The enduring rom-sitcom subgenre changed forever when “New Girl” walked through the front-door of 4D. On September 20, 2011, bonafide television genius Liz Meriwether — then known for the Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher-starring film “No Strings Attached” — debuted the pilot episode of what would become her breakout comedy series on Fox.
Starring Zooey Deschanel as the terminally optimistic school teacher Jessica Day — nicknamed Jess — “New Girl” told the story of six friends brought together by their chaotic lives in Los Angeles. Hannah Simone played Jess’s best friend Cece: a fiercely funny and protective model wary of her friend’s new living situation.
At the loft, Jake Johnson, who had previously appeared in indie gem “Paper Heart” as well as the Russell Brand-starring “Get Him to the Greek,” dazzled in his breakout role as Nick: a dyed-in-the-wool good guy and bartender whose low self-esteem leaves him unlucky in love. Max Greenfield...

The up-and-down life and career of Scott Weiland, the Stone Temple Pilots singer who died in 2015, may become the subject of a film, as a script based on his memoir has been put into development under the title “Paper Heart.”
Dark Pictures and producer Orian Williams have picked up “Not Dead & Not for Sale,” the book Weiland wrote with author David Ritz, it was reported Monday by the Hollywood Reporter. The script is being written by Jennifer Erwin, one of Dark Pictures’ co-founders and a self-professed major fan of Stone Temple Pilots.

Netflix has released the first trailer for their new rom-com, Always Be My Maybe. The streaming service has had quite a bit of luck with some of their romantic comedy offerings, such as To All the Boys I've Loved Before and Set It Up. This one has a bit of a different spin, as it seems to be taking a cue from the success of Crazy Rich Asians by giving us a predominantly Asian cast, headlined by Ali Wong and Randall Park. Based on this first trailer, it looks like this is going to be a winning combination.
The trailer sets up something of a classic premise. A woman has her dream life, at least on the surface. A great career, handsome fiance and a glamorous lifestyle. However, things get shaken up when she has to head back to her old hometown and she runs into an old fling who...

Chicago – Actor Jake Johnson is expanding his presence in movies, and much of that has to do with his collaboration with director – and Chicago native – Joe Swanberg. Johnson and Swanberg have teamed up for their second film, after the success of 2013’s “Drinking Buddies, and are listed as co-writers in “Digging for Fire.”
“Digging for Fire” is a character study of Tim and Lee – portrayed by Jake Johnson and Rosemarie DeWitt – at some serious crossroads. They are in their thirties, have been married for a number of years and have a child, but both seemed stalled in the “is that all?” syndrome. When Lee’s wealthy client asks them to housesit, a series of events take place that separate them for a night, and allows them the freedom to explore some other possibilities. When I first became aware of Jake Johnson's work, it was in the film "Paper Heart," and it's a very canny performance, an interesting one to see as somebody's first work. In the film, directed by Nicholas Jasenovec, Johnson played Nicholas Jasenovec, the director of a documentary about Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera falling in love. I saw it first at Sundance, then ended up moderating a Comic-Con panel for the film with Johnson, Cera, Yi, and Jasenovec all participating. Over the course of those encounters that year, I saw a good deal of Johnson, and he invariably made me laugh like an idiot at least once per conversation. "New Girl" appears to have been the thing that finally opened the door for Johnson in terms of audiences understanding him and seeing him showcased properly. In the pilot, he was paired with Damon Wayans Jr. and Max Greenfield as his two roommates,...

Hoping to give the U.S. Post Office a boost in sales, Bella Thorne promoted the Cut Paper Heart Forever Stamp in New York City on Tuesday (January 21).
The "Shake It Up" star looked adorable in a pink and red top and matching pleated skirt with black leggings as she posed with fans.
Her fans' devotion was clear that day as everyone braved a Big Apple snowstorm to join the 16-year-old actress at the event.
Posting a photo of herself bundled up with her make-up artist, Bella tweeted, "Thanks NY for freezing me out @thetonyabrewer photo creds mommy T @bellathorne."...

“Yo dawg, I heard you like B-Movies, so here’s a B-Movie about two dudes making B-Movies and then showing their B-Movie ideas.” Thanks Xzibit, I’ll take it from here. (Yes, I spend too much time looking at internet memes.)
While watching a B-Movie full of grindhouse inspired gore and insane ideas always proves to be an interesting experience, I always believed the actual process of making said film is equally as entertaining. Be it monsters ripping the heads off of characters or Nazi zombies eating vacationers on a snowy mountain, you have to remember those ideas were created by a filmmaker. Someone actually sat there and said “You know what would be awesome?! Let’s mix together a shark and an octopus, get Eric Roberts, and have it cause a ton of havoc! Yeah!” – and thus Sharktopus was born.

From Being John Malkovich to Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Trip, actors increasingly find it liberating, even therapeutic, to play a version of themselves. This is the End is the latest film to mess around with movie star personas
The new comedy This is the End is less notable for its vision of Hollywood hit by the apocalypse than for the conceit of having its entire cast play themselves. It turns out that Jonah Hill is a prissy buffoon given to harping on about his Oscar nomination. Sweet, gentle Michael Cera is in fact a leering, cocaine-snorting lout who has toilet-stall threesomes with anyone who will oblige. Seth Rogen likes weed. And who on earth would have suspected that James Franco is gay?

Premiering in the Documentary Competition at this year's festival, Elise Salomon's "Los Wild Ones" aims to present a picture of artists giving everything to their work, in this case the performance of 50s Rock classic by Hispanic musicians at La's Wild Records. It's quite the change from the director who premiered "Paper Heart" 4 years ago at Sundance, giving early signs of a director to watch. What it's about: Wild Records is an indie label reminiscent of the early days of Sun Records. The label is based in La and run by Reb Kennedy aka Mr. Wild Records and is comprised of young Hispanic musicians who write and perform 50s Rock n Roll. Tell Us About Yourself: Her first feature film, "Paper Heart", which stars Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera and Jake M. Johnson, premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic Competition and won the prestigious Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award.

Fast National ratings for Friday, February 15, 2013
"Blue Bloods" and "CSI: NY" helped CBS win the ratings battle Friday night, with 8.8 million and 8.1 million viewers, respectively. However, almost everything was down across the board, compared to last Friday.
Kiefer Sutherland's "Touch" last more than a million viewers from it's premiere last week, with 2.6 million tuning in. In fact, the only show that was actually up was "20/20," on ABC, with 5.6 million viewers.
CBS was still on top of the mountain for the night with an average of 7.4 million viewers and a 4.9 rating/9 share. NBC and ABC were virtually tired, with the former snagging 6 million views and a 4.2 rating/7 share, and the latter getting 6 million viewers with a 3.9 rating/7 share. Fox came in fourth with 2.8 million viewers and a 1.8 rating/3 share, while the CW came in dead last with 611,000 viewers and a .4 rating/1 share.

Despite the dismal-and-dropping numbers for "The Job," CBS was still able to hold on for its normal overall Friday win, while "Shark Tank" kept ABC in its usual place in first among young viewers. Who wouldn't want to attend a high school reunion with Channing Tatum (even if it wasn't necessarily your high school reunion)?
"10 Years," the "21 Jump Street" star's other 2012 back-to-high-school comedy, features an all-star cast of characters (including Justin Long, Chris Pratt, Oscar Isaac, Max Minghella, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Mara and the seemingly forever twentysomething Rosario Dawson) coming together for their 10-year high school reunion, a gathering filled with startling revelations, bittersweet heartbreak and, of course, more than a few pratfalls.
One lucky winner (which could be you!) will get to spike the punch with their own copy of "10 Years" on DVD. That's not all, though — this giveaway is pretty well-attended, as you'll also receive Blu-rays of "Happythankyoumoreplease," "My Week With Marilyn," "Paper Heart," "Blue Valentine" and "Daydream Nation." It looks like you'll be skipping the reunion and staying home!

You probably know Mark Webber best from his role as Stephen Stills, the lead singer of Sex Bob-omb, in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." This is important because in Webber's new Sundance film, "The End of Love," he's plays Mark Webber, an actor who once starred in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." In real life, Mark Webber and the mother of his son ended their relationship. In "The End of Love," the mother of his son dies in a car accident. (As Webber admits, it was a "tough sell" to his ex, you know, killing her off and all; she eventually relented and accepted a minor role in the film.) In real life and in this film, Webber is friends with Michael Cera. (I'm going to go ahead and assume that the real-life Cera does not walk around with a possibly loaded pistol at parties, as the fictionalized version of Cera does in this film.

By now, everyone is well aware of the next upcoming superhero film from Marvel, The Avengers, with the ridiculously awesome trailer landing earlier this month. Joss Whedon landing the directing gig was a welcome surprise to all of his many, many fans, and it’s been good to see Marvel finding slightly unlikely candidates to take the director’s chair in their recent films with excellent results.
Word now comes, courtesy of THR, that Whedon has managed to finish filming an entirely different project in complete secrecy, and it sounds absolutely awesome.
With Kenneth Branagh taking the director’s chair for this year’s Thor, it seems somewhat fitting that Whedon has just finished his own adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play, Much Ado About Nothing, which Branagh himself directed and adapted back in 1993. Albeit, it seems like an unlikely choice for Whedon to do, given all of his brilliant past credits – Buffy,...

Drake Doremus is a filmmaker born to play the Sundance game. Last year, Doremus brought his sophomore feature "Douchebag" to the festival. When it comes to Joss Whedon's work, I've seen Serenity, Toy Story and Alien: Resurrection. I've never seen "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", I have seen a season of "Angel" though I'm not sure how many of the episodes he wrote or had anything to do with, I've never seen an episode of "Dollhouse" and I tried to watch a little of "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" but I wasn't able to get into it. So, when Whedon's new production company Bellwether Pictures announces he has just completed 12 days of principal photography on a modern version of Willian Shakespeare's classic comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" I'm not particularly moved. However, I love the fact he has a team of regulars he works with that truly seem interested in telling stories and are passionate about doing so to the point they do it because they love it and not for the money moves me immensely.

Bellwether Pictures proudly announces the completion of principal photography on Much Ado About Nothing, a modern version of Shakespeare's classic comedy adapted and directed by Joss Whedon (Marvel's upcoming The Avengers, Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). Filmed in just 12 days entirely on location in exotic Santa Monica, the film features a stellar cast of beloved (or soon to be beloved) actors - some of them veterans of Shakespearean theater, some completely new to the form. Surrogate Valentine
If Paper Heart wasn’t precious enough for you, Surrogate Valentine might well be your dream movie; for the rest, keep back. Dave Boyle’s deeply tiresome musical travelogue’s greatest virtue is its brevity. The film stars San Francisco singer-songwriter Goh Nakamura as a version of himself as he takes on a “method” actor, Danny (Chadd Stoops), who intends to model a performance and character for an upcoming film role on Nakamura, who brings him along on tour in order to teach Danny how to play the film’s central tune. Meanwhile, Goh struggles with his rekindled feelings for high-school crush Rachel (Lynn Chen, a charming figure in an otherwise charmless realm), who clearly carries a torch for the terminally awkward Goh but is involved with a sycophantic businessman.
The central premise of Valentine is not a bad one – there are certainly intriguing dramatic and thematic possibilities...

It's not a challenge you will win, folks. Dear Zachary will pummel you every single time. But, if you're recently watched it, or for another reason feel as though the world has stacked its deck against you, we've got you covered. Choose one or more among these 9 documentaries, and the air that life knocked out of you will re-enter and flow through your lungs again.
