Last year, we brought you a very cool CG Animated proof-of-concept short film for a Sci-Fi action-adventure feature film trilogy directed by David Weinstein from Black Sun Entertainment, entitled Azureus Rising. The film went on to earn Weinstein the #4 spot on the end of year industry polls for aspiring filmmakers.

Over the past year David noticed a flood of overly polished and cheesy costumed superhero movies. This raised the question, “Why isn’t anyone doing more serious, grounded and dramatic toned superhero genre films? Movies like Unbreakable and Batman Begins did well at the box office and audiences and fans loved them”. This inspired David to contact friend and writer Shintaro Shimosawa about a new film concept.

Though it started as a very insider thing, The Black List has recently become more popular and mainstream. For those who may not know, it's an annual list of the year's best unproduced screenplays as voted on by about 300 Hollywood development executives and high-level assistants. We recently posted the 2010 list [1] and looking back at some previous years (2007 [2], 2008 [3], 2009 [4]), films such as Recount, The Beaver and The Social Network all sat near the top of the list. Skim over any of them and you'll see names of films that are out, are coming out and more. It's a big deal. This year, a new Black List of sorts has come out. Dubbed Viewfinder, it's supposed to do for directors what The Black List did for screenwriters. Viewfinder is a compilation of "the top commercials, shorts and/or music videos of 2010." Several of the directors on the list already have deals or are in production on films.

Here’s another viral short film that’s attracted Hollywood’s attention; It’s called Azureus Rising written and directed by an ex-ilm employee David Weinstein. For his efforts, Weinstein just signed with CAA. This the 6th short film in recent months that’s gotten industry folks and fanboys alike, talking. Producer/Director David Weinstein says,

The Azureus film is about the transformation of our hero named Eric. Eric, at the beginning of the story is a troubled young boy who then is thrust into this life changing journey which molds him into a heroic freedom fighter. It’s a new take on the classic Hamlet theme set in space.

Alright let's blend a little horror with the sci-fi for Film Friday. This latest short is called Azureus Rising and entire film is shot with CGI, so the limitations are few, the action is high, and the film is simply a lot of fun to watch. Sit back, relax and watch a freedom fighter take on insurmountable odds in this third short feature for Film Friday (Quiet).

The short synopsis here:

Black Sun Entertainment has release a proof-of-concept to Azureus Rising and the studio hopes to expand it into a feature film trilogy.  The sci-fi short is directed by David Weinstein, along with a core team of about five people working on the production in a span of more then two months.  While there isn't much on narrative, it delivers on the action and visual aspect.

Azureus is the story of a young man who after escaping death and enduring a life changing journey - matures into a heroic freedom fighter. Azureus Rising is an epic tale of self discovery, obligation and love against all odds.
