The film was to be released on October 10, 2025 which would've marked the 20th anniversary of the original Avatar: La leyenda de Aang (2005) television series as well as the 15th anniversary of the first and only live action film El último maestro del aire (2010). However, it was pushed to January 20, 2026 after being revealed at CinemaCon.
The original writer and director from the Avatar: The Last Airbender series are making this film, which is stated to be the first in a trilogy.
This will be the second theatrical feature film based on the Avatar: La leyenda de Aang (2005) television series ever since El último maestro del aire (2010) as well as the first one to be an animated movie and not be shown in live action.
Dante Basco, who is set to play Zuko in the film, is the only actor to reprise his role from Avatar: La leyenda de Aang (2005) so far.
The word "avatar" is not used in the film's title to avoid comparisons with James Cameron's science fiction franchise of the same name.
