Wanted so badly for this to be good.

The animation and visuals are stellar. And I will forgive A LOT when I finally find a show with sharp animation.

I don't know if I will go as far as saying the show's story is a mess. It does, however, seem only to exist to create cool visuals. There is some pretense at an overall plot and given AoT I though there might be a bigger mystery revealed but so far it seems that the pretense is as far as it goes.

I think it might have worked for previous generations. It's technically serial but the badguy of the week without much else feels highly like the episodic stuff most of society has shifted away from. Not great for an overall story.

The characters are also highly annoying over and above thy typical constant drama and dysfunctional emotional regulation that is such a ubiquitous part of anime that I have to overlook it or I would have very little anime to watch. However, along with this is the animation shifts that feel totally out of place in a show that looks this solid in animation and takes itself so seriously. It would be like Castlevania doing Chibi.

But what really kills this is the exposition. I tried to shift over to the sub but it isn't any better. It's so bad it feels more like they are breaking the fourth wall to talk to us instead of each other. Like it's forcing you to have it on in the background, half-ignored. If you sit down and give it your full attention it is intolerable.

It's really unfortunate that a show that looks this great doesn't have anything else going for it but I guess thats the way it is.

Phenomenal animation hampered by aggressively average writing.

Title says it all really.

WITStudio truly did some outstanding work in the production from animation to music. The setting is fascinating. The action sets are intense and well choreographed. The animation is vibrant, colorful, and impactful. The musical score accentuates both those things... But the story and the writing are painful average with a major issue in pacing.

I'm sure you'll see other reviews eating this a 10/10 and denying "the hate" but it's copium. As harsh as this may sound, to all those who rated this 10, all I can respond with is "Baby's first sci-fi?"

You'll see those reviews say it explores themes of grief and loyalty... If by "explore" they mean "present" then sure... but let's be clear Moonrise does not explore any theme that deeply especially not enough to warrant discussion.

The plot of Moonrise follows Jacob 'Jack' Shadow and friends survive an initial devastating attack framed as an assault from Moon Colony. Jack is framed as part of the terrorist group, Moon Chain, that is apparently responsible for the attack. As the show progresses you'll learn about Jack's past and a deeper connection he has that revolves around an unfolding conspiracy involving the war between Earth and the Moon.

Sounds fascinating right? It certainly starts off strong and grips you but half way through the season it completely loses its steam with pacing issues and questionable writing decisions. The show will continually add more pieces to the mystery but in a disjointed and disfuncional manner, often leaving you wondering what the point was. A saving grace is that by the very end, it does tie up MOST loose ends. Ultimately, if it weren't for the stellar production I and most others wouldn't even have finished the show.

Most characters are forgettable.

The main character is memorable for the wrong reasons, I wanted to like Jack Shadow so much but by the end of it, he was one of my least favorite characters in a roster of boring 1 note characters.

Rhys, another main protagonist and 'love interest' also falls into this as well. Special shout-out to Commander Salamandra for being a badass.

The ending is in my opinion downright bad and I mean face palm bad. It really takes away from the whole experience. It undercuts the rebels themes and message as a whole. What was a soft 7 quickly dropped to 6. I would even say 5 but no matter how many complains I issue against the writing and the story, it's still a visual treat. Id recommend watching it in passing. Something to hold you over while you wait for your other shows to return or as mindless fun.

What is going on?

The pacing and the way this story is produced is nothing short of frustrating.

Half the time you don't know what is going on or how you are supposed to feel.

This isn't a story unfolds type situation more a jumping back and forth with terrible plot connection. I'm all for a show that initially shows you a peak into what the future has to offer but for this it makes absolutely no sense and adds nothing to the story.

Even the weaponry & the characters talents & why they have been picked for the mission has massive holes in it.

The only reason I have it a 6 is the animation is fantastic & I feel for a team who put the heart & soul into this only for the sitting & story to let them down so very very badly.

A bit disappointed

I just finished watching moon rise and I am disappointed it took them 7 years to make This in terms of animation the show is brilliant but there is no story I think for the last 7 years they have been just animating the show and have forgotten that there is something called story, plot, setting.

And don't get me started on the characters they are just frustrated overall I am just disappointed if you are looking for something good to watch something which can please your eyes go for it but there is no story and the show feels quit rushed even with 18 episodes still the animation is one of the best I have ever seen .

Moonrise Left Me Speechless (and a Little Emotional)

Just finished watching Moonrise on Netflix and wow... I'm honestly blown away. The animation is absolutely stunning! You can really tell it's WIT Studio behind it. The space scenes, the lunar landscapes, the little emotional expressions on the characters' faces! Everything is so beautifully done.

The story hits hard too. It's not just flashy sci-fi (although there's plenty of that), it's got a real emotional core. I wasn't expecting to get as attached as I did to Jack and the others. There's something really powerful about the way it explores grief, loyalty, and what it means to fight for something bigger than yourself.

Also, the music? Incredible. That theme song by AiNA THE END gave me chills. It just ties everything together so perfectly.

If you're into anime that actually makes you feel something, not just eye candy, this one's worth your time. 10/10, no question.

Decent

Great animation and overall it's a pretty decent anime with some cool characters and epic fight scenes, however that is all that's going for it. The story is mediocre and leaves many things unexplained. The plot doesn't really make any sense and the worldbuilding and pacing is dissapointing. The soundtrack is good but not very memorable, and the action overall in the anime ends quickly. Many characters are not explored enough and feel that they are only there just to be there.

Overall, its a decent anime if you want to watch a short season with cool fight scenes and great animation, but dissapointing considering the production that went into this anime.

Excellent animation can't save a poor script and terrible editing. The animated disappointment of the year.

With several months left until the end of the year, I'm not afraid to say that this is the animated product that has disappointed me the most, without a doubt.

Netflix's promotion was disastrous from every perspective, but I still didn't expect what I found in "Moonrise." A priori, it had everything to be a success. Wit Studio (which, needless to say, hasn't gotten it right since "Attack on Titan," with the exception of "Spy x Family") guaranteed excellent animation.

If you looked at the directors and people involved, you could see titles like "Full Metal Alchemist," for example.

However, none of this was reflected in this product. The 18 episodes released in one go, as is Netflix's trademark, coupled with the scant promotion, was a difficult combination to swallow. But if you add a poor script and even worse editing, you knew this was destined for failure.

We have inexplicable time jumps throughout the series. Furthermore, we have a group of main characters with confusing developments, strange motivations, and even more difficult-to-understand connections. More characters are added as the episodes go by, and we don't know who they are, forgettable like the rest.

But we also have an important secondary character who dies in episode 3 and has little or no relevance to the others, to the point that we didn't see anything on camera; he's completely inconsequential. A main character doesn't die until the last episode, and it's completely anticlimactic. The deaths in this war are never felt, and that, in my opinion, is a huge failure.

If you look at the pace of the first seven episodes and then compare it with the rest of the series, you'll realize something's strange; the difference in quality is noticeable! If we analyze IMDB, we realize that there are people who participate in this series right up to episode 7. Is that a coincidence? I don't think so!

They sweeten the deal with incredible animation, especially in the fights and dynamic sequences, but we don't get a single explanation as to why things happen. What are the SEEDs? Who is SEED 3? What is the L-Zone? Why can it terraform? Nothing makes any sense in this series.

I could go on about all the vices found in 18 episodes, but that's not the point.

Unfortunately, this series, which was highly anticipated and had everything to succeed, ends up being the worst animated product of the year, by far. No animation can save a bad story...

Moonrise (Season 1, 2025, 7.6/10)

Moonrise (Season 1, 2025, 7.6/10) - a visually powerful but narratively underdeveloped space opera from Wit Studio that impresses more with its style than its substance. The project promised to be one of the year's major sci-fi releases, but ultimately landed as solid, yet not outstanding.

The main character is Jack, a soldier sent to the Moon to suppress an uprising and confront his own past. The story unfolds against the backdrop of a conflict between Earth and the lunar colony, touching on themes of inequality, manipulation, and personal trauma. However, despite these compelling ideas, the storytelling remains fairly straightforward. Some plot twists work, but much of the narrative feels schematic, and the supporting characters lack depth - there's not enough nuance to fully engage.

What saves the show is the visual presentation. Wit Studio once again proves its mastery: space battles, lunar landscapes, and surface combat scenes are all crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Character designs by Hiromu Arakawa are distinctive and organic. The animation is powerful, especially during action sequences where the series kicks into high gear. The sound design also holds up well: the soundtrack enhances the atmosphere, and the sound effects add depth to both silent and action-filled scenes.

There's a sense that the series aimed for something greater - a bit philosophical, a bit tragic, a bit dystopian - but ultimately stopped halfway. It doesn't fail, but it doesn't fully realize the potential of its themes either. The finale leaves room for a continuation, but for now, it's a good project - not a great one.

Verdict: Moonrise is a beautiful shell filled with ideas that weren't given enough time to truly resonate. It's worth watching for the visuals, atmosphere, and some standout moments. But if you're expecting deep sci-fi storytelling and precise drama, be prepared to fill in some of the emotional gaps yourself.

Could've been the best of 2025

There are so many jumps!!! Confusing all around; nothing tells you that a year has gone by or how the characters got to be where they are. We get some visions of the past but leave you on a cliffhanger with no explanation. Barely/Briefly explains what is going on, so if you miss it you're confused trying to go back and understand. Whole thing felt so rushed. They don't talk about the SEED enough so you only really get a glimpse of why.

I really wanted to like this anime because it's a sci-fi, action show, but too many holes for me and too rushed. Definitely could've been a 10/10 anime, just needed more back story.

The Moon is a Bland Mistress

I binged all of Moonrise on release and it went from ok, I guess, to the second half being borderline white noise. It all boiled down to the rule of cool and the magic of friendship. Tow Ubukata originally wrote the now-releasing hard sci-fi books before the director asked to rewrite them into Science Fantasy Shounen Action slob to make it "more marketable." OVA quality action can´t matter if the plot doesn´t matter and the characters wear plot armor. Especially if endless robots and masked Stormtroopers are the enemy. Or techno slime. The hell. Who knows who is to be blamed but Ubukata´s shows are rarely this bland. Bye Bye, Earth ain´t good but it´s never boring. The time jumping is the single worst idea, besides the Moon Blobs or the Mother Brain AI uprising or the love triangle that goes nowhere or the fake politics or the lack of a developed cast. Democracy > AI or monarchy and who needs a proper ending if the plot never gets going to begin with? War bad, friendship gud. Wow, so deep and this is the studio's 2nd AoT wannabe after the even worse Iron Fortress. Let it go, Wit. Whatever/10, so a 5.

I can´t see anyone talking about this by next month. 7 years in the making. 7 years! Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune (6/10) and Make My Day (7/10) are both better and shorter. Who remembers them though? Both only 2023 releases. Netflix is where sci-fi goes to die.

One of the best of 2025

Moonrise is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant sci-fi anime that explores themes of war, humanity, and redemption against the backdrop of a colonized Moon. Directed by Masashi Koizuka and produced by WIT Studio, the story follows Jack and Al, two soldiers fighting in a brutal lunar conflict. The series excels in its world-building, portraying a gritty, militarized Moon with a haunting beauty. The animation is top-notch, blending traditional and CGI elements to deliver breathtaking action scenes and atmospheric landscapes. One of the best anime's of 2025 if you haven't given it a watch try it out!

Much Ado About Nothing

Story goes nowhere and it takes a long long long time to ramble around. It just seems to meander with nowhere to go. I'm now in the middle of the 6th Episode and I just want it to be better! It is so painfully average.

If you just like colorful animated graphics, and you do not need a plot, a story, or any kind of interesting narrative, fine. This is your kind of jam. But, if you are like me, and you would LOVE for the whole world to know about great anime, Frieren, Samurai Champloo, Demon Slayer, Dan Dan, Hell's Paradise, or My Hero Academia.... this Moonrise is NOT it.

Don't try to talk friends or family into watching this series if they are not really die-hard anime fans. All it will do is affirm that anime is a waste of time, adds nothing, and is only enjoyed by burnouts. Really, it is so boring and awful, cannot believe anyone at Netflix thought it should be green-lighted.

Beautiful animation wasted on terribly executed story telling

I really wanted to like this, but this was really awful. 4 stars only for the animation because those heavy hitters deserve the respect. The poor storytelling probably had more to do with Netflix producers putting their grubby hands all over this, but objectively, this is just a poor piece of work. The story telling and pace are executed terribly, oftentimes leaving the viewer feeling in a constant state of confusion. The characters also feel one dimensional since no real effort in developing them. I'm really disappointed I spent so much time on this. I can't recommend this to anyone who values their time.

A bit dissapointing and confusing

Man, it's way too hectic, shaky, confused and jumbled.

The animations, drawings, effects and story are actually great and I really, really hoped that something really good was coming.

But apart from the sometimes funny elements, the very nice, different characters and the great setting, at some point I was just annoyed by the chaotic narrative style. And by the hectic, shaky, wild, and bad fighting scenes.

Once again, someone hasn't understood how to build a narrative. And I can only recommend everyone to take a look at Arcane, Frieren or even Apothecary Diaries by comparison. A world of difference, albeit in very different settings, but that doesn't change how you should approach a story.

I'm now on episode 4 and as it hasn't got any better up to this point, I assume that it will stay that way.

If not, I will adjust my rating of 6 points up or down accordingly after the series is finished.

This series has so much potential! It's a real shame.

Glad to see more positive reviews, which I agree with

Netflix, especially sci-fi, is always hit or miss. I knew nothing about the subject matter, so I went to IMDb and saw one average review, and three or four pretty negative reviews from those familiar with the material. Not really enough to go on, so I gave it a try and I have really enjoyed the show so far. If I had started watching it during the day, I would've binged the entire show.

The plot is a little contrived and using all the time jumps makes it confusing at first. But if you hang in there, everything eventually gets explained. The animation is excellent, showing near life like detail of a futuristic moon colony, which is where most of the story is based.

The story moves along at a good pace with lots of action and interesting plot devices. I felt the English acting dub was excellent, to the point that I thought it might not be Japanese produced. However, it is and kudos to them for advancing sci-fi animation.

Wanted to love it but it falls short

I really wanted to love this anime but watching this series is confusing and not in the way where you are supposed to be confused until the end or it reveals little secrets as you go like if you was watching attack on titan for example.

The series doesnt really explain anything all the way through and you think they will explain things in the ending but you get a breif explantion which if you are not paying attention you will miss and requires some reading between the lines. The ending was very rushed packed in to the last episode at the end when it diddnt need to be.

It is a shame as the animation is very good and appealing and there are definatly some interesting charachters that could of had some really interesting back stories and would like to of got to know more about or got to know better but alas this was not the case. This is an average anime at best.

Nice visuals but terrible storyline

Considering how frustrated I am with the storyline, it is difficult to give an objective opinion regarding this show. Yes, the visuals are pretty good, however that does not negate the fact that:

1. The storyline was meaningless as the mystery was never properly explained in detailed 2. Flashbacks, flashforwards and current events are so detached (a flashforward/flashback and the follow up or current events can be detached from each other for as far as 3 episodes) 3. The characters make ludicrous decisions that make no sense 4. Overall, the ending was severely underwhelming

You just got more and more irritated as the story progresses. For those who watch a lot of good quality anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Solo Levelling, Bleach, Blue Eyed Samurai, etc., perhaps try watching something else instead.

Good art, decent story and worldbuilding.

The first thing i want to say is i like the CGI even though i hate it in most animes. As expected from Wit the animation is clean. I like the space stories even though this was not quite unique i like the power system which allowed multiple different beautiful cuts and scenes. The overall story is a bit layed out and don't go depth in most directions. The character designs are good and the artstyle fits it. The only flaw might be at least for me it was emotionless even though it tried here and there. All in all binge watched it and it was a decent story with really good animation. If you like anime and like the space concept it is a good watch.

If You Think Moonrise Is "Mid," Did We Even Watch the Same Show?!

Seriously, I have to ask - what show were the haters watching? Because the Moonrise I just finished on Netflix? Absolute sci-fi gold.

From the moment the opening scene hit, I knew this wasn't your average anime space flick. WIT Studio flexes hard with some of the cleanest, most cinematic animation I've seen in years. The lunar visuals are nothing short of breathtaking - moody, immersive, and gorgeously lit. And let's talk about the blend of CGI and traditional art - THIS is how it's done right. No uncanny valley weirdness, just pure visual elegance.

Now, to the people calling the story "boring" or "shallow"... really? Beneath the action (which is top-tier, by the way), Moonrise dives into some heavy themes - grief, loyalty, identity, and the emotional toll of war. Jack's arc alone deserves its own discussion thread. If you're skimming for explosions and skipping the emotional beats, you're missing the whole point.

And the music? Absolutely phenomenal. Every track enhances the emotion, tension, and atmosphere - it doesn't just support the story, it amplifies it.

Bottom line: Moonrise isn't just a show, it's an experience. It's what happens when storytelling, worldbuilding, music, and art come together in perfect alignment. Ignore the trolls. Watch it for yourself. Let it surprise you.

9.5/10 - and praying for a second season.

Sci-fi modular kit with emotional touch (7.5/10)

The show is emotionally driven and action-focused. Themes like AI, colonialism and control are presented but not deeply explored. That's okay - Moonrise tells a heartfelt story. But those seeking deeper philosophical insight may be disappointed.

Also, the show presents a solid but predictable "Best of Sci-Fi" tailored for an American audience: AI control, space rebellion and personal trauma. Like a mix of The Expanse, Rogue One, Psycho Pass, Oblivion, Star Wars, and even Lost in Space.

The plot is simple and full of convenient coincidences: Jack's friends end up in the same squad and missions find exactly who they need. At the same time you need to pay attention for the numerous time jumps. It doesn't disturb me much.

The visual contrast works: the coldness of space meets the warmth of human emotion. For me, this is a cool combination of CGI and the dand-drawn style of Hiromu Arakawa. A great solution for a sci-fi anime.

What stands out is how emotions move the plot. In a genre that often feels cold, Moonrise stays human. I like watching how relationships shift and motivations evolve. Sometimes, it's as important as the main plot.

Unfortunately, the worldbuilding only focuses on rebellion and relationships, leaving politics and moon society vague. It's acceptable. Maybe, more details might have revealed inconsistencies.

The living moon creature is THE strange thing in the series. It lacks clear purpose. Unlike creatures in Suzume or Princess Mononoke, this one has no defined symbolism. Is it a weapon? A counterforce to the AI? A visual nod to The Expanse? It has presence - but no meaning. Too bad

Finally, i want to say something about the sound track. It's definitely great but it feels a bit out of fashion. There is clearly an inspiration from the rich and adventurous music from John Williams (remember Lost in Space?). But thinking about the loneliness on the open moon surface leaves me in doubt.

Limited beyond Eye Candy

The show is gorgeous. The visuals are unique yet inspired by many of the most popular series of the last years. The action is cool and the tie in of the story to those moments allows them to carry weight.

Beyond that though, the story as a whole is atrocious and falls over itself incredibly hard.

The largest issue is the unspoken time clips that happen mid-scene. When paired with time skips that go in both directions as a viewer you're left to constantly think "wait what happened in the scene we were just watching" as you time travel years in the future. You don't get answers until several episodes later to which you've forgotten you were left on a mid-episode cliffhanger.

This show has the makings of something incredible, but the story butchered it. Unless you feel like digging deep into the lore and not peeling your eyes away from the show while it plays, then you'll enjoy it. If you can't fully focus, this probably isn't the show for you.

Fantastic!

This here is one of the best new sci-fi anime. I've been impressed with the trailers before it's launch and I'm even more impressed now that I've finished watching all the episodes.

We rarely get pure sci-fi anime, it's usually mostly fantasy. This alone is exciting. The animation is clean, sharp, detailed and second to none. The visuals are breathtaking and the cast of characters is enjoyable to follow and share moments with.

Characters are well developed and look very detailed. The environments are also captivating and well designed. The orchestral soundtrack fits the scenario and gives an uplifting and dreamlike tone to it all. As for the story, it's actually quite complex, but it's a bit confusing and it gets complicated unless you are willing to give it time and follow it closely.

It's a slow burner. It's meant to be savoured bit by bit, you need to stop and reflect on what you see, hear and feel. Moonrise is not meant to be binged, you need to give it time to grow and watch a few episodes per day. If you watch it all in a flash, you'll be left disappointed. All characters have their own story and background. And to a degree, they all evolve and change with time.

They have their own motivations, ambitions and goals. Just take your time with this one. It's a fantastic journey and a solid sci-fi show!

Visually stunning but emotionally rushed

Moonrise is a visually appealing and entertaining series, with a unique art style and some striking animation sequences. It's fun to watch and has a lot of promise, but unfortunately, the pacing is far too fast for the story it's trying to tell. As a result, the characters come across as two-dimensional, and the world feels underdeveloped.

There's a lot of emotional weight packed into a short runtime, but without enough time spent on character development or worldbuilding, it's hard to fully connect with the cast or invest in their journeys. A longer first season-or even a second season-could have given the narrative the breathing room it needed and elevated the show into something more impactful.

Still, it's an enjoyable ride for fans of sci-fi and anime, and there's clear potential if Netflix decides to continue the story. 7/10 - beautiful, bold, but ultimately a bit shallow.

People who hate one the show are just kids they are saying that it was boring and that the pacing is not good but in reality this is an extremely well written and every complex show the story is so deep and meaningful and it is truly a masterpiece and the world building is just amazing and it's really well balanced from the action to the story telling that's what makes it so good you don't ever get bored and at the same time it's really emotionally investing and overall this is a really good show for people who want a deep well written story truly a masterpiece hope this gets a second season...
