Bitter Art

I randomly saw this film at the Beijing Festival, and found it to be a very unique flavor of comedy that is in a great contrast to most other indie comedies that's out there. The film dealt with certain global themes but contained a singularly unique Australian sensibility that made it feel different somehow. The lead actor did a superb job, and there were plenty of unorthodox side characters that had well written dialogue to perform. The cinematography and sound design I particularly enjoyed, although it was a well put together film in all regards, which speaks of the talents of the director. All in all a great flick that I hope will be picked up for distribution and seen by more people.

This film showcases the beautiful scenery in the south west of WA and also shows that a low budget does not have to mean low quality. The film has great characters and bucket loads of laughs. Contributing to the flavor of this film is the distinctly Australian dialog and interaction between the characters. Bitter Art is probably the best introduction for visitors from overseas to learn about Australia since The Odd Angry Shot. For instance there is the ability to finish your beer on the way from the bar to your table, or bartering services for beer; both distinctly Australian. And then there is the six foot tall chicken....

saw bitter art at the oz film festival in Sydney this year, because of so many films i try and whittle it down to 3, was glad i picked this one. Personally i think oz films are lacking in character/script depth as shown in most recent(this year) oz dramas,comedies etc same old actors/actresses rehashed in new roles but not surprisingly different from their old ones(no names mentioned but not hard to work out) Bitter Art is definitely a breath of fresh air. Developed characters, great Aussie dialog, set in beautiful rural w.a. and most importantly an awesome oz soundtrack which sets up a interesting opening scene with plenty of hilarious incidents through out the movie-the dude in the chicken suit popping up at the most odd times, you could make a spin off alone on that Apart from me laughing regularly i found that Bitter Art dealt with one of the toughest personal issues of envy and one man's quest to put it aside and learn to trust his own talent even though it takes him awhile to find it. Anyways since that film i have checked out and put the asap films website on favorites and have liked what i've seen so far, i look forward to future projects from asap as the Australian Film Industry really needs a kick in the bum and Bitter Art is a start. I typically rent Indie films with little expectation on enjoying them. That being said, a friend of mine suggested I watch Bitter Art because the humor might be right up my alley. After the first time I watched this film (rented it) I decided this was one I had to add to my movie collection. I immediately purchased it and have been telling my friends how much I enjoyed the humor and the beautiful Western Australian landscapes. Beyond those, the cinematography and the soundtrack were something that were a major plus to this film, as it is a memorable film due to beautiful landscapes and catchy tunes. This film was an utter joy to watch, and I cant wait to see more from Director Michael Hatch!
