Seong Gi-hun, the beloved protagonist of Squid Game, is often praised for his empathy, moral integrity, and refusal to become like the people who run these deadly games. By the end of Season 1, he is established as a tragic figure, a man who has suffered enormous trauma and ultimately resolves to take down the organization that feeds on human suffering.
However, while these traits are often considered his greatest strengths, they also make him extremely frustrating to watch. His commitment to ‘doing the right thing’ often comes out at the worst moments, leading him to make reckless decisions, causing deaths that could have been avoided, while focusing on symbolic victories rather than real-world consequences. This doesn’t mean Gi-hun is a bad person, but it’s time to ask whether his most famous qualities were actually helping anyone.

Based on the original webcomic of the same name by Joo Dong-geun, the Webtoon series became a massive hit, debuting at #1 on Netflix Top 10 Non-English Shows and staying on the charts for 11 weeks. Now, after being renewed for a second season back in June 2022, fans finally have the update they've been dying to hear.

The problem with a short and sweet K-drama is that it can be devoured in one sitting and then leave you empty for days after. Of course, there isn’t really anything sweet about Weak Hero except the friendship between the kids, but you know what I mean. For many, K-dramas used to be synonymous with cringy romance and rom-coms that were “only meant for women.” However, after years of trying to sell the idea of K-dramas to a wider audience, we die-hard fans can finally breathe easy thanks to Netflix. Not only did it open doors for global K-drama lovers, but it also allowed non-fans to explore the world of K-dramas and realize that there is much more to it than they’d judged it to be. I bring this up because, for the uninitiated, the idea of an entire school-based subgenre may seem unusual, but this is a...

Netflix is expanding its content and production strategy across Asia, according to remarks by Minyoung Kim, Vice President of Content for the Asia-Pacific region (excluding India), during the company’s Apac showcase in Tokyo. The platform is increasing investment in original programming, adding new countries to its zombie slate, and continuing to test approaches to live sports coverage.
South Korea remains a major focus. Netflix’s 2023 commitment to invest $2.5 billion over four years is still in progress, and Kim confirmed that spending is aligned with or above expectations. Programs including Squid Game have anchored the platform’s position in global markets, with Season 3 of the series scheduled for release on June 27. Filmed in tandem with Season 2, the new episodes continue the story that drew high viewership and sustained global attention.
Alongside original productions, Netflix maintains licensing agreements with Korean broadcasters such as Jtbc and Sbs, as well as conglomerate Cj Enm.

Minyoung Kim, Netflix’s VP for Apac content (excluding India), has quietly become one of the biggest players in the global ecosystem at the world’s leading streamer. She has seen Korean titles grow to become the second-highest-performing content on the service — just behind U.S. shows and films globally, according to Ampere Analysis — with Japanese anime and drama programs also picking up significant steam in recent years.
Kim sat down with Deadline at the streamer’s Apac showcase in Tokyo to talk about Netflix’s growing budgets and wider plans for Asia, the future of live sports programming in the region, and breaking into the zombie genre for the first time in Thailand and Indonesia with Ziam and Elixir.
Of course, South Korea has become a jewel in Netflix’s crown, with global hits such as Squid Game, Kingdom and All of Us Are Dead produced out of the country.

Film viewership among Netflix’s Apac subscribers grew by nearly 20% in 2024, said Minyoung Kim, Netflix’s head for Apac content (excluding India).
Speaking at the streamer’s Apac showcase in Tokyo, Kim added that more than 100 Apac films peaked in Netflix’s global top 10 list for non-English films throughout 2024. These have included titles like Korea’s Uprising, Indonesia’s The Shadow Strays and Japan’s City Hunter.
Overall, Netflix members globally watch an average of seven films a month.
Kim also highlighted the expansive cultural impact that the streamer’s film slate has produced across Asia. For example, when Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular “City Hunter” manga series premiered in April last year, sales of the original manga, including both digital and hard copies, went up by 900%.

Horror K-dramas, the common term for South Korean scripted horror TV shows, have become enormously popular worldwide, including titles like the supernatural thriller "Hellbound" and zombie series "All of Us Are Dead." However, they've also managed to attract controversy, particularly from discerning Korean audiences, based on narrative elements and production details. One particular horror K-drama, "Joseon Exorcist," was even canceled right after the medieval series debuted in March 2021. Because of the public backlash to the show's historical content, including its contentious props, only two episodes of "Joseon Exorcist" were ever released before it was pulled off the air.

2024 was another phenomenal year for K-dramas on Netflix. Netflix’s release of its 2024 engagement report for the second half supports this. The report delivers some excellent findings and proof that Korean content continues to grow in popularity on Netflix.

South Korean movies and TV shows have been dominating streaming platforms for almost a decade, especially because of the boom of great survival K-Dramas. Korean survival series already have an established appeal and a solid international fan base, and they get far with a nice touch of first-class thriller and suspense. Recently, streaming platforms like Netflix have been heavily ruled by South Korean survival TV series that are off the chart in terms of content, story, and execution.
The unprecedented success of Squid Game put every post-apocalyptic, zombie invasion, and survival genre TV show on every viewer’s watchlist. These series are so intense and gripping that the audience can’t help but imagine themselves running from a monster outbreak or a dystopian future without water. Even though there’s no lack of South Korean survival-themed movies and shows, there are a few that are so good that they will...

In 2019, Song Kang got the lead role in the Netflix original K-drama, Love Alarm, which ended up being integral to his acting career. Before starring in Love Alarm, Song Kang had roles in other K-dramas such as The Liar and His Lover, Touch Your Heart, and When the Devil Calls Your Name. Based on the webtoon of the same name by Chon Kye-young, Love Alarm focuses on how an app that can detect if someone in a 10m radius is in love with a person affects the people who use it.
When the K-drama was released, it was praised for having a unique premise that isn't usually employed in shows about romance. Song Kang and the other cast members of Love Alarm give an incredible performance in the show, so it's no wonder that it helped the “Son of Netflix” gain popularity. While Love Alarm’s primary plotline is romance,...

Most Americans, whether they are fans or not, are aware of Japanese animated shows known as anime. Lesser known, but no less amazing, are Japan's live-action TV series that similarly push the limits of the imagination. From lovely melodramas to vampire horror shows, there are many options to choose from.
Often based on anime or manga, these series have supernatural elements and weird aesthetics that make for a fascinating watching experience. Shows such as Squid Game (now in its second season), Sweet Home, and All of Us Are Dead put Korean TV on the map with American audiences, but there are just as many great Japanese live-action series worth checking out. Here are some of the best recommendations.
Updated by Arthur Goyaz on January 16, 2025: When it comes to Japanese productions, many viewers are familiar with anime. However, live-action Japanese series end up overlooked. Netflix is a great place to find compelling Japanese live-action series,...

All of Us Are Dead season 2 is expected to be a “survival period for zombies” according to one of the show’s creators, a surprising but exciting approach for the zombie K-drama’s future. Shortly after the release of season 1, Lee Jae-kyoo told HypeBeast Kr (via What’s On Netflix) that All of Us Are Dead 2 was going to flip season 1’s premise. Rather than a survival period for humans, All of Us Are Dead would now be about the zombies trying to survive. The director was most likely referring to hambies like Nam-ra having to survive in Hyosan.
Assuming this is indeed the storyline All of Us Are Dead season 2 will follow, the Netflix original K-drama is in a good position to reinvent itself after an incredibly successful first season. Three years have passed since the zombie K-drama came out, and with season 2 filming in 2025, All of Us Are Dead...

Squid Game became a smash hit when it debuted on Netflix in 2021 and season 2 continued its unprecedented success, but the project's original plan means the franchise almost looked a lot different. With the effects of Covid-19 making streaming services more popular than ever, Hwang Dong-hyuk's thriller series caught everyone by surprise and became one of the most talked-about shows of the year. It looked nearly impossible to follow up the popularity of the first outing, but Squid Game season 2 broke Netflix viewership records, making the IP one of the biggest in Netflix's history.
With two incredible installments in the books, Squid Game season 3 has been confirmed and will be released in 2025 to conclude the gripping story. Netflix has had plenty of other popular K-dramas over the years like All of Us Are Dead and Kingdom, but none have reached the heights of Squid Game. The thriller inspired a game show,...
