Well-paced slice of B-movie action

TACTICAL FORCE is another vehicle for bald, hulking, ex-wrestler turned actor Steve Austin, who seems to have become the new Seagal ever since he starred as a villain in Stallone's THE EXPENDABLES. So far, I've seen Austin in a passable variant of Van Damme's A.W.O.L. (called DAMAGE), but this is a straightforward shoot-em-up. It's as much fun as DAMAGE, proving that Austin is an adequate star for fans of light action.

The premise and setting for this movie couldn't have been much cheaper: a small SWAT team are on a training exercise in an abandoned warehouse, but they soon find themselves assailed by various gangster types. Cue lots of drawn-out fight scenes and sequences of characters firing heavy weaponry at each other. It's a workable premise - Tarantino revealed the brilliance of utilising such a setting and a small cast twenty years ago in RESERVOIR DOGS - and the decent pacing makes it a painless viewing experience.

The production values are a little weak if you look at them too closely, and it's fair to say that the cast are well-suited to B-movies; Austin is on particularly dodgy ground here, and would do better to just keep his mouth shut and hit people as that's what he does best. There are some heavyweights (physically rather than acting) in support, like Michael Jai White (just in case you wondered what happened to him after UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: THE RETURN) and the arresting Darren Shahlavi and Keith Jardine, but this looks and feels like a B-movie through and through.

The action isn't bad, but I would have liked a little more of it. The requisite shoot-outs and fist-fights are fun, although the van chase is ridiculously stupid and some of the explosions are a little on the fake side. The ending is also a tad disappointing, getting too mixed up between the bad-bad characters and the good-bad characters. But I went into TACTICAL FORCE expecting nothing, and I got a mildly entertaining movie instead, so I can't complain too much.

Worst "SWAT" movie ever.

A really good example where larger than live characters work is Stallone's "The Expendables". Here they tried but the characters just sound dumb. As do all dialogs in "Tactical Force". Throughout the movie I had the feeling that the cast wrote the script themselves while having a few drinks too many and now they made it into a movie with the sole goal of having some fun themselves, no matter the outcome. But while it looks like they really had fun doing it the only reason I watched through the whole thing was to see all martial arts scenes with Michal Jai White because those few were the only half good thing about the flick.

I'm pretty sure if any SWAT member ever sees this movie he'll face-palm himself black and blue because kids playing cowboys and Indians in the garden show better tactics and skills then the SWAT team in this movie.

Then there is the endless talking of the bad guys in every moment they are in control. It's like they were thinking "how long can we stretch the cliché of the bad guys talking too much until they get overpowered until someone switches off the movie or starts taking vodka intraveinously to find some fun in it?".

The movie also had two female characters but they don't do much except getting one over the head at some point and more or less looking pretty. Lexa Doig in SWAT gear is the "less" and Candace Elaine in leather the "more".

It seems they tried to give the dialog this cult movie style of humor, the one that's pretty well executed in "Mean Guns", but all I could do here was roll my eyes. As I said before, it just sounds dumb.

I think you really have to be a fanboy/fangirl of one of the actors to find anything enjoyable about this movie. For me that was Michael Jai White, without him I'd switched it off after 10 minutes.

I feel bad for Michael Jai White

After resolving a supermarket hold up in violent fashion, a Los Angeles S.W.A.T. team - leader Tate (Steve Austin), Hunt (Michael Jai White), Jannard (Lexa Doig), and Blanco (Steve Bacic) - are assigned to do training at a remote facility (with only themselves on the site...huh, no trainers?). This is bad news as two mob factions (including Michael Shanks doing one of cinema's worst Russian accents) have descended up on the warehouse looking for a mysterious briefcase. Walter Hill's TRESPASS, much? This is really bottom of the barrel stuff and I feel bad for the big names who actually signed up to be in this. Particularly the very talented Jai White, who deserves so much better. Director Adamo Paolo Cultraro, he of the many Os, just makes an ugly, ugly film with flat digital photography and horrible editing during the fights. For example, any time a person gets punched, they do a visual effect of the image rocking/blurring. Austin still has little personality (his attempts at comedy are almost unbearable) and I'm surprised he still gets these lead roles. The final fight is WWE vs. UFC as he takes on veteran MMA fighter Keith "The Dean of Mean" Jardine. I'll let you guess who wins.

Enjoyable B movie

I enjoyed this movie right from the beginning, knowing it was a B movie but with good action actors. I'm currently writing this review midway through the movie and decided to voice my opinion since I'm constantly reading others opinion about movies on IMDb. The movie isn't great some flaws but to be honest more enjoyable than a lot of over-hyped movies such as expendables, hanna, and iron man 2. Of course only an opinion and these movies budgets were much bigger but it is a trip to see unheard of movies actually being better than movies I anticipate to see and am let down. Hopefully this will help in your decision on whether to watch, should enjoy if you like to the point action.

Better then expected

Hard to know what to expect with the mix of reviews, however I thought the movie was much better then the IMDb rating. It had enough action to keep me watching, enough comedy to keep me laughing and an overall engaging plot. The acting was good enough for a'B' movie- it's not like it had Meryl Streep in it. The quality of the video in both visual and sound was 'A' to me. I wouldn't go as far in saying I'd watch it again and again- but feel that it's still worth the rental or DVD purchase. What do people except for a 'cop comedy/action' ??? It was just as good as 'red' or the 'expendables' for story/ plot/ writing/ visual with a bit worse acting quality. ( B or unknown actors) Ignore the critics and form an opinion of your own.

Eat my Grandma!

The title is actual dialogue from the movie. Yes, some one wrote this, and another actually said it out loud in the movie! I think that tells you all you need to know about this movie. This movie is chock full of senseless macho bravado and brainless cliche lines. The police SWAT team has no concern for the safety of civilians when trying to take down a bunch of dimwits who storm and hold a convenience store like they besieging Fort Knox. The movie goes on to highlight bad acting (movie makers MUST APOLOGIZE to all Italians! LOL!), idiotic decisions (from good guys and bad guys alike) and the spectacular Shakespearean line - "EAT MY GRANDMA!". Finally, the massive twist in the final scene is so impractical that even the movie makers could not explain it themselves, so they just decide to ignore it.

In summary, this is a movie best put on when you are doing chores around the house, and you just want some mindless moving pictures to watch. You should not watch this for realism, accuracy or above average talent.

One of the worst action movies I've ever seen; Would NOT Recommend

Directed by Adamo Paulo Culatrano

Starring Steve Austin, Michael Jai White and Lexa Doig

Plot Overview: After a hostage situation gone bad, Tate(Steve Austin) and his SWAT team are sent back to do basic training but when they are caught in the middle of a gang war and with no live ammo, things go bad real fast.

General:

Overall: I will never rate a movie either a 1 or a 10 just to decrease its rank. I will only rank movies based on what I genuinely think they should be ranked. That being said, this is one of the worst movies I've watched in the past few years. With the bleak exception of a kind of alright premise(which they drop within the first 40 minutes), there is nothing redeeming to this movie. The acting was atrocious, the story was nonexistent and the action was just awful. The tone is all over the place and the dialogue was depressingly bad. I can genuinely not think of one proper strength of this movie. I just can't. Aside from a premise which is dropped, there isn't anything that I can say kept me watching other than the fact that I was interested if it could become any worse. If this is your standard for quality entertainment and you hold this movie at a rank with 'Die Hard' and 'Judgement Day', then I don't envy you, and I suggest you watch a LOT more movies.

I don't know what type of people will like this other than maybe if you enjoy Steve Austin and if you admire this 'style' of action.

Wouldn't Recommend.

Detailed:

The acting was just all around atrocious. I'm not gonna bother mentioning names *cough* Steve Austin *cough* because I don't deem the majority of them worthy of space in this review. That is how poor they were. To top that off, each and every character was either an archetype or human stereotype, and none of them were even remotely interesting or likable or enjoyable to watch.

There was an idea, buried deep deep down under this trash, that could have made a competent, fun action movie with some quirky characters and cool one liners. This good idea was completely disregarded after maybe 40 minutes and it just becomes a stupid action movie after that. I'm not sure if there was an actual story and that plot overview I wrote above was something I think I made up to flow with the movie because very little time is actually dedicated to it. That would be fine but if there was a semi-competent story, I could have named a strength to the film. The ending was also absolutely absurd. Nothing more needs to be said on the matter. It was awful.

The cinematography can be summed up in THREE words: What. The. Heck. The framing of shots, the editing, the lighting - what were they thinking! I can give credit to Joel Schumacher's dutch angle obsessed 'Batman and Robin' in the cinematography department but even this movie lacks that.

The effects are, to put it in layman's terms, absolutely barbarically god awful. The set design was lazy and generic. The costume design fell into three categories: Cop stereotypes, Russian Stereotypes and Italian stereotypes. That's not a compliment by the way.

The movie's main focus should have been the action. So if little effort went to anything before it, the action should be amazing. Right? Well, logically yes; in reality no. The action was just bad. This movie's exhausted by brain cells and I just don't feel like it deserves anything above Primary school vocabulary.

Another flaw with the film is the tone. Upon hearing the premise of this film, I thought it could be an alright and fun action movie with some witty one liners and clever action. Well I've established the poor action so I'll address the tone. The opening sequence of this film is pretty light hearted and almost fun. Then the movie continues and the tone goes on a roller coaster but, unlike a roller coaster, there's no satisfying climax. The dialogue was terrible. Here's a game: Take a shot whenever someone says something racist/sexist/homophobic OR when there is some form of stereotype uses. I guarantee you'll be hospitalised by the half way mark.

Could have been better, but could SERIOUSLY have been worse....

OK. I'll admit to not really being a Steve Austin fan, but I do like Michael J. Yeah, and Keith Jardine I know, but I didn't recognise any other names, or actors.

It's far fetched. Very. Full of rather silly plot holes. (Like 4 member SWAT teams, etc etc, as other reviewers have said).

BUT. As a (somewhat implausible) action film, it was OK, almost pretty good. The script was good, in places. It's not a spoiler to say, "Wait, I need a line", had me laughing out loud. In fact, several of the lines had me laughing. And either Demitrius (Michael Shanks) was given all the good lines, or he's a SERIOUSLY good comic actor - deadpan, but funny.

So. Far from 100%, and Michael J wasn't given his best moves, but still.

One for the boys, really. And the boys who like action films and aren't too discriminating.

Good for what it is

Stone Cold as Tate, leader of a group of comically badass SWAT team, has his team having to do training exercises in an abandoned warehouse after the chief doesn't care for their comically badass shenanigans in a recent hostage situation. Once there they find themselves dealing with unexpected mobsters without bullets.

This film is ridiculous with a capital R, but it's also entertaining in a b-grade, brainless popcorn action flick, a genre that has sadly been on a steady decline since the glorious '80's (talking about quantity not necessarily quality). This is an unrepentant action movie with no pretenses and I can appreciate that.

No Talent Director Makes Crappy Film Even More Crappy

I like action films. I like smart ones like Heat but I also enjoy brainless action films like Con Air. This film, at its very best, could never have been a Con Air. The concept is too thin, the stakes too low, the writing too weak.

That being said, it might have been a forgettable 6 out of 10. Instead, Adamo Paolo Cultraro manages to take a weak concept and reduce it into such a lousy, awful, painful piece of crap that I would give anything for my time back. The photography sucks. The camera angels suck. The lighting sucks. Every line is delivered flat. The acting is really, really awful. Every artistic and technical choice that can be made on a film is made as wrong as can be.

I accidentally saw Adamo Cultraro's other film. I didn't realize it was his. He has shown some growth from his first film; budget growth. He hasn't shown any artistic growth. He is the kind of talentless SoCal idiot who jiggles a camera and thinks he's making The Third Man. The rest of his talentless crew would have more dignity if they'd worked on a soft-core porn shoot.

Steve Austin why do you make such awful films? You have enough clout to surround yourself with better than this! This is so awful it makes 1980's action films by Van Damme look brilliant by comparison!

Your time would be better spent scrubbing that stain in the guest bedroom.

Great Movie, Not For Those Who Think It's Serious

A great movie with some notable actors that was pulled off well. I think some may have seen this movie and thought it to be a serious film in t he likes of S.W.A.T. (Jackson, Farrell, 2003), however, this film I think is intended to take a more comical side, while still focusing on action and story. It does a great job at setting up the characters as a team, and showing you how well they can work together. Unlike other S.W.A.T. or Police themed movies this one does not confuse you with all sorts of law enforcement lingo and the like, but immerses you into the world of Law Enforcement in a mild, and progressively more serious manner.

I did see the twist coming to a point, however I don't think it was a dead giveaway. And again, I'd like to point out that this is neither a fully blown COMEDY or POLICE THRILLER, but instead a satirical police themed action film, in close similarity to Hot Fuzz (Pegg, Frost, 2007). I think the overall idea behind this film, and those like it, is to build a relationship with the main characters that will, by the end of the film, make you want to see a Part II. This film does that, and does that well.

Absolute garbage- would give negative stars if I could

This is honestly the worst movie I've ever seen. The only realistic part of this movie is their uniforms. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin is the worst actor I have ever seen in my entire life. I've seen zombies played better than he plays a SWAT team leader. It's not funny, even though it's apparently supposed to be. The action sucks and is corny. My cat could have sat on a computer keyboard and written a better script for this movie. The producers, actors, writers, cinematographers, 'stunt' people, and everyone involved with this 'movie' should be ashamed. If you want to watch a real action movie with good lines, real actors, and real action, watch S.W.A.T. with Collin Ferrel, Samuel L. Jackson, Michelle Rodriguez, and L.L. Cool J. "Tactical Force?" The title even sounds like a cop playset you'd buy at the dollar store, complete with little plastic handcuffs. This movie is a disgrace.

OK action flick

Clever story line has a SWAT team training in an old hangar, only to cross paths with not one, but two gangs who are also inside the hangar, looking for a particular container. Problem for the SWAT people: All they have with them are blanks while the bad guys are armed to the teeth. Michael Jai White and Steve Austin co-star. Fast-moving, with lots of fights and running gun battles. Some comic moments, which help. The big showdown near the end is all too predictable, and Austin isn't required to do much acting (he was much better in "Damage"), but this is a passable video on all other counts. The luscious Lexa Doig is along for the ride.

Delivered what was expected

Be realistic people. Movies like this are for witty banter, action and fight scenes. The negative reviews don't seem to take into account the purpose of mindless action entertainment. If you are a Michael Jai White fan, or a Steve Austin fan, you will enjoy watching this. It was almost a cut out of the old school Cannongate style 80's action recipe for a guilty pleasure. Yes, some dialogue is cringe worthy, but then again, not exactly going into it expecting anything more than what it is. It's funny and moves right along. The smart ass comments between the characters is fun and the cast doesn't try to take themselves too serious...they are there to have fun and provide some escapism for the viewer....mission accomplished.

One...of...the...worst...action...movies...ever. I held out until Michael Shanks showed up. That was disappointing. Who wrote and directed this? Unbelievablely AWFUL. Bad dialog, actors just phoning it in, cheesy action sequence, g*d awful directing. So boring, I fell asleep.

i loved the movie

I expected absolutely nothing out of this movie. It was 2AM, I couldn't sleep so I started watching this movie, hoping it would make me sleep, but things went other way around totally.

The beginning wasn't impressive, I thought the actors are pretty much suckers. But when the story started to take shape, it became interesting.

The plot is good. No one would have imagined that unarmed SWAT guys could have to face a real action at their training camp. The Italian guy was good. And the most impressive role was of Kenny's. He killed all the scenes.

Overall it was a good movie for me. I am a fan of Steve Austin AKA Stone Cold. Director was successful at keeping the physical fights short, because everyone knows that physical action never lasts more than 2 minutes unless it's a superhero.

I'm shocked to see the ratings of this movie. It should have been rated more than 6.5. ANyway nice movie.
