did have a press release which I used to confirm that this was a 2024 horror release. It also seemed like this could be a slasher film, which isn't always my favorite subgenre. Other than that, I came into this one blind.

Synopsis: a woman who fled her abusive father's vineyard as a teenager returns after his death. She uncovers her family's dark secrets, which have festered, leading to violence and death, as she settles the estate.

We start this in the car of Missy (Christie Nicole Chaplin). It subtly alerts us that we're in the 1970s with news on the radio. She sees a guy in a truck pulled over so she sees if he needs help. He is Joe (Casey King). She offers him a ride and he accepts. It then shifts over to them making out. She inquires if there is a more private place to go. We then see her wake up, strapped to a harness and someone stabs her in the stomach with shears.

This then shifts us over to our lead, Tess (Brande Roderick), with her son, Walter (Keaton Roderick Cadrez). They're on their way to the vineyard from the synopsis. Tess didn't tell her son about her family. The story she told him growing up was that they were all dead. Walter is annoyed with her and having to come all this way. Tess is unsure of what to do either, so that makes it difficult. There are bad memories here.

I'll then introduce her aunt, Margaret (Carolyn Hennesy). She helped her brother run this farm. Joe is a guy that they helped raise when he showed up one day as a boy. These two plead with Tess, in so many words, about not selling the farm. This is their lively hood. Tess hasn't made up her mind yet and has a few days to do so.

The disappearance of Missy leads the local sheriff to the farm, John Hicks (Texas Battle). He asks if Margaret or Joe saw her, which they claim they haven't. John is shocked to see Tess, until he remembers her father's passing. They were friends in junior high. There does seem to be attraction here as well.

Old memories are drudged up here and we learn more about the dark truth hidden within this farm. Tess has a difficult position, as she doesn't want to reveal things to her son who is enjoying their time here. Joe seems like a nice enough guy, but we see he has a temper. There is a history of missing persons as well, which continues to grow.

That is where I'll leave my recap and introduction to our characters. Where I'll start is that this has a decent enough concept. This is set in the past to not have to deal with cell phones. I'm not sure the flashbacks work well enough for the time that it is set, but it also doesn't do anything that ruins the façade either. This does feel like it is inspired by things like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre or similar films where we have this isolated farm where people are going missing and it is being noticed. It is an easy recipe to follow, just not necessarily original.

Now that I have that set up, let's delve more into our lead. This tries to be a character study of her. Tess is a single mother who has a history of abuse at the hands of her father. We also learn that her mother killed herself because of it and Tess fled. Again, not a new concept, but it works fine for a movie like this. I figured out a reveal well before it was given. It is in line with what I've said here. That was something else that didn't shock me to learn. My only issue there would just be that I wasn't sure of ages. What I'll say here is that Roderick, who also directed this, did well at conveying this story and the pain that her character has. She's fine in the lead role.

I've already said that I like the isolated setting and the time they put this story since that prevents technology. It is also scarier when someone is being attacked since you know no one is coming to help. This does go brutal there and when we get practical effects those are good. I'll even say here that the cinematography and framing help to set this all up. Another thing with the isolated location, it makes sense that the abuse happening would go unchecked. Part of that again is the period. My issue here though is that it feels like the different ones used were just there for shock value. If it is happening to one of the characters, it doesn't shock me to learn that it is a history of abuse as well

That should be enough for the story, let me finish out the filmmaking aspects. How this was shot and the practical effects were good. If I have an issue, it comes with the CGI. It doesn't hold up and that took me out of the believability. I understand that is budgetary so I won't hold it against this too much. Other than that, the soundtrack and design was solid. They used music that felt of the era. I also like that characters hear screaming and voices as well, which builds tension.

All that is left then is acting. I've already said that our lead, Roderick, was fine. Battle works as this sheriff who is doing his job but has limited evidence to go on. I thought that him and Tess with their interactions were cute. Hennesy works as this older woman who must toe a fine line of hating her niece, but also needing her help to keep the farm. King works as this guy who was homeschooled and now is awkward with human interactions. I also like how sexual urges make him uncomfortable. That makes sense as this goes on. Taylor Murphy-Sinclair, Chris Schellenger and Chaplin were fine in their minor roles. Cadrez and the rest of the cast are also fine for what was needed.

In conclusion, I thought that this was a solid modern slasher. It is set in the past, to help alleviate the use of technology, which is fine. It doesn't necessarily look like the past outside of outfit choices and vehicles. What I'll credit there is using this isolated farm since that gives it a timeless feel. The characters are fine and I'd say that their acting performances work. This is made well enough with the cinematography and framing to help hide the seams. My only issue there is the use of CGI doesn't hold up. It also feels like they include taboo concepts for the shock value. Not a great film, but I did enjoy my time here.

My Rating: 6 out of 10.

A Terrifying Good Time

"Wineville," the 2024 horror offering directed by Brande Roderick and penned by Richard Schenkman, delivers a genuinely unsettling experience that lingers long after the credits roll. Described as dark, psychological, and eerie, the film lives up to these promises, crafting an atmosphere of dread that slowly suffocates the viewer.

Brande Roderick, who also stars, demonstrates a keen understanding of the genre, guiding the narrative through a labyrinth of unsettling revelations. The screenplay by Richard Schenkman is a slow burn, meticulously building tension without relying on cheap jump scares. Instead, it delves into the psychological torment of its characters, making their descent into fear palpable.

The performances are a significant strength. Carolyn Hennesy delivers a captivating turn, anchoring the film with her nuanced portrayal. Texas Battle provides a solid presence, contributing to the ensemble's dynamic. Brande Roderick, in her dual role, showcases both her directorial vision and acting prowess, creating a cohesive and disturbing world.

"Wineville" excels in its ability to create a pervasive sense of eeriness. The film's dark aesthetic and sound design work in tandem to amplify the psychological unease, making the audience question what is real and what is a product of the characters' unraveling minds. It's a film that prioritizes mood and character over explicit gore, proving that true horror often lies in the unseen and the unknown. For fans of atmospheric and thought-provoking horror, "Wineville" is a chilling and effective watch.

Sinister Horror

Most horror films take a while to get going but this film hits the gore immediately. A true story of the Wineville chicken coop murders, sees Tess Lott (Brande Roderick) revisit her family home as she has inherited it due to her relative passing.

Its been years since she visited because of a tormented past thanks to her weird incestuous family, she reluctantly revisits with her boy to finalise paperwork.

She's greeted by a familiar face who she'd rather not associate with but has no option but to.

During her stay those visiting or passing disappear in gory fashion and are searched for by the local sherrif who takes a shine to the her.

Needless to say when people start going missing its her and her boys turn to run for their lives... do they make it out alive?

Excellent performances from all the cast that make this flick very watchable.

Turn off the lights, close the curtains and grab some scary movie popcorn and enjoy!

Scary

Wineville (2024), directed by Brande Roderick in her feature directorial debut, is a 1970s-set horror-thriller that blends familial trauma with supernatural suspense. The film follows Tess Lott (played by Roderick), who returns to her family's vineyard after her father's death, only to uncover dark secrets that have festered over the decades .I thought I was a good movie and really scary. I've always wondered about those murders back in the day and this movie does a great job at showing you the timeline and breaking down everything. I think it offers a compelling watch it may not be a conventional horror film kinda lacks traditional horror scares Brande Roderick did a fantastic job at directing this one she really did a good job at capturing the supernatural suspense looking forward to Branden's future projects.

Killer Directorial Debut

Brande Roderick's directorial debut proves that a passion project can excel. A woman returns to the murderous vineyard her abusive father disguised to close out its sale after his passing. Ed Gein meets Norman Bates with a sprinkle of the Firefly family makes for a bloody good time. Brande is a wonderful person and her genuine nature that is shown when meeting fans comes through in this film as you can tell she took great care in its design and execution. You don't need a big studio in your back pocket to show that you have what it takes in the horror genre. Brande has it and this is only the start.

Give it a watch!

I generally don't do these types of movies....usually too scary for me. BUT I gave it a chance because of Brande, and we wanted to see how she did in the directors chair. And it did not disappoint!

Wineville is a true crime drama. It combined suspense and emotional depth. No spoiler, but it is set in a small town plagued by fear,. The cinematography was great, and the score is captivatingly haunting.

The lead performance is exceptionally amazing, and the supporting cast added richness to the narrative. There is intense drama mixed with profound themes of morality and redemption. There are twists and turns along the way.

Overall, "Wineville" is a captivating and entertaining film that lingers in the mind. I'd watch it again!

Best I've seen in awhile

I just got done watching Wineville. To be honest I was not expecting much, but was very surprised that it had me from the beginning. It actually had a story to it and was not just a bunch of kids going camping and getting slashed up. I liked the characters. The kid did a great job, the fear on his face was genuinely believable. Oh and my favorite person was good old Auntie. There was just enough blood and gore to get the point across. And I love that they threw in a couple of crazy things to keep you off track until the final secret finally comes out. All n all I really did like this one and would definitely recommend it to all.

Brande Roderick excel as the star and producer in her directorial debut

Let's start by saying , i didn't know what to expect, perhaps just another thriller horror movie but as I am watching it , i am getting deep into the story and starting to understand what's going on in the plot . As I am watching each characters embodied, my expectations took a turn... Let me explain.

WineVille is by far a terrific suspense thriller/horror film . The director Brande Roderick as well as writer Richard schenkman created an horror but not like another that we generally see so much in this era.

This film gives a huge hommage of the psychological 70's era style . Wineville is packed of epic horror moments such as tortures scenes that takes place in a farm which that reminded me old school style such as Texas chainsaw massacre and these iconic slashers movies that became Halloween Cult.

As a lots of dark secrets gets revealed, the tension builds up very quickly throughout the storyline as painful memories comes back to surface which balances well with so much suspense , mystery , violence, and horror .

Roderick's character Tess Lott excels and shines beautifully the way she brings her character to life. She's a single mother who returns with her son Walter Lott ( Keaton Roderick ) to her family farm vineyard after her father passed away and that's where it all begins!

Another character caught my eye which I thought did extremely well was the Sheriff John Hicks played by Texas Battle. He delivers outstanding performances and definitely bring so much importance to the storyline. The chemistry between Texas and Brande is makes it so interesting, mysterious and intriguing. I don't like to spoil it so I'll leave it that. You're just gonna have to watch the movie to find out.

Overall, the ensemble cast to name a few: Carolyn Hennesy ( Aunt Margaret ) Casey King ( Joe Lott) Emily Chapman ( Anne Lott) Will Roberts ( Edmund Lott) Chris Schellenger ( Roger) ,..did a fantastic job!

I'll conclude by saying , Wineville it's captivating, entertaining, suspenseful.

This is definitely worth a watch! It wasn't made or promoted as a blockbuster movie so don't go in looking for that. It's a good story line with good acting! It features none other than Brande Roderick who you may remember from Baywatch (no not the one with The Rock) I mean the real OG Baywatch. Go check it out and have open mind!

Well worth a watch !

Brande Roderick does an outstanding job in this horror movie as an actor and director. I especially liked the way she developed the bond with her son early on which helps set the tone for what's coming. It contains enough twists and turns to keep you thinking about " what happens next" While watching this I could actually see something like this happening in real life especially being a struggling vineyard in a small town. Her adaptation of the actual event is compelling. She steals the show with her ability to act like a mom and yet turn on the charm. You will enjoy Aunt Margaret as she is a unique character but a force to deal with. I will not go into any other details of the movie other to say if you have a Friday night and you are struggling to find something to watch, pick this one !!

Review

This movie is very gory. Brande Roderick does a great job as Tess.

The psychological and physical torture of the main villain by his mother is something to behold.

I would recommend this movie if you were a horror movie buff. This film is not for the faint of heart. There are several scenes that have a lot of gore. The amount of splattering gore was stunning to me. I was not expecting that. If you like horror I would give this movie a look.

An enjoyable movie and an impressive directorial debut

Brande Roderick is a breathtakingly beautiful and accomplished actress who has now become a director. Her first movie, Wineville, is of the horror genre but is not the typical horror film, whose plot consists of good-looking young people being menaced by a deranged killer. Wineville features an original plot that deviates from the norm, and is loosely based on a horrific real-life incident, the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders, which has provided material for the plots of several films and television shows.

Brande Roderick plays Tess Lott, a beautiful single mother on her way to claim her inheritance, the winery in the California desert where she grew up. She harbors dark memories of the place and is haunted by flashbacks of being sexually abused by her father. Anyway, she arrives at the winery with her young son, prepared to take possession of it.

The winery is ostensibly run by a mother and son, who, unbeknownst to her, are a murderous duo. The son, who performs the manual labor at the vineyard, is a handsome and virile specimen of masculinity, and employs his charisma to charm his victims, who are usually attractive young women.

Wineville also broaches topics that were controversial during the Seventies, such as interracial relationships and homosexuality. Brande Roderick's character has a nascent romance with an African American sheriff's deputy and one of the victims of the murderous vineyard worker is a gay teenager.

Anyway, the plot of the movie culminates in a denouement with a bizarre twist. The movie features some gore, but not an excessive amount, and doesn't rely on it to define the plot. Brande Roderick looks beautiful in Seventies apparel and has done a very good job with her directorial debut, which happens to fall into her favorite movie genre, horror. Why are so many beautiful women fascinated by horror movies? I don't know, but I sure am glad Brande Roderick is one of them.
