Canadian Singer Jully Black’s Subtle Change To National Anthem At NBA All-Star Game Draws Praise
Image
Canadian R&b and soul singer Jully Black is being praised online after simply changing one word during her Canadian national anthem performance at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday.

Black took to centre court in Salt Lake City and quickly drew attention when she sang “O Canada! Our home on native land,” in which she paused before emphasizing the word “on,” ultimately changing the original lyrics of “our home and native land.”

The singer-songwriter’s “minor change with major impact/meaning,” as one fan wrote online, certainly didn’t go unnoticed amid an ongoing national conversation about Indigenous rights. Following Black’s performance, the hashtag #ourhomeONnativeland began trending on Twitter.

Sounds like O Canada just got another appropriate update to the national anthem—unofficially officially—by Jully Black.

And it ain't on that 3 Tenors bullshit.

Image
European Film Promotion, a network of national film promotion bodies, has unveiled its lineup of films for its Future Frames program, which screen as part of Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s industry section, Eastern Promises.

Running under the banner “Generation Next of European Cinema,” the program will present 10 films directed by some of Europe’s most promising film students and graduates. The program, which has been expanded by several kick-off events, will be running from June 29 to July 8 in a digital format.

The filmmakers are nominated by their countries’ national film promotion institutes, with the final selection made by Karlovy Vary’s artistic director Karel Och, and its program coordinator Anna Purkrabkova.

Karlovy Vary canceled the public side of its festival this year, which Och acknowledged was a “tough decision,” and the industry section runs as a digital event. However, Och said: “Not even such challenging times will stop us...

Astral City: A Spiritual Journey (Nosso Lar) | Review
Director: Wagner de Assis Writer: Wagner de Assis Starring: Renato Prieto, Fernando Alves Pinto, Rosane Mulholland, Inez Viana, Rodrigo dos Santos, Werner Schünemann, Clemente Viscaíno, Helena Varvaki, Aracy Cardoso, Selma Egrei Based on the best selling book by the infamous Brazilian medium Chico Xavier, Astral City: A Spiritual Journey tells the story of André Luiz (Renato Prieto), a doctor who experiences a spiritual awakening after he dies. Xavier purportedly wrote Astral City with the guidance of André Luiz's spirit -- who communicated the story to Xavier from the afterlife -- and considering the minute and thorough details revealed in the film, that actually seems as if it could be believable. I will refrain from commenting on that, though... André first wakes up in purgatory, a nightmarish dimension of pain and suffering. In this realm, André is referred to as "a suicide," therefore his purgatorial peers do not believe that he deserves to be saved.

Record Box Office Pushes the Bar for Brazilian Films
Tropa de Élite (2007)
Buenos Aires – Elite Squad 2’s record performance – it became Brazil’s most popular film ever, and even eclipsed Avatar at the box office — seems to have encouraged Brazilian film protectionism to take a small step forward.

Presidential decree number 7414, which was made official last Friday, increases the screen quota for exhibition of local films in all Brazilian theaters. The order was one of the last government policies signed by outgoing President “Lula” da Silva before delivering office to Dilma Roussef, the first woman to be elected as Brazil’s head of state, who was sworn in on January 1st.

This type of protectionist policy has been implemented in the Brazilian film industry for decades, but it hadn’t been updated for some years. Since 2007, theaters were obligated to screen local productions for a minimum period of 28 days in the case of one-screen theaters. That number could go as high as 63 days for multiplexes.

The Elite Squad 2 Dethrones The Twilight Saga: Eclipse at Brazil's 2010 Box Office
Wagner Moura, The Elite Squad 2 José Padilha's Tropa de Elite 2 / The Elite Squad 2, a controversial sequel to the equally controversial 2007 Brazilian blockbuster and Berlin Film Festival winner The Elite Squad, has become the top local production at the Brazilian box office in 2010. According to preliminary results accounting for 90% of the 696 theaters showing the film, after 10 days The Elite Squad 2 has been seen by 4.14 million moviegoers (approx. Us$26.6m in ticket sales), surpassing previous 2010 hits Nosso Lar / Our Home and Chico Xavier, both dramas with a spiritualistic bent, which to date have sold 3.64m and 3.41m admissions, respectively. Here's another comparison: Brazil's submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, Fábio Barreto's costly Lula, the Son of Brazil, sold approximately 800,000 admissions. On its opening weekend alone, The Elite Squad 2 was seen by 1.3m moviegoers according to the film trade [...]...

Julia Roberts in Comer, rezar, amar (2010)
'Love' knocks 'Afterlife' from No. 1 o'seas
Julia Roberts in Comer, rezar, amar (2010)
After drawing relatively tame box office for nearly two months on the foreign theatrical circuit, Sony's "Eat Pray Love" emerged center stage over the weekend, claiming the No. 1 spot with a $17.4 million gross collected from 4,280 screens in 56 markets.

Director Ryan Murphy's romantic drama has rolled up a box office total of $64.1 million since it opened overseas on Aug. 12, and is rapidly closing the gap between its domestic cume of more than $80 million. The Julia Roberts vehicle was sparked by seven No. 1 market openings on the weekend, the best of which was Australia ($3.57 million at 328 locations).

While overall overseas action is generally anemic this time of year, the six major Hollywood studios are collectively surging to a foreign box office record in 2010.

According to studio figures, the six majors have realized January-September overseas box office of $9.85 billion, an increase of nearly 35% over 2009's nine-month total for the companies. (In calendar...

Brasil (1985)
'Afterlife' No. 1 o'seas fourth straight week
Brasil (1985)
In another listless weekend on the foreign theatrical circuit, Constantin Film's "Resident Evil: Afterlife" in 3D eked out its fourth consecutive round as the No. 1 overseas title, grossing $15.6 million from 7,120 venues in 67 markets.

The latest in the scifi-horror franchise is currently scoring solid numbers in Latin and South America -- it was No. 1 in Mexico, where it has grossed $9.3 million over three rounds, and in Chile -- and its weekend box office pushed the Milla Jovovich vehicle's foreign gross past the $180 million mark (cume, $181.9 million) accumulated since its Sept. 10 offshore opening.

The weekend action overall typified the current between-the-seasons box office lull. That will change next month when several potential blockbusters -- including Warner's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" -- begin offshore rollouts.

No. 2 for the second straight round, Sony's "Eat Pray Love" is picking up steam overseas, garnering $13.5 million from 3,448 screens in 32 markets. The romantic...

Oscar 2011: Fábio Barreto's Lula, O Filho Do Brasil (Part II)
Glória Pires, Rui Ricardo Diaz (as the adult Lula) Lula, The Son Of Brazil: Brazil's Controversial Oscar 2011 Submission – Part I “I've never seen anything unanimous in my life," producer Iafa Britz, whose Nosso Lar / Our Home has become a national blockbuster, was quoted as saying in Veja. "I can't think of a single example of unanimity. But I prefer to keep quiet and accept [the decision]." Anna Muylaert, whose Smoke Gets in Your Eyes was also in the running, remarked that the committee may have chosen Lula, the Son of Brazil because of the Academy's penchant for shortlisting historical dramas. "If that characteristic is taken into account, The Son of Brazil fulfills the requirement," Muylaert explains. "But there are other [requirements] necessary to give a film a chance: quality and box-office muscle, for instance. And Lula lacks both quality and popular appeal." Painting the film selection committee and Barreto's [...]...

'Inception' tops overseas box office

"Inception" by a length!

In yet another down-to-the-wire weekend on the foreign theatrical circuit, Warner Bros.' "Inception" reclaimed the No. 1 overseas box office crown, nosing past the previous champ, independently distributed action title "The Expendables."

What sealed "Inception's" return to box office supremacy was its huge, No. 1 opening in China, which Warners declared was the fourth biggest logged in that market by any non-Chinese title. Five-day tally is estimated by Warners to be $13.6 million thanks to some from 2.6 million admissions clocked at about 3,300 screens.

Director Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio has breezed past the $400 million foreign gross mark in eight rounds of offshore release (cume $418.9 million), rolling up $24.4 million on the weekend overall from some 8,200 screens 60 markets.

"Inception" took first place offshore in the opening three weekends of last month while "Expendables" muscled its way to the top on Aug. 22 and Aug. 29.

For its part,...

Wow, where did this come from? Trailer for the Brazilian spiritual ride Nosso Lar
From what I understand the English title is The Astral City and seems to incorporates visions of hell and a futuristic society, all based on the astral plane only reachable after death. We just got the heads up on this and I don't know where this came from, but 20th Century Fox is backing it and it looks bloody incredible. You can find more details and a much lengthier synopsis (in English) on the official website. The film is directed by Wagner de Assis and based on the works of Xico Xavier.

Nosso Lar will be released September 3rd in Brazil.

The Astral City is the name of the spirit colony that Andre Luiz describes in this first book of his collection. In this vibrant narrative, the author offers us his observations and discoveries regarding life in the spirit world, acting as a sort of reporter who records his own experiences.
