I picked this up, thinking it was another British production in the vein of Foyle's war, which I thought was excellent. Initially, I was quite confused and couldn't understand the lack of accents. Of course, I quickly clued in that it was a Canadian show.
It feels pretty authentic and has lots of great details. The stories are quite compelling and the acting top notch. Cinematography is good too, and the photography looks movie quality to me and doesn't have the "cheap" look of so many Canadian productions.
On the downside, there is just a little too little exterior photography. Obviously this would be expensive, but the show suffers for it and feels a little "sitcom-ish" and confined in the way it tends to cut from interior to interior with very little outdoor footage, especially city scenes. I understand why, but still miss them. Maybe Season 2 will have a bigger budget.
My only other (minor) complaint is that it tries a bit too hard for the drama. It seems that every character has some secret burden, so there is no "everywoman" for the audience to identify with among the main few roles. Instead of seeing how the war and times affected most people, we're seeing what it was like for closeted homosexuals, the victims of evangelicals and oppressed socialites. I suppose the closest to an everyday person is the girl who loses her husband, but she's more supporting cast than lead. Anyway, minor issue.
Overall, a good show, one that Canadians should be proud of.

I'm surprised to see that it's only got 5/10 so far in ratings. I'm a relatively picky viewer, easily losing interest after the first episode of a show isn't able to grab me. This one did! Part of me wonders if it would hold much interest for the average male viewer, though-- despite the climate of warfare and the homegrown Canadian backdrop, the show focuses on the ladies and their lives, and I can't imagine my boyfriend watching/enjoying it.
I agree with the previous posts about the stellar acting, and don't have much to add in that respect. At the end of the day--- I'll be following it obsessively. ;)

Love the show..i think every Canadian should watch and see what really went on in this Country..and how we stepped up when we had to...!Looking forward to weekly episodes and more..great writing and acting, nothing is held back,no sugar coating for T.V I like the aggressive aspect,so you know how it was for these ladies,my grandmother worked the steel plant during the war, when my grandfather was overseas,The forgotten Canadians contributed so much it is nice they do get the recognition they deserve in shows like this, again to remind us how thankful we should be and how lucky we are.Hoping for more.
Thank You

I am so frustrated at learning that this only a mini series and not a series at all and that this was the last episode.
I have watched this from the beginning like a moth to a flame with anticipation of what is going to happen next.
The story lines were creative. Meg is a wonderful actress as are the rest of the cast who do an amazing job.
I'd like to see more.
Why is that good Canadian shows never last. This has to change. I'm sure that there can be more effort put into more airings. People I've spoken to say they are loving it too.

This series brings reality to the screen and back into our living rooms. Well written, excellent actors and it looks like we're going to see more than just the "war" side of things. Betty, do you have a crush on Kate? This show reminds me of the stories my mother told me when I was a little girl, about the work that women were thrown into during WWII and how many obstacles they had to overcome, especially from the prejudice that surrounded the woman that went out and tried to do something for the war effort. Thanks for putting something out there that is worth an hour of my time! It sure is a nice change from the sitcoms and dramas that have been thrown at us over the last few years.
