Tigmanshu Dhulia wanted to start the film in 2006 with Irrfan Khan and Randeep Hooda. He wanted the title Tevar but the rights were with Yashraj Films. Actor Manik Bedi was to produce the film.
Mahie Gill was appreciated for her role.
Film was a surprise hit and went on to make sequels like Saheb Biwi Aure Gangster Returns 2013 and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3: 2018.
Former Times of India journalist & branding specialist filmmaker Rahul Mittra zeroed down on Devgarh Baria, in Gujarat and shot the the entire film within a radius of 10 kms, finishing the film in 28 days, Rahul Mittra stuck a deal with the royal family of Devgarh Baria and took over the old palace/haveli and staff quarters around it to shoot the film and even made actors & crew stay there only. The old palace was known to be haunted and few of the lead actors including Jimmy Sheirgill, Randeep Hooda, Mahie Gill & crew members did experience some unusual activity during the shoot. But the shoot finished peacefully in record time and the film was released to packed houses making it a blockbuster, opening many doors for producer Rahul Mittra and everyone involved in the project. Soon after Rahul Mittra began Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns with Irrfan Khan as the gangster, making it the quickest sequel to go on the floors in the history of Indian cinema.
