A remake of a sci-fi classic that currently holds a 77% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes has been quietly dominating streaming ahead of its finale. Sci-fi TV shows have always performed well on streaming services. One of the most popular is Stranger Things, which has broken records for Netflix. Stranger Things season 5 is expected to be just as successful.
Other successful sci-fi shows have included adaptations of classic books in the genre. The ongoing Foundation season 3 on Apple TV+, for example, bends elements of Issac Asimov's stories to fit a TV narrative. Others have included more Star Wars franchise shows and, for more recent source material, Silo. But there's one adaptation of a classic novel secretly dominating streaming.

The more you lie to people, the more they turn away from you. That’s exactly what Nemo learns in Nautilus season 1, episode 8.
Caution: This post contains Spoilers for Nautilus season 1, episode 8.
After putting lives at risk, the crew of the Nautilus have finally had enough. It doesn’t help that Humility makes the choice to call Nemo out on his wrong calculations in front of everyone rather than talk to him quickly in private.
You see, Nemo thinks they have enough air for six days under the ice, and it will take five days to get through. Humility has worked out that they only have enough air for three days, so they need to turn back. Nemo doesn’t want to do that, and it leads to mutiny on the Nautilus.
Nautilus/Series 1. (L to R) Ashan Kumar as Ranbir, Georgia Flood as Humility, Celine Menville as Loti in Nautilus.

The theme of Nautilus episode 8 is one of trust and mending relationships. It’s been touched on in other episodes, but there’s still work the Nautilus crew needs to do.
Youngblood questions Millais about why he played alongside Nemo in the game and then sends a message about where the Nautilus is heading to Crowley. Millais remains silent. We know he believes Nemo ruined his life.
Beneath the arctic ice, the Nautilus crew grows disillusioned with Nemo, who is obsessed with getting to London to exact revenge. They pass frozen shipwrecks with crews who look asleep rather than dead for many years. Their fear leads to a discussion of mutiny and, when Nemo cannot be convinced to change course, they take action.
Boniface Adamu takes the captaincy but not without a fight. He confines Nemo to his cabin and then turns the Nautilus around.
Pacharo Mzembe as Boniface in Nautilus.

AMC+ has been thriving lately, between the premiere of Shazad Latif's acclaimed swashbuckling 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea prequel series Nautilus and the return of The Walking Dead: Dead City for Season 2 back in May. While both have been streaming favorites since their release, they were recently challenged by an unexpected horror anthology. In the past week, 2019's The Mortuary Collection had overtaken the Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan-led spin-off series on the platform's streaming charts, ranking as high as fifth overall. Notably, it features one of Hollywood's brightest young stars, Jacob Elordi, in a starring role, making it a fitting watch ahead of his latest horror role in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein.
The Mortuary Collection made its debut at Fantastic Fest in 2019 to rave reviews before coming to Shudder for the spooky season in 2020. As the name suggests, it features a collection of creepy stories...

Captain Nemo is a complicated man driven more by revenge and finding treasure than being heroic. But he's growing into the role of hero little by little. The newest episode, "Cold War," shows us how he’s becoming more compassionate and willing to compromise.
The Nautilus reaches the Arctic and the crew break out blankets and jackets. Nemo gifts Benoit’s compass to Humility moments before the Dreadnought’s cannons begin blasting. The chase is on, with both captains pushing their ships recklessly, but both end up lodged in thick ice.
The Nautilus has a broken bolt, and they need a forge to repair it. They don’t have one but their nemesis does.

A stacked murder mystery cast, a human-dog tearjerker, and a James Gunn series… August’s looking real good.
There’s a ton hitting the streamers this month, and August might be one of the strongest lineups we’ve seen in a while. There’s another big Prime Video action comedy I can’t wait to watch (they’ve been on fire lately), plus a new James Gunn series I’ll definitely be checking out after loving “Superman.” And while my taste usually leans more comedy, this month’s picks range from high-seas revenge stories to true-crime thrillers to sci-fi prequels from one of the most famous horror franchises ever. So if you’re looking for something fresh to stream, here are the shows and movies I’m seriously pumped about in August.

While the first episode of Nautilus was a little slow, it quickly picked up in action and drama. There’s no doubt that this story needs to continue.
In some great news, the AMC numbers are great. Cinema Blend reports that the show is a surprising success for AMC, although I don’t know why it’s a surprise. The show was a lot of fun for British viewers when it premiered at the end of 2024.
Despite the success on AMC, it’s possible that Nautilus season 2 won’t happen. This all comes down to the fact that it wasn’t originally created for the American network.

Prime Video's new thriller series The Assassin debuted to an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score among critics, but it's proving extremely divisive among viewers. The Assassin stars Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard) and Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor) as a retired assassin and her estranged son. It's one of the best thriller on Prime Video, and now The Assassin has a Rotten Tomatoes score to prove it.
The Assassin's Rotten Tomatoes score currently stands at 90% among 10 critics. The Assassin has only been released in the United Kingdom, but British and Australian critics mostly agree that it's a well-made thriller with engrossing performances from both Hawes and Highmore. While many critics noted that the show has some implausible twists and changes in tone, they mostly agree that it works.
The Assassin's audience score is a different story, though. At the time of writing, The Assassin season 1 has just 28% among about 50 viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Episode 6 of Nautilus, "The Big Blue," is a bit of an escapade with a lot of action and investigation. Relationships aboard the Nautilus are becoming more complicated, particularly between Nemo and Humility. Plus, one can't go wrong in July with big sharks, right?
Now that the Nautilus is moving away from the ring of fire, things cool off enough for the crew to snap out of their fugue. Once they realize Humility isn’t with them, they turn the ship around to find her before she runs out of air.
We see another new invention from Benoit: a defibrillator. A fun fact is that the defibrillator was invented in 1899, 42 years after the events of Nautilus. I like that Nemo acknowledges that Humility saved them all. He does have an occasional humble moment.
The dreadnought continues pursuing the Nautilus. Even though they’ve lost the sound signal, Crawley believes they are still close.

Star Trek: Discovery actor Shazad Latif has found redemption in the seafaring adventure series Nautilus after having a controversial run with Discovery. The Amazon Prime Video series has reportedly been at the top of the charts at AMC+, which is an add-on channel for the streamer, for the month of July, coming above shows like Hell Motel and Push (via Flix Patrol).
While the show has received mixed responses from critics, with a 77% Rotten Tomatoes score, it seems to have gained a new lease of life on AMC+ with its chart-topping performance. This is a big win for Latif, who was known for his role as Ash Tyler in Discovery.
While Discovery has been divisive for fans (especially with shows like Strange New Worlds doing a better job at being Star Trek), Latif’s character underwent a significant transformation, which eliminated some incredible parts of his character.

Last year, at the Academy Awards, Christopher Nolan’s mind-blowing biographical thriller Oppenheimer was the standout winner of the night, with one of the film's most coveted prizes going the way of the ever-loveable and incredibly talented Cillian Murphy. However, this well-deserved rise to the top of the acting tree simply wouldn't have been possible without one of the Irish actor's best early roles as Jim in 28 Days Later, alongside Naomie Harris and Brendan Gleeson.
Directed by Danny Boyle and penned by Alex Garland, the groundbreaking horror movie would revolutionize the zombie genre forever, without actually featuring any of the iconic monsters. Followed several years later by the Jeremy Renner-led 28 Weeks Later, it would take until this summer before the pulse-racing franchise was brought back to life with 28 Years Later, set to be the first in a trilogy followed swiftly by 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta.

It’s up to Humility to save the day in Nautilus season 1 episode 5, but who will save Humility? And is there any way to counteract an infection?
Caution: This post contains Spoilers for Nautilus season 1 episode 5.
Nautilus season 1 episode 4 left the crew of the submarine in grave danger. An electric eel had wrapped itself around them, and it was dragging them down to the depths of the ocean. Well, we pick right back up with that, with Humility trying to figure out a way to fire back.
A flashback of Humility at the French college for boys that she’d previously said she attended kicks off her storyline. She’s sure that she can work out impossible puzzles, and this one with the Nautilus is certainly an impossible one. However, she starts to doubt herself when shocking the eel back doesn’t seem to work.

The title of this episode, "Anguille Fumée," is interesting. It can mean a smokey environment and also is a French smoked eel dish.
This is my least favorite episode of the show so far. It starts out with excitement, witty commentary, and action. However, as events with Archie the dog progress, the remaining portion of the episode is slow going.
We begin with a flashback to Humility attending university in France, disguised as a male and calling herself Marchand. She wears a fake mustache! We learn a bit more about Loti’s role in her life. I love how Loti describes herself as “a devil in a dress.” We are also introduced to Humility’s mother, who arranged the marriage with Pitt.
Back in the present, the Nautilus is struggling with the gigantic electric eel wound around its hull. The huge eye staring into the view window is a bit creepy.

Sometimes, the safety of the boat is best. That’s what Humility learns in Nautilus season 1 episode 4.
Caution: This post contains Spoilers for Nautilus season 1 episode 4.
After finding out that some islands harbor dangerous people, Nemo’s crew learns that some islands harbor dangerous creatures. Nautilus season 1 episode 4 leads the crew to a new island in search for food and water, but they end up in another life-threatening situation.
Of course, they need to get out of the situation with the Dreadnought firing harpoons at them first. That leads to Nemo swimming out (without a suit) to smash the glass on the bottom of the Dreadnought to at least get everyone out of the harpoon room. It’s not enough to take down the Dreadnought, but it’s a start.

Episode 4 of Nautilus, "Slippery When Wet" begins with the Nautilus again facing down the pursuing dreadnought. The dreadnought fires upon the Nautilus and intentionally misses, although the explosion still rocks the ship. Once again, a reckless Nemo leaves the Nautilus, this time without a diving suit. He swims over and takes an axe to the turret on the dreadnought. Upon breaking it he is thrown back from the resulting blast.
Billy Millais (Luke Arnold) has flashbacks to his shared childhood with Nemo, when the both of them were bullies by classmates. I’m curious to see if he ever switches sides. At times, he is bothered by the racism of the company men, but then he does his job when needed.
Nemo is rescued and revived back on the Nautilus. The damage inflicted on the dreadnought buys them time to make it out of the bay.

AMC's Nautilus had the network's most-watched premiere since the best spinoff of The Walking Dead premiered over a year ago. Shazad Latif leads the cast of Nautillus as Captain Nemo, the iconic character from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Nautilus easily draws comparisons to Pirates of the Caribbean, and it may be just as much of a hit.

Jules Verne is arguably the father of science fiction with his 1870 classic novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with the enigmatic anti-hero Captain Nemo, and his fantastical submarine the Nautilus. This sweeping tale of advanced technology, revenge, and political intrigue is set in the late 19th Century. It tackles the maritime conflict between man, nature, and how the ocean's resources could be overexploited.
AMC+ has adapted this seafaring novel into a mini-series called Nautilus (2024), which stars Shazad Latif as its helmsman, Captain Nemo. In the AMC+ series, Shazad portrays an Indian prince (Prince Dakkar), under British colonialism is enslaved. Unlike the Jules Verne version, Nemo and a few of his loyalists pull off a daring coup and steal the Nautilus, while taking on some unwanted crew, and set out into the open sea.

At the end of the previous episode, the Nautilus was trapped by a giant squid near the ocean floor. It prevents them from surfacing by wrapping its body around the ship and holding fast with tentacle suckers. As it squeezes, the ship's metal hull groans and parts fall off.
Nemo, reckless as ever, puts on a diving suit and exits to try and scare it off. His spear gun is no match for it. However, mama whale shows up and rescues the Nautilus. Perhaps the whales are going to be a recurring thing.
Meanwhile, the Nautilus is still being pursued by the dreadnought, but it escapes by firing a torpedo filled that makes a lot of noise. Both ships have men monitoring ocean sounds. The dreadnought officer picks up on the torpedo, so they give chase. Meanwhile, the Nautilus fires its engines and flees. Crawley is disgusted at falling for the ruse.
Nemo, reckless as ever, puts on a diving suit and exits to try and scare it off. His spear gun is no match for it. However, mama whale shows up and rescues the Nautilus. Perhaps the whales are going to be a recurring thing.

Last Sunday, AMC premiered the period adventure drama Nautilus. A loose reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, this version of the titular submarine is the handiwork of labor by inmates enslaved in a private prison by the East India Mercantile Company, which in the mid-19th century is more powerful than any government. One such inmate is the man who helped its official engineer design the craft, and who becomes its captain: Nemo.

A full beard can’t entirely hide his face: yes, that’s Shazad Latif, better known to fans of the Matt Berry sitcom Toast of London as the titular toast’s most impish nemesis, Clem Fandango. But if the rest of this paragraph just looks like Mad Libs, here are five reasons to get up to speed…...

It's not often that you find a film with an impeccable 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Such has been the appeal and success of AMC+'s modern Western series Dark Winds. Created by Graham Roland and based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, Dark Winds has been one of AMC+’s most successful original series since its debut in 2022. Set in the 1970s American Southwest, the show centers on Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) as they investigate crimes deeply entangled with Native traditions and personal trauma.
However, in the world of streaming charts, with its potential for volatility, Dark Winds has found itself knocked down a couple of pegs on the streaming charts. The unexpected challenger? The Book of Eli, the 2010 Denzel Washington-led post-apocalyptic action film that’s suddenly enjoying a second wind. The renewed interest in The Book of Eli isn...

AMC+'s modern Western series Dark Winds has been a major success since its debut in 2022. As fans await a new season, Dark Winds has remained in the charts despite Season 3 ending in late April.
However, the hit Western show is slowly losing its position. Per FlixPatrol, Dark Winds has fallen two positions, and has exchanged places with a 15-year-old Denzel Washington movie: the post-apocalyptic film The Book of Eli. The film has been steadily rising the charts on AMC+, and has replaced Dark Winds in the seventh spot.
The adventure series Nautilus topped the charts, replacing The Walking Dead: Dead City. They were followed by the new limited series Hell Motel, and the sci-fi horror Ash. In fifth place there was the crime thriller Neighborhood Watch, the second Jeffrey Dean Morgan title in the Top 10, a film that reunited him with The Boys star Jack Quaid. In sixth place...

To say that there have been a lot of adaptations of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea would be an understatement. Since 1907, there have been countless movies, TV shows, and animated productions that have all put their own spin on the classic novel. Now, a British adaptation has taken the streaming charts by storm, nabbing the top spot on AMC+. Titled Nautilus, the ten-part series began airing on June 29, and if you're a fan of action adventure dramas, this is one that should be on your radar.
Starring Shazad Latif as Captain Nemo, Nautilus presents fans with an origin story about everyone's favorite Indian prince-turned-crusading scientist. Unlike Verne's novel, which gives very little away in terms of Nemo's backstory, here we see him as a Colonial prisoner in 1866 who helps build the titular ship. After a planned uprising, he takes control of the Nautilus and...
