sadly unfabulous

Lou (Susan Sarandon), Marilyn (Bette Midler), Alice (Megan Mullally), and Kitty (Sheryl Lee Ralph) have been best friends since their twenties. Lou is holding a grudge against Marilyn. With Marilyn having a destination wedding, Alice and Kitty trick Lou to attend as the bridesmaids.

These are four fabulous older actresses. Almost immediately, I am wondering what is going wrong. The most obvious is Marilyn's TikTok obsession. She needs to be dumber and more flighty for that comedy to work. I would prefer something more simple and heartfelt. I can feel my heart drop every time they go back to old-people-doing-social-media jokes. This is a sad attempt at comedy.

Talent wasted on bad script and bad directing

My wife and I saw the trailer and really liked it. It reminded us both of the film Last Vegas. The basic storyline similarities are plentiful. The problem is the execution. The only positive I have is Susan Sarandon. Her character's storyline is the only thing worthy of admission and she delivered with what she was given. The other ladies were given nothing to display their brilliant comedic talents. The thought of seeing Broadway legends Bette Midler and Sheryl Lee Ralph on the big screen was gonna be epic. Too bad these writers and director were not up to ther task.

As I stated earlier, if you have seen the film Last Vegas, you could say this film looks like the female lead version. Fabulous Four has the powerhouse talent just the same as Last Vegas and even similar storyline arcs, but this film relies too heavily on cheap, immature, repetitive, bad jokes and not enough energy building a good script. Wait for streaming.

Is this what comedies are gonna look like with AI?

So..I approached this movie with an open mind, as during the past years I have watched one after the next comedy with a void script, uninteresting dialogues and seemingly 'funny' canned moments, looking desperately to find one that faintly resembles of the movies made in the 90s..by real people.

Seeing this amazing cast in a fair production, in a movie that made it to the theatres, by a writer that seems to have less experience than a film student, has me thinking that this is what a movie written by AI looks like.

I mean how do one after the next films like that, starring the creme-de-la-creme makes it to the screens?

It's a shame for the actors, as well as us, who remember them in their golden era, starring in strong-scripted quirky productions.

All these films, this one included, try to resemble the human experience but they lack the element of depth, meaning and passion; something only the human experience can recreate.

Cringeworthy

What can I say, other than everything about this movie is cringeworthy. So much wasted potential with these actresses. Bette Midler was typical Bette, making faces and shrill. Megan Mullally was a lower octave Karen from "Will and Grace" only with pot instead of booze and pills. Sheryl Lee Ralph was useless and seemed to be there only to check a diversity box. Susan Sarandon looked the entire time like she knew this movie was a mistake. The whole movie felt like a Liftetime tv movie...cheap looking, rushed, AI script, cheap jokes, terrible directing. There's not one moment where I felt like any of these characters were behaving in a realistic manner for women of their age and their place in life, completely unrealistic scenarios and actions. And I can't even begin to describe how awkward the whole Michael Bolton scene was. It seriously looked like a wax figure...he didn't move, just a blank stare into space and singing, no movement whatsoever and no interaction with anyone in the scene...extremely weird and uncomfortable. Skip this one for sure.

What a disappointment!

What a waste of good talent! The script was poorly written, directed poorly and the location looked more like a promotion of a tourist destination in a very tacky part of the USA. Product placement was oh so obvious....it was all so much in your face. We walked out of the cinema after 30 mins when the "stars" started to sing in harmony whilst flying through the air against which was so obviously a false backdrop. My friend and I were very disappointed after the trailer promised so much! I'm a big fan of Bette Midler & Susan Sarandon....this movie was beneath both of these fab actors! Could not recommend.

Not better than what other reviews say

This movie is unwatchable. I was done after 10 minutes because the acting is horrible and the plot has been done a zillion times. I would have expected so much better from these actresses. It is time for hollywood to stop making thee types of films. The kind with older actors who phone it in just for a paycheck. They probably won't though because it makes them money, I guess. It doesn't mean I have to watch this drivel. It is too bad that some of these women have over their lifetime built solid acting reputations and have been diminished to the point of putting together these kinds of films. Just don't.

Ok but... why?

There's a first time for everything. This was my first time walking out of a movie 45 minutes in. But I could feel this boring, by the numbers, unfunny slog draining my will to live so I had to go.

Megan Mullaly had a few good zingers. Everyone else was hammy and boring. Predictable old lady jokes with some stock characters for the main cast to bump up against for some reason I guess. I don't know.

Who funded this? Who wrote this? Why does this uninteresting mess exist? It didn't even have the courtesy to be so bad it's funny. It's just plain bad. But hey, get that bag girls. I don't fault the leads for wanting a check.

Seriously, was this movie funded by the Key West tourism board? Or written by them?

Below Average

Using seasoned women in a comedy seems to be a genre in itself and the genre is picking up fast. As part of this genre The Fabulous Four is lackluster to films like Book Club and 80 for Brady. It might be that Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda have this genre on lock, which is strange because Sussan Sarandon is one of the hottest senior citizens out there, so this should have worked but it did not, at least not for me.

I do ponder. While the film is exploiting stars of a certain age there is very little comedy actually coming from this. We understand they are old and the movie leaves us with that and nothing else. Unlike films like Thelma in which I get a better insight of what happens to every human on the planet when they get old and that insight increased the entertainment value.

That insight is not found here as the women take advantage of their great genetics and the fact that they need not play old to tell a story about lifelong friendship, which i could have seen anywhere and have seen everywhere so The Fabulous Four is not bringing anything to the table and it shows.

Pass altogether.

Stop writing this crap for remarkable leading ladies.

I knew from the trailer how this film was going to go down. I was not holding out much hope. I don't understand why movies with older men in it can be given decent scripts, then you get a cast that is so magical in the older leading lady department, especially Sarandon and Midler and you deliver something so poorly written it hurts my brain. These women deserve scripts of a higher caliber. Not mindless dribble, that is laughs void and storyline vacant. Was it as bad as Summer Camp? NO, but it still failed to deliver, I even cringed at certain moments. Please, Please writers, write better scripts for these stars.

An amiable frienemy romp in Key West

In case you didn't know, the titular 'Four' are Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Megan Mullally.

To be sure, this film won't be the career highlight of any of these esteemed actresses. Nevertheless, 'The Fabulous Four' is an amiable romp with the theme of finding a way to forgive a lifelong friend for a long-ago betrayal.

In terms of both screentime and providing the emotional core of the film, the leading lady is Sarandon. She plays Lou, a busy Manhattan surgeon with a love of exotic cats and Ernest Hemingway. We get the sense that Lou really needs to cut loose every once in a while.

That opportunity presents itself when college chums Alice (Mullally) and Kitty (Ralph) reach out to tell her that she's won a contest and the grand prize happens to be - drom roll - an exotic cat from the estate of Ernest Hemingway. What kind of contest was this? Just go with it. Cut to: Girls trip to Key West!

Of course, the whole thing was a ruse: the friends wanted to trick Lou into travelling to Florida for the wedding of her frienemy Marilyn (Midler). There's a ton of baggage there: back in the day, Marilyn stole Lou's boyfriend and wound up marrying him. Tensions and resentments simmer amid a backdrop of palm trees and Mai Tai's.

The movie's humor is quite broad: there's a parasailing mishap with cartoonish results and also a scene where Lou stops a fleeing purse-snatcher by using...ahem..."a lady parts friend" as a sling-shot and knocks the guy out. In keeping with the loopy tone of the film, three young partiers that Lou had met on the plane seem to keep popping up all over Key West. And we get a cameo from Michael Bolton.

Megan Mullally does what she does best as tipsy singer Alice. Recent Emmy-winner Sheryl Lee Ralph ("Abbott Elementary") is under-utilized as Kitty, an organic marijuana farmer, in a role originally written for Sissy Spaceck.

'The Fabulous Four' has a fabulous supporting cast that includes Bruce Greenwood, Sophie von Haselberg, Brandee Evans, David Goren and Nicholas Velez.

Unwatchable Dreck

These actresses who have done good to superb work in the past, ought to be ashamed. They chose this. To reviewers who justify that in some way they aren't fully responsible for their part in bringing this sludge to the screen (the writing "let them down"), please see that they have, in fact accepted this gig and committed fully to the ghastly mess that it is. They knew what they were doing.

Midler has decided that if it's good enough for Diane Keaton to grossly overact in tremendously trashy movies, it's ok for her too.

Do they need to pay owed taxes?

It's mind boggling the depths that these women have sunk to. But it's not all down to the script, the directing, the premise...They ALL do some massive heavy lifting in the unmitigated cheaply horrific acting department.

I am open to light fare. Distracting, fun, superficial and meaningless movies are not something I necessarily reject out of hand. (My preferences are generally more intelligent and challenging though, in my defense). I do, however make space for dreck on occasion.

This is the kind of dreck that I can tolerate for, I think it was, 10 minutes. The writing was on the wall quite quickly, And Bette Midler's compete lack of self awareness wrote it.

AMAZING cast with embarrassing script.

I am so upset over the way the movie was made. The had a stellar cast of amazing actresses and they gave them the most embarrassing, amateurish script. This movie could have been incredible with the right writers, directors and producers.

Who is responsible for the way this movie was made? These women can act their rear ends off and EVERY LINE was cringe. They should be ashamed of themselves.

The entire movie was an ad for TikTok.

The CGI parasailing - come on! You could've easily had real parasailing or just not done the parasailing at all. The adult sized Cat suit surgeon?

These women deserved better and you failed them. They are all at the age where working is more difficult for them than people decades younger than them. They had to get up and work hard for this??? They deserved a movie to make them shine like the icons that they are.

This movie could've been amazing. Shame on whoever is responsible for making it. I have seen High School productions made more professionally.

You owe them a better movie.

Fabulous flaw

Well what can I say... a tv movie script from the ninetees they found lying around that is totally predictable and blunt with a few unnecessary scenes leading to an allegedly funny situation, a bit of a problem that gets solved and some shameless tearjerking.

Not the worst actresses (and supporting actors) but they were not at the top game of their game here and there was chemistry missing.

I don't know what their intentions were with middle aged people (wich is kind of what this film is about), but we came out looking awful.

There was one hilarious scene, although not intentionally, where they dragged out a Michael Bolton statue from Madamme Toussaud's to get the party started. Now that was awkward! Great singer, but actor... sorry, not so much.

Better than what those first reviews said!

This movie was enjoyable and cute! I'm glad I came to see it. I love these classy ladies, and it was fun to see them again! This was also a nice little story with plenty of humor to keep the movie interesting. Nice backdrop in scenic and beautiful Florida Keys. Bette Midler and Susan Sarandon are both so beautiful and shined in their roles.

Even though this storyline is overused, it was done well in this film. I'm not as familiar with the other two actresses, but they were outstanding, too.

The chemistry was good between the make and female leads, which was nice. What really made this movie special was the wonderful portrayal of long time friendships and all the ins and outs of them over a lifetime.

Funny and legends at there best

The Fabulous Four is a comedy film that showcases the talents of four women over 65, part of the post-Book Club boom. The film serves as a reminder of the many actors who have been sidelined as they grow old in Hollywood. However, the film's mere existence allows the talented cast to try their best with hopelessly sub-par material. The moments in the film work are fleeting and almost entirely in the first half, as the women stoically try to overcome the obstacles put in their way by Ann Marie Allison and Jenna Milly's silly, slapdash script.

The film often relies on tiresome are-we-still-doing-this Crap cliche, such as Sarandon's workaholic surgeon Lou (AKA Diane Keaton). The film turns her into a Crazy Cat Lady, a woman without a husband or children putting any reserve non-work energy into her cat babies. Her obsession with owning one of the Ernest Hemingway Home's six-toed cats allows old friends Alice (Mullally) and Kitty (Ralph) to fool her into traveling to Florida for a cat raffle instead of dragging her along to the surprise wedding of Lou's one-time BFF and now longtime adversary Marilyn (Midler).

Australian director Jocelyn Moorhouse is unable to decide upon the right tone for any of the film, turning a big-screen opportunity into something more suited to the small screen. The film revolves around a wedding weekend in sunny Key West, with Marilyn getting married for the second time after her husband's death. The screenplay by Ann Marie Allison and Jenna Milly deploys gags that rely too much on TikTok and THC gummies, which can be distracting for boomers. Overall, The Fabulous Four is a frothy and entertaining film that showcases the power of friendship and the wacky adventures of accomplished women.

Delightful in every way!

We went to watch the film and we all loved it! It's fabulous and fun! I laughed and had tears.

The cast were amazing, esp. Bette - such an icon! She is so natural, just like someone living next door... What I like about the film the most is it actually connects multi-generations, and old friends. I brought my mother and my aunt; and I saw a 20-year-old in the theatre. The film reminded me of my besties in the high school, who I only see from time to time on Facebook. What drifted us apart: work, or social media? We need more films like this - to bring family and friends together, to share the value of family, friendship and love, and discover the meaning of life in a joyful way.

A perfect Sunday movie!

Easy to watch

I actually don't understand why this has got bad reviews. I think people have forgotten how nice it is to just sit back and enjoy something that's just plain easy to watch. You don't have to overthink it just sit back and enjoy some reasonable acting, some laughs and just a nice story line. Sometimes all you want is that easy afternoon film and that is what this is. There are some big names in this film and they deserve better reviews/ratings than some people have given this. It's pretty obvious what the film will be about and how it will go so if that's not your 'thing' then don't watch it and then slam it! I call these types of film 'simple entertainment' because that's what they do - simply entertain you!!

Fabulous Cast, Forgettable Film

The Fabulous Four is a film that squanders the promise of its star-studded cast with a poorly written script and a tonally confused narrative. Featuring powerhouse names like Bette Midler and Susan Sarandon, one would expect something far more compelling than this hollow, meandering attempt at comedy-drama.

The premise is thin and underdeveloped, relying on tired clichés of female friendship, ageing, and self-discovery without bringing anything new or insightful to the table. There's an obvious effort to emulate the heart and humour of classics like The First Wives Club or Calendar Girls, but it falls flat at nearly every turn. The emotional beats are forced, the humour feels outdated, and the dialogue is often cringe-inducing.

Midler and Sarandon, along with the rest of the ensemble, do what they can with the material, but even their considerable talents can't elevate a script this weak. Their chemistry is serviceable, but not enough to save scenes that feel more like sitcom outtakes than meaningful cinematic moments.

Visually, the film is passable, but even the production feels uninspired - bland settings, uninventive direction, and a soundtrack that tries too hard to be quirky. There's a sense that The Fabulous Four doesn't quite know what it wants to be: part feel-good reunion, part slapstick romp, part introspective journey - but it does none of these things well.

Ultimately, it's a disappointing misfire. Given the calibre of the cast, it's frustrating to see them wasted on such a flimsy, forgettable affair. A fabulous opportunity, sadly squandered.

Such a shame.

Why??

All this incredible actresses, loved and admired, in this bad direct movie?

Why? What happened?

The script is ok. What went wrong? Editing? Directions? Character building?

It's was rushed.

Susan is wonderful. Bette is always funny. Megan and Sheryl Lee a dynamic duo. I enjoy them so much.

If the movie makers did use more time and taking the time to develop this characters, apart and together, the results would been a better and consistent movie.

Why did they rush? The cast was dynamite and the results were just a little "puff".

Where the AI involved in this?

I'm so sorry for the cast. Because they are grate!
