Turned it off

I gave this about 15 to 20 minutes, in which there is very little dialogue and what dialogue there is, is so dragged out it became ridiculous. It took at times a full minute for a character to get out one word and then another. I had no idea what was going on, and didn't care as there is no character development. Actors would just stand in a room looking around. A man takes off his shirt , that took a few minutes but felt like half an hour. I guess this was trying to be something arty but it's just nonsense. I wasn't even curious to see where it was going because I had to force myself just to suffer through the first 15 minutes. Don't bother. The ratings on this have nosedived as the real reviews are posted.

Mesmerising

Compelling throughout and I'm still sitting here mulling over it all.

Thrilling and suspenseful throughout with brilliant shots, sublimely lit, and the sound and score by Fernando Gemeno was perfect.

Lovely profile shot of Dylan Baldwin was reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's entrance to The Funeral March of the Marionnettes from his television series.

Brilliant and imaginative 'off the wall' writing from Ignacio Maiso and yet again, Rebecca Calienda captivates with her truly great acting.

Can't wait for the next picture from Tractorni Productions.

Certainly worthy of another screening - gonna do that now.

Stylish Indie with a killer score

For anyone already familiar with Ignacio Maiso's work, you'll know not to expect a storyline that gifts you answers, nor one that has you celebrating for having guessed the ending after 12 minutes... Instead, you'll likely be challenged to piece some of his stories together yourself, and The Girl with the Fork is no different.

It is a clearer narrative than some of his earlier movies (Them, The Consultant), cleverly jumping between timelines, but it will still leave you guessing until the very end.

If you're looking for a high octane, big budget Friday night movie epic then this won't be the right choice for you, but for those of you keen to engage with a more thought-provoking slow-burn, this is certainly one of the better options out there.

With strong lead performances by Rebecca Calienda and Paul Dewdney, and a perfectly composed score by Fernando Gimeno, this beautifully shot thriller is a fine example of UK independent film making and what can be achieved with low-to-no budget.

Love it

This is a wonderfully intriguing, thought provoking suspense from Ignacio Maiso that has all the brilliant hallmarks that define his directorial and writing talents. I've worked with him before starring in Prowler. His intentional use of light, shadow, stillness, metaphor and music along with rhythm and texture create the intensity in this feature that perfectly rides on the waves of his unmistakablely creative storyline. It breathes carrying the viewer to unknown outcomes until they are discovered. Then it comes together like act 4 of a dramatic opera. Much applause for this strong cast too. Well done!

Tense drama with a quirky vibe

The film really nails the suspense, with a plot that slowly unravels each character's secrets. But it can drag a bit and gets a little too convoluted in spots. Even so, it's a solid pick for anyone into indie feeling suspenseful dramas. The soundtrack is a highlight that totally amp up the tension and match the film's quirky feel.

There's a couple really lynchesque on steroids tracks in there. The cast does a great job, bringing the characters to life as the plot takes its twists and turns. Pacing can be challenging, especially the camera work that often chooses to stay put and linger for ages on a framing, but overall, I think it's a really solid effort.

The Girl with the Fork

An Impressive slow burn indie drama thriller with a real sense of style. Keeps you guessing. Keeps you thinking.

The story intertwines between married couple Anna and Mike played by Rebecca Calienda and Dylan Baldwin and father and daughter Paul and Celia played by Paul Dewdney and Francesca Hayman.

They are all interlinked by this mysterious group contacting them in various ways and pulling the strings and, well, a fork...

If you're after some kind of fast paced hollywood flick that spoon feeds you the plot then this probably won't be for you but if you're in the mood for something a little different and you have an attention span of more then a few minutes it's well worth a look.

Some great measured and thoughtful performances from the actors, an intriguing story and a brilliant score.

Suspenseful cocktail

An intriguing story by Ignacio, exploring people's lives and blending them into a suspenseful cocktail, which the film effectively builds upon. While the pace could pick up in some scenes to enhance the sense of progression, it's a solid choice for fans of suspenseful indie dramas. The soundtrack is impressive-though occasionally overused-but lands well when it counts. There's some terrific lighting and a surprising use of color that adds to the visual appeal.

On the technical side, the sound could have been polished a bit more, but those minor indie-film quirks are easily overlooked, as they don't detract from the experience.

Terrific imagery by Matthew J. Hicks, accompanied by great music from Fernando Gimeno.

Ignacio Maiso stylish psychological thriller where David Lynch meets Luis Buñuel

Ignacio Maiso stylish psychological thriller where David Lynch meets Luis Buñuel.

Maiso through his filmic language, uses the screen as a canvas to paint tense situations and tell an intriguing story.

An excellent cast, the actors convey much with minimal dialogue, they live and move in a stage like dimension, sculptured by contrasting colors and alternating light and shadow, they navigate the depth and breath of the story with elegance and skill.

The music score effectively underlines emotions, sets the tone and supports the actor's performance.

An interesting and yet enjoyable film to watch.

A great movie

A surprising very good movie! I watched this expecting the usual cliches but there were a few surprising twists. It's a compelling, mysterious and a journey into the unknown. It will leave the viewers thinking hard.

Ignacio and Alex have created a world that will leave the viewer astonished and wandering. I've had to watch it again and again and it still leaves me wandering.

A feast for all the senses. Would highly recommended this stylised indie film.

A glimpse into a world that will leave your heart racing and your mind ticking.

A very good movie all round. I would definitely recommend this film.

Deep Slow burn

Great little thriller that's a slow burning, intriguing plot.. with a disturbing end game.. When a husband goes missing, a wife is left wondering why.. and who is leaving messages?

A film that is constantly twisting your perception of what is now, and was it ever so.

For a low budget film, the director has delivered a tale that will leave you vexed.

Acting good, cinematography benignly hides the budget. A true filmmakers film, not for the faint hearted.

Looking forward to seeing what the production company has next up its sleeve. Check out the back catalogue for other titles.

What's could this team do with a proper budget?

Discombobulation plus Wes Cravens 'Scream' leaves you on High!

Excellent cinematography with a fabulous colour scheme and perfect score!

The superb cast deliver nuance performances which allows the viewer space to unfold the unique narrative of this original storyline.

A great take on the horror genre had elements for me of Wes Cravens 'Scream' and Claire Denis's 'High Life'.

The wide shots used in the film give the sense of isolation and being 'viewed' 'observed' at all times but by who?... The static nature in some of the shots also muddy's the films timeline which adds to the characters sense of discombobulation.

Its a great take on how we are all now constantly watched, recorded, and readily and easily manipulated.

Keep and eye out for your own red box!

Intriguing & Mysterious - Very Stylish

An intriguing, convoluted, deep, emotional and mysterious story. Really nice individual and sensitive performances particularly from Rebecca Calienda, Dylan Baldwin and Paul Dewdney, delightful lighting and cinematography by Matthew Hicks, and superb script writing and direction from Ignasio Maiso. If you don't want your thriller/drama stories spoon-fed then this is definitely one for you, it'll have you thinking for days afterwards! All in all, an excellent film, very stylish and thought provoking; I first watched it on the film festival circuit, I'm delighted that I discovered this low-budget movie gem.

From the Chief-Film Critic of the Lonely Wolf International Film Festival (London)

In a stunning triumph at this year's Lonely Wolf International Film Festival, Ignacio Maiso's "The Girl with the Fork" (2024) claimed the coveted Best Thriller award, while also securing 2nd Place for Best British Film. This labyrinthine psychological thriller, penned and directed by Maiso, has been lauded for its intricate narrative and atmospheric storytelling. Rebecca Calienda's mesmerizing performance as Anna earned her a well-deserved nomination for Best Lead Actress, with critics comparing her nuanced portrayal to Florence Pugh's work in "Don't Worry Darling". The film's success is further bolstered by Paul Dewdney's powerful supporting role and the haunting score composed by Fernando Gimeno. Cinematographer Matthew J. Hicks deserves special mention for his evocative visual style, which transforms the surroundings into a character of their own. "The Girl with the Fork" stands as a testament to the strength of British independent cinema, weaving themes of guilt, memory, and retribution into a complex tapestry that continues to captivate audiences and spark discussions long after the credits roll. With this critical acclaim, Maiso cements his reputation as one of the most exciting directors of his generation, proving once again that he is the undisputed master of slow-burn, labyrinthine thrillers.

Excellent indie film

This film had me hooked! The idea for the film is quite intriguing.

I loved following the characters and trying to work out how they were all connected. The twists and turns along the way keep you guessing. The cast put in a great performance and the final result looks a lot better than you would expect for a film working with it's limited budget.

It is wonderfully produced and it has a sleek and stylish feel to it. The colour palette works well and the sound production is great. I am looking forward to the other films that the production team, and the director, will make in the future. 10 stars!!

Compelling and mysterious

Much enjoyed this indie film. It is compelling and mysterious, leaving you wondering. A glimpse into the unknown that explores a twisted game that will leave the viewer questioning what is happening.

A glimpse into a family with secrets and much to hide. Twisted intentions that that come to the fore that are cleverly put together. A feast for the senses that will leave you wanting to watch more and more again.

A good plot with well cast characters. The mysterious group leaves you with questions.

I highly recommend this film for those interested in psychological thrillers. Certainly one to watch.

Wow Great Movie

I purchased this last weekend on Amazon based on a reccomendation from a friend, I'm glad I did! What a truly brilliant film, but don't take your eyes off the screen for a second, you wont anyway as you'll be transfixed and drawn into the story in a flash - The plot twists and turns and at times goes off at bizarre tangents, but of course all comes together concludes in a very emotional conclusion. I absolutely loved the soundtrack too - The actors to a man and woman were all superb and come together in a beautful emotional and far reaching drama-dance. 100% my kind of film where I'm left to make my own conclusions; highly recommended 10/10.
