Jon Bernthal Celebrates His Next Return as The Punisher in New Video
Image
It looks like Jon Bernthal is more than ready to give us a full-blown dose of his unforgettable version of Marvel anti-hero Frank Castle. After making his return to the Marvel Universe in Daredevil: Born Again's first season, Bernthal has moved on to a project of his own creation — a new Special Presentation (similar to Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special) starring The Punisher. In a video posted on social media, Bernthal appears thanking the crew for the twelve-day shoot and giving a wrap speech.

In the video, Bernthal shares his amazement and sense of accomplishment after pulling off a task that he calls "impossible." The actor was the one who came up with the story, and he co-writes and co-directs the special with Oscar nominee Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard). In the speech, it seems like only curse words can translate their hard...

Will (1981): What Is Its Cast Doing Right Now in Hollywood?
Image
Sometimes the hardest battles are fought in silence, and nowhere is that truer than in Jessie Maple’s 1981 drama Will. This film didn’t just put a spotlight on heroin addiction; it shone a glaring beam on the raw grit and complexity of a man clawing his way back from the abyss, all while navigating the delicate ecosystem of family and community.

Watching Obaka Adedunyo’s portrayal of Will, a former basketball star wrestling with withdrawal and personal demons, reminds me that “the toughest climbs reveal the strongest souls.”

It’s not just a film about addiction; it’s a portrait of resilience, hope, and the wrenching tension between self-reliance and reaching out for help. Loretta Devine’s debut as Jean, Will’s wife, grounds the story with warmth and realism. Years later, seeing where these actors landed in Hollywood feels like witnessing the echo of that original fight, the struggle to be seen,...

Netflix is bringing the heat this summer with more original movies
Image
Netflix will bring some major hits to us this summer with more original movies. Well, they hope they're hits. We'll just hope they're entertaining enough to give us another reason to stay inside and beat the heat. Now, where's that blender...

This summer promises to be a scorcher. You can thank Netflix for that. Oh, you thought I meant the weather. Nah, that's a topic for another time and place. I'm talking about the heat your favorite streaming service is bringing to your retro Nokia, your 87th-generation iPad, or your massive 105" mini-oled media altar.

However you watch, and whatever you watch, you'll want to catch these. You don't have to pay $30 for a couple of tickets and then another $40 for sodas and a large popcorn to be entertained. Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't go to the movies, despite what CEO Ted Sarandos says about movie theaters. All I'm saying is,...

The True Story Behind Netflix's The Six Triple Eight Explained
Image
20 years ago, Tyler Perry caught Hollywood completely by surprise when his low-budget romantic comedy "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" opened to $22 million at the U.S. box office. Though critics savaged the film, it received a sterling A+ CinemaScore from audience exit polls, thus indicating that Perry knew precisely what this underserved segment of African-American moviegoers were desperately craving. After this stunning success, Perry was off to the races, churning out at least one movie per year -- a pace that's even more amazing when you factor in the myriad of television series he began producing in 2007. Tyler Perry, whose base of operations is an Atlanta studio that bears his name, is a one-man entertainment industry.

While Perry seems untroubled by his continued lack of critical acclaim, he has on occasion attempted to mount a prestige film with the kind of socially important pedigree that goes down well with Academy Awards voters.

Why Alok Sahar From Star Trek: Section 31 Looks So Familiar
Image
Olatunde Osunsanmi's new TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31" is weirdly retro in its setup, feeling reminiscent of delightfully corny B-movies of the 1980s like Peter Manoogian's low-budget time-travel lark "Eliminators." The main character is Empress Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), the genocidal tyrant of the Mirror Universe, and she has been enlisted to be part of Section 31, Starfleet's ethics-free black ops organization that handles dangerous secret missions.

The film's cast, however, is rounded out by a rogues' gallery of diverse aliens and specialists, each one enlisted to help the Empress on a vital mission to retrieve a doomsday device. There is the shapeshifter Quasi (Sam Richardson), a none-too-bright cyborg bruiser named Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok), a microscopic organism named Zeph piloting a human-sized robot (Robert Kazinsky), an ultra-seductive Deltan named Melle (Humberly Gonzalez), and Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), a straight-laced Starfleet officer who is there to make sure...

'The Six Triple Eight' star Kerry Washington on shining a light on untold stories
Image
If not for Tyler Perry, Hollywood might have missed out on one of its most cherished talents in Kerry Washington. At the end of the aughts, before her iconic starring turn as Olivia Pope in the blockbuster TV series Scandal, Washington felt that she’d achieved what she’d set out to do as an actor and was ready to move on. “I was doing a play on Broadway — and I loved the stage, and I loved this experience — but I was like, This is it,” the Emmy winner recalls now. “Growing up in New York, my dream [was] to be on Broadway. [I thought,] I’m here. This is the mic drop moment when I now pivot and transition to something else.”

Then the phone rang. Perry was offering Washington a key role in For Colored Girls, his adaptation of playwright-poet Ntozake Shange’s lauded choreopoem about the experiences of women...

Macy Gray Branded “Sore Loser” After Storming Off Stage In ITV’s ‘The Masked Singer’
Image
US singer Macy Gray was branded a “sore loser” by TV viewers Saturday evening after she stormed off stage during her unveiling in The Masked Singer.

Gray – disguised as ‘Toad in the Hole’ – lost out in the elimination round of the competition in the UK version of the hit show. The audience had voted to save other artists, which meant she had to go head-to-head with ‘Bear’ in a sing-off. When the judges opted to save her rival, ‘Toad’ suddenly turned and walked off stage.

She was persuaded to return moments later when she revealed her identity – as guessed by two of the British judges – but then gave only one-word answers to struggling host Joel Dommett.

Gray’s behaviour was greeted by viewers with comments of “sore loser” on social media.

The Sun newspaper reported Sunday that the filming of the show was thrown into chaos, with producers left scrambling...

‘Six Triple Eight’ Movie Cast And Characters Guide
Image
When it comes to period pieces that chronicle real-life incidents, characterization becomes much more significant—for quite obvious reasons, as there needs to be a resemblance between the person in real life and their on-screen portrayal. Director Tyler Perry’s war drama The Six Triple Eight, which revolves around the real-life heroics of the titular battalion of all-Black female soldiers during the Second World War, presented the bitter reality of existing racial prejudice in the armed forces. As the movie introduced a number of historical figures while bringing the unsung war heroes to life, needless to say a strong ensemble cast was essential to do justice to their silver screen counterparts. Thankfully, the strength of The Six Triple Eight is showcased through the performance of its cast, stacked with some prolific actors from contemporary media.

‘The Six Triple Eight’ Review: A Battalion of Black Women Makes History in Tyler Perry’s Best Film Yet
Image
Tyler Perry has dedicated the past quarter-century of his career to giving voice to Black women on stage and screen. With “The Six Triple Eight,” the self-made mogul — who leveraged his success to build a production studio on a former U.S. Army base outside Atlanta — has found a story ideally suited to his strengths and interests: how a courageous group of 855 women of color made history during World War II, becoming the first such unit to serve overseas.

Led by Maj. Charity Adams (formidably played by Kerry Washington), the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion faced adversity on both fronts. First, they dealt with discrimination from their fellow Americans, later adding the threat of German attack once deployed abroad. As members of the Women’s Army Corps, these enlisted ladies did not kill Hitler or even carry guns, but were tasked with a significant assignment all the same: sorting a backlog...

Meghan Markle Supports Tyler Perry at Paley Honors Fall Gala
Image
Meghan Markle made a rare public appearance Wednesday to support close friend Tyler Perry as he was recognized at the Paley Honors Fall Gala in Los Angeles.

The Duchess of Sussex — who appeared solo, as husband Prince Harry was in New York at the The New York Times Dealbook Summit — posed on the carpet alongside Perry and sat next to him inside the Beverly Wilshire event, as he was toasted for his achievements in media. The Duke and Duchess both served on the event’s host committee.

Perry became close with Markle and Prince Harry after they exited the royal family in 2020 and struggled to relocate amid the pandemic. The couple originally headed to Canada before their location was revealed, and Perry offered up his Beverly Hills home — as well as a much-needed security detail — to them while they sorted out their next moves, all in total secrecy. The mogul...

Big Sean Brings Grandmother’s Photo to ‘Six Triple Eight’ Premiere, With Real-Life Connection to Tyler Perry’s Film
Image
As the stars of Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight reunited on the red carpet during the Los Angeles premiere of the upcoming Netflix war film, rapper Big Sean revealed a special connection to the story — which finds Kerry Washington in the lead role of the real-life Charity Adams, commanding officer of the 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion during World War II and the highest-ranking African American woman in the Army at that time. Big Sean’s grandmother was one of the 855 who served in the only Women’s Army Corps unit of color during the battle.

“I told Tyler Perry how thankful I was because it’s such an overlooked crucial piece of American history and Black history,” Big Sean told The Hollywood Reporter as he walked the red carpet with his mother, both holding framed pictures of his grandmother. “The 6888 battalion connected millions and millions with over 17 million...

Image
“It’s not just about setting time and space, but it’s also about the dancers being time and being space,” explains Camille A. Brown of her work on “Hell’s Kitchen.” The choreographer found that the 1990s setting of the script, combined with music from Alicia Keys, allowed her to explore movement from multiple entry points. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“Hell’s Kitchen” tells the story of Ali (Maleah Joi Moon), loosely adapted from Keys’ own coming-of-age journey in New York City. She lives in Manhattan Plaza, an artist residence in Hell’s Kitchen, under the eye of her over-protective mother (Shoshana Bean). 2024 Tony Awards could feature the most women directing nominees in history
Image
Since their inception, the directing categories at the Tony Awards have mostly been a boys’ club. Not only are the vast majority of winners men, but so are most of the nominees. But the 2024 ceremony could upend these statistics as more women are helming Broadway shows than ever before. This could finally be the year where they make up the majority of directing nominees.

This season there are 13 women directors on Broadway. Four of them will contend for Best Director of a Play: Lila Neugebauer (“Appropriate” and “Uncle Vanya”), Anne Kauffman (“Mary Jane”), Tina Landau (“Mother Play”), and Whitney White (“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”). Another nine women will vie for Best Director of a Musical: Sammi Canold (“How to Dance in Ohio”), Rachel Chavkin (“Lempicka”), Rebecca Frecknall (“Cabaret”), Maria Friedman (“Merrily We Roll Along“), Mari Madrid, Leigh Silverman (“Suffs”), Jessica Stone (“Water for Elephants”), Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”), and...

Diary Of A Mad Black Woman Cast & Character Guide
Image
Diary of a Mad Black Woman is a landmark work in Tyler Perry’s filmography because it has a talented cast and some great characters. Based on the stage play of the same name by Perry and directed by Darren Grant, Diary of a Mad Black Woman deals with the misadventures of a recently-divorced woman who lives with her street-smart grandmother, Madea Simmons. Even though the film was met with negative reactions from critics, it went on to become a box-office success and paved the way for Perry’s successful career.

With Diary of a Mad Black Woman being followed by many more sequels focusing on Madea, the elderly woman was definitely the movie’s breakout character. However, Perry wasn't the only actor who stood out. Thanks to the excellent cast and Darren Grant's excellent direction, the movie also featured some iconic and memorable characters that have helped make characters...

Tony Nominees See Uptick At Broadway Box Office: ‘A Strange Loop’ Jumps By More Than 200K
Derek Klena
Last week’s Tony Award nominations translated into box office sales for at least some of the contenders, with A Strange Loop seeing the biggest boost. The musical, which topped the Tony list with 11 nominations, saw a 213,871 increase in its weekly grosses, taking in 690,668 for the week ending May 15.

Overall, the 35 Broadway productions grossed 30,349,653, a slight 3 dip from the previous week’s 31,199,660, a decline largely attributable to the 1,054,792 drop in box office at Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which canceled four of its usual eight performances due to Covid cases among the cast. Moulin, with Broadway favorite Derek Klena now leading the cast, took in 537,705 for four performances, filling 91 of available seats.

Also losing ground was Lincoln Center Theater’s The Skin of Our Teeth, which canceled three performances due to Covid, dropping 58,736 from the previous week to 115,745 for its five performances.

Total attendance for the 35 productions was 246,003, down about 1 from...

‘for colored girls’ reviews celebrate ‘riveting’ Broadway revival and ‘resplendent’ Kenita R. Miller
Image
Forty-six years after the original production of Ntozake Shange’s legendary choreopoem “for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf,” a sterling revival has returned to Broadway in the very same house where the original ran for nearly two years. Shange’s classic work consists of poems performed by seven different Black women – identified as different colors of the rainbow – that chronicle their joys, triumphs, and struggles. This mounting features the work of Tony-nominated choreographer Camille A. Brown, who also directs. The revival opened on April 20 at the Booth Theatre.

The ensemble cast stars Amara Granderson, Tendayi Kuumba, Kenita R. Miller, Okwui Okpokwasili, Stacey Sargeant, Alexandria Wailes, and D. Woods, the majority of whom are making their Broadway debuts. The late Shange’s voice also opens the play, in a short address to a young Black girl that invites the audience to imagine with them the...

Broadway Box Office Steady At 34M With All 35 Shows Up And Running; ‘Funny Girl’ Scores 1.2M
Image
Broadway box office held steady last week as the production roster reached its full, 35-show season maximum: Though some productions remained in previews, everything that’s going to open before the end of the season was up and running, with no Covid cancelations or postponements.

In all, the 35 productions grossed a total 34,204,820, with attendance at 267,796 for the week ending April 24. Both of those figures were just about dead-even with the previous week’s tallies, with one additional show on the roster – Paradise Square returned after some Covid cancelations – and a slate of opening nights causing small dips due to press and opening night comps.

With an overall average ticket price of 128, the 35 productions combined filled about 84 of available seats, just a tad short of the previous week’s percentage (87).

The following productions had opening nights last week:

How I Learned To Drive, filling about 90 of seats, took in 265,830; for colored...

Thor: Love and Thunder Cast – Who’s Back and New Characters
Chris Evans
Even though the first Thor movie grossed almost 450 million in 2011, few people walking out of the theater probably thought the God of Thunder would go where Captain America and Iron Man could not and earn a fourth entry in his franchise. Sure, some of this achievement has to do with Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. completing their stories in Avengers: Endgame. But it has just as much to do with the revelation of Chris Hemsworth’s comedic abilities and the total tonal shift director Taikia Waititi brought to Thor: Ragnarok.

For this unprecedented fourth solo movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, Hemsworth and Waititi not only reprise their roles as Thor and Korg but they’re joined by a team of Academy Award winners and fan favorites. These remarkable talents will help tell the next chapter in Thor’s story, which finds him looking for his place in the galaxy...

Rashida Jones and Dominique Fishback on Recognizing the Power of Their Voices: ‘Our Words Are Forever’
Image
Before Rashida Jones switched from plans for law school to acting in the late 1990s, she was immersed in the arts. Jones, the daughter of entertainment icons Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton, grew up with the idea that “If you have something to say, you should say it.”

“It didn’t occur to me that there was a reason that I could be shut down,” Jones recalls.

But, Hollywood had other ideas — and, as a Black woman in the industry, she quickly noticed a pattern.

“I realized that it had nothing to do with me. There’s a systemic thing at work that I just happen to be not reaping the benefits from,” Jones explains. “There’s been many times in my career [where] I’ll say something or have an idea and it’s just washed over. And then 30 minutes later, an hour later, a day later, a white man...

Netflix Is Losing A Lot Of Movies And TV Shows In January
Image
There’s a lot of great new stuff coming to Netflix in January, with over 75 titles being added to the streaming giant’s library over the course of next month. Unfortunately, it’s just the way it goes, though, that we’ve got to lose some old content to get new content and a bunch of movies and TV shows will be removed from the site across January as well. Thankfully, this coming month isn’t a huge one for losses, but there’s still a decent amount that’ll be departing.

Of course, the title that most Netflix users will be missing in January actually leaves on December 31st – The Office is being removed from the service on New Year’s Eve so that it can stream exclusively on NBC’s newly activated streaming platform Peacock. As such, here’s another reminder to binge all nine seasons of the...

Man of Action: Tyler Perry on Producing During the Pandemic and Why He’s Weighing in on Politics
Image
Tyler Perry is entering a new phase — not just in his career as a media mogul who owns a 330-acre studio bearing his name, nor in his tax bracket, after being designated a billionaire by Forbes. Perry, who has consistently stayed above the fray for much of the time he has been a celebrity, is getting political.

“We’ve all been drafted on the worst reality show that’s ever been produced, and none of us have been paid for it,” Perry says. “For the last four and a half years or so, we have been dragged through the wringer, and it is completely exhausting. So many people are exhausted at the division, at the hate, at the pandemic — people are just exhausted and angry and frustrated. And if the people who bring hope [and] positivity give up, then the world has lost its balance.

“Negativity screams, and positivity whispers. So...

In the first episode, he — along with Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and his childhood friend Leti (Jurnee Smollett) — takes a journey across Jim Crow America in search of his father, uncovering monsters both fictional and very real.

Jayme Lawson and Zainab Jah play daughter and mother in "Farewell Amor"

In celebration of Mother’s Day I recently moderated a conversation over Zoom between actors Zainab Jah and Jayme Lawson. We'll be sharing it with you in three installments. For the first dispatch Jah and Lawson talked about their performances as mother and daughter in the Sundance 2020 film Farewell Amor, written and directed by Ekwa Msangi, and their favourite mother/daughter relationships at the movies.

Jah has previously appeared in TV shows like Homeland and Deep State but is best known for the Broadway play Eclipsed co-starring Lupita Nyong’o. Lawson is a newcomer and a recent graduate of Julliard who appeared last season in The Public Theater's production of For Colored Girls. She recently booked a major role in an upcoming film that you may have heard of, The Batman (2021)...

New on Netflix: May 2020 Releases
Greg Daniels
Looking for what’s coming to Netflix UK this month? Click here instead!

While much of the entertainment world is in lockdown and in danger of drying up their respective content pipelines soon, Netflix has claimed that they have more than enough finished projects and business will continue as usual. While that may seem to be an outlandish boast, it’s hard to look at Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 and not think “man, they’re really just not stopping.”

Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 are positively loaded with new Netflix originals, intriguing recent films, and even some fun new stock TV shows. Office creator Greg Daniels latest project, Space Force, premieres on May 29 and will likely be Netflix’s big blockbuster this month. Having access to Daniels, Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, and more will do that for a project.

Elsewhere on the Netflix original front,...
