Netflix has revealed that it will stream a documentary series chronicling three generations of India’s Roshan family and their contributions to Hindi-language cinema. The series marks the first time the family has offered an in-depth look at their entertainment dynasty.

The documentary traces the family’s journey from patriarch Roshan Lal Nagrath (known professionally as Roshan), through his sons, actor and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan (the “Krrish” franchise) and composer Rajesh Roshan (“Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai”), and grandson, Bollywood megastar Hrithik Roshan (“War”), examining their collective impact on Indian film through music, directing and acting.

Indian studio Yash Raj Films’ streaming division, Yrf Entertainment, is taking stock of its recent successes in the digital space while looking to the future.

The company’s series, “The Railway Men,” emerged as a standout performer on Netflix, marking a significant milestone for Indian content on the platform. The four-part mini-series, which made its debut on Nov. 18, 2023, maintained its position in Netflix’s Top 10 series list for an impressive 100 consecutive days. This achievement set a new benchmark for Indian series on the streaming platform. Production will commence in 2024 on leading Indian studio Yash Raj Films’ spy universe film headlined by Alia Bhatt, the studio CEO Akshaye Widhani has confirmed.

Widhani was speaking at Mumbai’s Ficci Frames media industry conference, where he was in conversation with Monika Shergill, VP, content, Netflix India.

Created by producer Aditya Chopra, the spy universe kicked off with the Tiger franchise, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, beginning with “Ek Tha Tiger” (2012) and “Tiger Zinda Hai” (2017), and continued with “War” (2019), starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. Netflix has revealed its upcoming 2024 Indian slate and Monika Shergill, VP, content has outlined the streamer’s commissioning philosophy and strategy for the country.

New titles on the slate include: Luv Ranjan comedy film “Wild Wild Punjab”; Neeraj Pandey heist film “Sikandar Ka Muqaddar”; scripted Anubhav Sinha thriller series “Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack”; Kapil Sharma’s unscripted comedy series “The Great Indian Kapil Show”; and cricket themed docu-series “The Greatest Rivalry – India vs Pakistan,” featuring top Indian and Pakistani cricketers.

These are in addition to a host of previously announced films and returning series across multiple genres. Highlights include Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s lavish period drama “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” and Nisha Pahuja’s Oscar-nominated documentary “To Kill a Tiger.”

“Overall, if I look at the slate, I think the incredible diversity that we are very intentionally programmed to is something that I’m very excited about,” Shergill told Variety.

The series tells the story of the hijack that lasted seven days. The massive cast includes Vijay Verma, Patralekhaa, Pankaj Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Arvind Swami and Dia Mirza.

Netflix and leading Indian studio Yash Raj Films (Yrf) have set a multi-year creative partnership.

The two entities will “collaborate to create films and series to bring defining stories to audiences in India and across the world,” they said in a statement.

The partnership will kick off with four-part thriller series “The Railway Men,” a previously-announced tribute to the unsung heroes of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. A cloud of toxic gas escaped from an American pesticide plant, in 1984, in the central Indian city of Bhopal. It killed and injured thousands of people. The protagonists of “The Railway Men” are workers at the Bhopal railway station who saved thousands of lives. It is the first production from Yrf Entertainment, the studio’s streaming production arm.

Eva Maria Daniels, producer of independent features “Reality,” “What Maisie Knew” and “Joe Bell,” died on June 30 in London, after battling cancer. She was 43.

Throughout her career, Daniels maintained longstanding partnerships with producer Riva Marker and A24, worked as a producer for The Mill and Company 3 and served as a consultant for the Icelandic Film Fund.

“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” wrote director Börkur Sigthorsson on Facebook.

Most recently, Daniels executive produced the Berlin Film Festival selection and Max feature, “Reality,” which stars Sydney Sweeney and was directed by Tina Satter.

Eva María Daniels, producer on the 2020 Mark Wahlberg-starrer Joe Bell and EP on the recent Sydney Sweeney vehicle Reality from HBO, has died. The news was announced by friend, filmmaker and fellow Icelander Börkur Sigthorsson. She was 43.

Daniels focused on developing original content with socially relevant themes, launching her Eva Daniels Productions in New York in 2010.

The most recent films she was involved with include Reality, which premiered at Berlinale in 2023; Joe Bell, which premiered at TIFF in 2020 and received a wide theatrical release by Roadside Attractions; and Hold the Dark in 2018, starring Jeffrey Wright.

In a Facebook tribute, Sigthorsson recalled how early on Daniels found a way to help Icelandic filmmakers by bundling their needs for film stock to procure a better price.

“This became her style,” he wrote. “She developed relationships with international filmmakers, offered opportunities for those whose talent she recognized but often lacked the means…...

Eva Maria Daniels, the Icelandic producer and film festival favorite behind such recent indie dramas as What Maisie Knew, Hold the Dark and Joe Bell, has died. She was 43.

Daniels died June 30 in London after a battle with cancer, her friend and publicist Jessie Cohen told The Hollywood Reporter. She was diagnosed in March 2020 with a type of Stage 3 cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes, but she declared herself cancer free in an interview with THR‘s Chris Gardner a year later.

“Eva died on the same terms as she lived,” director Börkur Sigthorsson wrote on Facebook. “She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next.”

Daniels most recently executive produced the Sydney Sweeney-starring Reality.

India is the fastest growing market market in the world for giant streamer Netflix and Monika Shergill, VP, content, for the country, has a clear plan to keep the trajectory going.

“A healthy streaming business, according to us, has to be built on the strong fundamentals of engagement, where we are doing very well, and revenue and profit as a global service. We are a profitable service – in many of our markets, we are on the path to profitability,” Shergill told Variety.

Earlier this year, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos had said that content watching grew by 30% last year in India and revenue grew by 25%. In a subsequent earnings call, Sarandos addressed the importance of pricing in India, saying: “We’ve got to get pricing and the main payment methods right.”

Chopra made his first feature film in the Seventies and during 40 years of work, left a legacy and a mark in Bollywood that is hard to forget. Indian-American filmmaker Smriti Mundhra is again collaborating with Netflix on docu-series The Romantics, which looks back on 50 years of iconic Indian film studio Yash Raj Films (Yrf) and its late founder Yash Chopra.

The four-part series is streaming globally from today (February 14), deliberately coinciding with Valentine’s Day, as Chopra was known for directing romantic films such as Kabhi Kabhie, Veer-Zaara, Chandni and Lamhe.

Mundhra has filmed interviews with 35 figures of the Hindi-language film industry, from major stars including all three ‘Khans’, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, to producers, writers, critics, journalists, and costume designers.

The reclusive head of India’s Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra, has recorded his first on-camera interview for “The Romantics,” a Netflix documentary series celebrating his late father, the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra.

The last time Aditya Chopra, director of India’s longest-running film “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” gave an interview was to a print magazine in 1995.

As revealed by Variety, the star-studded, four-part series features 35 leading voices of the Hindi-language film industry and dives into the history of Bollywood through the lens of the studio’s impact over the past 50 years in making Bollywood globally known.

Interviewees include stars who have worked closely with Yash Raj Films, including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi Chawla, Rani Mukerji, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar and Hrithik Roshan, and more.

Netflix will celebrate the cultural legacy of iconic Indian filmmaker Yash Chopra and his studio Yash Raj Films (Yrf) with documentary series “The Romantics.”

The star-studded, four-part series will feature 35 leading voices of the Hindi-language film industry and dive into the history of Bollywood through the lens of the studio’s impact over the past 50 years in making Bollywood globally known.

The streamer will release the series globally on Feb. 14 (Valentine’s Day) as a tribute to the late Chopra, who is regarded as the father of romance in Indian cinema because of his romantic films including “Silsila,” “Lamhe,” “Kabhi Kabhie,” “Veer-Zaara,” “Dil To Pagal Hai,” “Chandni” and “Jab Tak Hai Jaan.”

“The Romantics” has been directed by Oscar and Emmy nominated Smriti Mundhra, who created “Indian Matchmaking” and directed episodes of “Never Have I Ever.”

Amazon Prime Video has unveiled everything coming to the streaming service in May, and highlights include new series “Good Omens” on May 31 and the second and final season of “Fleabag” coming May 17.

Authentic Talent & Literary Management and Propagate Content have entered into a new development and producing partnership and named Galt Niederhoffer head of production.

The two companies will work together to focus on scripted dramas for network, premium cable and streaming, as well as non-scripted television. Propagate is financing the development slate, and writer/producer Niederhoffer will oversee the new division.

“Over the past three years, Propagate has formed development partnerships with leading production and broadcast companies and executives around the world with an eye to developing world-class content,” Ben Silverman, Propagate’s chairman and co-ceo, and Howard T. Owens, Propagate’s co-ceo, said in a joint statement.

The Propagate duo has worked closely with Authentic’s CEO Jon Rubinstein for the past decade, and they expressed excitement about the new venture by adding that they “have admired Galt’s vision and sensibility, and believe she is the perfect choice to lead this new enterprise.

The ranks of female film directors are about to swell a little more, as Katie Holmes confirms her plan to helm the upcoming adaptation of the debut novel from Annie Weatherwax – All We Had. The script is being written by Josh Boone (Stuck In Love, The Fault In Our Stars), with Holmes starring and pulling producer duties alongside Jane Rosenthal (Little Fockers) and Berry Welsh (NYC 22).

The story is described as ‘wry and sharply observed’ by publishers Simon And Schuster, and centres on a mother and 13 year old daughter, who find themselves existing on the verge of poverty in small town America, after their old life implodes. Holmes will play the role of the mother, but there is no news yet on wider casting.

While this news will almost certainly be met in many quarters with derision, it is important to note that, of late, Holmes has finally begun to come into her own.

When looking at The Romantics there is a simple question, did you like Dawson’s Creek? If so then you’ll probably like this. This could be said to be the weakest part of The Romantics, but the fact is there is a strange charm that will catch your interest if you let it, though overall still feeling there was something lacking.
