Hit Record

A low budget comedy presented in a documentary format. Whilst the documentary format is overused, especially in television, it was very well executed. The cast, whilst not the strongest in the dramatic moments, are clearly giving their all and it especially shows in the comedic scenes. I will admit I laughed more than I thought I would, some brilliant scenes. Some brilliant satire on the popstar cliches. The light hearted and breezy tone make this a fun watch. However, this is obviously limited by its format and budget. Again, with the format and plot there are cliches that arise and feels too familiar.

Overall, despite its limitations the cast are clear having a blast and it shows through the screen. A pleasant low budget comedy!

Finally something new has come out! This one caught me unaware and I have to admit that it was a very compelling and outstanding movie to watch. Just as the Title of the movie suggests, "Hit Record" is one that will keep you entertained from the start to the end. The comedy included in the movie was simply amazing; I could not hold my laughter. The movie was well documented and the characters were well represented. Keep it up!

A documentary crew follows Shug, a high school senior and daughter of a Pastor, as she attempts to become a pop star and break out of small town Oklahoma. What she lacks in talent she makes up for in ambition, recruiting her friends -a pool cleaner and boy from church- to help her with photo shoots, recording songs and shooting music videos. The songs are not good and even the people of Choctaw, Shug's community, can't bolster her star status, but she will not be deterred. Shug delivers a performance on par with Christopher Guest, Parker Posey and the rest of the 'Best In Show' cast.

You will laugh out loud, but it's not without painful moments. Whether you've attempted to make it in "the biz" or not, surely you will identify with Shug's struggle. This is a good one to watch with friends (or the whole family if you don't mind some swearing) and no matter how mediocre the songs are, you won't be able to stop singing them - especially "Betta Be a Balla".

Hit Record is a wonderful movie. Despite the Cast being new in the Market, this movie is surely one you must watch one of this days. The movie brings out some cringe humour that is very entertaining. The story in the movie is very unique and easy to follow hence you are not left in the dark at any point.

Ethan Cvitanic successfully creates a very natural mockumentary that, just like life itself, goes from laughter to drama in an extremely fluid way. Surely the best aspect of the film is the direction: a simple hand-held camera that, indiscreet, collects interviews and involves the viewer precisely because of its amateur character. The low budget in this case is managed wisely and not as a lack, letting this amplify the naturalness of the shot. Cast and script could certainly improve but Shug's story is not just a naive parable of self-delusion, but also a piece of human life which and, as such, is extremely complex to describe. So, if that's the way, we can't wait to see his next work!
