“Last Breath” (2025) is based on the true story of a 2012 saturation diving accident in which the dynamics system processor of an underwater vessel failed, causing the diver Chris Lemons to spiral out of control. Lemons was separated from his fellow diver, David Yuasa after his umbilical cable was cut during the accident. Yuasa was left to assume that Lemons had perished, as he had only five minutes of breathable oxygen left in his suit at the time. However, his fellow diver Duncan Allcock, who was operating the deep sea exploration ship, was convinced that Lemons was still alive.

Russell Crowe will always be known as one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but 11 years ago, he made his feature directorial debut in a thrilling neo-Western that’s finally back on streaming. Crowe both directs and stars in The Water Diviner, the 2014 period drama that also features Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion) andJai Courtney (Divergent). The film follows an Australian man who travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli in search of his three missing songs. After previously being absent from streaming, The Water Diviner was recently added to HBO Max and is now available for all subscribers. The film earned modest scores of 63% from critics and 60% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it grossed only $35 million at the box office against an estimated $22 million budget.

There’s a moment in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator when Russell Crowe’s enslaved Roman general Maximus, fresh from eviscerating five foes in short order, throws his arms in the air and asks a stunned arena, “Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained?”
It would not be that far from fiction to picture the organizers of Sunday night’s Golden Bee Awards repeating the same question after the final spectacle had been presented to close out a nearly three-hour ceremony held inside Gzira’s Fort Manoel in Malta. Presented by the Mediterrane Film Festival and hosted by David Walliams, the outdoor show finished shy of midnight and by that point had featured around a dozen musical numbers (complete with props, backup dancers and custom backdrops), a slew of Hollywood presenters (Anna Camp, Chris Perfetti, Jared Harris, Karen Pittman and Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier), three fireworks displays and even Maximus himself.

Plenty of actors over the years have benefited from starring in Marvel movies that went on to become huge hits, but perhaps none more than Simu Liu. Relatively unheard of before starring in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Liu has gone on to lead other hits like Barbie (Margot Robbie), Atlas (Sterling K. Brown), and Last Breath (Woody Harrelson). The New York Times recently released a list of the 100 best films of the 21st century, which included ballots from major Hollywood stars, writers, and directors. Liu was among those to earn a ballet, and he voted Interstellar as one of the best movies of the 21st century — the film finished in spot #89 on the list. Liu also voted for Inside Out, Get Out, La La Land, Tropic Thunder, and more in his list of 10.
Interstellar is the 2014 space sci-fi epic starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway that was directed by Christopher Nolan.

The halfway point of 2025 is just around the corner, and so far, the big screen has been booming. From surprise smash hits like Ryan Coogler's horror actioner Sinners to smaller critic and audience favorites like Friendship, long-awaited sequels like 28 Years Later, or blockbusters like A Minecraft Movie and Thunderbolts*, this year has been delivering one buzzworthy film after another, with even more exciting projects on the way. Lost in the murky waters, however, is Woody Harrelson's small, tense survival thriller Last Breath, which came out in the shadow of Captain America: Brave New World and managed to earn solid reviews, but only grossed an underwhelming $23.2 million at the box office. Now, however, the saturation-diving flick is resurfacing on the streaming charts, ranking eighth on Prime Video, just behind the 2024 spider horror movie, Sting.
Alex Parkinson directed Last Breath and penned the screenplay with Mitchell Lafortune and David Brooks.

Hollywood powerhouse Robert De Niro has had a few projects released this year, but one has quietly flown under the radar. His first release of the year was Netflix's political thriller miniseries, Zero Day, which was soon followed by the Warner Bros. gangster feature The Alto Knights. But the project you might not have heard of is Tin Soldier, an action thriller directed by Brad Furman that's had a rocky road to release. The movie recently overcame its distribution woes when Samuel Goldwyn Films officially secured its North American distribution rights. While it awaits its debut stateside, Tin Soldier has already marched onto international territory via Prime Video, where it's currently gaining traction.
Tin Soldier features a super-stacked cast. Alongside De Niro, the cult thriller also stars Jamie Foxx, Scott Eastwood, John Leguizamo (John Wick), Saïd Taghmaoui (John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum), and British singer Rita Ora. The...

After Hideo Kojima shared his review for Last Breath, star Simu Liu now takes to social media with his reaction. Directed by Alex Parkinson, the 2025 survival thriller tells the true story of deep-sea diver Chris Lemons (Finn Cole) and the daring rescue that his crewmates stage after he becomes trapped far below the ocean's surface. Liu stars in the Last Breath cast as Dave Yuasa, with Woody Harrelson playing Duncan Allock, Cliff Curtis playing Andre Jenson, and Mark Bonnar playing Craig. The film was released in February, earning generally positive reviews.
Among the positive reviews for Last Breath is one from Kojima, who finally caught up with the film, and Liu has evidently now seen the legendary video game creator's thoughts. In a post on X on June 15, Kojima shared a glowing review, praising the movie for its "unrelenting sense of claustrophobia and oxygen-deprived tension" before then calling out Liu specifically,...

With new releases and a few all-time greats, these Peacock movies are perfect for your next movie night.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Peacock quietly has one of the best movie lineups around. No, it doesn’t have the biggest library — but what it does have is a tight, well-curated mix of new releases, old favorites, and hidden gems that actually make scrolling fun instead of overwhelming. And full disclosure: my movie lists tend to be horror-light (not a huge horror person), and this one’s no exception. But if you’re into big-hearted comedies, smart thrillers, throwback blockbusters, along with a few buzzy new originals, you’re in the right place. Here are my top seven favorite movies streaming on Peacock right now.

In the United States, Kandahar is streaming for free on Tubi, but globally, the film is streaming on Netflix, and it’s currently #1 on streaming charts at the time of writing in Thailand and several other countries. Kandahar earned a 42% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience-driven Popcornmeter lands at a much more respectable 82%. Happy Gilmoreis one of Adam Sandler's best-loved comedies in a collection that often proves divisive. Described by legendary critic Roger Ebert as "the story of a violent sociopath," the film follows Sandler as the titular Happy, a failed hockey player who finds he has a particular skill for driving long and accurate golf shots. Almost 30 years since the debut of this beloved 90s comedy, a sequel is finally on its way, and it seems that, in preparation for its arrival, viewers are flocking to streaming to remind themselves of the chaos.
Officially, as of June 2, 2025, Happy Gilmore is the second highest-viewed movie on streaming platform Peacock, outperforming a selection of big-name titles before having glory snatched at the final hurdle by Peter Hastings’ Dog Man. A star-studded cast and impressive production budget are never guarantees of success. If one man knows this more than many, it's Adam Sandler, whose vast back catalog of high-profile productions includes many that failed to live up to both financial and critical expectations. One such example is 2015's Pixels, a chaotic comedy following an alien invasion of Earth after they misinterpret footage of classic video games as a declaration of war.
Joining Sandler in the impressive cast for Pixels are Peter Dinklage, Kevin James, Josh Gad, and Michelle Monaghan, as well as a cameo from tennis great Serena Williams. But this star-studded lineup proved ultimately useless when trying to craft Pixels a positive reaction. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Pixels achieved a dismal 18% critics' score, with a 46% audience rating offering at least a glimmer of hope, albeit because of the many other entries in Sandler's filmography with lower comparative ratings.

To say that Abel Tesfaye — better known as The Weeknd — sang out of key in his latest acting outing is an understatement.
Hurry Up Tomorrow, a psychological thriller about a tormented pop star played by Tesfaye, debuted to a mere $3.3 million domestically from 2,020 theaters over the May 16-18 weekend to finish in sixth-place despite his status as one of music’s best-selling superstars. Overseas, it likewise made roughly $3 million.
Heading into the weekend, the $15 million movie was tracking to open to $5 million to $9 million in North America. But withering reviews — its score on Rotten Tomatoes was 14 percent — combined with lethal word-of-mouth torpedoed the title, which was financed by Live Nation and distributed by Lionsgate as a companion piece to The Weeknd’s studio album of the same time.

The MCU may not hold the same place in popular culture as it once did, but it remains a key Hollywood franchise. Marvel is responsible for the career comeback of Robert Downey Jr., who debuted as Iron Man back in 2008, but it also helped to establish other stars like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Chris Evans, among others. In the post-Avengers: Endgame (2019) era, new MCU movies have been focused on setting up a new generation of heroes, paving the way for new stars.
Black Widow (2021) marked Florence Pugh's first entry in the MCU, and she has gone on to become a major movie star outside of Marvel. Captain America: Brave New World will collect one final box office milestone this weekend as it paves the way for the next Marvel movie of 2025 to hit theaters. Anthony Mackie’s debut as Captain America has grossed $197 million at the domestic box office and $211 million internationally for a worldwide cumulative haul of $409 million. The film will surge towards $200 million at the domestic box office this weekend, which it should have no trouble reaching if not by Sunday, then early next week. Captain America: Brave New World is still in the lower echelon of Marvel movies in terms of its box office gross. It has earned enough globally to pass The Marvels, The Incredible Hulk, The First Avenger, Black Widow, andEternals, but it still needs $23 million to pass Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Last Breath, the disaster thriller starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu, has passed another milestone at the domestic box office. Despite dropping 61% and earning only $887,000 during its fourth full weekend in theaters, Last Breath has now passed $20 million domestically. The film has yet to break into international markets and find success, currently sitting at an overseas total of only $981,000. At the time of writing, Last Breath is the 13th highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office, finishing ahead of the international juggernaut Na Zhe 2 but still behind Wolf Man and Companion (Jack Quaid). It is also one of the top 50 highest-grossing movies ever for Focus Features, surpassing The Holdovers (2023) and The Eagle (2011).
Last Breath began its theatrical run with a $7.8 million opening, which was enough to make it the second-highest-grossing movie of the weekend, falling short of Captain America: Brave New World’s $14.8 million but finishing ahead of The Monkey’s $6.4 million.

Directed by Alex Parkinson, Last Breath is a big-screen adaptation of his 2019 documentary of the same name, retelling the harrowing true story of Chris Lemons, a deep sea (saturation) diver who survived an unbelievable 29 minutes without oxygen 300 feet beneath the North Sea in 2012. Starring Finn Cole as Lemons, Woody Harrelson as veteran diver Duncan Allcock, and Simu Liu as the stoic Dave Yuasa, this survival thriller aims to plunge audiences into the claustrophobic, high-stakes world of deep-sea diving.

These events inspired the nonfiction filmmaker Alex Parkinson to make a documentary, also titled “Last Breath,” in 2019, which was composed of archive footage taken from inside the ship and retrospective interviews conducted with each of the divers. The new version of “Last Breath” is a fictional recreation of the same story; Finn Cole stars as Lemons,...

Yes, this is the lowest grossing weekend of 2025 to date, but not for opera, as the specialty market found its maestro, Ludwig van Beethoven.
The Met: Live in HD transmission of Beethoven’s Fidelio grossed over $860k at about 800 cinemas on Saturday night, one screening.
Conducted by Susanna Mälkki, and starring soprano Lise Davidsen, tenor David Butt Philip, and soprano Ying Fang, the title had the second highest per-screen average of all filmed content across North America and ranked 11 at North American box office yesterday. Encore screenings will play select U.S. cinemas March 19 and Canadian cinemas on March 29, 31, and April 2.

It was a good news/ bad news situation at the box office this weekend for Paramount Pictures. On the one hand, their heavily hyped action comedy, Novocaine, starring The Boys’ Jack Quaid, managed to finish in the top spot (as we predicted). The bad news is that it happened to lead the slowest weekend of the year, with the $8.7 million gross certainly nothing to write home about. That said, considering that the movie sports a thrifty $18 million budget, it didn’t need to have a massive opening, and if word of mouth is good, it could become something of a sleeper. However, the B CinemaScore rating isn’t wild for an action comedy, so it’s possible it won’t be able to have as strong of a hold as the studio is no doubt hoping for.
Indeed, the race for number one didn’t end up being all that close after all.

Kicking us off, Chris Hewitt sits down on Zoom with The Electric State's Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt to talk about their favourite Russo brother, accents, and which one will attend the parade if/when Liverpool Fc win this year's Premier League title. [23:34 — 37:14 approx.] Then, Chris is back on the beat for a fun chat about lie detectors, Benihana, and dinner parties from hell with Black Bag stars Michael Fassbender and Marisa Abela. [59:08 — 1:17:44 approx.]
Between this week's interviews, Chris is joined back in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for another fun episode in which the team answers questions from the Empire Podcast subreddit that have them dwelling on numbers; discuss the week's movie news, including Sadie Sink's Spider-Man 4 casting,...

Last week, Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni Collette, topped the box office charts in the film’s opening weekend, beating the reigning leader, Captain America: Brave New World. The incredible survival story, Last Breath, holds strong in third place, based on the true events that took place in 2012 when deep-sea divers race against time to save a teammate who has been stranded miles below the surface of the water. This week, several new movies are coming to theaters with something for everyone to enjoy. If you’re not a huge fan of spy thrillers like Jason Bourne or the likes, have no fear, there are also comedic action movies and dramatic mysteries available to see on the big screen instead! Read on to find out what new movies you can check out this weekend!
