After Julia sees the swastika tattoo on Nick's back, she runs a background check on him on the police computer system. Shocked, she discovers that he is using a false name and is registered as a serious criminal offender and right-wing extremist. Julia goes to the police academy intending to steal a weapon so that she can confront Nick. But she is caught by her trainer and so tells him everything. Roosen wants to find out what Nick has planned for his student and gives his details to a clandestine, far-right group of conspirators, with which he is secretly associated. A member of the group, Henning, hands on Nick's address to Ira.

After the attack, Julia wakes up in the hospital; Nick has disappeared without a trace. When she tells her father about a particular ring that the unknown attacker was wearing, he is shocked. He believes that this is a "Westwall ring", a neo-Nazi emblem and warns Julia that she is in great danger. Julia refuses to go into hiding; she wants to find Nick. Meanwhile, he wakes up in a guest house, injured. Keppler has brought him here for his own safety. At the same time, Karl returns to the sawmill on the old Westwall to report on Nick's companion and Ira comes up with a plan to find Nick through Julia. In her research, she comes across police academy trainer Roosen and discovers that his daughter is in a psychiatric clinic.

Julia's life is a dark puzzle. She starts to investigate her own past and finds a connection to Ira and an old sawmill on the Westwall. But the jigsaw pieces don't fit together. Meanwhile, an incensed Inspector Roosen confronts Henning, and it transpires that the far-right puppet master Henning is actually Badtke, a high-ranking official from the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution. He had met Ira when she was a confidential informant in the Nazi scene and had started an affair with her. She had gone on to join a network of conspirators that wanted to destabilize the country and take power through a series of bomb attacks.

Julia wants to confront Ira. She travels to the Westwall and starts looking for the sawmill. Nick follows Julia, so that he can finally tell her the truth. While Keppler discovers more and more clues that the group are planning a horrendous bombing campaign, Roosen talks to Henning/Badtke. He accuses him of being responsible for the death of Julia's father. The intelligence officer believes that Roosen could tip off the conspirators and so shoots him in cold blood. Julia, who is on the phone to Roosen at the time, becomes a witness to the murder and hears a clue that the shooter is connected to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. She informs her friend Lydia and takes off deeper into the forest looking for Ira - and one day later the two find themselves face to face.

In the forest, events are escalating. Julia finds evidence of the group's planned attacks and discovers the bomb workshop in the bunker. Karl catches her there and tries to kill her. But Julia manages to overpower him. Then she finds Nick in the cellar of the sawmill. Finally, he can tell her the truth about the intelligence agency's plan and confess his love for her. Julia tries to escape with the injured Nick. But as they leave the building, they come face to face with the fanatical Ira.
