Consider the story of Kala as Milk in a Milk Boiler, you first put the Milk inside the boiler, wait for it to boil, and finally, when it has reached its temperature it blows its whistle. Similarly, in Kala, you have an initial period for the story to warm up before it blows its whistle endlessly. To some, this initial period is a test of patience, but for others, it is an interesting build-up for what lies ahead. As the scene opens, there is a quote by Oscar Wilde written on the screen that says "Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live", the quote clearly represents Shaji, and the selfishness of his triggers the Antagonist. Kala is no weak-hearted person's watch, nor is it kid or family-friendly. There is a depiction of violence in the most extreme manner, there is a pile of cuss words, and sometimes it is very creepy too. Tovino's acting career can be split into two; before and after Kala, because this character played by him is on a completely different tangent, and then there is Sumesh Moor who stands head-to-head with Tovino with his impeccable performance. Particularly emphasizing the brilliant technical side of this movie which includes cinematography, virtual effects, editing, foley, color grading, background music, sound designing, and fight choreography. Kala sticks to what it promised; The feel-bad movie of the year, but views on it are highly subjective. Applauding the entire team for bringing up a raw and brutal subject to Malayalam Cinema.
Kala is a must-watch for people who are into an immersive theatrical experience. The immersive sound design, editing, cinematography and direction should be appreciated. The story is simple and since the film doesn't spoon-feed the inner meaning of the story, some may find it a bit hard to comprehend but still if you're a fan of a theatrical experience, you can definitely go for this one. This movie is best experienced in a theatre.
The story starts almost close to half way through and till than it's all just stylish shots, trying too hard to bring a feel of thrill and anticipation. There is no true thing or character you can hook into. You can get some bits and pieces of what each one and wanting, but it's like, WHY? I mean why are you watching it, it feels. But even later when you do realize, relate or something it's like meaningless, like was this the reason?
Technically speaking it's more like a short film, dragged to be a feature film, while posing as if we are debating something too psychological issues and human , animal behaviour as such. Same thing Jallikattu did but even there too it's more like few American European filmmakers concept being pulled and gave a Indian context. Both this and Jallikkatu are more or less similar, but Jallikkatu had bit of story and characters to think about, but here they delay it so late. It.
Let me tell something to all regional especially new film makers, specially from Malayalam and Tamil filmmakers who are trying too hard to prove that they are doing some crazy good films, while they aren't. It's because they got to stop trying to be fake philosophers or psychologist or film nerd while all many can see is that, you guys are copy pasting European, American, Iranian film concepts and recreate posing as though no one can get it, projecting as though we are new age filmmakers. No please don't. Be genuine to yourself.
There is a quote, "It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so!".
There is this series of such pretentious films from many filmmakers coming since few years now. It come across so fake, so deliberate, so pretentious and someone who studied films and watched world cinema for years will pick it and know what you guys are doing. This film and many suffers because of that. It's like Karan Johar trying to act like he is greatest filmmaker, while all he knows and good at is fashion, making actors being swanky, fake heroes! Many new films from regional cinema as heading to that direction.
This movie on the outer layer looks cool, inside tries too hard but so makes it so bad. Surely there are few good films, the thing is if you be genuinely brilliant or smart or good, you try less to impress, and more to tell a story. Stop trying to impress and things will fall in place.

First half is good and moving on.... second half is just a bloody brawl with too much of violence... The second half is dragged too much and it is definitely not a mainstream movie material...
