This film is inspired by the true story of Bernard Jordan, a British World War II veteran who slipped out of his nursing home in England in 2014, wearing his war medals pinned to a jacket under his raincoat. He traveled by bus and ferry to France to attend commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
Jordan announced his intention to make a similar escape in 2015 to attend the next anniversary. He died peacefully at home in The Pines on Jan. 6, 2015.

Pierce Brosnan was 70 years old when this movie was made. His character, Artie Crawford, was 92 & 3/4 when he secretly escaped his care home to return to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day landings. Bernard Jordan, on whom this film was based, was 89 when he walked out of The Pines care home in Hove, England on June 5, 2014 at 10:30 am, to return to Normandy for the 70th anniversary of D-Day landings.
Second film in which Jürgen Prochnow has sung 'It's a long way to Tipperary.' El submarino (1981) being the first.
The story-line bears a striking resemblance to the theatrically released film El Último Escape (2023), starring Sir Michael Caine. This would appear to be just a coincidence but because of the strong similarities and close time of release (it was released a few weeks earlier),
Ingenious Media decided to sell the film straight to home viewing platforms.
