Each of the three protagonists represents what Rockstar saw as the three types of Grand Theft Auto players.
- Michael Townley/De-Santa represents the kind of player who has beaten the game and is "retired" from a life of crime.
- Franklin Clinton represents the traditional protagonist of a Grand Theft Auto game who is ambitious and eager to become a successful criminal.
- Trevor Philips represents the player who takes advantage of the game's freedom to cause chaos and mayhem.
Not far east of the coast of Sandy Shore, if you dive very far down (500 ft), you will see a hatch, and a light inside the light flickers on. If you get close enough, a series of noises can be heard. The noises are in fact morse code, and it translates to "Hey, you never call, how d' you fancy going bowling." This is a reference to the Grand Theft Auto IV (2008) character Roman Bellic , Niko Bellic's cousin, who constantly rings him throughout the game, asking to go bowling.
