The place names, Gibsons, Sunshine Coast, and Lower Mainland, are indeed real places in southwest British Columbia. Gibsons, as well as the Sunshine Coast are approximately 50 kilometers northwest of the City of Vancouver, bounded by Vancouver Island to the West. The Lower Mainland is the general region of southwest British Columbia encompassing Vancouver east to the Fraser Valley.
The series is set and filmed in Gibsons, British Columbia, the same setting as the iconic Canadian television series The Beachcombers (1972).
In the book series, Karl Alberg was a former Staff Sergeant with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Rossif Sutherland is the son of Francine Racette and the late Donald Sutherland, and the half-brother of Kiefer Sutherland.
