Although this Canadian movie got a theatrical release in Canada much wider than the typical Canadian movie, for some reason its distributor, Elevation Pictures, decided not to give the movie a substantial marketing budget. As a result, the movie did poorly at the box office, and was pulled from most theaters at the end of its third week or release.
According to Irena's biography on Wikipedia, the facts are as told in the film, including the Jews helping with villa cleaning chores. Additionally, before the story begins, during the Nazi-Soviet invasion of 1939, while in nursing school, she was in hiding but discovered by Russian soldiers, who beat and raped her. She also witnessed the killing of the baby, as depicted in the film.
In 2012, ex-Nazi officer Eduard Rügemer was recognized and honored by Yad Vashem as one of the German Righteous Among the Nations.
The film was shot in 2022 in Warsaw and Lublin, Poland.
