Oklahoma is having a cultural moment. The Thunder are NBA champions. My brother and sister-in-law just uprooted to the Sooner State. And, with The Lowdown, Reservation Dogs creator Sterlin Harjo is staking a claim as the state’s TV laureate (to differentiate him from Joy Harjo, no relation and our former national poet laureate).
A shaggy dog mystery-comedy in the vein of Terriers and Lodge 49 — which is to say “very much my jam” and “very much destined for niche viewership” — Harjo’s follow-up to one of television’s great half-hours of the decade/century/ever is still finding its way, based on the five episodes sent to critics. And “its way” is an endearingly meandering way, one in which the murder mystery at its center is only meant to be loosely compelling.

In 1969, John Wayne delivered what would prove to be his only Oscar-winning performance as U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn in Henry Hathaway's "True Grit." Though Wayne was far from confident going into "True Grit" (he'd just come off one of his worst films with "The Green Berets"), the movie not only proved a critical hit but also a commercial one, earning big box office returns and revitalizing the Duke's career at a time when he was in serious jeopardy of becoming irrelevant.
Had Wayne missed out on "True Grit," he would have only starred in one other film in 1969: "The Undefeated.

Matt Damon has been extremely busy this year filming The Odyssey, but before he stars in the historical epic for Christopher Nolan, one of the highest-rated movies of his career has returned to streaming charts. Damon stars alongside Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) and Hailee Steinfeld (Sinners) in True Grit, the 2010 Western following a stubborn teenager who asks for help from a U.S. Marshal tracking down her father’s murderer. True Grit is currently streaming on Paramount+ in America, but globally, the film has made a mysterious return to VOD charts in several countries, including Jordan.

Today we live in a certain type of monoculture which, as evidenced by the "Harry Potter" reboot series, has gone nostalgia-mad. But otherwise, things have never been more fractured. We're all on our own cultural journeys, becoming immersed in various subcultures facilitated by the internet and social media. It's for this very reason that Hollywood doesn't hold the kind of cultural sway it once did, as the rise of streaming platforms has sent the industry into a scramble to keep up with the public's increasingly fragmented attention. When you consider the fact that, in 2025, Nielsen confirmed YouTube had become the number one distributor of TV content in the U.S.

Empathy is critical to the creation of art. Donald E. Westlake was not a thief, nor was he an unrepentant killer, but he wrote about the kinds of people who work in these disreputable fields with deliciously savage aplomb. Patrick O'Brien completed 20 novels about the high seas adventures of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin during the Napoleonic Wars, but he apparently knew little about the practical aspects of sailing. And there is no documented evidence that Mary Shelley ever brought a dead body back to life.
It gets tricky, however, when you attempt to imagine the experience of being persecuted for your appearance or beliefs. To paraphrase Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird,...

The Coen brothers established themselves as Hollywood’s most prolific directing duo before unceremoniously splitting up, and now Ethan Coen has opened up about the reason behind it. Ethan recently spoke with Collider ahead of his new movie Honey Don’t!
Ethan revealed that after working on 2018’s The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, he needed a break, leading to Joel directing his next project solo.
I kind of got interested again, and we have these scripts, but Joel was working on his thing, so we kind of got out of sync. Now, there was never a decision by the two of us to do movies separately.

Ethan Coen has revealed why he and his brother, director Joel Coen, no longer direct movies together. Known as the Coen Brothers, they are widely known as some of the greatest directors of all time, making some of the most beloved and critically acclaimed films, including Blood Simple, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, and the remake of True Grit. 2018's The Ballad of Buster Scruggs seemed to mark the last film the duo would make together, as they then pursued separate passion projects. Joel directed The Tragedy of Macbeth, while Ethan helmed Drive Away Dolls, and now the upcoming Honey Don't!.

With the future of Amazon’s Road House film series in his rearview, Bourne Identity director Doug Liman looks to the stars for his next feature. According to Deadline, Liman will bring his next film, Asteroid, to the Venice Film Festival next week, and the project packs some serious star power. Asteroid stars Hailee Steinfeld, Ron Perlman, Rhenzy Feliz, Leon Mandel, and Dk Metcalf, who’s a wide receiver for the American football team The Pittsburgh Steelers.
Asteroid “follows a group of strangers who take the risk of a lifetime to travel to a nearby asteroid for the opportunity to mine for wealth beyond their wildest dreams,” says the film’s description. Liman’s 30 Ninjas will produce alongside Google’s 100 Zeroes. Asteroid is one of 30 films vying for applause at this year’s Venice Film Festival, happening at the main Lido di Venezia from August 27 to September 6.

Why haven’t the Coen Brothers worked together for seven years?

Joel and Ethan Coen’s last movie together was the Netflix multi-story feature, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which for the latter was an epic project to shoot up there with the scope of True Grit and No Country for Old Men.

Matt Damon isn't just a guy seemingly permanently attached to Ben Affleck. He's — with his long-time best bud — an Academy Award-winning screenwriter for "Good Will Hunting," with a Best Actor nomination for his performance as the down-on-his-luck math scholar. He's an activist and philanthropist. He's even got a good sense of humor, turning up in bizarre cameos in flicks like "Deadpool" and "Eurotrip," the latter letting him loose as a punk rocker with one good tune in one of the best running gags in comedy.
A steady worker since the '90s, Damon remains one of Hollywood's best and most bankable. At the time of writing, we're less than a year away from watching his turn as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," a film so anticipated that theaters are already selling seats. But not everything about Matt Damon is perfect.

It’s a battle of old school vs. newish school in an exclusive to Collider sneak peek of the upcoming dark comedy,Honey Don’t! Once again striking out on his own and away from his long-running and recognizable collaborations with his brother, Ethan Coen steps behind the camera to bring the second in what he’s dubbed a lesbian B-movie trilogyfollowing 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls. Reuniting with the director is leading lady, Margaret Qualley (The Substance), who will appear in a totally different role in the second film of the series. This time, she’s joined by Aubrey Plaza (Agatha All Along), Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and more in an ode to neo-noir films with a modern queer twist.

John Wayne made almost 200 films during his lifetime, becoming a true icon of the big screen in the process. He's less known for his TV career, of course, but that doesn't mean he never deigned to appear on the small screen. In fact, he popped up on the small screen throughout his lifetime, making numerous appearances on a variety of shows, including a role on a 1960s episode of the long-running Western series "Wagon Train." There's also Wayne's multiple stints on the seminal sitcom "I Love Lucy," in which he mostly played himself in situations where he became the victim of various farcical hijinks. Less well-known is the Duke's secret cameo on "Gunsmoke," a Western show that almost featured the actor in a starring role.
Indeed, Wayne was offered the role of lawman Marshall Matt Dillon on "Gunsmoke," but he turned it down.

Josh Brolin is currently starring as Archer Graff in the horror movie Weapons, which is receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews. Brolin’s performance in the movie received praise and reminded me of this mostly forgotten 15-year-old Western, starring the actor in a villainous role.
Directed by the Coen Brothers, 2010’s True Grit features Brolin as Tom Chaney, the movie’s principal antagonist. Brolin’s performance was slightly underappreciated, with Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, and Matt Damon receiving most of the plaudits. Here is why Brolin’s performance in True Grit deserves a revisit.

It was not a surprise to anyone that this summer’s Superman has proven to be a big hit for the struggling DC film series. The James Gunn reboot seems to have struck a chord with its lighter tone and fun atmosphere than the previous films in the Snyderverse films. They hope to keep that momentum by bringing in the Woman of Steel in next year’s Supergirl. While they share a heritage, she has an entirely different attitude from her famous cousin. What should we expect from the next offering from the Dcu?

Josh Brolin has recently crossed over into the horror territory with Zach Cregger’s new suburban nightmare, Weapons; however, the actor finds remnants of the works of the Coen Brothers in the film.
It is understandable why the veteran actor would find it seemingly difficult to shed his Western identity after working in the genre so extensively throughout his career, but in this case, Brolin may just have a point. Even at the outset, Weapons has a lot more to offer in the way of the wild chaos that comes with the spurs and cowboy genre than slashers and the Scream Queen culture. Let’s find it how.

Botched auditions in Hollywood — especially about beloved and extremely popular movies and TV shows — have become somewhat of an intriguing and sought-after lore over the years. So here's another one for those who can't get enough of them. "Outer Banks'" Madelyn Cline — who also popped up in the recent legacyquel of "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which we reviewed here — had the opportunity to appear alongside such acting legends as Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin, but she royally messed it up due to inexperience and nerves. Of course, I'm talking about the Coen Brothers' 2010 western "True Grit" — the second and more faithful adaptation of Charles Portis's 1968 novel of the same name — that earned no less than 10 Oscar nominations 15 years ago (it's somewhat outrageous it didn't get to win any of them).

Stop me if you've heard this one before. A drifter or outlaw is on a perilous journey with a young partner, who is either his literal or spiritual son/daughter. It's a common formula not tied to any specific genre. You can see it in gangster movies ("Road to Perdition"), Westerns ("True Grit"), science-fiction, superhero stories ("Logan") and more.
The best version of it isn't an action story but a road trip black comedy: Peter Bogdanovich's "Paper Moon," about con artist Moze Pray and his maybe daughter Addie (Ryan and Tatum O'Neal) driving through Great Depression-era Kansas. The legacy of "Paper Moon" lives on to this day. It has inspired recent stories including a key episode of "Andor," and the new Neo-Western crime thriller, "She Rides Shotgun."

After John Wayne was cast in 1969's "True Grit," some strict rules were put in place on-set. Specifically, director Henry Hathaway established a set of guidelines that would ensure Wayne was left mostly unbothered by the cast and crew, most notably forbidding any discussion of politics at what was a fraught time for the U.S. These were hardly the first ever rules ever established when it came to John Wayne, however.
The Duke had plenty of personal rules, telling the BBC (via The Express) about which roles he would and wouldn't accept. Anything "mean and petty" was, for example, off the table, with Wayne adding, "I think I have established a character on the screen that may be rough, cruel, may have a different code than the average person, but it has never been mean or petty, small." That's a fair enough assessment of the man's own oeuvre, although...

In 2010's "True Grit" — one of the best Westerns of recent years — Matt Damon plays Texas Ranger Laboeuf, whose pursuit of murderer Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) leads him to join forces with U.S. marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Laboeuf is a by-the-book lawman who also happens to be a bit of a windbag who likes the sound of his own voice. As such, I'm not sure Tommy Lee Jones would be all that flattered to learn he was a big part of the inspiration behind Damon's performance.
Back in 1995, Damon appeared alongside Jones in "The Good Old Boys," a TV movie that also marked Jones' directorial debut and which he co-wrote with J.T. Allen. Indeed, audiences probably weren't expecting Alcock's Girl of Steel to show up in Gunn's film the way she does, and it's absolutely brilliant. In fact, based on that scene alone, this daring writer feels brave enough to say that "Supergirl" is not only shaping up to match the quality of Gunn's big blue blockbuster, but it's plausible Kara may yet outdo her Kryptonian cousin's first big-screen outing in the Dcu.
Compared to Kal-El, a fella more powerful than a locomotive and sweet enough to rescue a squirrel in the middle of a city-shattering battle, does Alcock's cape-wearing alter-ego have what it takes...

It’s been more than 80 years since Superman flew off the pages of “Action Comics #1,” and introduced readers to the then-described “Champion of the Oppressed.” The hero has gone on thousands of adventures since his 1930s debut — “Action Comics” alone celebrated its thousandth issue in 2018.
James Gunn’s “Superman” feels like some of these comics flew off the page, adapting everything beautiful, inspiring and outright goofy about the Man of Steel. If you left “Superman” wanting more, check out some of these stories that inspired the Dcu debut.
This list will have no spoilers for “Superman” (2025). If it wasn’t in a trailer, it won’t be mentioned here.
“All-Star Superman” by Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely
“All-Star Superman” should be thought of as the comic book equivalent of the Christopher Reeve/Richard Donner “Superman” movie: there’s nothing quite like it, and it set an immovable gold standard going forward.

For a long time, John Wayne was angry about losing out on an Academy Award. Then, he finally won the Oscar for his performance as U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn in "True Grit," adding yet another achievement to his already legendary career. But the following year, his reputation took a hit when he gave what became an infamous Playboy interview in which he said some things that haunted until his death. Those things included criticizing the Civil Rights movement and claiming to support "white supremacy," before labelling Native Americans selfish for trying to retain their land and "keep it for themselves." It's not hard to see why this interview has lived in infamy ever since, and why it continues to recrudesce every few years, even though the man himself passed away in 1979.
The year after the interview was published, Wayne seemingly allowed his legacy as the archetypal American hero to take another blow,...

Spoilers for "Superman" to follow.
To answer the first question I'm sure you're asking after the headline, I'll quote the "Simpsons" episode "Marge vs. the Monorail" — "It's not Batman!"
(Though you can get a glimpse of the DC Universe's Dark Knight in "Creature Commandos.")
Now, onto "Superman." As critics, including the Atlantic's David Sims, have pointed out, James Gunn's new movie is the first one to embrace how zany Superman's world is by putting him alongside other superheroes from the beginning. This Clark Kent (David Corenswet) wasn't the dawn of the Dcu's age of Gods and Monsters, he merely shines the brightest of all its heroes.
During "Superman," Kal-El works alongside the so-called "Justice Gang," which is composed of Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Later, he also meets the elemental...

Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” is both a crowd and critical darling — and a box office smash, so you may be wondering where you’ve seen the cast of his vampire horror hit before.
“Sinners” reunites Michael B. Jordan with director, Coogler. They first teamed up for his directorial debut “Fruitvale Station” and have since worked together on “Black Panther,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Creed.”
The film broke box office records with the best opening weekend for an original film this decade, earning over $60 million in its first week domestically. The film, set in the 1930s Deep South, follows twin gangster brothers Smoke and Stack, played by Jordan, as they return to their Mississippi hometown to start a juke joint, but they are confronted by a bloodthirsty vampire gang led by Remmick (Jack O’Connell).

There's a certain similarity between The Shawshank Redemption, the Coen Brothers' True Grit, and the Mads Mikkelsen-led Danish film The Promised Land. It's no wonder that all three titles blew up on home video, in different eras and on different formats, of course. The Promised Landhas emerged as a juggernaut on the Paramount+ charts, consistently ranking inside the top five and outperforming much bigger titles. Most recently, it flew past the biggest film of Tom Cruise's career, Top Gun: Maverick, as it reclaimed the number two spot on the charts.
According to FlixPatrol, The Promised Land was the second-most-watched film on Paramount+ worldwide on June 24, accumulating 176 points on the platform. When Indiana Jones debuted in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (still the best Indiana Jones movie) he represented something entirely new yet distinctly recognizable. At least, he was recognizable to anyone who'd grown up in the decades prior to his arrival. Indy creator George Lucas and director of the first four movies, Steven Spielberg, have made no secret of the inspirations behind Henry Jones Jr. Aside from the adventure serials of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, the character's look was influenced by Humphrey Bogart's character in "Treasure of the Sierra Madre." But Charlton Heston's Harry Steele in 1954 's "Secret of the Incas" is arguably the most Indiana Jones-like figure from that era, with his large fedora and brown leather jacket providing a blueprint for Harrison Ford's intrepid archeologist. It wasn't just Bogart and Heston that formed part of the genesis of Indiana Jones, though. Lucas was...

John Wayne became arguably the biggest star of Hollywood's Golden Age via his mythic portrayals of Western heroes. In the 1920s and 1930s, the genre was the stuff of serials and programmers (some of which featured the Duke), but they were transformed into pure cinema when John Ford made Wayne the co-lead of "Stagecoach" opposite Claire Trevor. The unfussy yet undeniably magnetic actor went on to make a string of Western classics that included "Red River," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," "Rio Bravo," "The Searchers," and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." There was no one bigger or more iconic.
Almost to a tee, the rise and decline of Wayne's career follows the trajectory of the traditional Hollywood Western. When audiences got a taste for the luridness of Spaghetti Westerns and the revisionism of filmmakers like Sam Peckinpah and Monte Hellmman, Wayne, who looked a good ten years older than...

Jason Momoa has officially joined the new DC Universe in a surprising and fitting role. He’s playing Lobo, the wild alien bounty hunter, in the upcoming Supergirl movie. According to DC Studios co-head James Gunn, Lobo isn’t just a side character, he’s a key part of the film’s story.
Momoa, who previously played Aquaman in the old DC Extended Universe, had a clear idea of what he wanted next. Gunn shared that the actor sent him a short message that simply read, “F**king Lobo.” That message kicked off a new chapter for Momoa and the Dcu.
Lobo will make his first appearance in Supergirl, which was earlier called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The movie is part of “Gods and Monsters,” the first phase of the rebooted DC Universe under Gunn and Peter Safran.

Jason Momoa is officially joining the DC Universe in a new role that seems tailor-made for him. He’ll be playing the wild and rowdy anti-hero Lobo in the upcoming movie Supergirl, and DC Studios boss James Gunn says Momoa’s character is key to making the movie work.
Momoa used to play Aquaman in the now-ended Dceu, wrapping up with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But once Gunn and Peter Safran took over as heads of DC Studios, Momoa knew exactly what he wanted. According to Gunn, the actor texted him just two words: “F**king Lobo.” And now that dream is finally happening.

You don't need us to tell you that John Wayne was one of the best Western movie actors of all time, but what was his finest Western film? There are plenty of great picks in a career that spanned five decades, both with his regular and most famous collaborator John Ford and with other directors. Two landmark films with Ford often dominate the conversation: Wayne's star-making turn in "Stagecoach," and his unusually dark odyssey in "The Searchers." Both are brilliant shout-outs, but if you pay any attention to IMDb rankings, the director and star went one better with "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."
Released in 1962, John Ford's absorbing drama explores the clash between the romanticized myth-making of the Old West and the American frontier's hard-won transition to democratic law and order. That might sound like a bit of a snooze if you're expecting classic matinee-style shootouts and horse action,...

Tom Cruise and George Clooney may seem to have little in common except for this: Pushing through their mid-60s, the two stars proved this year that it’s possible to defy the odds and create strong third acts for their acting careers. And to relish the risks.
Clooney’s Broadway foray was a major success and so was its debut on CNN over the weekend. Having filled its theater for a month, Good Night, and Good Luck was re-invented as live theater on TV. For Clooney, it was a welcome turnaround: Only a year earlier, his popcorn movie with Brad Pitt (Wolfs) had tanked, and he was hearing rumbles about his politics and personal life.
Cruise’s eighth Mission: Impossible re-awakened the global box office yet again, even invading the Guinness Book of Records (do they really chart burning parachute jumps?). But a year ago, his budget was drifting...

Jonathan Joss‘ husband is speaking out after his tragic death.
The actor was shot and killed on Sunday (June 1) in San Antonio, Tex. during an argument with a neighbor.
The next day, his husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales provided alleged details surrounding the nature of his death, claiming it was motivated by homophobia.
Tristan began the post by explaining that he and Jonathan visited their former home to pick up some mail.
“That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done. Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic,” a statement read on Jonathan‘s Facebook page.
