I don't think I've ever watched a movie this good that I haven't heard buzz for beforehand. I watched this as a complete fluke because the poster image was cool and 6.8 is a decent score on IMDb. The acting besides the friend at the beginning, is excellent. The story is tightly paced and ultimately very logical which is always a surprise in this type of movie.
I watch a lot of movies in particular a lot of horror, and I haven't felt this tense in a movie and quite a while. This movie was evocative to me of The Gift, so if you enjoyed that I believe you will also like this movie. Highly recommend overall!
(Hunter Hunter is the last movie I've seen starring Nick Stahl and it is also very tense and memorable. I would recommend watching that if you enjoyed his performance here.)

And the premise is either entirely improbable by any stretch of the imagination. Or...this is a very true-to-life "fictional" depiction by insiders of this one hundred percent (100%) totally happening international thing of people like this.
Regardless. It is good fun. And once we are clued in as to what is really occurring, things get nicely tense and unpredictable. Do a lot of those things always make sense? Naw. Who cares. Are there so many things not cool with the entire deal and not just that one ingredient in the dessert? Yep. But hey, it's a crazy, carefree world these days.
It was great going into this movie totally unaware of what it's about. And that made for a nicer experience.
Oh and it has some dark humor in spots too.

"What You Wish For" had the potential to be a binge-worthy limited series. The premise of a down-on-his-luck chef impersonating a colleague for a wealthy family with dark secrets is packed with tension and ripe for exploration over multiple episodes.
A TV show format would have allowed for a deeper dive into the characters' motivations and the bizarre world they inhabit. We could have seen the chef navigate the opulent estate and its eccentric inhabitants over time, building suspense and gradually unraveling the family's mysteries.
The film felt rushed, cramming a story with rich potential into a short runtime. A series could have fleshed out the plot, creating a more satisfying and suspenseful viewing experience.

I was sucked into this film by the preview ('trailer' as the US calls it). It hooked me.
But, previews are easy to make, and often - far, far too often, these days - make the usual junk look good.
To my amazement, this isn't junk. What You Wish For is a competently written, well organised, pacey little thriller.
Actually, the start seems a little slow, but there's a reason. It's actually setting up the knockdown.
Rather than just showing you the rest of the film is going to be slow close-ups on people's faces and droning fake orchestra music over nothing actually happening.
No, this is NOT one of those films. This is a proper film, written and directed by someone who can write and direct.
Is it a masterpiece? What does that even mean anymore? It's not going to change anyone's life.
Does it stand OUT, like RIGHT OUT, in the sea of boredom we now live in? Yes, yes it does!
Good film. Recommended!

Not the best thriller out there but I'm so happy I found this little gem. I advise everyone to go into this movie not watching the trailer or reading too much about the movie. The idea is a never-seen-before one (this is low-key what I expected from the Netflix movie 'Hunger') and the major plot twist made my jaw drop. The cinematography was so much better than I'd normally expect from a low-budget movie, and the ending was incredibly satisfying too. I admit that near the end I didn't like the way things were going, but upon reflexion I don't think another ending would have been more satisfying. I wish more thrillers were made like this. And while you watch the movie, remember... be careful what you wish for.

Sort of like a B movie version of The Menu, What You Wish For follows Ryan (Stahl) a chef with gambling problems who flees to a Latin America villa that his friend is staying in. Ryan wishes he had his friend, Jack's life because it seems so much better than this. Well he gets his wish... but soon finds out that Jack's life wasn't as great as it initially seemed. This is a very weird and solid indie that I would say mostly works and is definitely worth watching. The plot of this isn't really anything new but if you like dark comedies you will probably like this. Although in my opinion this movie sort of flounders in the third act and the ending to me was kinda ultimately unsatisfying, but I would still say this is worth a watch.
Stahl who was a promising actor in the early 2000's sort of disappeared for a while and fell off the radar due to his substance abuse issues. Although if you look at his IMDB page for the past few years he's been trying to work his way back by doing smaller indie movies like this. What You Wish For is likely the best of the bunch. Also if you want the best experience when watching this movie go in blind and don't watch the trailer (it spoils basically everything). Nick Stahl definitely deserves to have a comeback.

If I were you, I would give it a go and not even read the plot because for me, it's what made me kept watching (I get easily bored) I'm going to be honest that I've read some of the reviews on here and the "bad reviews" were pretty silly.
Some say it should have been labeled a horror; some say the acting was subpar and some say it was disgusting etc. They all sound like Karens. First off, the acting is GOOD, and you wouldn't even notice it because this movie is obviously not aiming for some acting awards really. But maybe if your purpose to watch a movie is to look for flaws from the get-go?
However, it does have some plot holes and improbabilities/unusual coincidences, but it's overshadowed by how effective it is to keep the viewer engaged as the story unfolds and that in itself, I find it a pretty worthy watch!

I've been debating on whether to give this movie a seven or an eight. As far as thrillers go, this is a solid eight. When it comes to movies, in general, I'd give it a seven. Sci-fi exists, after all.
Sci-fi is my favorite genre, and this isn't sci-fi.
For some reason, people keep trying to call this a "B" movie. It isn't. I wouldn't even call it a low-budget movie. It's a movie that doesn't require a big budget. Nothing feels cheap, and it doesn't seem as if the producers were cutting corners to make it. So, I don't understand this criticism.
The movie's strength is, certainly, the story --which is exactly what should drive any good movie. It's an interesting story, with competent actors, writers, cinematography, etc.
I've read some of the other reviews, and some have called it "slow". It isn't. If a person thinks this movie is slow, I'd call that person an impatient viewer. The pace is perfect. It takes the time to make the characters relatable, and to establish an atmosphere that feels authentic. This isn't wasted time. It's just good writing.
Also, as others have pointed out, there doesn't seem to be a lot of buzz, surrounding this movie. My guess is that it just slipped under the radar. I can, definitely, imagine it being one of those movies that people would talk about. However, the lack of attention, works well, for the movie, since, you really do want to watch it without knowing anything about it. The unfolding of the story, provides all of the fun.
If you're into well-written thrillers, and are a patient viewer, then there's no real reason why you wouldn't enjoy this movie.
My greatest suggestion is to watch it, before reading any more reviews. Like I've said, the less you know, the better. The more reviews that you read, the more likely it is that you'll run into spoilers; whether they be small, or otherwise.

Short review: The synopsis for 'What You Wish For' was so vague I really had no idea what to expect going in. The little we did get about a chef with a gambling problem assuming someone's identity didn't even scratch the iceberg though. This film was an absolute blast from start to finish.
I don't think I'll ever forget the minute the ball drops in this film. It was said so casually and reacted to so calmly that I thought I must've misheard or misunderstood. I didn't though and from there on out we were on a wild ride.
The film is dark, but also often hilarious. It finds a great balance in terms of how seriously to take itself, certainly leaning heavily towards the serious side, but just enough tongue-in-cheek moments to realise just how out there of an idea this is. I really enjoyed this one. 9/10.

This movie is messed up, but in a good way if that makes any sense. Yes, I recommend it because it is a crazy premise but it makes sense how it is executed with most angles covered to protect the organization.
The actors are great, you would expect people no different if this organization was really operating!
It is dark and not for young people because it is a bleak premise from start to finish.
But what a ride. Once the plot is revealed, it is referred to almost casually as a task that must be accomplished, and there are complications which arise in the dinner plan.
This is what makes this movie so interesting!

Man, this film had such a cool concept...but ended up being a disappointing mess.
It had me hooked, right from the beginning, as soon as it became clear what was going on.
However, it ruined any potential it had, because it was rife with implausibilities.
Wayyyyy too many implausibilities.
With the ones surrounding the incident around which the entire plot is based, being too much to reasonably accept.
And it only got worse from there.
Which is such a disappointment, because the film was, otherwise, very entertaining.
I don't want to give away too much, because finding out what is going on is part of the allure of the film.
But, unfortunately, the lazy writing was just too much for me to get over.
It just has too many faults to overlook.
And didn't make up for that with anything it had to offer.
4 out of 10.

Nick Stahl played a chef with a financial issue in this crime thriller movie. He's a brilliant actor who embodied Ryan so well. The movie progress very slowly at the beginning, which can be a deterrent for most people to continue watching. But if you're like me, have a steel-like determination, then you'll get to the most interesting part of the movie after the snooze fest is over, which starts after about 30 minutes. And from there, the thrill kept on flowing to you like a stream of icy waves, chilling down your spine. And when you thought there's a hope for Ryan... Well, I'm not gonna spoil anything. What you need to know is that after the first 30 minutes, the good stuff are starting to begin. So, steel yourself, or find another movie to watch, if you don't wanna wait patiently. I did, and it didn't disappoint me.

Started watching with no expectations and was gripped right from the start.

This movie is criminally underrated.
The story revolves around a chef (played by Stahl) who takes over his wealthy friend's luxurious life who is also a chef by profession while on vacation in an unnamed Latin American country (probably Mexico)-only to find out that his new lifestyle comes with a terrifying secret.
The film mixes suspense, dark comedy/humour together. Each and every scene from start to finish holds value and is well-connected. Second half of the movie is intense and has some intriguing elements. I felt that the gore moments could have been toned down. Nevertheless, movie is gripping and has a repeat value.
This movie scores distinction marks on every department. I am already waiting for the second part now. The film ends on a note which open doors for the follow-up story.
I recommend everyone to watch this edgy thriller. Grab your wafers/popcorn and enjoy the thrilling ride of 1hr40min.

I found this movie on TikTok of all places... believe it or not, that app provides some good recommendations. And this is one of them. This movie seemingly had no advertising, so I'm glad I found it.
It's a slow burn thriller that explores the lengths a man with money problems will go to solve said problems. It also explores the boundaries that rich people will push, both physically and morally.
Overall, I'd say this is definitely more of an intellectual thriller than an action one. There's not a bunch of things going on- it's more subtle, and yet super engaging. This movie really keeps you going and is a good time.

In What You Wish For (2023), a struggling chef with a gambling addiction flees to a villa in Latin America to escape his troubles. There, he takes on another man's identity, hoping to start fresh but finds himself caught in a dangerous and twisted situation. As secrets unravel, his quest for redemption spirals into a fight for survival.
This waa not what I expected and completely threw me for a loop-I'm still sitting here trying to process what I just watched. The title seemed kind of poetic at first, but by the end, it felt like a gut punch. That final scene, with the look on the main character's face, just brought everything full circle in the most unexpected and haunting way.
The whole movie had this laid-back, almost chill vibe, but at the same time, it was so tense and messed up. It kept me on edge the entire time without ever feeling rushed. I don't even know how to explain it-it was just a super fun and completely twisted ride that left me reeling.

This film didn't have a lot of marketing, but it was really good. Solid story, acting and direction. There were a few things (won't mention so not to spoil) that I had issue with but I quickly overlooked because it wasn't that important. I watch a lot of films and tv shows, and this one wasn't even on my radar until about a week ago. It just happened to pop up somewhere so I had to go and find it via IMDB --> Nick Stahl. I think he is great, and really loved him in Fear the Walking Dead. He doesn't get enough props for his craft. Some people say this is a B movie, but I think only because it didn't get enough press. Indie or low budget doesn't equal B movie IMHO.

Take The Menu and personalize it, shake in some noir seasoning, and just a dash of The Moneky's Paw.
Nick Stahl plays a chef visiting a friend from culinary school after 12 years. Nick has something bothering him from home, but his friend also displays problems with the work he does being a private chef across the globe for the uber wealthy.
The unexpected turns start early in this film, and must be avoided to enjoy the morality play that unfolds. Less satire of The Menu, What You Wish For brings forth a thriller element that wasn't quite developed enough in the previous film. The pacing of the movie matches the lush locale, but don't be fooled by this. The slowburn mirrors the weariness of the chefs in the film, and the decisions that must be made.
I was hoping for something interesting and shocking, and this film brings that. Not a gasp! Shock, but more a lounging poolside and from the foliage comes a spider. Watch without trying to guess and let it unfold.

I came across this one by accident whilst searching Nick Stahl, and was both presently surprised to find myself enjoying it, whilst somewhat frustrated at the obvious shortcomings and oversights.
It's a solid premise, but aspects of the delivery are overly simplified and too exaggerated for a cringe free viewing. For example the Australian girls return to the venue, the police detectives insistance on questioning, our protagonists inability to string a sentence together under pressure. Was this our cooks first rodeo or not? There are just too many particulars that were stupid, inconsistent, or contradictory but were necessary for the story to work, and this is a classic characteristic of lazy writing and/or a rushed production.
That said, the movie isn't without it's charm (and unsettling content) and though it does deliver... more or less, it should have been a more comprehensive production.
Anyway, once again I'm not going to pick this one to bits as its not really one of those movies that warrants such close scrutiny. It is what it is. I'd say watch it casually and you'll be fine, its ok for a less immersive movie experience as long as your prepared to be a little forgiving.
I think 6/10 is a fair score,
