Superior Entertainment

You might have noticed that the other reviewers are British. And they lament that this show is not available in the U.S. Well it is now.

If you like magic--sleight of hand, comedic routines, or the big production numbers--you should like this show. Penn & Teller are Las Vegas headliners and staunch advocates for the field of magic. Here they invite other magicians to perform tricks/illusions that they, P&T, cannot solve. There is a certain level of trust required in this. First, you must believe them when they say there are no camera tricks, no editing tricks, and that the viewer (you) is seeing what they themselves see live. Secondly, you must trust that when they say they have solved a trick, they actually have.

There is no reason not to trust them. They have a reputation of being totally honest. If you watch some of Penn's videos on the internet, you will find that he always speaks his mind and, evidently, cares not one whit for conformity. Also, there is an honor among those who practice the magic arts. It stretches back centuries. When P&T say they have unraveled the mystery of an illusion, without saying too much about the solution (because they do not want to spoil it), you can bet they have. They appreciate artistry and craftsmanship. They can be lavish in their praise for those who have mastered an illusion, even if P&T are not fooled by it.

Occasionally they are fooled. In those cases, the magician gets an expense-paid trip to Las Vegas and the opportunity to perform on their stage.

You have probably seen some of these tricks. Others are very original. But the level of the performances is always high. No fooling.

Update 9/16/2016: If there is doubt about whether or not P&T have effectively deciphered a trick, there are judges to make the final decision. They are the final arbiters. I have seen them decide that P&T were fooled when P&T thought they had the solution.

Fun Show, Good Platform for Magicians

Penn & Teller aren't strangers to the tube. They've hosted game shows, appeared on reality shows and talk shows, and hosted the long running Showtime series "Bull*hit". However, they are best known for being a magic act in Las Vegas that combines comedy with illusions and some great effects as well. They finally have a show on TV that gives them the platform to do what they do best, but now they've opened it up for other magicians as well on "Fool Us."

The concept is pretty simple. Four magicians from around the globe come to Vegas to perform one act in front of Penn & Teller. The magicians range from masters of card tricks, to mentalists, to prop artists and many more. After the act, Penn & Teller briefly confer and, in traditional magician form, declare they know how the trick is done using code words (like all magicians, they follow the code of not revealing how a trick is done) or admit they have no idea how it's done. If their guess is wrong or they are stumped, they tell the magician that he/she "fooled us" and the magician wins a trophy and is invited back to Vegas to open for Penn & Teller. After four magicians, Penn & Teller perform a trick of their own from their wide array of tricks.

The best part about the show is how unlike other reality shows it is. Penn & Teller are positive, encouraging and very supportive of the magicians, whether they fooled them or not. There seems to be a certain level of respect between the hosts and the contestants that you don't see on many shows these days. Also, there is little "drama" or side stories like some reality shows like to emphasize now. It sticks to magic, the art and love of it, and letting up and coming magicians have the opportunity to display their skills to a wide audience.

It's enjoyable, informational, and even educational. I recommend Fool Us to anyone looking to be awed.

Very cool show

Great to see Penn and Teller still in action after 30 plus years in magic. Hosted by Jonathan Ross i thoroughly enjoyed this 1 hour special, after all who doesn't like a bit of magic? To get that universal feeling of "hey, how did you do that?" brings back a lot of good memories. Also the duo performed 2 tricks of their own on the TV special which was definitely too good to be true, got my money's worth. I think its great that ITV got the chance to broadcast this because here in London at least, you don't get to see much magic acts aired on television.

My only regret is that the show wasn't longer, that's just how glued I was. Misdirection is an amazing talent that most of us will never master but man it's amazing to see it in action with those magicians.

A talent show I can watch & enjoy

I don't do reality TV. I don't do all these so called talent shows. Nor do I watch celebrity this, Z factor that, nobody's got talent, or celebrity get me out of here dancing with has-beens on ice Big Brother. I'll stop myself there before I write paragraphs of rant about the turgid state of current prime time television - because I could quite easily. This, however, is *exactly* what *should* be on prime time TV. Family friendly. Amusing and entertaining. Two unquestionably talented guys at the peak of their profession, watching along with the audience and us at home, fellow practitioners of their art trying to "fool" them. There are no *freaks* put in front of us for us to laugh at (unless you count Jonathan Ross), nor are there any talentless buffoons for us to pity. This is a proper talent show. People at the top of their game - Penn & Teller - giving fellow (talented) magicians and illusionists a platform to showcase their skills. It's not judgmental. It's not confrontational. And some of the highest praise from P&T is reserved for acts that haven't fooled them, but who have such great technique and execution it seems to have genuinely moved them.

Wonderful show

This is wonderful television in the true sense of "wonder". Fool Us! makes for a refreshing change from the usual homogenised mass of formula drama & reality shows. There really is nothing quite like it around.

With the best European illusionists & card masters it is full of interesting people who have incredible skills. There is nothing mean or nasty about this show. Penn doesn't even swear so it is a perfect show for bright kids as well as adults (grown-ups?)

Jonathon Ross (Jonafon Woss??) does a pretty good job as compere. If you haven't seen Fool Us! yet, I recommend you go find it! And that's no BS!

Most entertaining TV show in a while

This a truly outstanding TV show that brings highly talented magicians to the screen. Jonathan Ross does his job really well and Penn&Teller do a wonderful job of honoring true talents who come to the show to fool them. Nothing is controversial, Penn is courteous when dealing with fellow magicians, and the magicians accept defeat with humility, also Penn&Teller do a good job of keeping the methods secret when describing how the tricks are done, which helps keep the mystifying aspect of the tricks: the 'magic' is never totally gone even after Penn explains the methods used. Almost all of the acts are exciting and have a wow factor, which provide non-stop entertainment with very little filler to artificially boost the length of the show.

Don't be fooled!

I generally quite like this show as it's just fun to watch. But there are a few things that are starting to really bother me. Yes, it's reality TV and so there is going to be some things left out, but at some point if you know it's all fake it isn't as much fun.

Specifically: they are editing some performances to make them seem impossible; performances that SURELY did not fool them get some made up story about how it really DID fool them so they can get the performer in their Vegas act; they are re-using audience reactions to tricks for multiple episodes/performances; Penn & Teller are hamming up their fake reactions to tricks that don't deserve such a reaction.

Vegas and Hollywood together...I shouldn't be surprised?

Really enjoy watching this show

There are very few TV shows that I watch on a regular basis that I find truly entertaining but fool us is one of those shows. It's not so out right scripted so you really can't tell exactly what's going to happen. Hopefully this show will continue to be aired for many years to come.

Lost its edge

We're massive Penn-Teller fans - my wife "did" the joke-book trick with them in Vegas - and I'd love to give the show a 9 or 10, but the show definitely lost something after moving from the UK after 2 seasons.

Changing hosts didn't help. Jonathon Ross was cheeky and fast on his feet while Alyson Hannigan comes across like a kid selling raffle tickets. However, her blandness is consistent with how the show is now safer and tailored to a middle American audience.

After all, the duo became conjuring superstars by pairing Penn's staggering stage presence with Teller's skills - they were hip and "dangerous" and perfectly fit shows like SNL and early Letterman.

That time has faded. The pair compliment all the acts, as they should, but the whole vibe has softened and been tooled to never tease or offend. That's a shame as the magic is still great but the experience is pure vanilla.

Volume Control

I was able to get tickets a while back to see the show. I enjoyed it very much. Watching it at home is completely different. My complaint about watching it at home is Alyson. Someone needs to talk with Alyson Hannigan - news flash - you're wearing a microphone - no need to YELL when you introduce a magician. I find it really annoying. Lower the volume Alyson.

Excellent show! Bring it to the US!

I love P&T, and this show is incredible. The show features up-and-coming illusionists who perform in front of the studio audience as well as P&T, and P&T attempt to figure out how the illusion was done. Some of the acts are absolutely incredible, and the production quality of the show is outstanding. Good camera work, not a lot of filler, etc.

My only regret is that it's not available in the US. You can't even WATCH it on ITV's website if you're in the US - bummer! You can, however, watch some clips on Youtube, just enough to give you a real desire to be able to see the show in its entirety. It appears that it is still being produced(?) in July 2011. Maybe Mr. Davey will be approached to produce an American version of the show - I sure hope so!

I Just Like the Acts

To be honest, I don't care if the magicians fool Penn & Teller or not, I just like seeing them perform. Every act is good. They can't even begin to be on the show unless they've honed in their talent and made it so air tight and professional that they even have a chance of fooling Penn & Teller; not too mention new and innovative. It's great when they fool Penn & Teller, and I'm happy for them, but the show would be good even if they never fooled them.

awesome

And one who loves magic will simply enjoy the show. the tricks aren't given away like someone might think as P&T do a great job of code words. I might wonder whether sometimes if they really get the trick except having seen the show where they brought someone back out that they had solved but really had fooled them. So although it's behind the scenes, they make sure the show is legit.

I love magic and mystery! Penn and Teller are always funny as a duo! ✨

I love Penn and Teller. They're my favorite magic duo in the world. I've always wanted to go to Las Vegas and see their show and performance. I like watching this show and my eyes would see if the magician would use fast tricks in the blink of an eye. The entertainment value of a magic show would always impress me. I would always clap my hands.

Penn and Teller would figure out how the magician does the trick and they know for sure that they wouldn't be fooled. Sometimes they get fooled and magician wins the "Fool Us" trophy. That's what I like about. I even like their show stoppers before the end of the show. Magicians and illusionists are my favorite group of entertainment.

Get her out!

I love the Penn and Teller ; Fool Us program. But Brooke Burke needs to go. She is so fake and demands attention on this program. It's not about her! It's about Penn and Teller and the magicians. Her voice is so nasally. I don't watch the program if she is on. Bring back Alyson or someone like her...just get rid of Burke. There's nothing more to say. She is very fake and you can tell in her performance on each show. She doesn't even seem like she enjoys the job. She portrays very stuck up, conceited, big head conceited Please get rid of her!!! I want to watch the show each week but do not since she's on I will not do watch... ..

Fun!

I saw this show for the first time a few nights ago, and was highly entertained in seeing the experts dissect various magic tricks by performers on stage, and then admitting when they had been fooled.

The format is simple; Penn and Teller sit at the front of a stage and watch various prestidigitators perform their tricks on stage to see if the legendary duo of Penn and Teller can reverse engineer or deduce how they did their trick.

The only down-shot is that they will, for the sake of keeping the essence of the trick, a secret, sometimes use magicians jargon or stage lingo to get their point across to the performer on stage, and in this way communicate to both us and the audience that they either know how the trick was done, or are sufficiently impressed that they have been fooled.

But even then, they do reveal and otherwise convey to us the basics of some of the tools the performers use to create their illusions.

I had fun watching this show as I watched and tried to figure out how each trick might have been done. And I found myself being right a significant part of the time. It was very interesting and entertaining.

For anyone who's been to a magic show, wants to see magic, but is curious how any of the tricks were done, then you must see this very basic yet very remarkable show.

Enjoy!

Brilliant entertainment

I absolutely love watching these shows. Not only are Penn & Teller their usual brilliant selves but to be able to watch incredible magic acts from around the world is just so special. The shows are always upbeat and fun and it's great to watch P&T enjoy the acts themselves.. and even better when they are genuinely fooled! They love it, the performer loves it and we, the audience, love it. Then we get to watch them perform a trick at the end of the show so it's great entertainment and a leg-up in the industry for the winning acts.

Great show

...but it seems the host is too eager to be the prim and proper schoolmarm who is too easily shocked by things she would have smacked with a flute at Band Camp.

Wonderful tricks that don't involve the quintessential 'STRANGER' from the audience which of course the magician has never met but they always pick the volunteer.

You have to love the economics for the show. Not a bad looking trophy but it's the only thing magicians get if they're lucky and then they can perform on Penn and Tellers regular show. Nice to make money from a show that is actually an audition for their main show. Altogether a fun show to watch.
