We turned this movie off after watching it for about 3 minutes. I even called Redbox and got a refund on the movie - which I have never done before.
It starts off really weird with characters that were not even in the previous movie. Marley is being watched by this neighbor boy and his mom thinks he "her son" is a screw up. Their acting was terrible.
Once Marley started "talking" - we turned the movie off. Marley is played by a real dog but his mouth is animated. It looked really cheesy. If Marley's mouth won't have been animated, we would have probably watched it of another 3 minutes or so.
This movie is meant for kids ages 4-8.

Marley is the worst puppy in the world. John and Jenny are away on a writing assignment. Carol Grogan is dog-sitting. She leaves her son Bodi with Marley in the care of her father Fred Grogan. Bodi falls for Kaycee Ellis who tells him about the Ultimate Puppy Championship.
How does one do a sequel to a dog movie with a well-known heart-breaking ending? This ain't it. This is a silly kiddie movie with dogs akin to Air Bud. This is unworthy of the original and needs to be cut out of history itself. If Marley & Me needs a sequel, maybe it should be the brother of Marley as one of the other puppies in the same litter. This is bad especially for a sequel to a really good movie.

For everyone who has came on here and wrote a horrible review for this movie... I don't think you understand that this is a Children's movie!! If you enjoyed the original 'Marley & Me' thats great, but this is NOT a sequel to it. This is the "puppy years" which shares ONLY the name, "Marley." Which is for kids.. I read the original "Marley" book and enjoyed the original movie. Before renting "The puppy years" I knew it was for children, so I was not surprised nor disappointed.. All I did was read a review for it before I rented for my DAUGHTER! My 4 year old liked it. She also likes the "Buddies" movies. If your CHILD likes the buddy movies then they'll probably like Marley & Me- the puppy years!!"
I'm giving this movie an 8 to make up for all the crappy scores it got before me. I don't know what these people were expecting, it's geared towards children, get over it. I at worst would give it a 7 because I thought it was cute, and yes, it's going a different route than the original Marley & Me by letting the puppies talk but once again, it's for children. And 52 year old grown ups like me who just love movies about dogs in general, and some cat movies also- lol. I bought it, and I'll watch it again, it's cute. It's not at the top of my dog movies list, but I don't know there's really a bottom as I pretty much love them all equally- lol.
The other reviewers are right. This movie could be better.
For starters it does not have the same tone of the original "Marley" film. OK whatever it is meant for different audience - that of young children. But if you are going to keep to the character of the original "Marley" keep to the character. The whole point of the Marley story is that other for some basic things such as not going to the bathroom in the house he is UNTRAINABLE!!!! To suggest that two 13 year olds who are untrained as dog trainers can train an untrainable dog doesn't even make sense.
Then you have two 13 year olds acting like they are five, particularly the boy. A 13 year old boy having to convince his mother that he is old enough and responsible for the responsibility of a dog is laughable. Thirteen year olds are not responsible, but they are not completely irresponsible either.
Then you have the evil characters. This is a film not a comic book. Even if this film is meant for children, let's try to be at least somewhat believable.
I did like the actor who played the grandfather. He was very likable.

- ErroresWhen Marley is chasing the cat through the backyard, he knocks over a potted plant and breaks the pot. It is quite visible that the pot already has huge cracks in it prior to the pot falling and breaking on those cracks.
