Directed by Derek Braasch in his feature film debut, The Icing makes excellent use of lighting and filming in gritty Chicago locations. Right from the beginning, we're plunged into a world of rusty rail yards, neon lights, and suspicious phone calls late at night. Kelly LaMont steals the show playing femme fatale Marilyn Bellows, who lures the doomed protagonist Fin Scott (Tony Marino) into an assassination scheme targeting a state senator.
The budget for The Icing isn't the highest, but that ends up working in the movie's favor. There's a beautiful simplicity and gritty authenticity to every scene. I recommend it to all modern film noir fans!
