I thought this film was quite well done for not being a big blockbuster. You know how professional wrestling sets up a physical conflict between bruisers and play acts the whole thing? That's kind of what we end up with here, as the lead character is supposed to be a wrestler, and some of the cult members attacking him are big muscular guys with outfits and masks. Same basic idea, but with knives and other instruments tossed in occasionally. And it's clearly planned this way, because if you think about the plot as is, it really makes no sense for the cultists to be extravagantly dressed athletes. Just go with it. Add in normal people in peril, a girlfriend with that fun Canadian twang where she says her owwws as ewwws (like when she talks "aboot" something), lots of gore, a wise beyond her years kid, some cheesy jokes, a screaming decapitated head and some occult mumbo jumbo, and now you're talking. Something about the every guy fighting off supernatural attackers while cracking lame jokes appeals to me, and it seems a lot more natural when it's a big guy who can take the hits instead of the typical scrawny (and, for some reason I don't understand, usually sexist) kid you're used to seeing in these movies. While this is not the best at any one thing, it has a fair amount of everything. Well, OK, fair warning, I guess not nudity, if that's a dealbreaker for you. But probably everything else you'd want out of a horror comedy is here.

I personally don't care for Horror movies that mix their tone as much as this one does. Like I mention in my title, 'Re-animator' is way Over The Top too, but maintains more of a campy/satire tone throughout. This one right from the opening scene starts off with prolonged, extreme violence. Just not really my thing, especially if you are going to mix goofy humour with it later. The tones are just to extreme for my personal 'Taste' (such as it is)
However, in all fairness if you like these kinds of films that mix extreme violence with Over The Top gory humour, you may indeed like this one just fine. But, just for me, I don't really care for this more 'Modern' take on this kind of 'Horror', although I did kind of like the Supernatural elements as basic as they were.
For example, it is similar as to why I didn't enjoy the recent film 'Violent Night' Again, they were trying to mix humour with extreme violence, and in this case with a young girl involved. To me, I feel you should either go for a lighter touch and play up the humour, or take the whole thing completely seriously and just make a straight forward Slasher film. Just my take on it.
But, like I say, IF you are the kind who likes this more 'Modern' approach to Horror, and you don't mind the mix of really goofy humour and extreme, brutal violence, then you may very well enjoy this movie more than I did.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My Particular Way of Rating:
5 - Flawed, but with some entertainment value.
6. A decently passable story maybe worth a watch.
7. A solid film, well made, effective, and entertaining.
And, obviously, you can probably figure out what above and below these would mean... : )
I recently watched the Canadian film 🇨🇦 Here for Blood (2023) on Shudder. The story follows a professional wrestler who reluctantly agrees to cover a babysitting job for his girlfriend. What starts as a quiet night quickly turns into chaos when a group tries to kidnap the girl he's watching. From there, it's a wild ride of blood, guts, and gore.
Directed by Daniel Turres (Terry's Car Gets Stolen), the film stars Shawn Roberts (X-Men), Maya Misaljevic (Locke & Key), Joelle Farrow (Turkey Drop), and Jesse Buck (Nightmare Alley).
This movie was an absolute blast and has serious rewatch value. It's a self-aware horror comedy that embraces its over-the-top nature and delivers with style. The soundtrack is fantastic, and the script is packed with fun scenarios and clever references-including nods to Little Shop of Horrors and Scream. The kill scenes are especially impressive: elite throat slashes, creative gore, fun burn effects, and an awesome "he's not dead" moment that had me grinning.
While the ending didn't hit quite as hard as the rest of the film, it didn't take away from the overall entertainment.
In conclusion, Here for Blood is a fun, blood-soaked ride that's a worthwhile addition to the horror genre. I'd give it a solid 7/10 and highly recommend it to horror-comedy fans.
Phoebe is a college student, short on money, and while she has a crucial exam coming up, she took a babysitting job, because they pay well. Her friends convinced her to ask her boyfriend Tom to babysit while she studies. Tom is a wrestler, and we see him fight, and takes a real beating but wins, and for that pockets a total of $20. One gets the idea that the comedy is going to be on the absurd side. Yes, over the top, and buckets of blood since babysitting for Grace means they are caught in the middle of a cult, and that cult is evil and supernatural. There is not great acting, but there is plenty of over the top action and it becomes funny to watch to see how the movie unfolds. There really is no horror, as things are too silly for that.
Sitting down to watch the 2022 comedy horror movie "Here for Blood" here in 2024 without ever having heard about it, I have to admit that I wasn't sure what I was in for. But with it being a horror comedy that I hadn't already seen, and my love of the horror genre, of course I had to give the movie a fair chance.
The storyline, written by James Roberts, is a pretty straightforward one. However, I have to say that it wasn't a particularly impressive storyline, and it was rather devoid of comedy, making it a weak horror comedy. I am sure that newcomers to the horror genre might enjoy "Here for Blood", but as a life-long horror fan, I have to say that writer James Roberts just didn't dazzle me with this script.
The movie starts out as a rather generic home-invasion movie, but takes a rather unexpected turn about halfway through, for better or worse.
I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, which was good, as I do like watching unfamiliar faces and talents on the screen. And the acting performances in "Here for Blood" were adequate. Nothing outstanding or overly memorable, mind you, but definitely adequate for a movie of this caliber.
The effects in the movie were good, and I did like the gore effects and the glowing eyes, those looked really great. And there was actually enough gore and visceral mayhem to keep an old gorehound like myself content, and that was definitely something that spoke well in favor of the movie and helped keeping it afloat.
While "Here for Blood" was watchable, it wasn't exactly a movie that tickled me the right places.
My rating of "Here for Blood" lands on a five out of ten stars.
This movie is called 'Here For Blood' for a reason! If you aren't here for blood, then don't go see this movie because there is plenty of it! If you love blood, gore, makeup effects and a campy 80s horror feel, you will enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised with the great acting and cinematography for such a low budget movie filmed in little London. It has nods to a lot of great horror classics and some laugh out loud moments. I recommend this movie to any true horror fan...Those who don't like it probably aren't actual horror fans and just don't get it. Grab some popcorn and a few friends and just enjoy!
A pro wrestler who fills in for his girlfriend at a babysitting job defends his charge from an evil cult.
It turns out I've seen Shawn Roberts in some stuff, but the name didn't mean anything to me. He was one of the guys who got killed off a bit early in Land of the Dead, which is a pretty awesome job on a resume but not all that memorable. However, he was great here, and I'll probably remember his name now.
This is a splatter comedy full of cheesy lines and gore sfx. I'm not really sure I liked anyone but Roberts and the kid he was babysitting, played by Maya Misaljevic. The scenes between them were great. When other characters intruded, the movie often got a bit dumb.
The bad guys are played with extra camp. Roberts' reactions to them were funny, but I didn't find the bad guys themselves all that funny. I think part of the problem was the writing and directing. The bigger, musclebound guys had some presence and made for appropriate challenges for Roberts, though.
That led to some pretty decent fight choreography, and the fights could get pretty brutal. If you don't like gore, you might want to skip this movie, though it's played for laughs. There are constant geysers of blood, which got a bit silly, but I guess that's unavoidable in a 90s horror homage.
I didn't really feel that all the characters were able to satisfactorily justify their existence. However, Roberts was able to keep things pretty fun, and having lots of characters around meant that the body count could keep piling up. If that's all you really need to enjoy a movie, I'd say this is a good watch.
If you like movies like Dead Alive, Botched, and Evil Dead, it's worth a look.
I think that this movie is supposed to be the kinda movie that's so bad that it's good. But I guess they failed to make it so, cause it's not that funny. I only chuckled a few times. But I didn't laugh at all. Also the blood and gore was really testing my stomach. A fair warning for those who don't have the stomach for excessive gore and blood : don't watch this movie. It's like Quentin Tarantino times 3! Blood spraying in all direction for a minute or two. I think that the title describes the main plot for this movie. Blood, just blood. Maybe vampires can love this movie. But for the rest of us, mortals, we can't. Buh bye!
Here for Blood is a ton of fun. Shawn Roberts absolutely kills it with the awesome one liners while defending a house against a home invasion.
Tom (Roberts) is conned into babysitting by his girlfriend and thus starts the home invasion by a group of mask wearing killers.
The fun starts when Tom encounters the first man in a mask and kicks the loving junk out of him.
What makes this stand out from some other home invasion films is its absurdly funny humor, extremely creepy antagonists and awesomely over the top practical effects.
You find out that this home invasion is to possibly capture the little girl and anyone else is just dead meat. About a third of the way through you will probably guess the reasoning as to why they are doing it but it gets does have some twists and turns... especially when you figure out who is behind it.
Here for Blood is a lot of fun and Shawn Roberts really adds a lot with his cockiness and hilarious one liners through out the film. It also doesn't slow down at all. It's definitely worth watching if you like horror comedies.
I see a lot of glowing reviews for this movie and either we saw a different movie, or I'm on drugs, or all of them are, but I do not agree at all. I think maybe they are all involved in making this movie themselves, or loving family and friends. How else can you justify giving this turkey anything near a 10/10. Seriously these people think this movie is perfect?
I feel like the director must have made this right after watching Dead Alive and walked away from that movie thinking that all you have to do is make a lot of fake blood and spill it everywhere and it automatically makes a movie funny, scary and interesting.
The problem is, Dead Alive was actually a funny script and well shot. It gave us stuff to keep us interested. Here for Blood is a poor excuse for a movie that has no laughs at all in it. We did not even smile once. All we did was keep checking the "time remaining" to see how much longer it would go on. It also was not scary, and the large amounts of obviously fake blood don't add any kind of enjoyment at all, it's just there because they thought it would be automatically interesting somehow.
If anyone told me that someone could somehow make a movie about a home invasion with a wrestler vs. A cult and have it not be one bit funny or good on any level, I would have thought they were crazy. How could this be possible? Yet here it is, a total dud of a movie that practically bored us to sleep.
Some of the actors were decent. But that's about the only good thing I can say about this one. We even hated the music, which I'm sure they either made themselves or got for free.
Horror and/or comedy fans trust me when I say do not waste your time on this one!
What a shame that we can no longer trust the ratings system for smaller independent films. Clearly a lot of the reviews here are people involved in the production.
This is an objectively bad film. The acting - oh my goodness - some of the very worst I've seen outside of film projects. The main actor appears to have wandered in from another film set and is blissfully unaware of the tone of the film he is starring in.
There is a lot of comedy within this film and I really was laughing out loud- but very much at the film and not with it.
Please everyone - can we stop the using the reviews process to market films.
In need of some extra money, a down-on-his-luck wrestler agrees to babysit his girlfriends' younger sister for the night while she studies for an upcoming exam, but when a deadly cult descends upon the house looking for blood he must put his fighting skills to the test to save everyone he cares for.
There's quite a lot to like with this feature. Among the brighter spots here is the film's wildly imaginative setup that provides this with a great opportunity for fun throughout. The main concept of him getting dragged into the babysitting gig is quite fun, making quite heavy use of the concept of him being a male trying to go through the act of babysitting a young girl. This gets brought up throughout the course of the film as his muscle-headed style and good-natured sense of duty conflicts with their more natural sense that try to explain what's going on as the situation spirals out of control involving the purpose behind the cult's appearance at the house and what they're actually doing there. It's all given a great comedic bent with the reactions, one-liners, and over-the-top nature of everything which all sets the film in motion rather well. This setup provides the kind of baseline starting point where the fun of the home invasion produces no shortage of high-energy confrontations. With that comedic bent still in full effect, the confrontations here with the initial members of the cult trying to sneak inside and take her without conflict but get interrupted by the wrestler putting his moves to the test in defending her. This continues with the added bodies being added to the fray as his friends arrive looking to end the night there and get drawn into the mix and then the parents that bring about all kinds of fun here with the series of twists they bring about which not only generates a slew of highly effective gore scenes for the numerous kills but also keeps the film going along as such a frenetic clip that it comes together incredibly well for a lot to like. There isn't much to dislike here but it does have some minor drawbacks. The main factor against the film is that it tends to introduce a few too many elements than it needs to for the type of story this is trying to be. The whole idea of the cult trying to gain immortality through the sacrifice is fine enough, but to constantly try to bring about the importance of the situation with a wise-cracking hero featuring supernatural healing powers just as much as the supernatural regeneration powers of the cult that tends to feel somewhat unnecessary. As well, with the film's heavy focus on the comedic touches not just in the reactions and quips being offered, some of them come off as being scripted rather than being genuine in-the-moment comments so the lessened tension isn't there at the wrong moments. These slight issues are all that keep it down.
Rated Unrated/R: Extreme Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, and children-in-jeopardy.
If you are a fan of Evil Dead, The Lost Boys, Fright Night, Scream, or even Clerks... this movie will have something for you. It's fun(ny), bloody, & campy sexy, and effortless dialogue propels a storyline that is both totally original and nostalgic. Giggle, squirm, and rock out during this artist-lead indie production that just wants to give you a hell of a show - and delivers. Avoiding spoilers: amateur wrestler Tom O'Bannon accepts a babysitting gig to relieve his beloved, Phoebe, of the pressure of work + study during her college exams. A motley crew of cultists descends upon the rural home and Tom must become protector for his innocent ward (Grace), haphazardly punching, elbowing, and chopping their way through a maelstrom of masked marauders - not to understate Phoebe & Grace's crucial contributions. Everything in this movie invites nerddom and deep-dives. Backed by major Canadian talent (writing, acting, tunage) and a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek mischief, Here for Blood revives a much-beloved genre without relying on what's been done before.
Quick question.. Do you like Wrestling, 80's Heavy Metal and low budget Horror?
If you answered no to any of these, maybe this movie isn't for you. Because I don't think you'll get the vibe this film is going for.
Which is fine.. its ok to not like things.
However.. Growing up in the 80's I LOVED all 3 of those things. (there's a 4th thing there too but i don't wanna spoil it) They were all silly and dumb.. but in a really fun way.
Here for Blood is something that teenage me would have watched and rewatched over and over along with 'Army of Darkness', 'They Live' and Judas priest music videos.
Ah, who am I kidding? 40 year old adult me will probably watch and rewatch this one.
The premise of this film is simple.
A bunch of cultists invade a home looking to kill the babysitter and the kid she's looking after.
However the babysitter had to get her Wrestler boyfriend to cover for her so she could cram for a big exam she has the next day.
To say any more about the plot would spoil the fun, so you're just gonna have to trust me when i say that if you like all of the things I mentioned earlier, I think you will be pretty satisfied.
The hero of the movie is a Wrestler who is constantly chugging a beer and dispensing the cultists with Suplex's and other wrestling fight moves. Whist NWOBHM style metal plays.
Shawn Roberts does a great job with the character without going over the top with it.
Some of his line deliveries are pretty funny ("I have an axe" had me laughing out loud) and the rest of the cast do a great job as well.
With Maya Misaljevic doing an excellent job as the kid Roberts is babysitting looking like she's having fun with it (she also gets some pretty good lines) Tara Spencer-Nairn is in this too and she's also great, she delivers her lines in a similar way to how she acted in 'Corner Gas'. Its a style some people may not get, but if you ever watched that show I think you'll know what i mean.
If I were to mark this movie down for anything it would only be that I wish it was done on film.
The shots are excellently staged and the lighting etc are very well done, but come across a little too clean. Maybe even just a filmgrain filter would help it a bit there.
I really want this movie to get a sequel and for it to just ramp it up to 11 because it is the kind of movie I don't think gets made anymore.
Its dorky and silly and a hell of a lot of fun and just gets better and better as it goes on.
Don't pay attention to the negative reviews. This movie is for fans of this specific genre.
I dunno, maybe I'm the only fan of that genre.
.. I'm cool with that. :)
Babysitting, how hard could it be? Find out when pro wrestler Tom fills in on a babysitting job so that his girlfriend, Phoebe, has a chance to study for an exam.
Tom expects a pretty chill evening babysitting Grace. They order pizza and play some video games. Right before Grace's bedtime two intruders enter the house. They just want the girl, but Tom isn't going to let that happen.
Tom and Grace must fight off members of an evil cult. Phoebe and some friends join in on the unexpected fun as the battle the cult members in gory, comedic fashion.
I had never heard of "Here for Blood" prior to viewing it. I was pleasantly surprised.
Rocker Dee Snider of Twisted Sister is the voice of the head.
