sneaks up on the viewer ... and KA-BOOM

Writer slash director Lexi Alexander keeps making her resume more and more diverse, and this entry certainly will not hurt.

The most spectacular achievement here is that she achieves something even the best directors in Hollywood would kill for -- she takes the viewer completely by surprise at the 3/4 point in the film, with a twist only psychics and mediums could have seen coming.

No small feat, that.

The film has flaws here and there but overall it engages almost from the first scene and hold your attention. Again, no small feat, that.

Regional singer Todd Simpson is cast as a competing singer in the story and adds sparkle, virtually stealing all his scenes.

Recommended.

Very Good Movie

This is a movie that has one of the most compelling stories i've ever seen. It deals with so many topics and issues and yet its not too broad either. I was amazed at the entertaining story, great soundtrack, good acting, and overall quality of the film. The story is really where this film hits home though. Covering an array of different topics and issues while not being one bit too broad or preachy this movie is a film worth watching. Though not everything is "perfect" this movies quality and heartfelt story makes it almost impossible not to pass up anything that would give it a low rating. Watch it you'll be amazed.

**id also like to note how happy I was that this good of a movie was so "clean" of "questionable content.**

Wow two thumbs up

Obviously lacking a significant budget, but wholly cow. This film hit home, as my wife and I are both from Army families. It is centered on a redeployed Marine, and the troubles his family deals with at home in his absence. Very slow at first, but it really takes off about mid-way. I am not ashamed to say that I that lump in my throat, and the water in my eyes more than made up for the slowness, and lack of high dollar fancy stuff. The writers/producers/directors nailed a wonderful movie on the head, and it is absolutely worth watching. The characters were selected, and played quite well, and man, that little guy can sing. The end of the movie, was one of the most powerful tributes I think I've ever seen, and the dedication was perfect. I can't say it enough, that this little film is a must see.

Great family movie, good tribute to our Soldiers

Heartfelt, entertaining and very sweet. Starts out a little slow, but quickly catches your attention. Rather than keeping you on the edge of your seat with anticipation, Lifted takes a closer look at the passion behind the music, and, more importantly, gives a glimpse into the life of a soldier's family. There was no profanity, no scanty clothes, and no innuendos, which is probably why it hasn't gotten much attention. This is safe to watch with any audience. The purpose of Lifted might have been to show viewers something of what soldiers sacrifice every day, and they did it beautifully. The song "Letters from Home" came to mind several times. Definitely worth watching. Do come prepared with Kleenex.

Excellent Movie

I thought this movie was extraordinary, this tells a story of an extreme overcome of adversity and details the hardships that families of service members must endure. This is not a movie for someone who does not want to cry because even though I usually never cry from movies this one just struck a cord with me since I have family serving in the military and these can happen to them as well. This movie also has some amazing music in it as you will see if you watch it, very cool and I find myself listening to the soundtrack now as well. This is definitely worth a watch, its very good. I really liked the fathers lyrics they are very deep and have such deep meaning you would never expect from a movie.

Never forget our fallen heroes.

Hallmark cards class of movie

The Hallmark Hall of Fame TV series has original movies that are all touchy-feely, family, warm, stories. They used to be 7/10 movies (my rating) going back up to several years ago but of late they rarely rank above 6/10 or 2½/4 stars.

This movie's theme is similar to the Hallmark films except Lifted is not well written nor is it edited well. The acting is very good. Sometime during the last 10 minutes of the movie they must have decided to change the ending. That's fine except they forgot to go back and edit out the scenes that no longer made sense with the new ending.

I do not want to add spoilers here but should you watch this film and when the surprise comes into the script near the end think of how events of 15 minutes earlier no longer make sense.

Even without this editing lapse I doubt I'd rate this movie much higher than 6/10.

Great Movie! You MUST watch!

I have watched this movie several times. After finding this film on Netflix, I loved it so much, I found some copies on Amazon and bought 4 copies to give away. The acting was done beautifully, the singing was awesome, and the reality behind a family's emotional life in the absence of they're beloved service member is so right on point. WOW! That kid can really sing! You will find yourself falling for that kid and rooting for him too. The real love he and his dad share in the film is just amazing! This movie is one of my top three favorites now. What a great tribute to our wonderful troops. There is no greater spirit than the one from our precious American Soldier. This movie provides a glimpse of that...and the end? One of the GREATEST endings ever and completely unpredictable.

No words to describe how bad it is...

I saw this movie with no expectations, but i was at least waiting for something watchable, but oh my...

This is probably the worst movie i saw in the last 10 years, i could say the acting is awful, but awful isn't quite the word to describe it. I just hope someone takes my advice and avoid losing 100 minutes of your precious life.

There's nothing good about this movie... The kid isn't a wonder-kid, it doesn't sing all that well. The dad is laughable because it's a military hip hop wannabe, it's makes Vanilla Ice look like 2pac.

There's a lot more i could say, but i want to forget about this very soon, so i will say no more...

Awesome movie!!!

This movie was the best movie that I have seen in a very long time. It will definitely make you cry. I really enjoyed the music as well. All I can say is that this is a must see movie. I really can't even say enough about this movie without giving it away. I have it on netflix and everyone that comes over, I make them watch it with me. After watching it, they walk away feeling a little better about their life and a little sadder for all of the men and women who are still left fighting for our country. I will continue to pray for the safe return for our brave men and women who are still fighting for our country. This movie just goes to show the world how children are affected by the death of their loved ones. It doesn't seem fair that these children have to go through such a tragedy at a very young age. My deepest sympathy goes out to these children.

What an excellent movie

I do not know where to begin. Since I only have a few words that can be posted. Let me say that this movie was quite a tearful watch for my wife and I. As with most other reviews, I too will say that the last 20 min of the movie was most likely, the greatest ending to a movie that EVER came out of Hollywood. Unbelievable. I would love to buy a bunch and include them free with every single purchase of my customers. I have never enjoyed a heart felt movie such as this. Most of, it is about time that someone acknowledged the our brothers and sisters fighting to keep America free. If you have any decency about you, this is a movie worth watching. WITH THE ENTIRE FAMILY. It all comes together at the end.

lives up to it's name

I had never heard of this movie, so didn't know what to expect. I love music and am a military Mom, so with both themes involved in the movie, it was particularly close to my heart. This movie proves to me that it doesn't take big name stars to make a quality, well acted movie. The storyline particularly highlights the plights of military families and how their lives are affected when their loved ones are deployed. People who do not have family in the military may come away from the movie with a better understanding of what military families experience. There are multiple themes within the story, including drug usage, abuse, spirituality, family cohesiveness, etc. I do not think it would be appropriate for younger children,as although the talent of the young star in the movie is inspiring, the seriousness of particular elements may be better served by more mature audiences. In summary, I highly recommend this movie. It is well worth your time, will touch you, will make you want to hug your loved ones afterwards. It really will make you feel lifted and that is how I personally want to feel after watching movies.

for a good - no, great - cry PLEASE see this movie.

"Lifted" is a movie I knew nothing about. Now, I would love the whole world to know about it. It is an unashamed tear-jerker - a story that moves warmly along as it covers a variety of items - there are bullies, there is drug addiction and a few other negatives. On the positive side there is family love. The boy and his parents exude pure love.

And, there is talent. Lots of boys and girls roaming the silver screen, but none can hold a candle to the star of this movie. Mom, dad, the preacher, Mr. S and the unbilled Trace Adkins are all magnificent. One great scene is the one with Trace and the boy's grandfather.

All are great scenes in a movie with a gf - for great family - rating. Sure, it is a low budget job, but for heart and entertainment it cannot be equaled or beaten.

One more note. It is also a tribute to our servicemen and women, particularly the Marines. I'm ex-Army, but while the marines are the focus, you will see a beautiful tribute, especially to those who have lost their lives in 'our' behalf.

One of the most aspiring movies I've seen! 10 stars!!

The story outline was a bit mixed up. I really didn't like the free hand camera feel towards the end when the talent competition occurred. The lead character can sing but I believe audio techs could have done a better job engineering the sound with various location settings. The lead characters were hip, but their acting felt real.

I give this movie two thumbs up because it stirred my emotions.

I am member of the US Armed Forces and I felt the emotion that was contrasted by the lead characters.

The story climaxed at a great timing. The resolution to the climax was set greatly. The lighting was good, audio was good.

I took the time to write this brief review to tell those who have not seen it, to watch it. It is a great movie! Also though it was not marketed very much according to my knowledge, I have watched it on Netflix.

Thanks for reading.

And for the producers and directors that were involved, great flick!

Continue to do more... Just tighten up on some technical aspects of the movie...

Lifted my spirits high!

Lifted was a great movie!! It was like a hidden treasure that appeared in my movie file as a recommendation. Great suggestion! I watched the film 3-4 times.

The movie has a great storyline. The main character, Henry Matthews, is facing the challenges of being a tween growing up in the South. Nevertheless, he has a strong bond with his father and pastor in the community. Though the Matthews family is financially poor, they are rich in love and talent. The family faces real-life issues and overcomes obstacles with faith, music and unity.

The story is uplifting, and the musical talent is great! I highly recommend this movie for anyone, especially for veterans and even families with children 10+ years.

Uplifting and Meaningful

I have watched this movie 5 times in the last two months. I have had everyone who comes to my home watch it! This movie inspires me to thank every military member I see in my path! It has a twist in the storyline which makes it unpredictable and entertaining. It touches deep to many people with addictions, loss of family members and abuse! Life struggles are a common thread we all share and this story touches on them and gives hope. My five year old loves to sing along and I am floored by Henry's amazing voice! I hope to see him go far with his singing career. I don't recognize these actors but I believe they did a wonderful job in their roles. I felt sadness, anger, happiness, worry, hope and love. Great movie! Thank you

Inspiring

Henry is a middle school student who enjoys singing while his mechanic father William raps. His mother Lisa has been sober for more than a year and rides her bicycle to meetings.

For some reason Henry is harassed by bullies at school. One day he is running from the other boys and sees a church as a place where he can escape. Pastor Johnson lets him stay in the church and runs the other boys out, and he listens to Henry sing. Henry is quite talented, and most of his songs have a Christian message.

William gets a letter calling him back into service. Even though he served in Iraq, he is a reservist who can be called back, and this time he will serve in Afghanistan. Lisa isn't sure she can cope, but she is willing to try.

The problems for this family include the fact that the army doesn't pay as much as a civilian job. Lisa and Henry must move in with her abusive, racist father, who despite living in Honey Boo Boo's neighborhood seems to think "ghetto" is a bad thing. Henry's grandfather gets very angry if the boy listens to or performs that garbage. Also, the man next door wants to not only hit on Lisa but give her a "hit", if you know what I mean. She tries to resist, and she tries looking for a job, but life is hard.

There may be a way out. Henry learns of an "American Idol" type competition for Alabama teenagers.

Can Henry make it to the competition? Will he win? He certainly has the talent. The judges include country superstar Jimmy Knox, a redneck named Bubba (at least I think that was his name) and an uppity white woman. And Henry's musical taste isn't exactly what one would expect from a white boy from Alabama.

I won't give away the ending, but this movie honors those who serve our country in a very moving way.

The leading actors all do a good job here. Dash Mihok is a loving father who serves his country honorably. Nicki Aycox delivers an effective mix of vulnerability and drive. Uriah Shelton shows a lot of determination in the face of obstacles, and of course he can sing. Ruben Studdard does a fine job as a true man of God. I don't know the name of Henry's grandfather, but he is genuinely hateful and has no redeeming qualities. Still, that means a good performance.

This is a movie about music, but I will say the only music I enjoyed came from the 40-year-old pickup of Henry's grandfather. I agree with him about good music. Still, the singers and rappers in this movie do a good job even if their style is not my taste. We are not subjected to the really awful performers because the audio continues to come from Kymrence Young as the judges give bad news to pretty much everyone else.

I heard one bad word bleeped, and a racist term that could be heard on "All in the Family". And then there's the way Henry gets treated by his grandfather. There is another violent incident which the audience should enjoy. Let's not forget people who use. There are family values here, but it's not all good clean entertainment.

It's a worthwhile effort.

What a joke! Just horrible...

There are so many things wrong with this movie. The rapper wannabe dad gets called off to deploy and these people think the family isn't getting paid? Mom sells the family car, kid has to enter a singing contest to feed the family (eyeroll)... The kid isn't even that great of a singer and this whole show was more than I could handle. Turned it off about 30 minutes in. The acting was terrible and then we had to hear Bunchy "rap" ?!? There was so much cliche nonsense I wanted to vomit. Just avoid this mess...

Excellent film. Understated!!

I came across this film purely by accident but glad I did! Although its on the lower end of the budget scale compared to other big movies, it has a great story line and the cast act their parts flawlessly. I rated it 9/10, as it is one of the very few films ever that have made me shed a tear. The last half hour especially is very emotional and I agree that it is one of the best film endings I have seen. The combination of...a father fighting in Afghanistan, a mother who is rehabilitating from drug abuse and a young boy who wants to live his dream by singing, really makes an excellent storyline and great film to watch. Although its maybe not everyones cup of tea, I would highly recommend it. The free- styling is amazing and the boy singing is pretty awesome as well. If you like a good weep then get your hankies out!! 9/10 :)
