Mark Webber in 13 Pecados (2014)
Movie of the Week #8: Marko Stojiljković picks 13: Game of Death (2006) by Chookiat Sakveerakul
Mark Webber in 13 Pecados (2014)
In the age of the inflation of the “content” of any kind, we tend to be anesthetized and desensitized by the sheer amount of it that is available to us. We rarely ask ourselves how it is “produced” for our entertainment or whatever. The same goes for the coverage of the big events like wars, pandemics and natural disasters and for the banal ones like quiz, game and reality shows. That is how the society of the spectacle operates. So brace yourselves for “13: Game of Death” (2006) by Chookiat Sakveerakul that thematizes it.

Our protagonist Phuchit (Krissada Sukosol) is having the worst day of his life: he gets dumped by his girlfriend and fired from his work, his car is repossessed, he maxed his credit cards and he still has to provide for his mother and sister. The chance of “salvation” comes in the form of the call from the...

Fantasia 2020: ‘Hk: Forbidden Superhero’ Review
Image
Stars: Ryohei Suzuki, Fumika Shimizu, Ken Yasuda, Shôta Chiyo, Shunsuke Daitô, Narushi Ikeda, Nana Katase, Tsuyoshi Muro, Shun Oguri, Yoshinori Okada, Jirô Satô, Takashi Tsukamoto | Written by Yûichi Fukuda, Shun Oguri | Directed by Yûichi Fukuda

I love, nay Adore, completely-bonkers Far East flicks be they live-action or animation – hell, some of the first films I ever reviewed professionally (if anything I do can be called a profession) were titles like Big Man Japan and 13: Game of Death. So it’s safe to say that I’m part of the target [Western] audience for a film like Hk: Forbidden Superhero – even moreso given the ridiculous over-the-top ending that sees one of the films villains emerge in a giant mech that looks like a combination of two of my favourite kids TV shows: a Power Rangers Zord and the combiner Devastator from the original 80s Transformers cartoon.

Which is why I absolutely Loved this movie!

Interview: Daniel Stamm Talks Directing Down for Blumhouse and Hulu’s Into The Dark, Teases New Project They with Bryan Bertino
Just in time for Valentine’s Day is the next episode of Blumhouse and Hulu’s Into the Dark, Down, directed by Daniel Stamm. I recently caught up with The Last Exorcism and 13 Sins director to talk about the challenges of filming a feature-length episode that takes place almost entirely in an elevator, and he also gave me an update on They, a movie written by The Stranger’s Bryan Bertino, which he hope to be filming soon:

How did you get involved with Blumhouse and Hulu’s Into the Dark series?

Daniel Stamm: I had done a movie with Blumhouse before, called 13 Sins, and Jason Blum was an executive producer on it. Down was actually a script outside of Blumhouse and Hulu that I read from Kent Kubena, the writer, before it was even [thought of] for a Blumhouse movie. And then a couple of weeks later, he called and...

The Slender Man Emerges from the Fog in this Trailer
The urban legend of the Slender Man grows. Director Sylvain White (I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer) helms this film, from a script written by David Birke (13 Sins, 2014) and Victor Surge. The film stars: Joey King (The Conjuring, 2013), Julia Goldani Telles and Annalise Basso. In the film, an unnatural man haunts a local forest, leading to the disappearance of dozens of children and teenagers. A Mythology Entertainment and Madhouse Entertainment production, the film's first trailer is available here. In the trailer, a voice-over asks "Where is my daughter?" There is no answer. Ron Perlman Joins Mark Webber in Angry Little God
Looks like Hellboy himself has signed on to a film that puts its main character through a special kind of hell.

Deadline reports that Ron Perlman and character actors Pruitt Taylor Vince, Tom Bower and Devon Graye are the newest additions to the cast of Angry Little God, a remake of a Thai film called 13: Game of Death. Not to be confused with 13: Tzameti, which was remade recently, this one has an equally intriguing premise.

Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Rutina Wesley (True Blood) star as a married couple who are having financial problems. When the man gets a call telling him he's on a hidden camera game show and must perform 13 tasks to make a boatload of money, he accepts the challenge without telling his wife but quickly realizes that things are about to turn bad because these tasks aren't exactly what he thought they'd be.

Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, James Le Gros, and John Philbin in Punto de quiebra (1991)
Development Titles of the Week: Remakes and Reboots Edition
Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, James Le Gros, and John Philbin in Punto de quiebra (1991)
The trend to remake, reboot or re-whatever film favorites from the past continues with our latest round-up of in-development projects that were recently added and/or updated on IMDbPro. Here are a few that caught our attention this week:

Point Break – Alcon Entertainment and Salt scribe Kurt Wimmer will update the original '90s surfer flick directed by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow to include many more extreme sports, and we can only hope for a Keanu Reeves/Gary Busey cameo.

Beetlejuice 2 – Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter writer Seth Grahame-Smith is teaming up with David Katzenberg to script a pair of projects for Warner Bros.—one of which is strongly considered to be this follow-up/reboot to Tim Burton's 1988 ghost-with-the-most comedy.

Untitled 'Le Mac' Remake – Based on the French comedy Le Mac, Hangover co-star Ed Helms headlines this comedy about a kidnapped banker who's forced to go undercover as a pimped-out gangster.

Highlander – There can be only one-- except when it comes to popular remakes. Such is the case with this fantasy favorite now that 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo signed on to direct the latest version from Summit Entertainment.

13 – The Last Exorcist director Daniel Stamm is on board to direct this remake of the Thai horror film 13: Game of Death, which centers on a guy caught up in a cruel game of challenges for cash.
