Solid Political Drama

I have to admit that I wasn't planning on watching The Diplomat but after hearing so many great things about it and reading all the great reviews I thought I'd give it a chance. I'm so glad that I did because it was great. I'm actually surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I was hooked from the very first episode. Even though Keri Russell was great in The Americans I thought it was more about the writing than her acting so I wasn't really sure her and Rufus Sewell could carry a series as leads but they absolutely do, they both are fantastic here. The chemistry between those two is what makes this show so good. I could definitely see this series winning some awards.

Looking forward to next season

The Diplomat has everything you want in a great series...it has comedy, drama, great acting and writing, etc, etc. The series is about a diplomat (Keri Russell) who has a new job as an ambassador to the United Kingdom after an international crisis happens when an aircraft carrier is attacked. She also has do deal with her husband (Rufus Sewell) who's already a political star and their rocky marriage. I liked this show so much I binged the entire eight episodes over the course of one weekend. It's been doing so good and it's been so well received that it's already gotten an early renewal for another season. I'll definitely be looking forward to watching that and seeing where this show goes.

Can we have more series like this, please?

You know those TV series where "the first episodes are a bit slow, but by the end of the second season you're hooked"? Well, The Diplomat is the other kind.

It starts with a bang (literally!) and we're quickly introduced to the Wylers; the rest of the cast follows suit, in a barrage of quick, witty dialogue, instead of wasting an episode to "introduce the characters".

There's good chemistry between Russell and Sewell; their husband and wife banter is well written. Every character is believable even if not necessarily likeable, and the plot is quick paced.

I know this is not real-life diplomacy, much like the 007 movies aren't documentaries: this series is entertainment, and I highly recommend it as such.

This is why you exist, Netflix

Keri Russell's performance here is nothing short of a revelation. Her characterization of American career diplomat Kate Wyler is a mesmerizing mash-up of strength, humor, intelligence, vulnerability and, oh my, sexiness. "The Diplomat" deftly caricatures the realm of international diplomacy and its denizens. And while the world hasn't yet descended to the chicanery of the storyline's plot, the wonderfully talented, diverse cast makes it easy to believe that most governments are overrun by people who never emotionally escaped middle school. This series looks good, sounds good, feels good -- it is sublimely fun and smart adult entertainment. All Netflix needs to do now is announce Season 2, and let Ms. Russell and company continue to work their magic.

Addicting & promising binge watch

The characters are phenomenally written and all of them are an enigma to some degree. Their dialogue is fast paced and engaging, and the storyline keeps evolving in chaotic political directions.

It doesn't have a strong tone like other similar shows do. I want to compare it slightly to House of Cards but that doesn't fit the bill. It has a hint of Succession but again not a true fit. It felt similar to the Night Agent but wayyyy better.

I see reviews complaining about the lead and her disheveled appearance and abrasive behavior, but that's her hole thing! "You want people in power who don't *want* to be in power".

Kate is focused on the mission and cause at hand, where people's lives are hanging in the balance. What she's wearing, how she looks, and even when she sleeps all come second to the primary mission. She's good at her job so no one dwells about her decorum. I thought her style fit the narrative perfectly, and it was a refreshing change of pace.

The best part of the show is the relationships they all have with one another. It's rare I like all of the characters in a show but this one did it for me. Really hopeful we'll see a s2.

Please 🙏 🙏 do another season!!

This was so good I binged all 8 eps and started screaming in frustration at the tv when the last one ended. I would have happily sat and watched another 8 eps.

One of those rare gems where every character in the quality ensemble cast has a well-developed personality, where every plot twist, even the most complex, can be followed.

This is original, clever and really, really well made.

~~~~ Thats all I want to say but apparently I have to write 600 characters, which seems like a lot at this late time of night, especially after 8 hours solid of wonderful television when I really want to go and get some sleep.
Well, what a treat!
I binge watched The Night Agent, thought it couldn't get much better than that, I was wrong. I loved every second of this series. So cerebral and fascinating. Everything you could wish for in a series. The characters and acting were first class. It was so great to see the delicious Rufus Sewell again, and what a part he played, never knowing what he will get up to next. Keri Russell was just magnificent as the ambassador. Played it to perfection. I also loved David Gyasi. All in all a wonderful series, a little short maybe, but well worth watching. The best political show since The West Wing. Excellent!
S1 and S2 10 GOLD stars
Oh my goodness! Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger with of gigantic proportions. Season 2 had me almost in a heart attack in the closing few minutes of Season 2.
I do not know if my heart can take a Season 3.
I initially thought this was a lo key, slow burn political drama. Maybe another kind of *feel good* tv drama like Madame Secretary.
Boy, was I wrong. The Diplomat will have you on the edge of your seat each episode. Binge watching them like a starved animal.
This is political theatre at its very finest. It's even more cut throat than my wildest dreams.
And, even if it's only 1 tenth true of what REALLY happens in USA politics and the various agencies (CIA, Secret Service, Diplomacy) it is still a wild ride.
Keri Russell is once again in a strong female protagonist role that reminded me why I loved her performance so much in "The Americans" She is outstanding!
I can't wait for the second season
I just watched the 8th episode. The whole series was amazing. There was never a dull moment in it. It has intelligence, action, drama, good acting, human relationship complexity, fun,... It checked a lot of my boxes for a joyful series.
Characters are developed very nice and I am at the edge of my seat to see what happens to them.
The series ended on a huge cliff hanger and I am usually very mad that happens, but this one, I am just wishing for the next season. I really hope Netflix doesn't kill it like many other.
Plus, as an Iranian it was very interesting that some of the policies were about Iran.
Netflix, please, please, please bring the second season back early.
Extraordinary and Intelligent.
As hard to believe as it might seem, this series is also 'fresh'. It is truly original - it hasn't been done before. Midway through the first episode, something else of significance occurs, and somehow the makers of this drama managed to convince the people who make the trailers not to include it - or even allude to it. I am only midway through the second episode, but I can already tell you that this is not similar to other shows or books in the spy/suspense genre. It is also somewhat refreshing, because it isn't dominated by the sort of paranoia that bedevils Australians and others. The writing is deft; plot and dialogue flow together seamlessly. The acting is very, very credible.
Agreement with Season 3 Haters
The Diplomat started out as a fast- paced, well-acted and well written political drama. By season 3 it devolves into relationship melodrama that can be found on any other Series. It starts as unique and crumbles to the commonplace.
The show loses respect for its audience. In the genre of "teens in haunted house". There is often a scene where the annoying cheerleader and the arrogant jock have split from the larger group. Even though they have seen several of their friends murdered by the haunting creature, they decide to have sex giving the entity the opportunity to kill them both in one fell swoop. In The Diplomat, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, the characters decide to have sex in a way that might have substantial diplomatic consequences. We don't care. Genre films don't care about the intelligence of their audience. This show was supposed to.
Kate becomes extremely shrewish and unlikable, and unforgivably incompetent. Her "I'm SO sorry..." becomes extremely trite. An emphasized "SO" doesn't make you more sorry than a plain "I'm sorry".
In my experience, also, powerful people usually aren't self-reflecting. They just are. Others try to explain them. We don't need exposition. We can form our own opinions about their motivations.
So, if this show had maintained consistency, it would have been a 9. Season 3 merits a 3 point deduction.
FINALLY - Quality on Netflix
Finally, after embarrassing shows like Treason and The Night Agent, Netflix gets it right.
Beautifully filmed, absolutely perfect acting, intelligent, REALISTIC, and engaging. The script is incredibly well done, it's smooth and SMART. It's a real TV show. FINALLY. If you like empty, glitzy and shallow Hollywood "fluff", this isn't for you. This is a show that prides itself on intelligent dialogue and thought provoking scenarios and experiences. Watch annoying nonsense like Marvell TV shows with stupid explosions and mindless characters? Go right ahead. Leave great shows for the rest of us.
Watch it!
They should've stopped at S2
I can say that I truly enjoyed watching the S1 and S2, almost binged it all. There was a certain amount of chemistry between characters with a good story behind it. It is unfortunate that they turn season three to a teenage drama or Turkish like soap opera. I like to finish what I started, but it became a struggle with every episode almost from the episode one. So, I would say that the first to seasons deserved an eighth, but the last one is one or two stars. Horrible!
Why?
After such an interesting first season, I wonder why turn this series into a telenovelas about high level infidelity and jealousy.
What a waste.
I really wonder why it made sense to write such a boring and poorly imagined season two. I doubt that any series ever managed to destroy a brilliant first season with such a horrible second one.
Refreshing and Funny
There's a moment, I think it was about mid-way through Season 1 of the series, that one of the sub-plots went slightly in a different direction than I had expected, and it was a good thing.
Otherwise, the dysfunctional relationships - both personal and professional - among the major characters somehow works and I like it. The writers did a good job of keeping the action tightly focused.
Both the characters and plots work. Sure, it's not very believable but it's fun and at times tense. "Madam Secretary" this is not; nor is it "Veep". And that's a very good thing.
I should also mention that the acting and dialogues are also quite good. The casting was well done. Are they believable? Again, no. But that's ok. Very fast I understood that this is a fantasy, not reality.
Netflix did a good job on this one. I'm really looking forward to Season 2. Please don't f--- it up.
Highly entertaining mix of diplomacy, personal strife and occasional action
I'm sure anyone with the slightest knowledge of the inner workings of an ambassador's role will find this far fetched, but the characters are interesting, the dialogue is sharp and the plot is propulsive.
Season one sets up the characters and the situation, season two raises the stakes even higher and leaves us on a cliffhanger revelation that begs for a season 3.
One minor quibble for season 2 is the choice of actor to play the Scottish first minister.. Someone who could pull of the accent would have been a better choice . They might also have been able to point out that fire in Scots, much like in the US has two syllables ( fye ur) rendering the witty exchange on the subject rather flat ..
Tremendous acting. Fun storyline.
Absolutely top tier production and acting throughout. The screenplay is clever and interesting, engaging and well-paced. Character development is pretty robust, and the players aren't simple caricatures. Again and again a character at first appears to be one-dimensional, but then the story develops and they actually are much more complex than the first blush.
My only complaint is that some of the injected "romance" storylines are so ham-fisted and out of place they are disjointed and jarring. Professional situations that suddenly devolve into "I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy" seemingly out of nowhere. Someone decided to soap opera the show up a bit and it does not improve the result.
Looking forward to Season 2
What I was expecting was not realized. I thought it would be a total drama much like The Americans with Keri Russell, which I thoroughly enjoyed. But instead it was not only a drama but was rich in humor as well. Keri Russell was magnificent in playing an Ambassador who is unfiltered when the position often requires constrain and filters. Her staff is constantly having to adapt to her. Rufus Sewell, her husband in the series, provides a balance but likewise provides moments of brilliant humor. The remaining cast including David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, Ato Essando and others are exceptional. The only thing wrong with this series it was only 8 episodes. So, I am so looking forward to Season 2.
Fantastic show!
I love this show for the characters, the dialogue, the story, and the relationships. It's a bit over the top at times, but that's what makes it so fun. It takes itself seriously, but not too seriously. The relationships between the characters are very non-traditional and I enjoy almost every character in their own way. I've read some harsh reviews about this show and they just seem completely unfounded to me. My only advice would be to watch the show. If you don't like it, you'll probably know soon enough that it's not for you. If you are like me, this is one of those shows that you'd be very sorry for missing out on.
Running the gov or high school?
I don't know if I'm remembering wrong, but as far as I remember, the earlier seasons were more focused on political events than personal relationships. Yes, there was a lot about personal relationships then too, but not the main part of the series. Now you'd think the characters were in high school considering how childish their relationship problems are. I found myself "zoning out" several times and being on the phone instead of following the plot, that's how boring it is with all these relationship problems and jealousy drama.
it is so damn good
Wow. Clever, funny, brutal, desperate and so real.
This is a great show and I think is the best modern portrayal of modern politics at the highest level. So many politics-involved shows feel so phony, but not this one.
It also is a show, that like politics, never stands still. Just when you think you can anticipate what can happen in the world stage or in a character's personal life, all changes and you are back to square one of a conflict.
Relationships can be trite or predictable, but the Diplomat and her hub are also so interesting and complex. The major reason may be the excellent dialog and the avoidance of trite situations. These are career-committed people thrust to the forefront of major international issues but still have both affection but also anger or frustration with each other.
Again, the biggest compliment is that it feels so real.
Season 3
I was an absolute fan of the first two seasons. I restarted my Netflix account specifically for season three. The first episode was strong but the rest weren't. Why shows think it's a good idea to introduce new characters that we know nothing about and could care less to find out more, baffles me. Even worse these characters take favourites to "who are you" status and why do I so dislike you now? Keri Russel's Ambassador was crazy smart, endearing, quirkily charming to what is now an unlikable beeotch. This show was a solid 8 to a six. The last episode for a flickering second has the feel of bygone seasons one and two just to pull the rug out from under you roll credits.
Disappointing.
Two seasons of greatness ruined in 3rd!
I really liked the first 2 seasons. What worked for theese two seasons, imho, was Kate was a 'Good Wife' and brilliant and her marriage resembled real marriage. Season 3 episode 1 started good, but increasingly Kate became more and more unlikeable, not a 'good wife' anymore, cheats on husband, became more and more selfish. I think the writers understood this, so they put a couple of 'crying under the desk' scenes, to garner sympathy.
Each episode became harder to watch, with more known characters behaving over-the-top and unlikeable and new characters introduced that we could care much for. I hope this is the last season.
