'Chefpiet' is a character portrayed by actor Don van Dijke on multiple shows based on the tradition of saint Nicolas. In 2013 it had been a few years since Chefpiet last starred in a television series. Fans asked the channel that aired a previous series if he could come back. However, competitive series "Slot Marsepeinstein" by channel Nickelodeon and creator Studio 100 decided to give answer to the demand. As a result that same year actor Don van Dijke made his very first appearance in the series "Slot Marsepeinstein" as the character 'Smartpiet'.
In 2016 an album was released with new cover versions of songs from the television series and several traditional songs. These versions were sung by non-Piet characters from multiple different shows of Studio 100. The name of the album is "De Leukste Studio 100 Sinterklaasliedjes".
Starting in the 4th season (2013) Smartpiet and Swingpiet both have their costumes in a shared style and the names of their functions (Smartpiet and Swingpiet) both start with the 'S'. The reason for this is probably because they both have a music career; Swingpiet sang most of the songs on the first album of "Slot Marsepeinstein" while Smartpiet performed songs for a different television series.
Although the series was never a very big success on television it turned out to be an integral part of the Nickelodeon channel when Nickelodeon did not renew the contract with the production company in 2013. Many complaints were heard and on YouTube unofficial videos became a gigantic success especially when recognizable traditional elements were implemented in the title. Despite the gained popularity Slot Marsepeinstein did not return to the Dutch and Flemish Nickelodeon channels. Since 2014 new episodes (in a slightly changed concept) air on the Flemish channel Studio 100 TV, which according to a spokesperson recorded highlights in the ratings of Studio 100 TV. The Dutch channel of Nickelodeon experienced a gigantic drop in viewing ratings since their cancellation of Slot Marsepeinstein, although as far as is known the drop in ratings was never completely proven to be entirely caused by the absence of Slot Marsepeinstein.
In this series it is revealed that saint Nicolas also has castles in France. In the tradition saint Nicolas lives in Spain 11 months per year and there is no mention of France.
