As a self-proclaimed sci-fi junkie, I was ecstatic with the start of this movie. The tone is dark and unnerving. It's visually mesmerizing, filled with beautiful sci-fi imagery, even trippy at times. The sci-fi elements are creative and unique. And it has some great music.
All of those positives stay true through the end of the movie. Everything is set up for success. Except... the story is useless, the acting ranges from mediocre to terrible, the dialogue is as basic as it gets. That's how you take a great setup and result in a completely forgettable movie.
I always love SEEING Eiza Gonzalez, but it does not seem like she is lead role material. This movie is not terrible and has a lot of good, it just doesn't come together anywhere near the way it should.

Why is this movie edited so poorly...lts Iike we see the same scene in 4 different ways....they have multiple flash backs for all the same scenes, and by the fourth flashback, you already knew what was going on...this have amazing visuals, and amazing fx, but it just didn't do anything for me...MANDY is a much better film that has depth and visuals to make you invested...this movie just didn't push the needle and by the end, i was bored...the Iast 5 minutes were awesome, everything else besides the visuals were mediocre sadly...Shudder is usually hit or miss so I wasn't shocked to see their name on the opening credits...i went in blind, and left bored.

Went in without having seen a trailer and only having read a brief synopsis, left confused and disappointed. The film is a jumbled aggregations of themes and concepts that have played out in other prominent sci fi films dating back to 2001: Space Odyssey and there are scenes that are straight ripped from others (looking at robot assisted medical procedures). Aside from some trippy fractal visuals that are never really explained, the sets are basic, special effects pretty minimal, and acting pretty bad across the board. The main character Raya is hot, so there is that. Twists and turns at the end kind of clue one onto what's going on, but it's clunky.
As my viewing mate said to me about ten minutes in "This is a very B movie".

The production value is high, the actors are solid, the sets are fine. But this is has got to be the most overused clichéd script I have ever seen.
The scifi elements are just enough to create a coherent plot and unify all the elements. But it is incredibly boring slog fest, which they have tried to make more intelligent by the most overused trope of the main character losing their memory.
I think this is the wave of AI generated scripts. This simply has no value, there are so many better movies who have almost the identical plot.
It only requires two movie they stole from, and I cant really call it influenced. I have no idea how something can simply rip off the idea from "The thing", mix it with a bit of "Alien" to pad out the scenes, and actually manage to get it made.
These are two of the most most influential movies in the genre, didn't someone notice how it was such as blatent and poor ripoff.

Otherwise, the movie is tension free and not enough of a plot for a feature. I was looking forward to this based on the mysterious description. After watching it, the movie is an extremely basic sci fi action thriller with robotic horror thriller events that don't work. It's formatted with a plot device that delays the inevitable reveal while establishing atmosphere without any dialogue for large portions of the film.
As such, I found the film relaxing and the script had the quality of a wandering mind. No, I don't think the explanation makes up for it and it feels inappropriate for the film.

It is indeed visually alluring, and I admire their passionate experimentations with the colour palette. Not the visual effects, though, I mean the CGI, as they certainly came off cheap and underdeveloped in some places.
However, if we keep all these flashy technicalities on one side and start judging the movie from a cinematic standpoint, shortcomings begin to emerge to the surface.
First and foremost, there is limited time allotted to explore the 'reason' behind the mysterious circumstances on the ship. Although there are a couple of scenes to depict the 'otherworldly' beings, they fail to meet the inherent necessities of the script.
Secondly, the majority of the characters are merely used as fillers, with Eisa and Aaron shouldering the burden for the most part.
And could someone please tell me why and how they managed to convince Iko Uwais to play such a trivial character?
Was it just to indulge him in a hand-to-hand fight scene that lasted for like two minutes?
Criminal!

Solid 6.5 to be honest.
The story arc had great potential but it was not executed as well as it could have been. Some scenes just seemed out of place and made no sense, the alien reveal was not impressive nor was it presented well. The editing was not great with too many quick cuts that took away from the scene. I'm trying not to give anything away in spoilers, but I do disagree with another review that the acting was not as bad as they stated it was. I think for what she was going through that Eiza's performance was fine in representing the character's situation and journey.
All in all it was just not what I was hoping for. Not enough sci-fi and the horror was not all that horrific.

Here we have a great cast, great aesthetics and atmosphere, fascinating sound design and musical motifs, which all lead to disappointment due to the movie story following the same meme of what space horror has to be for the last 50 years.
ASH is the umpteenth example of a script and plot that portrays astronauts - which are supposed to be the best and brightest, and most elite cross-trained scientists the Earth has to offer - making novice decisions and behaving like goons.
Overall it's trippy, and visually gorgeous. I particularly loved all of the sound effects, klaxons, and station computer voice, etc. The kind of stuff you would want to watch a FlyLo movie for. But damn, what a dumb script. The biggest dumby and villain out of them all somehow lives at the end. That's the true horror of it all; idiots win. Or something.
I wish they would have used the great backdrop, settings, and overall atmosphere to to do some serious world building and really spend some time there, exploring it all. There was some deeper, big picture ideas and emotions but sadly were just touched upon. There is a cool sequence of communication with an intelligence which I actually like. I just wish there was more of it.
Can we please get more movies and shows where the scientists are rationale and observe and investigate the things around them? They spend more time on the technicalities and science? More Hard Science Fiction please. Hard as in the "hard facts," or true to the best of our current real world knowledge and speculation therefrom. Can we spend a little more time in these worlds in general? Maybe ask and answer a few more questions and eschew the flashback replays which fill up the runtime. Give us more space and time with the big set pieces instead. Spend more time with the evil on the screen, too. Rarely do we get that.
The most basic script beneath such amazing production values.
"Oh this again, ugh."

Aaron Paul's salary must have been half the budget of this cheesy looking, poorly acted, musically annoying ripoff of the Alien movies.
I was truly misled by the reviews I read. Rotten Tomatoes critics gave this a 75. Had I not gone to the movie theater, but instead watched it at home, I would have turned it off ten minutes into it. The couple sitting next to me, walked out after twenty minutes. They were smart. I had to persevere and see if things would turn around. They didn't. One saving grace was the short run time of 97 minutes. At one point I snuck a peek at my cellphone to find out how much longer the movie would be. I repeatedly glanced at my watch to see how much time how passed since the last time I looked.
Save yourself a miserable 97 minutes and stay home. If it shows up on pay for view, take my word, this is boring and not worth your time.

Ash (2025) Directed By. Flying Lotus -
Is an incredible and visceral experience through space and cosmic horrors that lie beyond.
Everything from the neon visuals, synth-wave music and story is so well made, that it's hard to imagine this film was made on a $500,000 budget. This film is a combination of Nicholas Winding Refn - Drive (2011) etc. , The Thing (1982) and Alien (1979)... what's there not to love?
The actors carry the film seamlessly, the story is predictable, but it has such a unique flavor on its own, it's hard not to appreciate the hard work that went into this film!
This is definitely going to be a cult classic and midnight movie for the ages in the coming years. Underrated masterpiece! Watch this thing on the biggest screen possible with the soundtrack pulsing, and you won't regret it.
9/10.

Ash is a space science fiction horror film clearly inspired by the terror experienced by Ellen Ripley in Alien and Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus. The protagonist of Ash, however, also bears a striking resemblance to Lara Croft from Tomb Raider or Selene from Underworld, depending on the scene. I assume this was intentional, as the director likely wanted to create a sense of familiarity with the main character for the target audience. I have to say-it probably worked. I couldn't help but enjoy making those comparisons and spotting similarities throughout the movie.
The story itself isn't particularly original: the main character wakes up covered in blood and with no memory, quickly realizing that something terrible has happened. All she recalls are brief flashes of past events. Soon, another character appears and offers help-but can you really trust someone you don't even remember? As her memory slowly returns, it becomes clear that the truth is far from what she expected, turning the situation into a fight for survival.
And for fans of space sci-fi with a soft spot for extraterrestrial lifeforms, there's a little bonus in store. So, was it worth watching? I think it was.

If you like Sci-Fi, avoid this at any cost. No redeeming qualities whatsoever- very low budget, nonsensical plot, bad acting and story we've seen thousands time before without a drop of originality. Decorations and special effects look like made in 70s. Horror consist of pulsing flashbacks and half-second disturbing images. Main actress wonders around the whole movie trying to remember things and would be perfect metaphor for a viewer stumbling to understand what is going on. You can see the ending a mile away. Very generous 1/10 ( 1 for Aaron Paul cameo) from me, don't waste you time on watching this.

Is an interesting idea, some cool concepts, stunning imagery, lot of great pratical effects and stunts, but it just drags on.
Elza Gonzales and Aron Paul are great actors, but they have no chemistry or charisma in this, specially to drag a whole movie, and the dialogues doesn't help at all, Iko Uwais is straight up wasted. It just feels like they got this concept for a short or something, and some executives made then stretch it into a movie... So this is what we got, but hey, at least they did the right thing about the expositions, which is to show stuff, instead of telling through narration.

This movie is a very low budget knock off of movies past including but not limited to; Life, The Thing, Prometheus etc. Save your money & stream any one of those films instead of wasting your time with this one. No redeeming qualities. Screenplay = 0. Dialogue = 0. Visual effects = 0. Acting = 0. Total waste of time / energy / money. The actors should have been paid more NOT to do this film. There are so many better examples of Sci-fi horror that it's not even worth mentioning this film. It should've ended 30 minutes earlier than its actual run time. If this is what we as movie goers deserve post writers strike then the writers should've stayed on the picket lines.

Ash (2025) starring Eiza Gonzales and Aaron Paul, is a low budget horror / sci-fi film directed by Flying Lotus. In his debut directoral effort, Flying Lotus delivers a film that is as innovative as a mouldy bologna sandwich. Everything you see here has already been done better, with a much larger budget and crew. I was shocked at the quality of the film, which hearkens back to cheap, Saturday afternoon, B- movie television fare.
If you're looking for film school quality - as in Cinematography 101 - the movie easily hits its mark. There is something very polished about the delivery if you're not expecting professional results. If you're expecting a great, thematically developed, theater-ready and technically excellent feature movie, you're in for a disappointment.
The actors don't have much to do in this film, other than deliver the basics of happiness, anger, confusion and rage. There was likely a bit of time in the makeup chair to create a semblance of Body-horror - but the layers here aren't deep at all.
Post production actually does a passable job with trippy, acid-inspired flashbacks and special effects. The color palette is very Nicolas Winding Refin-inspired. If you need an out-of-body experience, a matinee of Ash might serve you well.
Though I could not enjoy this film, I am definitely interested to see the next project Flying Lotus undertakes - the creative potential is there, once you trundle past the tired, overused tropes, and I saw a fair number of fans in my theater's audience.
If you're looking for blockbuster, transcendental acting, directing and cinematography, skip this movie. If you enjoy tropes exploding from the screen in sloppy, gory, messy and predictable fashion, you may enjoy Ash. I, unfortunately, did not.
5 out of 10 stars.

Although I enjoyed the movie, it wasn't great.
As a Sci-Fi junky in my 50's I see a lot of previously told stories all wrapped into one. For me it was predictable and loved the nod to 'The Thing', crematorium in 'The Chronicles of Riddick', 'Pandorum', 'Life' and other older movies, but this story has been done to death.
Still, for a new generation of Sc-Fi fans it could be 'ground-breaking' and expand a few minds.
All in all I couldn't give it more than 6 stars. A bigger budget, and better actors, could have pushed it up. I still liked and appreciated it, and it's definatly worth a viewing.

Plot
A woman wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events.
Cast
Aaron "I don't get the appeal" Paul, the stunning Eiza González and a few other faces that you'll likely struggle to name but you'll know that from something.
Verdict
I went in blind, I'd never heard of Ash and that says a lot about its marketing. Within moments I thought to myself, this is going to be good. It had an Event Horizon vs Dead Space theme and I was excited for what was to come. I really set myself up for that fall didn't I?!
Ash has a tried and tested concept yet dangles originality in front of you only to rip it from your grasp throughout its run time. There's nothing new here, and even if there was it's all so dark you'd likely not appreciate it anyway.
So the plot is nonsensical, Paul is weak as usual, the splatter effects that are also teased are heartbreakingly lacking and the whole thing feels very much like a "What could have been".
I had high hopes, they were squandered. It's not that it's a bad film, it's the fact that it's a bad film that should have been good.
Rants
This has wet my appetite for a live action Dead Space movie. Can you imagine it? The very idea has me salivating. If handled by a competent writer, and the special effects done by people who could do it justice that could be a masterpiece. Will we get it? Yeah sure, around the same time as we get Dead Space 4.
The Good
In places it looks the part Eiza González A couple of decent ideas
The Bad
Too dark and with cheap lighting effects Everything feels like it should have been done better Aaron Paul Very ugly in places.

I watched an advanced screening of the sci-fi/horror film Ash (2025) in theaters this evening. The story follows a woman who wakes up with amnesia aboard a spaceship, only to discover that all her colleagues are dead. She encounters another survivor who is just as confused and desperate to escape. As they try to make sense of what happened, she begins to suspect that she might be responsible...
Directed by Flying Lotus (Kuso), the film stars Eiza González (Baby Driver), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Iko Uwais (The Raid 1 & 2), Kate Elliott (Deathgasm), and Beulah Koale (Thank You for Your Service).
The film has strong The Thing and Pitch Black vibes, with an atmosphere that feels immersive thanks to its authentic sets, costumes, props, and backdrops. The acting is excellent, and the horror elements are top-tier, featuring grotesque corpses, brutal kill scenes, and some creative use of scissors and fire. Speaking of fire, this film has some of the best CGI flames I've ever seen-a rare feat. The last 20-25 minutes are a perfect 10/10; I could watch an entire film based on the final flashback sequence and showdown alone. The intensity in those scenes, along with the film's conclusion, is elite.
In the end, Ash is a solid addition to the sci-fi/horror genre and worth a watch for fans. I'd give it a 7/10.

ASH is a sci-fi horror directed by Flying Lotus. It stars Eiza González and Aaron Paul and was written by Jonni Remmler. It tells the story of Riya, who wakes up find that the crew of her space station has been killed. She doesn't know what has happened or who she is, but has quick flashes of nightmarish memories as time progresses. When another crew member shows up to offer help, Riya isn't sure she can trust him. The movie is a mash-up of mystery, sci-fi, and horror, and some parts are executed well while others fall short of hitting the mark. It is also in many ways symbolic representation of battling one's own demons, and there are multiple times where lighting and other scene events leave clues as to what is going on. A re-watch might reveal even more instances of such clues. ASH is not a sequel or a remake, so I do give this movie props for trying to be something original (though clearly influenced by superior films that came before it such as The Thing and Alien). Unfortunately, the writer and director have trouble fully sticking the landing with the execution and the story as a whole, and I left the theater feeling a bit disappointed that I couldn't enjoy this one more. Quick Take movie review on my YouTube channel.

Despite the low ratings, I can only say the truth, which is that I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. The story is such that it keeps you wondering what is really going on, and it never gets boring. Maybe we have seen similar stories before, but it is not fair to call it predictable in any way. On top of that, the synth-wave music and sound effects are awesome. Maybe the script is cheesy sounding, but I honestly cannot say since I'm a non-native English speaker. Anyway, I still think anyone with interest in sci-fi can enjoy this movie after a glass of wine or two. Don't have too high expectations and go along for the ride.

Ash is a beautiful film with a unique plot, set in an alien world in the future. The film starts out with the main character in trouble and searching for answers throughout. It is set on a mysterious alien planet which has secrets to be revealed. The film has very beautiful scenes and imagery that sucks the viewer in. The characters don't have much character development or back stories and the dialog isn't extraordinarily captivating. It does have some dark humor provided by a medical robot. It has a twist ending, which honestly isn't mind blowing, but it is interesting nonetheless. I will need to rewatch it many times.

1/10 (and that's being too kind)
If you value your time, your brain cells, or even just basic storytelling... avoid this cinematic disaster at all costs. Ash isn't just bad - it's offensively bad. It's the kind of film that makes you question how it ever got funded, how actual professionals attached their names to it, and why it wasn't left to rot on a dusty hard drive somewhere.
Let's start with the "plot," if you can even call it that. It's a meandering, incoherent mess strung together by endless recycled tropes, nonsensical flashbacks, and a lead character wandering around like she's as confused as the audience - and maybe she is. The movie tries so hard to be mysterious and deep, but it just ends up being boring and empty. There is no tension, no momentum, no emotional pull - just noise, flash, and existential sci-fi babble that thinks it's smarter than it is.
The acting? Wooden. The direction? Amateur. The editing? Feels like it was done on shuffle mode. You see the same scene four different ways like some kind of film school experiment gone wrong. By the time the movie gives you its big "reveal," you've already figured it out - three rewinds ago. And don't even get me started on the "horror" aspect: it's a mix of flashing lights and jarring cuts, like a cheap TikTok glitch filter pretending to be psychological terror.
The special effects? Discount Mandy on a 2005 YouTube budget. The production design looks like a cosplay convention crashed into a thrift store. It's like Event Horizon and Under the Skin had a love child and dropped it on its head.
Aaron Paul's cameo is the only reason this isn't getting a zero. But even he looks like he's just collecting a check and counting the minutes until he can leave the set.
If this was meant to be Flying Lotus' big visionary debut, it's a crash landing with no survivors. This isn't "artsy sci-fi." It's Tr-Ash.
Final Verdict: "Ash" is a pretentious, hollow, slow-burn that never lights a flame. Watch paint dry instead - it has better pacing and character development.
