Well, I've seen students do better work

Within the first ten minutes I was thinking hard about if this was a very elaborate Youtube spoof or a serious film. The acting is so undeniably awful it makes you cringe. The camera work is cheap and amateur while the sound and lighting could be done by an undergrad making their first drama. You think I'm joking? Look for the massively over exposed shot at 00:09:98.

It just gets worse from here. Very low budget, poorly written and astounding that it made it this far. There is a weird mix between shots that blew the budget and money saving stuff that makes things look just plain nasty. How many times have you seen a government agent jumping from an expensive black truck only to start setting up a fold out table for his equipment? Mix this with cheap CGI and you have an instant looser. Should have been killed in pre-production. Watch if you want to know how not to make a feature film.

Terrible Movie, Don't bother.

Terrible, terrible, what were they thinking? Bad Acting. Bad Directing. Bad Story Line or Script. Made me wonder if they get someone to watch what they've made prior to releasing a movie. I actually sat through nearly half this movie for a laugh, then I just fast forwarded in big chunks.

Oh, we two Aliens, we wont let them talk to anyone important and we'll keep them in an old abandoned warehouse and let a low ranking officer beat them up a bit. First 2 minutes of the film look promising, don't let it fool you.

Nothing good about this movie sorry.

Did I mention this was terrible?

Not Good, Not Bad, Watchable

OK this film is getting a lot of unjust hate here. I think a lot of reviewers on IMDB should give up watching B-Movies and stick to blockbusters. I mentioned B-Movie, I wouldn't really class this as a B-Movie it doesn't have any of the qualities you'd associate with traditional B-Movies exploitation, grindhouse, pulp, cheese, slasher or any raw or over-the-top vibe to it. I would class it more like a TV Movie as it is squeaky clean, apart from the nudity at the beginning. Not a film your gonna want to watch again, but it is definitely watchable. Some of the acting is goofy but most of it pulls through good, the story line wasn't too bad except for random fillers that took away from the film rather than add anything, obviously filmed in a rented office somewhere and the car chase and baby scene are pretty poor. CGI was good and for a low budget film not bad at all. The addition of the beautiful Sky (Sinead McCarthy) was a nice touch. Overall not great or good but not bad either, watchable.

How bad can a bad movie be?

I've seen some bad movies in my days. I'm also quite a big sci-fi fan, so my tolerance level was high enough. But this is one of those movies I really DISCOURAGE people to watch. The performances are lame, the storyline is ancient history, the sets are lame, and, except SOME computer graphics, the movie is just pure crap. Everything is big and shiny (the cars, the actors), but I can't shake the feeling of a high-school medium-grade film project. Why do directors, producers, etc., feel the need to create such junk? I would REALLY love to see less (if any) such "movies"... Just donate the money to less fortunate children or throw a party or something, but stop wasting people lives and nerves!

B Minus - but not a total failure!

Some solid ideas save this from being a total washout.

Have to be honest and say that production values for the average 5 year old birthday party are higher than this - yet it is strangely watchable - it has moments that make you wonder what will happen next and how it will all end...

All in all if Sci-Fi wasn't your thing before you sat down to watch it won't be after either - but if any Sci-Fi is better than none at all you might be surprised at the fact that is is, despite a very low budget, actually watchable....

And it does kind of deal with apocalyptic themes head-on, all in all B minus.

Horrible in practically every way

Blinded by the (formerly) not so bad rating, I decided to give it a chance.

At least it could have been some nice foreplay until "the one" with Keanu comes out. (pun intended) But it wasn't.

Where do I start ... bad BAD acting of almost everybody in the movie. Especially bad editing, sometimes there are cuts that have absolutely nothing to do with the current scene. Like near the beginning when you hear two people talking and at the same time see shots of people working silently on their computers. And don't get me started on the script.

Then there's the "logic factor" once again. 666 giant robots are landing on major cities on earth, yet there are NO people on the streets, no hysteria, not even simple curiosity. Everybody is rather calm, like this would happen every day. It's like we (the unfortunate viewers of the movie) get to see them, but nobody else, apart from the principal actors.

Like other people already mentioned, the superior aliens (in human form) are landing on earth. They have great powers and great knowledge. But a simple sedative knocks them out and an even simpler cell can hold them?

In general this *could* have been a nice variation on the original theme, that's why I gave it two instead of one points.

It may have been due to budget restrictions, or that they wanted to kick it out before the Keanu-movie. Either way, it did not do it any good.

As I said in the title: It's horrible in practically every way, don't waste your time on it.

Watch the original or wait for Keanu.

Better than expected

I believe one of the reasons why so-called "A" movies have in general better ratings than "B" movies is the marketing campaign that helps to brain wash with delicious trailers the audience long before they even get to see the movie. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was no exemption, but after all the movie was not really that good, was it?

Now "The Day the Earth Stopped" is IMHO much better than what you would expect from a "B" movie. Maybe the overall acting isn't that brilliant but you still develop an emotional connection with C. Thomas Howell and classic beautiful actress Sinead McCafferty. She reminds somewhat on Sophia Loren, or Brigitte Bardot but is still herself. How can one criticize on too much make-up? Cleopatra in Ancient Egypt or the Ladies in the 50ties utilized generous make-up as well. I did not think for a second about too much make-up. And, the role requires to portrait a mysterious perfect being from a different planet!! Sinead McCafferty knows how to act without saying too much, and it comes naturally, convincing, what else could you possibly want?

Also, I strongly disagree with the critique on bad film music. The score may not be perfect in all scenes, however, the composer produced several beautiful tunes that make me reach out for the soundtrack.

Cheers, TC

Movie Underrated

This movie was great and had a good plot.

Please do not listen to the bad reviews!!!!!!!

It is definitely worth watching.

I find it disturbing when I read the bad reviews on movies like this. It's like those people do not know how to have imagination or something. They think movies have to be perfect.

well written attempt at something deeper

there is really no reason to trash this film. Plot wise, its pretty solid with a nice tale. The effects are about what one would expect of a rather low budget film but they are OK. The cast is pretty solid, tho not Oscar worthy. The story revolves around a mysterious alien invasion that no one can figure out. There are religion undertones, and not so subtle ones at that. The aliens turn out to be powerful, God like entities that have come to determine the worth of the human race. Plan B it to knock the planet off its axis and destroy us. C Thomas Howell is fun to watch and he is a promising director. The movie moves along at a decent pace and never hits any truly boring stretches. I felt reasonably entertained and no, its far from the worse movie ever made like some sniffy Star Wars nerds commented here.

Remarkably bad

My grade-school aged children confused this with the similarly named Hollywood movie. I tried to warn them, but they insisted this looked good. The acting was so bad I left the room about 30 minutes in. My son called me back a few minutes later to point out how bad the *lighting effects* were. He's never critical of acting, let alone of lighting. Honestly, if a 5th grader is able to find serious flaws everybody involved with this film should be ashamed.

I'd like to say something good about this film, but I can't think of anything. At least in my case it was a free rental, so I didn't waste any money on it.

Bad, but a bit better than other Asylum productions

Once again, the direct-to-DVD movie studio The Asylum blatantly rips off a major Hollywood movie not just with its title, but with its story. Of course, the movie being ripped off is "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Make no mistake, this is a BAD movie, but I found it a little better than Asylum's other mind-numbing movie. There are a few okay special effects sequences, which come across even better when you know this was a REAL low budget movie. And star/director Howell really does seem to be trying on both sides of the camera. While his performance ends up just being adequate, he does at least score a few points with his direction, giving the government base interiors and a few outdoor locations a moody, somewhat creepy feel. But ultimately, the low budget and the screenplay defeat his efforts. Much of the movie looks really cheap, with little to no set dressing and few extras. The opening of the movie is somewhat confusing, starting at what seems to be chapter two. But the biggest problems the movie has is its tone. There seems to be no sense of urgency or panic, and although the running time is just 85 minutes, it feels like it runs at least a half hour longer. It's sad that Howell and Judd Nelson's careers have gone so low that they are working for The Asylum. Won't someone else with real Hollywood power give them another chance?

about as crappy as it looks - if it quacks like a very quick get-rich rip off, it is

C. Thomas Howell used to be an actor that seemed to be a next-big-thing kind of deal in the 80s, with roles in ET, The Outsiders, The Hitcher and Red Dawn... then something happened: he became a common garden variety character actor. And then something else in the past several years: he took whatever job he could get, or could try and drum up quick. In this case The Day the Earth Stopped is not only a rip-off, it's a rip-off of a *remake* of the 1951 Robert Wise The Day the Earth Stood Still. And make no mistake this is about as clear a get-some-quick-money-quick s*** going on here, no more no less. It's got a plot about as thin as an anorexic twig and less brains than I could think to count. It sometimes sprouts a moment of odd clarity among the many, many dumbs scenes (one of them definitely not being a 30 second birth that happens in the back of a van during a chase and then an immediate resurrection of the dead-from-childbirth mother by McCarthy's hot Klaatu rip-off alien - or is it her male counterpart that's Klaatu?)

Who keeps track when a totally clean baby is born thanks to bit-part-but-MAIN-CHARACTER-on-video Judd Nelson? It's directed with the flair of a 4 year old finger-paint from an AIDS infected oil derrick. Crew lights pop up constantly in a shot (sometimes as an "intentional" effect, other times it's just plain damn laziness), the roof of the set can be seen many times, the crew is seen running up to a black truck (me and my friends just had to chuckle at the lack of any money to fix something like that), and the beginning and opening credits alone spell what certain doom awaits with the *slow* crawling. The robot aliens and nuclear fall-out scenes are, to say kindly, completely unrealistic when compared to other baffling and stupid alien-robot-nuclear-fallout movies.

Did I mention the acting? Good Lord! Maybe the most random reference to Angelina Jolie EVER, plus, um, Judd Nelson? What did Howell do to drag you into this? Maybe a cookie? This is tripe, but maybe not the worst ever made.... just bad enough to leave that "horrible" taste in your mouth. Howell could've done worse, and I'll be damned to an undisclosed circle of hell if I live to see it. Maybe it's just worth picking up the video box at Blockbuster to read the back and see a "quoted" review (I put quotes on quoted since it was probably the director who wrote this blurb) which says "In the epic tradition of Transformers and Independence Day." Can you say yikes sandwich with a side of WTF/ha-ha dressing?
