‘Predator: Badlands’ Teaser Trailer: Elle Fanning Plays Twin Sisters Running From an Alien Predator
Image
20th Century Studios has released the trailer for “Predator: Badlands,” the sixth installment in the beloved action sci-fi franchise. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the film stars Elle Fanning as two twin sisters.

Trachtenberg previously directed “Prey,” the last installment in the “Predator” film series. “Prey” was released exclusively on Hulu and went on to score four nominations at the 2024 Emmys. It would take home the win for outstanding sound editing. Trachtenberg’s other directorial bouts include films like “10 Cloverfield Lane,” and shows such as “The Lost Symbol,” “The Boys,” “Black Mirror” and “BlackBoxTV.”

Fanning recently starred as Russian monarch Cathrine the Great in three seasons of Hulu’s “The Great” and starred opposite Timothée Chalamet as Sylvie Russo in James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.” Some of her former credits include “Super 8,” “Maleficent,” “Trumbo,” “The Boxtrolls,” “The Neon Demon” and “B’Twixt Now and Sunrise.

Twixt: Val Kilmer and Horror
Image
We lost one of the all-time greats this month. Val Kilmer could and did do it all, from stage to writing to acting to producing, directing, and even singing on more than just The Doors movie soundtrack. Tyler Nichols recently released a wonderfully thoughtful list of his top 10 performances and while we can argue on the order depending on when and how you saw him first, you can’t argue with all the entries being great watches. Unfortunately, you can’t say the same about Kilmer’s horror output. While he had some genuinely fun horror adjacent titles like Red Planet, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and Ghost of Darkness – which, I kid you not, can be looked at as a slasher movie starring lions – much of his horror was straight to video. One that wasn’t straight to video and has a more interesting story about its making than...

'Thank You Val': Tom Cruise Pays Tribute to Top Gun Co-Star and 'Dear Friend' Val Kilmer
Image
Tom Cruise attended CinemaCon Las Vegas to promote his upcoming film, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. However, he also took the time to share a tribute to his late Top Gun co-star, Val Kilmer.

Kilmer passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65. His daughter confirmed the news, and several actors have spoken up and shared tributes for the beloved star. Cruise, who worked with Kilmer on Top Gun and its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, took a moment at CinemaCon to honor Val Kilmer, per The Hollywood Reporter.

"I’d like to honor a dear friend of mine Val Kilmer for a moment," Cruise said as he took the stage. "I can’t tell you how much I admired his work." The action star highlighted how much he admired Kilmer and cherished him as a human being. He also explained that he was grateful that the late actor made...

Tom Cruise Holds a Moment of Silence for ‘Dear Friend’ Val Kilmer
Image
Tom Cruise honored the late Val Kilmer with a moment of silence on the CinemaCon stage in Las Vegas, asking the crowd of exhibitors and press to take a moment to remember all the great film moments Kilmer gave audiences in his career and the “wonderful times we had with him.”

“I’d like to take a moment to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer,” Cruise said. “I really can’t tell you how much I admire his work, how much I thought of him as a human being and how grateful and honored I was when he joined ‘Top Gun’ and came back for ‘Top Gun: Maverick.'”

Kilmer died on Tuesday at age 65, dying of pneumonia after having previously struggled with throat cancer that made it incredibly difficult to speak. He had recovered enough to appear in 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Cruise, who took the stage...

What Happened To The Cast Of The Willow Movie?
Image
It seems odd to refer to 1988's "Willow" as "the Willow movie," but that's because every nostalgic intellectual property is ripe for refreshing in the modern franchise era, and "Willow" finally got a sequel streaming series on Disney+, also called "Willow." Over 30 years passed between the two, and that's a lot of time for actors to change or even pass away. Warwick Davis' passion for his biggest lead role without special effects makeup never waned, and his enthusiasm is palpable still as he struggles to get the series reclaimed from the Disney vault into which it quickly vanished (and we know the annoying reason why).

The original movie, written by George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard, was an attempt to do for fantasy what "Star Wars" had done for science fiction, and it even featured groundbreaking special effects, like the first use of digital morphing. It was a box office disappointment in its day,...

Critic’s Appreciation: Val Kilmer, an Unclassifiable Heartthrob Who Always Had an Edge
Image
For anyone who grew up watching movies in the 1980s, Val Kilmer, who died Tuesday, was something of an anomaly among the young Hollywood actors whose careers blew up during that decade.

Compared to Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Emilio Estevez, Robert Downey Jr., John Cusack or Tom Hanks, to name a handful of stars who emerged back then, Kilmer was not exactly a strapping action hero nor a smooth heartbreak kid. Nor did he come across as a brooding Method-style thespian, or as someone who could provide instant comic relief onscreen.

In some ways, Kilmer was all of these things at once, and therefore unclassifiable. He was mostly a great character actor with the looks of a leading man, capable of melting into roles that almost invariably had an edge to them.

His most memorable films, including Top Gun, The Doors, Tombstone and Heat, were popular hits in...

Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Mann, Josh Brolin, and More Remember Val Kilmer: He Was a ‘Joy to Know’
Image
Late actor Val Kilmer is being honored by Hollywood. Kilmer, who died at age 65 of pneumonia after battling throat cancer for more than a decade, was a go-to star in the 1980s and ’90s across both high concept blockbusters and auteur dramas. Now, his former collaborators are remembering his talent.

Kilmer landed his breakout role as Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky alongside Tom Cruise in 1986’s “Top Gun. He went on to portray Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors,” and star in “Tombstone,” “True Romance,” “Heat,” and “Batman Forever,” among other iconic features. Kilmer later reprised his turn of Iceman in 2022 film “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, leaving him unable to speak. Kilmer’s recovery was captured in 2021 documentary “Val.” He died of pneumonia at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday, April 1.

“Heat” director Michael Mann honored Kilmer, writing, “While working with Val...

Michael Mann, Francis Ford Coppola, Josh Brolin Remember Val Kilmer: ‘Smart, Challenging, Brave’

Val Kilmer crossed paths with countless figures in Hollywood throughout his four-decade career, with his presence and influence spanning even further on screen. Now, former collaborators, co-stars, and admirers are remembering the Batman Forever and Top Gun actor, who died on Tuesday at the age of 65.

“See ya, pal. I’m going to miss you. You were a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker. There’s not a lot left of those,” Josh Brolin wrote on Instagram beneath a photo of himself with Kilmer. “I hope to see you up there...

Val Kilmer Honored by Michael Mann, Ron Howard, Cher for Leaving an ‘Indelible Cinematic Mark’
Image
Val Kilmer died on Tuesday at the age of 65 due to pneumonia — and now, his peers in Hollywood are paying tribute to one of the biggest stars of the late 1980s and early ‘90s.

The late actor was well-known for his roles in films like “Top Gun,” “Batman Forever,” “Tombstone,” “Mindhunters,” “Heat,” “The Prince of Egypt,” “Willow” and “The Doors,” as well as his 2021 self-shot documentary “Val” that depicted his battle with throat cancer.

However, his friends, former co-stars and directors such as Ron Howard, Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Mann, Josh Brolin and even ex-girlfriend Cher more fondly remember him as someone who left an “indelible cinematic mark” on generations of fans.

“Twixt” director Francis Ford Coppola shared on Instagram: “Val Kilmer was the most talented actor when in his High School, and that talent only grew greater throughout his life. He was a wonderful person to work with and...

Michael Mann, Josh Brolin, and More Pay Tribute to Val Kilmer
Image
Hollywood is mourning today following the death of the much-loved and celebrated actor Val Kilmer. The star, known for his iconic performances in Batman Forever, Top Gun, and Heat (to name but a few), died on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, aged 65, from pneumonia. Tributes immediately started to pour in for Kilmer once the news of his death was announced, with Michael Mann and Josh Brolin among the top entertainment industry figures paying their respects. They reflected on the unique qualities the late actor possessed that shone through the various roles he brought to the screen during his diverse acting career.

Filmmaker Michael Mann, who famously directed Kilmer alongside fellow Hollywood heavyweights Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Jon Voight in the critically acclaimed 1995 crime-thriller Heat, remembered Kilmer for his "range" and "brilliant variability" as an actor. He said in a statement, per Variety:

"While working with Val on Heat I always marveled at the range,...

Val Kilmer Is Dead at 65
Image
The iconic actor Val Kilmer, best known for roles such as Jim Morrison in 1991's The Doors and "Ice" (Adm. Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky), in 1986's Top Gun, has died at the age of 65 according to his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, who told The New York he died of pneumonia on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. This follows a decade of medical issues for Kilmer. The actor's final film fittingly found him reprising his role as 'Iceman' in Top Gun: Maverick, though the actor would continue to be involved in the arts with his painting. His final Facebook post, on March 22, 2025, included his last painting. He wrote, "It’s got that late-night glow. Cool tones with a low burn, like when the camp fire cools down but you’re still wide awake." Rest in peace, sir.

Michael Mann, Francis Ford Coppola, Josh Brolin and More Remember Val Kilmer: ‘A Brilliant Actor and a Good Man’
Image
Tributes have poured in for Val Kilmer. The actor who played Bruce Wayne in “Batman Forever,” and channeled as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone‘s “The Doors” and starred in several other 1980s favorites, has died, The New York Times has confirmed. He was 65. He had been battling throat cancer for several years.

Michael Mann, who directed Kilmer alongside Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Jon Voight in the much-praised 1995 action-thriller “Heat,” remember the actor as bringing a “powerful current” to movie.

“While working with Val on ‘Heat’ I always marveled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character. After so many years of Val battling disease and maintaining his spirit, this is tremendously sad news,” Mann said in a statement.

Francis Ford Coppola, who directed Kilmer in “Twixt,” paid tribute to him on Instagram. “Val Kilmer was the most talented...

The Two Biggest Cinematic Fiascos Of 2024 Diverge In One Fascinating Way
Image
This article contains mild spoilers for "Megalopolis" and "Joker: Folie à Deux."

The film industry has just experienced what seems to me an unprecedented two week span of outrageous misfortune. If we trust the high end of their estimated budgets, Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" and Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" combined to gross a mere $44 million on exorbitant budgets totaling $344 million.

On the surface, "Megalopolis" would appear to be the bigger disaster; now in its second weekend, the $136 million production has amassed only a paltry $6 million. Granted, Coppola sold his Sonoma Country wineries and borrowed against his new ownership stake in the company that absorbed them to personally finance his physically and intellectually ambitious epic. It's not my money, so I don't care to discuss the wisdom of Coppola's investment; what matters to me is that a massive, star-studded film made without the support of a firmly established...

Cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. Comes Full Circle with ‘Megalopolis’
Image
In 2007, Mihai Malaimare Jr. was a 29-year-old cinematographer working in Romania when he got his filmmaking dream job: shooting “Youth Without Youth” for Francis Ford Coppola as Coppola returned to the director’s chair for the first time in 10 years. Coppola wanted to reinvent himself and was looking for a partner who wouldn’t be afraid of trying new things, and in Malaimare, he found a willing and eager co-conspirator. “Even when he had what I thought was a crazy idea, I thought, ‘Well, it’s Francis Coppola so I better try it,'” Malaimare told IndieWire. “Then you try it and realize how much better the scene looks.”

Malaimare became Coppola’s cinematographer of choice on the movies that followed: “Tetro,” “Twixt,” and now “Megalopolis,” all of them self-financed experiments with which Coppola has attempted to find his own unique style after over 60 years of filmmaking. On “Megalopolis,” Coppola...

Megalopolis: What did you think of Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project
Francis Ford Coppola
One of the most controversial movies of the year is certainly Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Not only did Coppola spend decades putting together his futuristic fable, but he also sunk a chunk of his personal fortune into the $100 million-plus epic, only to have it met with jeers from many (but not all) critics following its screenings at Cannes, TIFF and more.

To be sure, this isn’t even close to the first time Coppola’s flirted with disaster as a filmmaker. While The Godfather 1 & 2, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now are rightly regarded as all-timers, Coppola had a massive flop with One from the Heart, a movie that plunged him into bankruptcy, as well as The Cotton Club (which I kinda like), Tucker, Jack, Twixt, and more than a few others.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Megalopolis has split critics right down the middle, earning a 50% Tomato-meter score, while the audience...

Francis Ford Coppola’s Box Office Highs and Lows: 62 Years of (Often) Living Dangerously
Image
October 25 will mark 62 years since the release of the first film directed by Francis Ford Coppola: “Come on Out” (later retitled “Tonight for Sure”), a re-edited feature version of three different shorter nudie films he made while a film student at UCLA. It debuted in 1962, right in the middle of the Cuban missile crisis.

With “Megalopolis” opening, he likely has the longest feature film directorial career ever, ahead of Manoel de Oliveira (61 years), Jean-Luc Godard (58), Jerzy Skolimowsky (58), and Frederick Wiseman (56). Clint Eastwood, whose latest film “Juror #2” premieres next month, spans a mere 53 as a director.

To sustain a career that long necessitates a lot of success, which Coppola has had, led by “The Godfather.” But it has been a perilous journey, elongated (“Megalopolis” the most extreme) by his willingness to spend money to keep directing. Of note, his last studio-financed film was “The Rainmaker,” 27 years — and nearly half his career — ago.

What The Worst Critic Reviews Say About Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis
Image
The cinematic event of the year is finally upon us now that Francis Ford Coppola's (presumable) swan song "Megalopolis" is playing in theaters, although the overall reactions couldn't be more mixed. In terms of pure drama, the months-long lead up to its release might go down as something just as shocking and over the top as the film itself has been described. Long before the general public ever set eyes upon this passion project about the rise and fall of an empire, the internet has been packed with headlines about behind-the-scenes troubles, alleged sexual harassment, and even a bizarre controversy resulting from AI-generated review pull-quotes.

It's been a wild saga to get to this point, and that's without even getting into the actual reviews of the film. /Film's Chris Evangelista ended up more on the mixed-positive side of the debate in his "Megalopolis" review, calling it a "sprawling, confusing,...

Some screenings of Megalopolis will feature a live theater component
Image
As ambitious as Megalopolis is, one factor that Francis Ford Coppola wanted to push even further was the fact that he included a scene that featured a “live theater” component in which a person from the audience would stand in front of the screen and briefly interact with Adam Driver‘s character on screen. Coppola instituted this unique fourth wall-break at the Cannes screenings and certain IMAX presentations have also played out the scene with a microphone set up at the foot of the screen and the picture shrinking to a size so that Driver’s character can make somewhat eye contact with the person in the theater.

Obviously, it would be a monumental task for every single theater screening to incorporate a plant in the audience to bring this moment to life, but IndieWire reports that over 20 markets in North America will feature this live participant component to the film.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Plans for Amazon’s Alexa to Let ‘Megalopolis’ Viewers Question Adam Driver Were Thwarted by Layoffs
Image
While “Megalopolis” was in pre-production in 2021, Francis Ford Coppola presented Amazon with a unique idea: the director asked if the company would create a customized version of Alexa to be used in specific theaters. As Coppola told The Telegraph in a new interview, audiences would have the opportunity to ask Adam Driver’s character a question about what had transpired in the movie so far — and Alexa would choose the most relevant answer from a pre-approved list.

“Imagine!” Coppola said. “You could see ‘Megalopolis’ five times in its opening week and it would be different each time! It would have been the future of the movies and ancient theater rolled into one!”

Unfortunately, things didn’t pan out due to layoffs at Amazon that resulted in thousands of jobs cut from the Alexa team, including those working on the project for “Megalopolis.” Coppola didn’t plan to move forward with...

Real Reason Francis Ford Coppola Made ‘Megalopolis’ Despite Having to Spend $120 Million From His Own Pocket Will Melt the Hearts of Even His Staunchest Haters
Image
Francis Ford Coppola made the shocking decision to fund his project Megalopolis from his own pocket through his winery. The veteran filmmaker has been trying to get the film off the ground for decades, but it has been delayed many times due to revisions and false starts.

After selling a part of his winery estate, he was able to finance the movie. It was a passion project that started when he was doing 1979’s Apocalypse Now. Its ambitious plot is its selling point, but the changes in his life, according to Coppola, were what drove him to bring it finally to the screen.

‘Megalopolis’ Cuts Ties With Marketing Consultant Behind Trailer Debacle; Fabricated Critic Quotes Were Generated By AI
Following its recent debacle involving fabricated trailer quotes, Lionsgate’s Francis Ford Coppola epic Megalopolis has cut ties with marketing consultant Eddie Egan, sources have confirmed to Deadline.

Lionsgate declined comment. But we hear that the quotes featured in yesterday’s trailer, revealed by Vulture to be fake, were found to have been generated by AI following an investigation. The materials fell under the purview of Egan, who prior to his work as an independent consultant, held executive posts at STXfilm and assorted major studios.

In the immediate aftermath of the trailer snafu, some questioned whether the fake quotes were part of a a marketing ploy purposefully designed to keep the film in the headlines. But we’re told this couldn’t be further from the truth. Rather, the situation should be looked at as a cautionary tale, as neither Egan nor Lionsgate was out to intentionally fabricate quotes. Megalopolis Trailer's Fake Reviews Lead to Apology from Lionsgate
Image
Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis has been accused of fabricating fake reviews from legendary film critics for its recent trailer, leading to the new preview being removed from online platforms. Megalopolis is a passion project that Coppola funded himself, and perhaps it was therefore expected that a lot of critics would not be on the same wavelength as the director. When making its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the premiere immediately led to a mixed reception and that, in turn, instigated a strange response via the latest trailer.

Costing over $100 million and set for a September 27, 2024 release date, the new trailer for the film begins with a series of written quotes that were supposedly written by great critics such as Pauline Kael, Andrew Sarris, and Rogert Ebert about Coppola's greatest movies such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. The idea was to plant the idea in the audience's minds...

Lionsgate Recalling ‘Megalopolis’ Trailer Amid Fabricated Quote Controversy: “We Screwed Up”
Image
In a highly unusual move, Lionsgate is pulling its new trailer for Megalopolis, unveiled early this morning.

The decision comes following controversy over critic quotes featured in the trailer, which digging by Vulture and other outlets revealed to be fabricated.

“Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for Megalopolis,” said a spokesperson for the studio. “We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”

The quotes featured in the Megalopolis trailer highlight previous “criticisms” of Coppola’s now-iconic works, such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, by such famed critics as The New Yorker’s Pauline Kael and Village Voice’s Andrew Sarris. With reference to The Godfather, for instance, Kael is quoted as calling the film “diminished by its artsiness,” with Sarris referring to it as a “sloppy self-indulgent movie.

Megalopolis Continuing One Big Francis Ford Coppola Trend Is A Great Sign For His Divisive Sci-Fi Movie
Image
Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola's passion project, has a mixed reception but benefits from an R-rating, following the success of his previous R-rated films. The R-rating allows Coppola to maintain full creative control and explore the film's unique, original world, potentially attracting viewers who appreciate its darkness and oddities. Megalopolis' R-rating may limit its box office potential by excluding younger audiences, but it could also pique the interest of adult viewers.

Francis Ford Coppola's passion project, Megalopolis, is set to be released this year, and though the movie's reactions are mixed, one trend of the film makes it undoubtedly better. Since the 1960s and '70s, Francis Ford Coppola's movies have been a staple of Hollywood, including iconic films like The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now. Because of this, each time he debuts a new project, it is highly anticipated. Notably, he hasn't released a movie since 2013's Twixt. However,...

The Exorcism's Ryan Simpkins Talks Love Of Horror, Friendship With Russell Crowe & Relatable Character
Image
Ryan Simpkins continues their reign in the horror genre with The Exorcism as Lee Miller, tackling a unique and meta twist to the subgenre. Simpkins prepared for the role by rewatching The Exorcist and drawing inspiration from Ellen Burstyn's performance. Simpkins had a natural rapport with Russell Crowe on set, highlighting his loyalty and giving nature as an actor.

Ryan Simpkins makes their return to the horror genre with The Exorcism. Francis Ford Coppola's Bonkers Megalopolis Finally Has A Distributor — Here's When You Can See It
Image
Francis Ford Coppola has done the seemingly impossible and secured North American distribution for his ambitious "Megalopolis." The film, which Coppola self-financed, wrote, directed, and produced, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, but hadn't secured a North American distributor by the end of the event. Now, however, Lionsgate Studios has confirmed that it will distribute "Megalopolis" in the U.S. and Canada.

IMAX already confirmed it would show the $120 million feature, and the film had previously secured several international distribution deals. But Coppola has now secured full theatrical distribution in the U.S. and Canada too, ensuring the masses will be able to witness a film that The Telegraph desribed as "'Succession' crossed with 'Batman Forever' and a lava lamp." Lionsgate confirmed it plans to release the film theatrically on September 27, 2024, and that it will also oversee the film's distribution on home entertainment platforms.

This is quite the coup for Coppola,...

Blumhouse's New Reboot Can Redeem Francis Ford Coppola's 82% Box Office Flop 27 Years Later
Image
The Rainmaker TV show could redeem Coppola's overlooked classic, even if it flops, by driving viewers to the disregarded film. Quality of the reboot may hinge on the talent of the cast, with big shoes to fill following performances by Damon and DeVito. The reboot will stick closely to Grisham's novel and Coppola's film, promising to be a legal drama with thriller elements.

The upcoming television reboot of Francis Ford Coppola's The Rainmaker can redeem the film's poor box office performance from 1997. The Rainmaker is arguably one of Coppola's most overlooked films even though it received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 82%. The film stars Matt Damon just before he would go on to star in Good Will Hunting (1997) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). It also features performances from Danny DeVito, Claire Danes, Jon Voight, and Mickey Rourke.

The Rainmaker was Coppola's follow-up to 1996's Jack starring Robin Williams,...

Francis Ford Coppolas Most Underrated Movie Hits on All His Strengths
Image
It goes without saying that Francis Ford Coppola is one of the greatest filmmakers of all-time. His run of The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather: Part II, and Apocalypse Now was so successful that it ensured him a place in cinematic history forever, regardless of what he chose to do for the rest of his career. While Coppolas subsequent work was impressively no less ambitious, it was far less commercially successful, leading to significant gaps within his filmography. The critically derided 2011 film Twixt brought his career to an abrupt halt, but just before that, Coppola delivered one of his most personal films with the 2009 drama Tetro.

Fred Roos Dead at 89: Longtime Francis Ford Coppola Collaborator Was a Casting Director, Producer
Image
Fred Roos, the longtime producing and casting collaborator of Francis Ford Coppola, has died at age 89.

Roos famously found Jack Nicholson and Harrison Ford, launching both actors’ respective careers, and even helped cast Carrie Fisher alongside Ford in “Star Wars.” He is credited for also boosting the careers of Kirsten Dunst, Diane Keaton, Laurence Fishburne, Frederic Forest, Diane Lane, Nicolas Cage, Richard Dreyfuss, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Jennifer Connelly, Billy Bob Thorton, Marshall Bell, and more.

Roos later served as the casting director for Coppola’s “The Godfather,” leading auteur Coppola to deem Roos “one of the great casting talents in the last 40 years of American movies” in a 2004 interview with the Chicago Tribune.

Roos produced follow-up film “The Godfather: Part II,” “Apocalypse Now,” and Coppola’s recent “Megalopolis,” for which he also helped cast the star-studded ensemble. In 1974, both Roos and Coppola earned two Oscar...

Movie Poster of the Week | The Posters of Eiko Ishioka and Haruo Takino
Image
Above: 1980 Japanese poster for Apocalypse Now. Design by Eiko Ishioka, artwork by Haruo Takino. With Francis Ford Coppola’s long-gestated Megalopolis having premiered yesterday at Cannes, it's a good time to look back at the posters from his 60-year-long career. The only problem is that many posters for his films are either too well known or nothing to write home about. Like Coppola’s career itself, there are peaks and valleys—one of my very first posts for Notebook, almost exactly fifteen years ago, was about the gorgeous design for The Rain People (1969)—but a career retrospective of his posters seems like it might result in less than the sum of its parts. Yet of all his posters there are three rare Japanese designs that have always stood out as utterly extraordinary: two for Apocalypse Now (1979) and one for Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992).I’ve always seen these posters attributed to Eiko Ishioka,...

Francis Ford Coppola Slams Studio System After He Self-Financed ‘Megalopolis’: Execs ‘Don’t Make Good Movies … They Pay Their Debt Obligations’
Image
Francis Ford Coppola shared his thoughts on the current studio system during the Cannes Film Festival press conference for his self-financed epic “Megalopolis,” saying that they might not be around much longer.

“I fear that the film industry has become more of a matter of people being hired to meet their debt obligations because the studios are in great, great debt. And the job is not so much to make good movies, the job is to make sure they pay their debt obligations,” Coppola said in response to a question from Variety. “Obviously, new companies like Amazon and Apple and Microsoft, they have plenty of money, so it might be that the studios we knew for so long, some wonderful ones, are not to be here in the future anymore.”

The presser also veered into the political, with Coppola being asked if the film is a commentary on Donald Trump,...

"Megalopolis" trailer showcases visually stunning cinematography, blending sci-fi elements for an intriguing aesthetic. Shia Labeouf's mysterious role as Clodio Pulcher adds a layer of curiosity and Roman-inspired depth to the film. The film combines multiple genres, hinting at a convoluted yet all-encompassing production with major thematic implications.

Francis Ford Coppola's highly anticipated Megalopolis has an equally stunning and confusing teaser trailer. Adam Driver Sex Tape, Shia Labeouf in Drag and Dominatrix Aubrey Plaza Land Divisive ‘Megalopolis’ a 7-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes
Image
Is Francis Ford Coppola’s controversial magnum opus “Megalopolis” any good?

The two hour and 20 minute dystopian drama certainly divided the audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night with its collision course of shocking scenes: a doctored sex tape featuring Adam Driver, Shia Labeouf in drag playing a Trumpian figure and Aubrey Plaza dominating her way through a slew of men.

But there was still a huge amount of respect for iconic director Coppola, who received a four-minute standing ovation upon entering the room. After the credits rolled — which included a tribute to his late wife Eleanor — and the standing ovation began, Coppola hugged Driver and Giancarlo Esposito and got emotional as he made a speech dedicating the film to hope and family.

“Thank you all so much. It is so impossible to find words to tell you how I feel,” Coppola said, then introducing his family members in the audience.

Francis Ford Coppola Unveils Trailer from Self-Funded Sci-Fi Epic Megalopolis: Watch
Image
Francis Ford Coppola has revealed the first look at Megalopolis, his self-funded sci-fi epic starring Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.

A project decades in the making, Coppola financed much of the $120 million film himself. The film is set to premiere at Cannes in May, but has yet to secure a US release.

Megalopolis is described as “a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, whose love...

Megalopolis Continues Francis Ford Coppola’s Wild Late Career Big Swings
Image
When most cinephiles think of Francis Ford Coppola, they think of his miracle run in the 1970s. During that decade, he directed four films, all of them five-star masterpieces: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather, Part II, and Apocalypse Now. Or they think of embarrassments from his for-hire period, including the Robin Williams weepy Jack. Yet those five films hardly encapsulate the entire career of Francis Ford Coppola, which will likely end with the upcoming Megalopolis. Instead the best indication of Coppola as an artist and filmmaker might be found in the most recent movies he’s made, with Coppola having released three self-produced and self-financed pictures every two years between 2007 and 2011: Youth Without Youth, Twixt, and Tetro.

Although they vary in quality, and none top his work from the ’70s, this independent trio captures the experimental and romantic heart that lies at the center of Coppola’s overall oeuvre.

Francis Ford Coppola Returns To Realize His Dream Project With The Megalopolis Trailer
Image
Are you ready for the return of the king? It's been 13 years since Francis Ford Coppola helmed a feature film — that would be 2011's weird horror flick "Twixt" — and now he's back in the director's chair to realize his dream project. In the 1980s, Coppola started writing "Megalopolis," an epic, sprawling drama that could very well be his biggest movie ever. He would tinker with the work over the years and finally start shooting second unit footage in 2001.

And then disaster struck, literally. The film's script dealt with the aftermath of a disaster that befalls New York City, and just as Coppola was gearing up to get "Megalopolis" off the ground, the 9/11 attacks changed everything. Realizing that no one at the time would be in the mood to watch a post-disaster movie set in New York, Coppola shelved the project — but he never forgot about it.

Now, the seemingly impossible...
