Kho Kho, the pathbreaking sports drama starring Kerala State Award winner for Best Actress, Rajisha Vijayan had a direct-to-TV release on Asianet today with OTT release on Amazon Prime and Saina Play yet to be announced (Released on 27th outside India on Simply South OTT).
Malayalam's first sports drama featuring an all-female sports team, Kho Kho follows the story of an enterprising young physical education teacher.
She tries to build a Kho Kho team in an ill-equipped government girls school, amidst an array of cultural, financial and disciplinary challenges.
While the core story is good and the handful of lead characters, instantly likeable, Kho Kho falter in trying to hit almost every sports movie cliche. Contrived and corny dialogues in many crux scenes reduce the impact they should have made on the viewer.
National Award-winning director Rahul Riji Nair has done really well in capturing the Kho Kho game sequences with authenticity and realism and Mamitha Baiju and Renjit Shekar are good in their supporting roles.
Rajisha Vijayan is wonderful in a more restrained, nuanced avatar than we are normally used to. Her character's tumultuous back-story adds many layers to the performance.
Ultimately, despite its flaws, the viewer can't help but root for this inspiring team of determined girls from Government Girls School Perunthuruthu. And ultimately, that is what makes a sports film watchable.
A good one-time watch. Recommended.

This is one of the worst sports movie i have watched till date, story line is very predictable and the actors lack any conviction, never ever can you connect with the characters and the lead actress was a poor coach choice, bland acting and way too cold expressions..
If you want to watch a female centric sports movie pls watch CHAK DE INDIA.
It's not often you see a movie that beautifully describes the journey of a woman. Maria's struggles are that of every woman in the society. The character's empowering spirit stays with you long after you have left the theatre. Every woman and the men in their lives must watch this movie.
The amount of inspirational dialogues in the movie are exhausting. Corny clichéd storytelling. Rajisha is the only saving grace in the movie and the girls who are all 1st time actors I believe are also good. But nothing they did could save this badly scripted and directed movie. The quantity of music is also too much. Overall, it was a disappointing movie even though it had an inspirational theme.
People who have watched a lot of movies (atleast famous or hit movies in life) can easily get this.
If you could able to connect all the above dots, then that's what this movie is. Just imagine Protagonist face as Rajisha that's all.
You can become a story writer or director if you connect all the above points and come up with a story line.
- A Protagonist who is doing an odd job without liking or for the sake of family
- That protagonist could not have achieved the dream of their life
- That protagonist was a sports player
- They could not achieve because of the sports politics
- Now they are getting an opportunity to train a sports team (either with their interest or without)
- The protagonist will see this as a good opportunity to prove him/her
- The team will be small, unknown or incompetent
- He/She train the team. Players first won't respect them and then later realizes their mistake
- The team will face the same politics Protagonist faced
- Protagonist will achieve with the team. Expose the politics to public.
