As Madea's Destination Wedding Tops the Netflix Charts, Another Tyler Perry Film Becomes a Streaming Hit
Image
The partnership between Tyler Perry and Netflix continues to bear fruit as Perry's latest film, Madea's Destination Wedding, continues to be a chart-topper days after its premiere. Thanks to its success, another Perry film is back in the public consciousness as A Madea Homecoming finds a home on the streaming charts.

Per Flix Patrol, A Madea Homecoming has joined Madea's Destination Wedding on Netflix's top 10 chart in the U.S. The film ranks 7th on the chart, outperforming Adam Sandler's Grown Ups films.

A Madea Homecoming Was Perry's Big Madea Comeback

After playing the short-fused but charismatic Mabel "Madea" Simmons since the late '90s across several successful plays and films, Perry retired the character, having long hinted at his desire to move on from her. However, amid the Covid-19 pandemic and citing society's need for laughter amid a difficult time, Perry ended his Madea retirement with A Madea Homecoming.

Tyler Perry Continues to Rule Netflix Despite Shocking Allegations Made Against Him
Image
Tyler Perry remains one of Netflix’s most dominant creative forces — even as he faces serious allegations that have sparked widespread controversy. The actor, writer, producer, and director is at the center of a $260 million lawsuit filed by The Oval actor Derek Dixon, who has accused Perry of sexual assault and workplace harassment over a period of several years. The news comes just as Perry’s latest Madea project continues to trend at #1 on Netflix. Even in the wake of the allegations, Perry’s reach remains strong. His 2022 film A Madea Homecoming — a raunchy return to form for the beloved character — has been trending again on Netflix this month, likely due to the buzz surrounding Perry’s newly released Madea’s Destination Wedding. The new film has debuted on the streamer in the number one spot, which shows the demand for Perry's comedies have been undiminished by the allegations.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Destination Wedding Soars up the Charts, Leaving Netflix’s Best Animation Behind

Madea’s Destination Wedding has stormed to the No. 1 spot on Netflix U.S. top movies chart. The latest instalment in Tyler Perry‘s Madea franchise quickly outpaced the critically acclaimed animated feature KPop Demon Hunters. According to FlixPatrol, in just two days, Madea’s Destination Wedding stole the top spot from the Netflix favorite animated musical, which sits at No. 2 now.

Perry’s signature Madea chaos and family drama continue to captivate audiences. As the movie hit the top spot, Tyler Perry also reacted with excitement on Instagram. While the movie wins big on streaming, Perry appeared in public for the first time during his movie screening following sexual harassment allegations against him.

‘Madea’s Destination Wedding’ Review: Tyler Perry Brings Back His Popular Character for a Familiar Turn
Image
Madea is back. Not that she’s been away. “Madea’s Destination Wedding” marks the 13th film appearance of Tyler Perry’s brash and loud matriarch. Her last outing, and first on Netflix, “Madea’s Homecoming,” was three years ago. She has not changed in the interim and remains endearingly obnoxious, teetering somewhere between comical and tedious. The same goes for her latest film. The plot does not matter as it serves as a situation generator for Perry’s character to get into trouble, deliver one-liners and wax poetic with life advice. It’s a formula that he’s perfected and which his audience expects with habitual regularity.

In what qualifies as high concept by Madea-movie standards, the character is transplanted to a resort in the Bahamas along with her family and the usual hangers-on. Madea, her brother Joe and Joe’s son Brian (Perry looking most like himself) travel for the wedding of Brian’s daughter,...

Madea Returns to Stir Up Trouble and Mend Fences in the Bahamas
Tyler Perry at an event for Madea's Big Happy Family (2011)
The latest chapter in one of modern cinema’s most durable and debated franchises has arrived. Madea’s Destination Wedding brings Tyler Perry’s iconic matriarch, Mabel “Madea” Simmons, out of a brief retirement and into the tropical chaos of a family wedding. The film, written, directed, and produced by Perry, continues the series’ long-standing tradition of blending broad, slapstick comedy with earnest family melodrama, this time against the backdrop of the Bahamas.

The central plot is set in motion by a surprise announcement from Madea’s grandniece, Tiffany. The family, particularly her father Brian and mother Debrah, is shocked to learn that Tiffany is engaged to a rapper named Zavier, whom she recently met, and that the wedding is scheduled to take place in just two weeks. This whirlwind romance immediately raises suspicions among the family elders. As Madea and her crew descend upon the island resort, tensions escalate.

Madea’s Destination Wedding on Netflix Brutally Snubs Love Thy Neighbor Star After 19 Years
Image
Madea’s heading to the Bahamas, but one familiar face didn’t make the guest list again. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Destination Wedding lands on Netflix this July. The trailer looks promising with beachside chaos and Madea’s signature sass. But fans have noticed that Patrice Lovely, a longtime favorite in the Madea Cinematic Universe, is missing.

For 14 years, she brought life to the scene-stealing Hattie Mae Love, both in the movie and her TV show. Now, with the second absence in a row from the franchise, fans are wondering, Has Hattie been written off? Or is something else going on behind the scenes?

Set to premiere July 11, Madea’s Destination Wedding is Tyler Perry’s 13th movie in the long-running Madea Cinematic Universe. It is also his second Madea feature released through Netflix.

Tyler Perry & Taraji P. Henson's New Thriller Movie Becomes Netflix Global Hit Despite 46% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Tyler Perry and Taraji P. Henson's new thriller movie has become a global Netflix hit despite its 46% Rotten Tomatoes score. Perry is an actor, writer, director, and producer who is perhaps best known for playing Madea in over a dozen movies. In recent years, he has made movies mostly for Netflix – writing and directing A Fall from Grace, A Madea Homecoming, A Jazzman's Blues, Mea Culpa, and The Six Triple Eight – many of which were panned by critics, but were somewhat popular on the streaming service.

Henson, on the other hand, is an acclaimed actress who rose to prominence playing a prostitute in Hustle & Flow (2005), but it was her performance as a nursing home caretaker in David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) that earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Another one of her most acclaimed roles is the mathematician Katherine Johnson in Hidden Figures.

Tyler Perry's New Madea Film Coming to Netflix Gets First Trailer
Image
Tyler Perry continues to roll out his plethora of projects in 2025, as the next film in his Madea franchise takes his popular protagonist and her family to the Caribbean. The upcoming Netflix comedy drama, Madea's Destination Wedding, gets its first trailer ahead of its anticipated summer release.

Netflix unveiled the debut trailer on Jun. 9, with Perry's Mabel "Madea" Simmons front and center in her usual brand of button-pushing humor and short-fused quips. The trailer sees Madea's grandniece Tiffany (Diamond White) announcing her impromptu engagement and upcoming wedding to her rapper boyfriend in the Bahamas, to the shock of her parents, Brian (Perry) and Debra (Taja V. Simpson). Madea claims that she's "illegal in 92 countries" before agreeing to go once she hears liquor is involved and enjoys the best of the Bahamas with her family as they prepare for the wedding. However, Madea insists "something ain't right about it at all,...

Netflix reveals new trailer for Tyler Perry's Madea’s Destination Wedding
Image
If you aren't yet a fan of Tyler Perry's character of Madea and all of her silly situations, you likely don't have time to catch up before the next iteration of Madea drops on Netflix. There are 24 films or plays (that have been recorded) featuring the character.

In other words, if you aren't yet a devotee of Madea, just wait until Madea's Destination Wedding drops on your favorite streamer on July 11 and work backward. That might make for a more interesting experience anyway.

The project is the second Perry and Netflix collaboration for Madea. The first was 2022's A Madea Homecoming. Was it Oscar-worthy? Nope, but that isn't the point. Perry wants to entertain and he has a very long track history of doing just that.

Tyler Perry’s ‘The Six Triple Eight’ Is His Most-Watched Netflix Movie to Date, Boosts His Other Movies on the Streamer by 45% (Exclusive)
Image
Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” is not only his most-watched Netflix movie to date — with 52.4 million views over its first four weeks on the streamer — but the historical drama has also boosted viewership for his other films on the service.

Netflix tells Variety that eyeballs on Perry’s four other Netflix films increased by more than 45% since “The Six Triple Eight” began streaming on Dec. 20. Plus, the film reached the Top 10 in more than 85 countries, the most of any film he’s made for the streamer.

It stands to reason that viewership numbers like these were what Netflix and Perry had in mind when the two parties entered into a multi-year first-look film deal in 2023. Perry, famous for his volume as a producer, has also turned the titles around swiftly compared to other overall creators at Netflix. “We are thankful that The View has corrected their false and defamatory statements about Ms. Delvey,” said attorney Duncan Levin in a statement provided to Deadline following today’s View episode. “Like so many others, Anna has made mistakes and, most importantly, she has made amends by serving both time in prison and repaying all her debts in full. Anna deserves a second chance and accepts The View’s apology.”

On today’s episode, View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin updated a September 5 discussion in which she and some of her cohosts called out Delvey’s casting on the dancing competition, suggesting that Delvey — fka Anna Sorokin and subject...

Tyler Perry's 2005 Movie That Launched His Wildly Successful Career Is Coming To Netflix In September
Image
Tyler Perry's Diary of a Mad Black Woman is on its way to Netflix. The first in a franchise with over a dozen movies, 11 plays, and a long-running show, Diary quickly became a massive success. It earned $50.7 million at the box office on a budget of just $5.5 million, and it helped Perry become a household name practically overnight. 19 years after its release, the romantic comedy has endured as a classic hit.

Led by Kimberly Elise, Steve Harris, and Perry, the movie introduced Madea, who would be the only major member of the franchise to explode into extraordinary popularity. Having started Perry's on-screen career with a bang, it is now coming to Netflix on September 1, where it will join Tyler Perry's A Madea Homecoming to offer more insight into how the wide and wild world of Madea began.

Tyler Perry's New Prime Video Movie Nabs Rare 0% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Divorce in the Black is a critical disaster with a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a record low for Tyler Perry's career. Perry's audience scores often disagree with critics, but even general audiences found Divorce disappointing with a 54% score. Despite Perry's success with Madea movies, Divorce in the Black marks his lowest outing yet in terms of critical reception.

Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black has made a splash on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is hardly the impact that Perry wanted to make. The drama was released on July 11 on Prime Video and tells the story of a couple with a struggling marriage as they reckon with the idea of past misdeeds and divorce. Perry, who earned fame with the Madea movies, served as director, producer, and writer. Unfortunately, Divorce in the Black's reviews have been tremendously bleak.

While the score is likely to fluctuate with more reviews, Divorce in the Black...

Is A Madea Family Funeral Worth Watching? Breaking Down The Tyler Perry Movie's Reviews & Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Image
A Madea Family Funeral has an 11% critics score and 31% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, resulting in a "rotten" label. Viewers found the plot predictable, with reused jokes, inconsistent characters, flat tone, and bad dialogue. Despite flaws, the film is worth watching for fans of Tyler Perry's comedy style and the Madea franchise.

A Madea Family Funeral is part of Tyler Perry’s Madea cinematic universe, and as such, it might not be a comedy for everyone. Tyler Perry is best known for his work as a comedy actor and director, all thanks to his Madea movie series. Madea is Perry’s most famous character, who made her big screen debut in 2005 in Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Since then, Madea has been the star of 11 movies and had a cameo in the 2008 comedy Meet the Browns. In 2019, Perry brought A Madea Family Funeral, the last film from the...

Tyler Perry's New Netflix Movie Destroys His Most Optimistic Rotten Tomatoes Streak 5 Years In The Making
Image
Mea Culpa broke Tyler Perry's promising Rotten Tomatoes streak, marking a step back for the filmmaker. A Madea Family Funeral and A Jazzman's Blues improved Perry's scores prior to Mea Culpa's disappointment. Perry's next film, Six Triple Eight, offers redemption with a diverse cast and unique World War II story.

Tyler Perry’s movies are a hit or miss with critics, and his latest Netflix project has now destroyed his most optimistic Rotten Tomatoes streak that had been building up in the last five years. Tyler Perry’s career began as a theater actor in the 1990s, and he made his big screen debut in 2005 in the rom-com Diary of a Mad Black Woman, written by him and where he played his most famous character, Madea, as well as her brother Joe and his son, Brian. Kelly Rowland initially turned down the lead role in Tyler Perry's erotic thriller, but eventually agreed to participate after being reassured by the filmmaker. Rowland enjoyed collaborating with Perry on the Mea Culpa project, finding it to be an exciting and rewarding creative experience. Mea Culpa explores the best and worst of humanity through the genre of an erotic thriller.

What is right or wrong doesn’t apply. In Netflix’s upcoming legal thriller, Mea Culpa, the lines blur as criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), tries to defend her client, Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), as she also begins to succumb to his steamy and seductive charms. And in a brand-new sit-down, Rowland revealed that when she found out Tyler Perry’s new film was an erotic thriller, the actress said “no” to the part.
