Fernanda Pivano, Teto, and Ottavio Rosati in Generazioni d'amore: Le quattro Americhe di Fernanda Pivano (2001)
The docufilm is based on a long interview with Fernanda Pivano (1917-2009), the writer who introduced Italy to four generations of American writers, from Lee Masters to Scott Fitzgerald, from Kerouac to Easton Ellis. Friends, singers and artists (from Bernardo Bertolucci to Luciano Benetton) read pages from a Pivano's book of portraits "I miei quadrifogli" (My Quatrefoils). Ottavio Rosati, directing small role- playings, tries to underline the contradiction between the Victorian education of Fernanda Pivano and her love for counterculture and transgressive literature. The making of the film caused conflicts and discussions, giving rise to a problematic post-production with different cuts of the movie.

    • Trivia
During the production of Genamore, Rome hosted the Jubilee: yet Rosati and Mario Amura entered the St. Peter Basilica without permission and only after having shot the scenes in which the Pivano invokes peace before the altar of Borromini, the troupe went out.
    • Errores
To have maximum spontaneity, Rosati shot some parts of the interview without the Pivano realizing it. Rosati also kept the moment when a phone call interrupts a dialogue and Pivano exclaims: "O Kazzo!"

The radio journalist: How did you meet Ottavio Rosati?

La mitica Nanda: Ottavio Rosati was introduced to me in 1973 for an interview, by the publisher who remained the most dear of my long series: I refer to Raimondo Biffi, publisher of the Arcana who commissioned me two books left in my heart: "C'era una volta un beat" and" Beat hippie yippie."

      The radio journalist: Why?

La mitica Nanda: Biffi told me: 'This boy has made Ezra Pound talk in Spoleto!"

The radio journalist: How old was he?

La mitica Nanda: He was very young then, clearly much more mature than his age: 23 years old. He impressed me with his unusual genius and intrigued me with his knowledge of psychoanalysis. In practice, Rosati taught me the very little I know about psychoanalysis, naturally as a friend...

The radio journalist: From a psychoanalytic play between you and Rosati that leads you to rummage in your childhood and in your incredible and extraordinary memories, a beautiful and moving cinematographic portrait was born...

La mitica Nanda: I'm not surprised. Our long friendship allowed him to get to know me well, also because, since I met him, I know how passionately he carries out his activity as a director. Both with his psychodramas, both in the popularization of psychoanalysis. And in the purely creative field.

The radio journalist: In Rome, you and Ottavio live in the same house: the Trastevere old palace of your novel "La mia Kasbah"...

La mitica Nanda: We live in the same old palace. But in two different houses. Rosati has opened a passage on the terrace. But they are two different flats.

The radio journalist: What amuses you and what makes you angry about Ottavio?

La mitica Nanda: I really enjoy his humor, which is often irresistible. What makes me angry is not about anyone.

    • Créditos curiosos
The photographs of Fernanda Pivano as a child and girl are part of a family album that Mary Pivano, mother of the writer, gave to Rosati in Liguria in 1979 recommending to always protect her daughter. Ottavio was 29 years old.
    • Versiones alternativas
Originally premiered at the Torino Film Festival 2001 with the title "Generazioni d'amore" in a short cut by Anna Lisa Forgione (running 60 minutes). Later cut to 72 minutes. In December 2007, the company Plays srl bought 100% of all dominical rights for the exploitation of "Generazioni d'amore" from the first producer Grazia Volpi. The new documentary (to be published as DVD) with the sub-title "Il Teatro del Tempo di Fernanda Pivano" (2020) has been edited by the director and by the editor Fabrizio Campioni (Istituto Luce Cinecittà) in 2020, starting from the original Betacam. The DVD contains new extra contents by Ottavio Rosati filmed in 2020.
