Promising Premise, Messy and Disappointing Execution

The successful American writer and atheist Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs) participates in a support group to accept the death of his beloved wife Sarah (Salomé Jiménez) and their son Diogo. Joe befriends Sadie (Wendy Glenn) in one of the meetings and she helps him when he has a car accident.

When Joe's estranged religious brother Samuel Crone (Michael Landes) tells him that their father is terminal, he travels to Barcelona to stay near the death bed of his father. Joe has visions of demons and with the number 11 and he finds that something evil will happen with Samuel and him on 11 November 2011.

"11-11-11" is a film with a promising premise, but with a messy and disappointing execution. The screenplay is boring and confused; the scary atmosphere with demons repeats several times along the film and becomes irritating; and the predicable plot point is hard to believe, disclosed in very fast pace and annoying. My vote is three.

This is NOT a doomsday film!

You may or may not have bought into the false advertising campaign that is targeting young horror fans who think that they are going to see some apocalyptic event that occurs on the 11-11-11. If you are part of this target group, I am telling you now that you will most certainly be disappointed. This film is a slow-paced, methodical character-driven piece about the conflict between faith-based ideologies. Don't be tricked into thinking that this is going to be some exciting or thrilling popcorn adventure in the same vein as some of the other high budget apocalyptic films out there. Director Darren Lynn Bousman has himself said that he wanted to explore his own spiritual beliefs and conceptions about existence through this film.

We begin by following Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs), a popular novelist who is tormented by the death of his family through constant reoccurring nightmares and hallucinations. As seemingly random events begin to unfold in his life, Joseph struggles to cling onto any real purpose of his continuing existence. As he rapidly descends into a state of self-seclusion, he discovers a pattern in which all the events in his life are taking place. They appear to always happen at the set time of 11:11 am/pm. When his estranged pastor brother Samuel (Michael Landes) rings to tell him about his dying father, Joseph immediately travels to Barcelona. Here is where the story will perhaps turn south for most people. We spend a good 40 minutes of the film trying to decipher strange supernatural clues as we are subjected to long-winded seemingly pointless dialogue scenes. For some this may be incredibly boring, especially since the fact that apart from a few jump-scares and men in goblinesque costumes, the film is basically devoid of any horror or suspense. As the day of 11-11-11 approaches, events get weirder and weirder until the finale where a huge revealing twist is attempted but comes off looking incredibly schlocky.

Overall I'm pretty sure this film will flop badly. Due to its misleading nature, I feel that many people are going to rightfully flame this film in general. In my opinion it would have served better as a psychological drama about the descent of a rational man into madness. The twist would have been Joseph's self-realization that 11-11-11 has no meaning and it is just another number. Unfortunately the film favors a more unrealistic and perplexing ending that wasn't needed. There are however some redeemable qualities to the film such as the philosophical themes surrounding religion vs. society and also the talent of Timothy Gibbs to carry the film until the end despite many major flaws. I recommend that you watch this when it comes out on DVD so you can make up your own mind but I suggest that you consider the limitations of the budget (which couldn't have been more than $2 million).

Poorly researched concept, could have been better

11:11 seems to be a real phenomenon, but this movie has no correlation to those beliefs or possibilities. In that sense, it was poorly researched. I Think the idea is good, but here it was almost thrown together and poorly thought-out. The movie seems jumpy and quite random, the characters have no depth, and scenes lack flow. With bad make-up/costume design, low budget special effects, and sometimes pointless dialogue, I was almost distracted from the story. There was enough monotone content, with a few attempts to startle the audience, to keep me until the fairly predictable end. I really wouldn't recommend this to anybody... maybe a study on "How we could have made this movie better" for film students.

no offense, but this movie is garbage.

the plot is just atrocious. the ending is ridiculous. the acting is terrible. the special effects are far from special. the theme is unoriginal. about the only enjoyable aspect of this "film" - i'd not call it that, but rather a "cinematic suppository" - would be the soundtrack. save yourself. save your money. save 2 hours of your life that you will never get back if you were to suffer through this travesty.

the saddest part about this movie is the fact that it will make more money than most of us make in our entire lifetimes.

oh and just to add perhaps some weight to my statements, i graduated film school. i spent months studying screenplays and the screen writing process. i went through years of work to attain my degree. you can take my opinion, or you can see for yourself.

i hope for the former. i'd rather you be spared the suffering that is this filth.

Big disappointment

Personally, being obsessed to the whole repetitive numbers made me very excited about this movie. I was really waiting for it to be released! And that's probably why it was a big disappointment for me. The idea of the repetitive numbers was a new unexplored theme and unfortunately it got spoiled with this movie. Very weak acting with obvious predictable flow of the story, combined with cheap visual effects and make up, all built for the failure of this movie. Not to mansion the off topic ending which was a hopeless trial to give a lasting final impression. Seriously the whole religion thing in those movies is a pathetic try from their writers to utilize people's passions towards their beliefs to make free advertisement for the movies! P.S. the only reason I gave the movie 2 stars out of 10 is for it's title nothing more nothing less.

Weak, lame, and uninspired

This movie was just TERRIBLE. I got an advanced copy and what a complete waste of time. This was solely a gimmick for 11/11/11. The people who wrote this were just looking for a way to make money on a movie and what they came up with was the weakest plot somehow tied to religion and a number.

But guess what, the number has nothing to do with this movie. They could have easily made this movie without all of the number references. They also could have easily made this movie better without such a loose plot, however it was extremely hard to follow or figure what was going on.

Then they finally tell you what is going on like you are a child, flashing back to scenes that you just saw and don't need to be retold. Overall, this movie didn't even give the satisfaction of even coming off as a scary movie, like it advertises.

The scares were weak and overplayed. The best part was maybe the crazy old man, but that is even stretching it for me. Just say no, I wish I did.

11-11-11

American writer and atheist, Joseph Crone, receives word from his estranged brother, that his father is dying. He travels to Spain to see his father on his death bed, where he discovers that his younger brother has followed his fathers calling and become a catholic Pastor. Together they have established their own chapel on the grounds of their family home. Joseph's life has been plagued with strange happenings and tragedies, which seem to be connected to the number 11. His intrigue soon uncovers deeper mythological and religious significance to the number and possibly his family.

11-11-11 is written and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who previously brought us Saw 2 – 4 and the superb 2010 remake of Mothers Day. Bousman has made skillful use of popular synchronicity around the number 11, where numerologists and string theorists believe that events linked to the time 11:11 appear more often than can be put down to mere chance or accident and has great symbolism in the universe.

The basic idea for the movie is engaging with lots of potential, unfortunately, this is where the films merits end. The plot becomes tedious and bland fast, holding this pace for the majority of the film. The scares consist of frightening faces appearing in the shadows or windows, but they fail to show any snap or shock value, becoming repetitive and tiresome early on. The special effects, especially the costumes and make up, feel amateurish and almost laughable a times. The acting and dialogue is decidedly mediocre, the characters are difficult to like or relate to in many ways. The twist ending of the movie was better than expected, however, it does not make up for its unexciting story and production short comings. Overall a great idea, wasted.

The end is near... If you believe...

"After the tragic death of his wife and child, famed American author Joseph Crone travels from the United States to Barcelona, Spain to reunite with his estranged brother Samuel and dying father, Richard. However, fate has a different plan for Joseph as his life becomes plagued with strange happenings and the constant sightings of the number 11. Curiosity quickly turns to obsession, and Joseph soon realizes that this number holds a horrific meaning not only to himself but possibly to all of religion. Isolated in a foreign country with only the support of his companion, Sadie, Joseph soon realizes that 11/11/11 is more than just a date, it's a WARNING!"

For all you Darren Lynn Bousman Saw fans out there do not expect anyone to get blown to bits or sliced apart or ground into human hamburger... this film is one that will have you jump out of your seat rather than puke on your popcorn. Visual trickeries, eerie sounds and music will set the tone here. The Spanish scenery is enjoyable and the cast plays very well. The undertone of the film has an Omen-like quality that comes to a head toward the end on the title date in the film.

Overall a good thriller especially if you are a church goer, bible reader or believe that the end of our existence rests in the hands of the supernatural rather than our own selfish destruction of this otherwise perfect planet.

I enjoyed this film and give it 7 of 10 for corny demon make up and a few overly obvious CGI bits. Otherwise worth the watch... maybe even a second time...

awful

Well what can i say about most movies today coming out of studios today apart from a major lack of creativity, however onto the film, which i found after watching it and thinking there's an hour and a half of my life i'll never get back. Truly awful so called spooky demons which you will probably think the crew members have just raided the local fancy dress store. The acting was terrible and the story was too stupid to follow it just lacked everything a good movie should have. The only good part of this film was when the credits rolled sorry but this is awful at best and tragic such a shame as the trailer showed such promise. You have been warned!!

Not what I thought, and that is avoid thing

This movie has little to nothing to do with the trailer. Forget the flashy 'you are fuc$ed' trailers. The only thing 'fuc$Ed will be your expectations going in if you even watch the trailers.

The movie is slow. And I mean slow. It's more of a character study than a horror film. But in my opinion pays off in the end.

This is my first review on IMDb, and only signed up after I saw the venom being spewed. Not my favorite movie by any means. But a heck of a lot better than the half stars I have been seeing.

I think you need to go in with the mind set - no gore, no violence, no jump scares. It's not that type of film. It much more akin to something like THE OMEN.

Maybe I am just a sucker for religious films.

A decent indie thriller/horror.

A lot of negative early feedback has forced my hand in defending this film. It's not that bad and I was actually engaged in the story almost to the end.

The biggest complaint is in the acting department. The main leads weren't bad, but the supporting cast barely held on--a similar issue I had with Repo and Saw II, two of Bousman's better films.

Now the plot is fairly original, if somewhat predictable. And I know the religious themes have been done to death, but most horror films end up going down that path. This film simply puts religion front and center. But it is far from a pro-Christian film like "The Rite" or "The Exorcist". The subject matter is more akin to "Lord of Illusions" or "The Ninth Gate".

The plot: Basically, a famous author after having suffered a horrible tragedy and now in hiding is called to his father's deathbed in Spain. And there he uncovers a predestined fate for his family involving the upcoming date 11-11-11.

The low budget seems to work in this film's favor. Remember when a just a shadow or shape in the dark could scare you? The film relies mostly on the mystery and the setting to provide the horror. Only in the last act do "actual" things happen. The CGI effects are fairly bad, but thankfully conservatively used. It's nice for a change to have a horror film try and scare us without grossing us out.

The last act is quite poor, unfortunately. The big setup from the first hour leads us into a predictable and kinda overdone ending. I prefer my conclusions to be either more subtle or more surprising.

I respect what Bousman is doing with these less commercial, indie horror films. He tries out new things with low budgets and seems to get his vision across. I'd rather continue to watch films like this and Repo over the crap that other "visionaries" like Shyamalan have been doing lately with much more money.

With some better acting and a tighter ending it could've ended up a minor classic. As it stands, a nice film.

A sadly disappointing, deeply silly film

I had hope for director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2-4), since Repo! The Genetic Opera was a flawed but interesting experiment and his Mother's Day remake was actually pretty much excellent IMHO. But alas…bad movie is bad. Bousman's directing skils aren't even the real problem here (the film is shot decently and is at times pretty atmospheric), but near everything else is... There is hardly enough story here to warrant a half hour Twilight Zone segment, let alone a feature film. For an hour, the same things happen over and over again, even going so far that 2 characters have the exact same conversation no less than 3 times. Acting is hammy at best, especially from the lead actor, who's film-noir detective like voice-over nearly takes the film into the realm of parody. The music is constanty omnious, even when nothing remotely creepy is happening. The finale is actually pretty OK and I actually liked the ending, but the makers damn near give us the resolution of the movie in a powerpoint presentation with the director shouting "See? See what we did there???" I actually had quite some fun watching this, giggling at how bad this all was. And I admit I jumped a few times. Just make sure you don't go out of your way to see this. It is a deeply silly film.

00-00-00

The movie should be renamed to '00-00-00' because it is so terrible that i started to question my sanity for watching the movie.

The plot is terrible, the acting below par, visual effects pathetic and the whole sequence of events is childish. I fell in trap of watching this movie because of the hype created by the date it tends to represent and i wrote this review just because i could be helpful to someone who is planning to watch this movie.

If you need an advice, don't watch this one even when you have no other choice. I wish I could rate this movie any less than 1 because of the utter nonsense this movie is full of.

A Totally Deja Vú Bore

This movie is one big bore. I sat it out but the story is pretty vague. The only thing what makes this movie worth watching is the fact that it can be classified as a "Religious Thriller" in which the 11.11 phenomenon plays the leading part.

For some dark reason the movie plot seems familiar, like as in: Why the heck does it seem so familiar? Haven't I seen this movie before? Good chance you might have. For all I know it could very well be released back in the 90's under another title...

I dare you to sit it out...Because no spectacular things are happening in it.It is not filmed in Hollywood style with tons of (CGI)effects. Instead of that the makers tried to keep the movie, acting and subject small yet prominently playing a part thru the whole movie. Good thing 'cause otherwise there wouldn't even BE a movie.

Plot line: Thin. Acting: Seen better. Effects: Poor and clearly, visibly applied.

Same story different country

OK first of all this is my first time reviewing any movie on IMDb since this was so terrible I felt compelled to let people know how awful this was. I usually turn to IMDb for all movies Netflix, RedBox, or theatrical release and the reviews are usually pretty spot on. Anyways don't waste your time seeing this movie it has been done over and over to death. The visual effects were very poor being that Halloween just passed I saw scarier costumes on kids. Hollywood just please let these type of movies die already especially if your not going to put any creativity into the script. The acting is horrible it felt like a direct to video release (at least should be) all in all is a very predictable movie not scary whatsoever. If you don't mind wasting your time and money go see this, however if you are smart and must see this movie wait till it's on Netflix I promise you will thank me later.

Hilarious!

This is an awful movie, no doubt about that. But please, don't let that dissuade you from watching it (though I would wait for the DVD). Why? Because it's hilarious! I can't remember the last time I heard movie dialogue so contrived, and it's ridiculously funny. The focus is always on the main character's lack of faith. So naturally he has a strained relationship with his brother and father, who are pastors. But there's no need to make this apparent through actions, the story etc. No, might as well point it out explicitly and constantly! The main character is simply unable to talk about anything except how he hates religion/god. Likewise, most other characters talk of nothing but their faith. Apparently these are all very simple people. 2 stars because of the hilarity. The horror gets 0.

Really a great movie!!!

I've finally seen 11-11-11 : really a great movie!!! Chilling atmosphere, terrifying (and original) story, terrific images and photography (by Joseph White), unexpected and nihilistic ending! Bousman changes his directing style (quite different from his previous works), the main theme, the genre, but he proves once more that he is a talented director and story teller! The cast is credible and they did a good work, especially Timothy Gibbs (the main protagonist). Very good the visual effects, a little bit less the make-up of the 'monsters'.

A must see!

My vote : 9 out of 10!

11-11-11 - A scarier version of "Number 23" that was better and cheesier then I expected. Overall not a bad movie. I liked it. I say B+

"The day that Sarah & David died so did my faith that there was some sort of higher power." Joesph Crone is an author trying to deal with the loss of his wife and child. After getting a call from his brother he travels to Spain to see him and his dying father. When the date and time of 11:11 keeps showing up in his life he wonders if it has meaning. I will start by saying that I actually did like this movie. I also have to say that it is still a high class B movie though. The best way to describe this is that it is a little better and scarier version of "Number 23". If you like that movie you will like this one. The movie deals with some very religious issues and makes you wonder who is right and what is real. The movie rode the line of serious and cheesy the whole time. Stepping over to the cheesy side more often but still I liked it. There really isn't much else to say about this one but for any hardcore horror fans this is a good one to watch. For everyone else I will say I liked it, but don't go in expecting a great movie. Overall, a movie that I enjoyed and fans of "Number 23" will love. I give it a B+.
