I took my 9 year old nephew, he has adhd, can be hard to please, fidgeted all the way through, then when the credits rolled, hugged me and told me he loved it.
As a rule, I avoid kids films like the plague. I didn't hate it, at all.
The acting, animation, script and cinematography were pretty decent, as was the plot. It made me laugh at least three times (very hard to do) - it has some excellent morals/themes around loss, self worth, forgiveness and friendship. It's a traditional heroic journey/quest. It's a format well known, so we knew what we were getting. The crayon is used in some really creative ways, getting the characters out of some sticky situations.
I think a lot of films these days, especially in the few kids films I've endured, are very busy, loud, and complex when they don't need to be. This was simple and fun. There's also some in jokes for the grown ups, that was appreciated.
It definitely got laughs, and it seemed like the kids leaving this movie were happy.
Would love an 18+ Harold and his purple crayon. Just putting that into the universe.

What a fantastic, unassuming piece of pure entertainment, and so unexpected. HATPC is good, clean-hearted and spirited fun for children and adults alike. It almost makes me think about how people would have received The Wizard Of Oz back in the day, it's that happy and awe-inspiring with its visuals and comedy. I've heard of 'Zooey Deschanel' a few times but never actively seen her in anything, and I have to say what a fantastic, endearing portrayal she does of the mom. Also the boy is incredible. And as Harold, wielding his purple crayon of justice, Zachary Levi is incredible. The imagination in this is beyond what I thought cinema had given up. It's so small-scale cute that I assumed had long been given up to the TV channels. It's an amazing film.

Inside of his book, adventurous Harold (Zachary Levi) can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book's pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life - and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends' creativity to save both the real world and his own.
What a fabulous story. It's quite unique, I can't think of another story like it. It's utterly engaging, perfect for people of all ages, and will especially resonate with those who have fervent imaginations.
Apart from the awful Zooey Deschanel all the cast is great and dare I say it...believable! I actually need a piece of purple crayon now to make my dreams come true!
Sadly it's not going to be a blockbuster, but I think this film will be extremely popular and remain a family favourite for a long time. I gave it a very solid 6, which would easily have been a 7 without Deschanel.

Summary
Harold and the Purple Crayon is a sequel to the beloved book that somehow is just as charming as the piece of literature. A fantastic and fun movie for families, it holds charming comedy, innocent jokes, and a few adult jokes that are easily G-rated to make this enjoyable for all ages. This sequel takes all of the innocence of the movie and unleashes it onto the real world and in doing so provides plenty of lessons for the world to review and hopefully learn. That heartfelt presentation adds this quaint and enjoyable tone, only amplified by the feel-good music that accompanies many of the "epic" bouts of crayon catastrophe. The imagination of the film is intense in terms of that elaborate wildness of youth and I loved how much they mirrored the inner spirit of a child in the way the drawings transitioned into the items they "semi-resembled". For me, Levi is the star of the show though. Like so many of his roles, he just has a way of unleashing his full potential into the role, giving it this odd man-child that is enjoyable rather than sad or annoying. When combined with the others, he manages to bring a dynamic portrayal of the character without seeming to try too hard.
If only the full imagination was unleashed in this film. A magical purple crayon can create a lot of magic, but it didn't quite craft the masterpiece I think they were shooting for. The innocent humor stays a little too juvenile in tone, lacking the finesse, breaks, and planning that I like in my PG-rated films. The odd humor and awkward styles are perfect for laughs, but in terms of the perfect movie are missing some of the composure that I've seen in other films. Deschanel didn't do much for me outside of a few laughs and some sparkling piano work but feels very underutilized as the source of sarcastic jokes and antagonism to Harold's optimism. And with a short run time and presenting so many things, I think the movie fell flat in terms of standing out as that awesome movie of the year. And though there are some great finishes and a narrative that holds a few heart-tugging lines... it still falls short of the gold for me.
Thus, with all the factors coming in, my recommendation is to catch this one at home with the family to optimize your time and money. As for the scores, here they are:
Adventure/Animation/Comedy/Family/Fantasy: 7.0 Movie Overall: 6.0.

I was hesitant to go see this film after looking at the low meta critic, and since I don't have a particular tie to the original book. I took my kids as an act of summer break distraction and it did just the trick. I understand why this is getting rated so low, I also love the meme reviews claiming it as the best movie ever made. This movie actually has some really great visual effects, and I think Zachary Levi's acting makes the film entertaining to watch. The problems with this movie are numerable, weird subplots between these animals turned into humans, and two different antagonists with one that they just leave behind in the Final Cut. The show lacks a clear vision, which is a shame because I think there was good bones to this. Overall I think it's a totally decent kids movie, but as a whole it is simply mediocre and lacking a clear statement.

Giving this an 5/10 rating
Would of been better as an animated feature, perhaps, but the story and characters are so bad, it would not of made any difference, it feels like a very bad Saturday morning 1980's cartoon.
Poor old Zachary Levi and Zooey Deschanel are the only good things in this, and they act their socks off, but can't do much with this limp film. There is no magic from the rest of the poor cast, with only great VFX that are the best thing in this. And I like Purple, but not in here.
Levi is in real danger of being typecast if he keeps playing big kids, he can do much more, Deschanel must of been passing by, and they just grabbed her, waste of great actors. The idea for the plot is fine, but it's so bland and tame, even a 5 year old would be offended by this tripe.
You have intelligent stuff as 'Inside out 2' still showing, and Sony waste our time with this. Really!
This needed to be super good, if it wants to be respect the source material, which this misses by miles, better off and cheaper to buy some crayons instead, more fun too.

Kids, wife and myself all enjoyed Harold and The Purple Crayon.
I understand some people who have a close connection to the book aren't thrilled with the film. I don't know the book that well, so I was able to go into the movie with an open mind.
As a standalone story, it stands up as a fun and humorous feel-good kids film with great imagination.
Levi does a good job humanizing a very outrageous premise. He blends over the top behaviour you'd expect from a cartoon character with sincere heart. He really seems right in his wheelhouse here. Reynolds and Howery as Porcupine and Moose are great fun. And Clement is delightful as a funny antagonist you really enjoy rooting against.
As an adult viewer, you will certainly have to suspend your disbelief - even more than you would for other family fantasy films (the way they execute the leap from the "book world" to the "real world" was even more outrageous that I'd ever have expected) and the plot develops so fast it's hard to keep up with the leaps in logic. With that said, it settles in to a fun l, easy to consume, adventure.
My kids loved it and look forward to seeing it again. My wife, who is an educator familiar with the book, liked it very much as well. For me, it was a fun movie to enjoy with my family at the end of a school week.

It was unique that they decided to use an adult version of Harold and Zachary Levi did an amazing job being that grown up child. OfCourse Levi has proved that he can play a man child as Shazam so not really the biggest range in acting, which is great cause I thought it was charming and funny.
The dude from Flight of the Concords plays Gary who was actually a perfect villain for a semi children's story and I do mean Semi. Some of the jokes in the film felt a little too grown up. I know children will get them but not sure if you should tell them.
A similar movie came out this summer called If, but i thought this movie's kind heart had a lot more value to it so i pick this over IF.

This movie is similar to the movie IF but slightly different, won't explain that because that will spoil the movie. This movie was a little bit entertaining because the people (who created this movie), creative skills are spot on artistically good. It is more visually appealing and contains more action, movement, tries to provoke excitement & energy emotions out of the audience. It is very dynamic and makes it look like all the actors involved in this movie are not only high on sugar , adult sugar ;) , but are very similar to dogs who are having zoomies (running extremely fast around or onto objects over & over again). It is worth looking but it is not that exciting as the ads & promotion about it, claim it is.

My kids were excited to see this because they both read the book when they were little. I wish this movie was getting more attention because it is adorable. It's a great, kind-hearted family movie that stays true to the spirit of the book. (We have also seen Garfield, IF, and Despicable Me 4 this year and Harold is by far my favorite.)
It moves quick enough that, even though the story isn't all that complicated, it keeps you engaged and laughing. I smiled through the whole thing.
Zachary Levi is a PERFECT Harold. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job. He hits the perfect balance between innocent imagination and a love of fun and adventure. He did such a great job.
We all genuinely enjoyed this.

Based on the children's book, Harold is all grown up and is curious to meet his old man, whom he is accustomed to as the narrator of the life he knows of. Suddenly, the narration is stopped and Harold makes it into the real world along with his friends Moose and Porcupine. While he is baffled by the new world, Moose and Porcupine take human forms before Porcupine getting separated. Thus, begins their quest to find their old man and they befriend a duo of mother and son, whom they bond quickly. The quest leads them to a librarian who has his own agenda. With these worlds colliding, how does Howard and co, save the day, forms rest of the story.
It was really a painful watch and I have to admit it upfront. The humor was too lame and the delivery too bland. If the target audience are the kids then the makers clearly have underestimated the kids' preferences. In it's entire runtime, there wasn't a single memorable moment or a funny joke to laugh at. The writing is as silly as the execution, leaving no scope for any emotional connect with the characters. Harold gets to randomly meet the humans in real world and everything happens so conveniently, leaving the magic to fizzle out.

I barely remember reading Harold and the Purple Crayon as a kid, but the memory came back after watching the newly released movie of the same name. This follows up the book. Harold (Zachary Levi), now grown up, is still having adventures with his two friends Moose (Lil Rel Howery) and Porcupine (Tanya Reynolds), drawing whatever came to his mind with his magical purple crayon, kind of like Green Lantern. One day, the old man (Alfred Molina) who narrates their lives suddenly stops, giving Harold the idea to draw a door to the real world. Thus begins a typical "fish-out-of-water" story involving a naïve hero, a single mom named Terri (Zooey Deschanel) who hits Harold with her car, and a desperate librarian/author named Gary (Jemaine Clement) who just wants to be recognized. This takes a bit to get going but it definitely grew on me as it went on. It's cute and heartwarming for the whole family. The actors knew what movie this was, especially Clement, who is very fun to watch. This movie came out at a very bad time, failing to compete with much bigger movies and absolutely bombing in the box office. Saying that, I highly recommend taking your kids to see HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON.

Harold and the Purple Crayon is based on the book of the same name by Crockett Johnson. Inside his book, Harold(Zachary Levi) loves adventure and can make anything come to life, just by drawing it with his magical purple crayon. When he grows up, Harold draws a door to the real world. Harold realizes that he has much to learn about life.
Harold and the Purple Crayon is a good film. Director Carlos Saldanha has given us a fun, heartwarming & family-friendly movie, just like the Ice Age & Rio franchises. However, those franchises are far superior. This film is mainly aimed at kids & though adults will be moderately entertained, it isn't enough to hold our attention and interest, even through its short runtime. The animation is gorgeous. The visual effects are brilliant. Zachary Levi is perfect as Harold. However, Levi has been typecast ever since he played Shazam in Shazam!(2019) & Shazam! Fury of the Gods(2023). Zachary Levi's performance as Harold is exactly like his portrayal of the DC superhero. Lil Rel Howery is spectacular as Moose. Benjamin Bottani is awesome as Mel. Zooey Deschanel is fantastic as Terry. Tanya Reynolds is outstanding as Porcupine. Jemaine Clement is superb as Gary. The supporting cast is impressive. Harold and the Purple Crayon is not a must watch. However, it's worth a watch with your tiny tots and I guarantee you that they'll have a whale of a time!

My grandkids liked the book and looked forward to the movie. However, they and I were bored early on, as it dragged out scenes. Surprisingly, the adult actors seemed invested and toiled to make things moved along.
One big problem - the child lead role was woefully miscast. He seemed not to have any clue of how his reactions should have been, so it was hard to empathize with him. (Did he read the book?). A Jacob Trembly or Nathan Gamble level boy actor could have greatly improved this movie (I know they're too old, but surely there are others??) On the plus side, the camera work and the cinematography were both excellent. As I noted earlier, the adult actors didn't just "phone it in", as sometimes happens in children's movies -- they gave it their all. However, that wasn't enough to overcome the problems noted above.

The idea is great, the story is not so great, I was wanting laugh a lot more, there are bits that are funny, but not enough.
My daughter who is 9 actually loved it, although she didn't really lol many times, she said she enjoyed it, she wishes she had a purple crayon too!!
It's worth watching, just to pass a couple of hours, it's more of a straight to tv movie for me though.
I hope there is not a Harold and the purple crayon two, they'd have to have a stronger storyline to make it work in my view.
I haven't really heard or seen many of the actors in it, but they all seem to work well together.

This would have been made around the early 2000s, but somehow, was shelved and placed on hold for years, before being pumped into the modern era and filled with cringe. Yea, that perfectly describes this movie.
Don't get me wrong, I understand this is a kids movie but I enjoyed many kids movies even as an adult. Many of them have good messages and good heartfelt moments. Unfortunately, this movie falls apart on every level and doesn't do any justice to Crockett Johnson's works.
Filled with uninspired themes, bland characters, and predictable structure, its child-like engagement and charm falls nowhere and mashed together with unconvincing performances and emotional connections. It loses the magic of what made the original book (which I grew up reading) into a sloppy mess and poorly made story with a message that's hypocritical.
Even the animated moments look pretty rough and I have a feeling A. I. was involved.
Want to make a good live-action movie from a children's book? Do what "Paddington" did.

6.7/10 (Definitely Recommend)
There's nothing crazy unique about this film, but it's simple and enjoyable. It's super family friendly with nothing added to make it weird or controversial. It's a movie like "IF" that reminds us that we all need to have a little imagination sometimes to make things exciting. The cast has great chemistry together. Perhaps they're a little rigid at times because the film isn't very emotional in any sort of way. It still makes you laugh a little, but more so chuckle. I think this is a good film for the whole family, but it would probably be geared towards 12 and under roughly. However, any age could certainly enjoy it. While I ended the film smiling the antagonist of the film is weak, and the send off is mediocre, but better than I expected. Still, I'd watch this one again.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!

The movie "Harold and the Purple Crayon" tries desperately to be funny and thrilling, but it sadly falls too short with multiple dead ends with lack of story telling.
From what is based upon a children's book about a kid with a purple crayon. Who is able to draw anything and make it come true is a fun idea for a story for kids. I understand that this movie has its best moments and area of interest with kids rather than adults, but the movie still ain't good in many areas.
Firstly: The movie has way too many side jumps and scenes that are just not necessary for the plot. It just makes the movie less fun rather than fun to follow.
The cast was well casted but even big smiling Zachery Levi couldn't make up for the poor acting and lines that are just weird and unfunny.
But again... It is made for kids. It did though have a couple of dialogue that made me laugh a little.
The CGI ain't great either in multiple scenes. It just looks funky and unfinished in so many scenes. But there is also moments with great CGI.
The biggest problem about this movie is its antagonist. For what is a totally forgettable antagonist with very poor dialogue and what I would call unnecessary focus of plot direction.
This movie also has many similarities to the movie "IF" with Ryan Reynolds. But this movie don't have the same ups like IF had. The CGI and all around score was way better in the movie IF.
But overall the movie doesn't hit quite well for me and probably won't for many people above the age of 10. But the movie still tries at some parts to tell a heartwarming story about imagination and that everything can come true if you just try and believe. But still a rating of 2/10.

But overall the movie doesn't hit quite well for me and probably won't for many people above the age of 10. But the movie still tries at some parts to tell a heartwarming story about imagination and that everything can come true if you just try and believe. But still a rating of 2/10.

"Harold and the Purple Crayon" is not only a classic example of great American children's literature but also a shining example of American cinema's ability to adapt and enhance literary works. The film captures the imagination and simplicity of the original story while showcasing the power of visual storytelling and the themes central to American cultural identity. Its success in translating a beloved book into a cinematic masterpiece underscores the enduring appeal and innovative spirit of American cinema, making it a fitting epitome of the genre.
This film enlightens something great, a complex and diverse tone that the directors set.

Based on a 1950s children's book, "Harold and the Purple Crayon" is a decent movie that veers between light-hearted comedy and slightly darker fantasy.
Harold (Zachary Levi), Moose (Milton Howery Jr.), and Porcupine (Tanya Louise Reynolds) emerge from the colourful pages of their book into the real world, armed with a purple crayon that can create anything. They're befriended by Terri (Zooey Deschanel) and her son Mel (Benjamin Bottani).
The story reminded me of the "Scribblenauts" video game series, where players can create almost anything they can think of to solve puzzles or cause sandbox mayhem. Seeing what Harold (and others) creates with the crayon is probably the highlight of the movie - ranging from airplanes to a spider-fly.
Most of the humour comes from Harold, Moose, and Porcupine's 'fish out of water' naivety. The darker turn comes when frustrated fantasy writer/librarian Gary (Jemaine Clement) realises his devious plans for the crayon (a nice turn as a villain for the Kiwi comedian/musician). Usually known as a comedic actor, Deschanel plays the straight woman here, but also shows off her piano skills (though she doesn't sing).

Why are movies getting worse?
Nearly every movie the last several years has been bad. Why? What have we as an audience done to deserve this treatment? We pay LOTS of money nowadays to go to the movies. We buy movies at home. Why?
Why is CGI getting worse?
Seems like CGI is getting worse and worse. Why? I thought technology was suppose to get better throughout time, not worse. But it is getting worse.
Why was this movie made?
Who was this movie made for?
My 4 year old son? If so, it should have been advertised as such. Instead it was marketed as a family movie. And the family did not have a good time.
2/10 Horrible.

I used to read Harold and the Purple Crayon to my kids at bedtime, and they loved it. This movie is very imaginative and follows right along from the books. What would happen if Harold grew up and drew himself into the real world? Surprising things! It was great. I especially loved the disaster at the Everything store. And drawing the airplane, and everything he drew turned out great. Moose and Porcupine threw me off at first, since they turned into humans, but they were excellently acted, especially Porcupine. And I loved every time Moose turned into his true shape.
An excellent movie for the family. I also noted that every time they rode on a bike, skateboard, or plane, they all wore helmets, excellent role models.
