Mafia: Definitive Edition (2020)

Mafia: Definitive Edition

9/10

Better than most organized crime documentaries, movies and novels

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of the Czech action-adventure game of the same title released eighteen years earlier. This definite edition has been recreated entirely with new graphics, new soundtrack and new voice actors. It has been created by American developer Hangar 13 and released by American publisher 2K Games for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows.

The characters, locations and story are exactly the same as in the original game. The players incarnate young cab driver Thomas Angelo who is strong-armed by two members of the Salieri family into helping them escape an ambush by the rival Morello family in 1930. Thomas Angelo initially doesn't want to join the Salieri family but changes his mind when members of the Morello family ambush him and destroy his cab. He wants to get his revenge and earn some money during the Great Depression. Thanks to his loyalty and dedication, Thomas Angelo slowly climbs the career ladder and gets more and more important missions done such as competing in a car racing competition and assassinating a corrupt politician. The made man also begins a relationship with the daughter of Salieri's bartender and has finally found a place he likes to call home. Cracks start to show when Thomas Angelo starts questioning some of his missions and realizes that Don Salieri is hiding something from the rest of the family. The conflicted rising start must now choose between loyalty and convictions in the best interest of his family, friends and himself.

This new definitive edition convinces on numerous levels. The graphics are absolutely stunning and bring the era of the Great Depression in the United States of America to life in a realistic way. The soundtrack is immersive, diversified and cinematic and especially the two radio channels one can listen to while driving a car are particularly entertaining. The controls are much more fluid than in the original game and certainly increase the enjoyment of playing this game.

The only negative element is that the story of this game is exactly the same as in the original game. It would have been great to add some side missions or perhaps to offer an alternative ending. Those who have played the original game will play this one for nostalgic reasons but won't get any innovation or even surprises here.

Despite that one particular flaw, Mafia: Definitive Edition is the best organized crime game you could possibly imagine. Anyone who likes action, crime and stealth games should definitely enjoy this release. It's much more concise than numerous contemporary open-world video games and convinces with immersive atmosphere, fascinating characters and a gripping story line. This approach isn't old-fashioned but very focused instead which is an element I am missing in franchises like Grand Theft Auto for instance. Sometimes, a little bit less can be so much more and this is precisely the case here.

A Successful Remake by Hangar 13

The Voice acting is on top of this game, the characters faces have lot changes but still identical. the characters dialogue are more variety and more emotion than the original. the gameplay mechanics still same from mafia 3 but not repetitive and more simpler. worth to play and not disappointing, still the best story written game I have ever played

a legendary remake

I was hooked on this game i couldn't get it out of my mind and boy they did a outstanding job its elemental craftwork from 2002 now updated enhancements for the 2020's Andrew Bongiorno is the new voice and model for tommy this time and he steals the show. I must point out that this is not like mafia 2 where you can dine this is basically 2002's mafia with modern day enhancements the cars sound so real from engine heat ticking to clutch gear shifts and the world and tone is so beautiful

An awesome experience of a epic mafia saga

This game will blow your mind, i bought this game yesterday and played 5 chapters and it's awesome. The dialogue, the story, the graphic and the enviroment. Everything in this game is awesome and it was worth it. To be honest i haven't played the original but i must say they have put good work on this game to make it look nice. I give this game 10 out of 10 and i hope this game will be known as the game of the year 2020.

Buy this now you will not regret.

Simply WOW

Not the best graphics, not the best music....but for an almost 20 year old game - remake/ remaster.....OMFG they have 180% delivered. I mean I had the original in my younger days and I never really appreciated the story within the game at that time, but playing today for 8 hours solid, I realised that this is an absolute brilliant story/game. Everything is overly dramatic giving an almost movie like experience. I cannot criticise anything within the gameplay itself. This game goes way beyond my expectations and I'm so buzzed to play the Mafia 2 definitive edition after this! Absolutely well done for making the perfect remaster.

Playing this in 2025, April 20th

I just got a new curved monitor and this was the perfect game to start it with. The 2560x1440 resolution is perfect for the game. I have never played the original hence experiencing the storyline for the first time, and the fact that this is a remake blew my mind. The storyline is engaging and easy to follow through, the characters well studied. There was a lot of driving in the beginning which I don't enjoy so much but thereafter the gameplay, the movement, the world around it just felt amazing to dive into. The takedowns are kinda funny, but the shooting mechanisms are smooth, not a lot of variety in gun choices but still realistic and fun to blast through. I had a great time playing this game.

This is a unique franchise

Honestly, without even having played the original Mafia back when people were so nuts about it, I know how it looked like. I know what people thought of it. And I can even get people's frustrations who were hardcore fans. There could be changes in the style which understandably left a few people disappointed.

But this is a remake done extremely well. First of all, Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 don't hold back when it comes to storytelling. People take issue with boring gameplay. It's not bad, it's just more or less the same in all three of the games. You drive. You shoot. You watch the story unfold. You drive. You shoot. You watch the story unfold. Oooh! Check this collectible out! Drive some more. Shoot some more. Watch the story unfold.

I'd get it if you don't like that. But the gameplay isn't bad. It's just not as diverse as we expect from AAA games nowadays. But, what is even more important, the story is PHENOMENAL. Finally watching where it all started, after knowing how it turns out in the next two, I can only catch myself at the edge of my seat with every next cutscene. And thanks to the visuals, it practically looks like a movie.

I can't get over the fact that we're living in that time where we could watch what used to be a bunch of awkward animated blocks turn into almost lifelike cinematic experience. It is beautiful. And well voiced. And with this definitive edition, I think the trilogy is surely one of the best trilogies out there. Not for everyone! But IT IS good!

Faithful, Brilliant Remake

I am a huge fan of the mafia franchise. Especially 2 and 3. I had never played the original mafia. It was always a bit too expensive on steam, and I didn't feel that in the condition it was in, that it was worth it. The mafia franchise went dark after 2018. Mafia 3's reception was pretty negative. I personally thought it was a great game, while flawed. I was just worried we wouldn't be seeing anything soon. Then ya know, the rumors started spreading about mafia 4. We end up getting this masterpiece, and I ain't complaining. Mafia definitive edition is awesome. I got it for 40 dollars, and I feel I have ripped off the devs. The game is incredibly immersive and beautiful on my pc. Runs a smooth 60 fps on my gtx 1660, and the graphics are just extraordinary. The story itself is amazing after 18 years. Obviously, hangar 13 has spiced the story up after that time. It's very faithful to the original, and told in a much better, more modern way. The characters all sound and act fluently, and have distinct personalities. The dialogue is amazing. With some especially stand out scenes. The characters also look amazing. The lighting is so much better than in 3. The gameplay itself is awesome and exhilarating as well. There are some glitches, but I am sure they'll be fixed in time. On pc, the screen will freeze, and it can be quite annoying. Also, the cars can flicker very infrequently. A non technical thing I'm not crazy about is the free roam. I adore the map in all of its glory, but the free ride mode is underwhelming. There's no real interactivity. I honestly hope hangar 13 gives it a little more time. I do really feel they knocked it out of the park with this one tho. They had a rough start on the gaming industry, and imo, they've fully redeemed themselves. I just can't recommend this game anymore. It's worth the price and then some!

Wow!

I just picked the game up today 11/11/2020, just finished the first mission and all I can say is WOW! I was a little worried to be honest. I didn't think Hanger 13 had this in them. I loved Mafia 2 and was ecstatic for Mafia 3, however I was a little let down. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game but needed about 6-9 month for polish. When I first started this game, I was hooked. Top notch voice acting, graphic and overall feel was great. A great remake that is very well done. Congratulations Hanger 13:

decent for a remake, a let down for die hard fans

The original Mafia (2002) is one of my favorite PC games ever. When I heard about the remake I was skeptical. Overall they did a good job but die hard fans of the original might be disappointed at what's missing here. You don't learn how to lock pick individual cars like in the original , the narration from the main character is gone, lucas bartones side missions got moved into the free ride mode, that now combines free ride and free ride extreme from the original. Your garage is just a menu like in Mafia 3, no more walking up and choosing your car from a classic car graphics. Nice graphics but the things I loved about the original are gone or cut back. Deserving of a 7 or 8 for effort.

Mafia Video Game Boasts Superb Setting and Storyline, But Hampered by Outdated Gameplay Mechanics

The video game "Mafia" boasts a superb setting and a fitting storyline, set in the fictional city of Lost Heaven during the 1930s in the United States. The sequences and, especially, the facial animations of the characters are fantastically executed, thereby contributing to the game's immersive qualities. If I were to evaluate solely on these merits, I would confidently rate the game 7, if not 8 out of 10 stars. However, the game is hampered by outdated and often imprecise gameplay mechanics. Movements are executed rather vaguely and coarsely than precisely. Additionally, the camera can be unpredictable, and the driving mechanics often make vehicular chases tedious instead of fun and exciting. While the game initially provided ample enjoyment, my expectations were not fully met due to the game's gameplay inadequacies. Consequently, I played the game less and less, sometimes only completing one chapter in a week. Regrettably, despite the promising setting and intriguing characters, "Mafia" ultimately proved to be a disappointment.

A mob movie classic

10/10, S tier. My god this game was incredible. So wrongly seen as a GTA style clone. I still think red dead redemption 2 has my favorite story but this is so close.

It feels like an iconic mob movie with so many realistic and brilliantly acted characters. Tommy himself really has that Robert De Niro charm, especially as he kind of looks like him.

Gameplay is very simple but the shoot-outs are so gory and realistic. Some missions such as the stealth ones are just ok but the story just kept me engaged to get through them.

I did play this on a PS5 with ps now, although I was expecting the game to look good i was surprised by just how fantastic it looks. The game captures the period perfectly and the look of each character just feels so real and human. The music was so fitting for the time, made that trailing mission feel like a comedy though.

The free roam mode is good but there isn't much to do. It's more of a side thing and just exploring all the detailed locations was interesting.

A game I was just so glad was great and much better than I thought. From a narative perspective it is a game I will always think about.

Beautiful World and Excellent Story

The first time I played Mafia definitive edition, I was blown away by how beautiful the world actually looks. It feels exactly like 1930s New York and driving through it is a treat. The other massive strength of this game is the good characters, voice acting, and story. The characters feel like real people, and the relationship with Paulie is fleshed out particularly well. The story is done masterfully, conveying the various eras of the Salieri vs Morello war and how Tommy's place in the mafia and his relationship with Sarah grows. The end the story gives a great conclusion on the downfalls of joining the mafia and how it is a contract that you can't escape.

The only negative that I would give this game is that it doesn't take advantage of the beautiful world that it has created. After the game, there is not much to do besides collect magazines and foxes, which is quite boring. The game would have a lot more content if it had more places where you could interact with characters and complete missions. However, the main story is amazing and is definitely worth playing.

A must-have

I enjoyed this game very much. It remind me a lot of the gangsters movies. The story its quite interesting to follow and we can see a very good twist and revelations. That make the game very interesting until the end. The gameplay was good too but i didnt like the fight gameplay i found it pretty boring. The game have some strong moments and it defintely have a cinema side in the game that i really enjoyed. I recommend to other gamers to play the game even more to players who didnt do the first mafia.

One of the best remakes ever made!

I love gangster stories. Scarface, The Godfather Part I, I loved those movies. Grand Theft Auto V, also a gangster game was also great. So when Mafia: Definitive Edition was free to play with PS Plus I took the chance. And what should I say, it is extraordinary!

Let me start with the story, which is just fantastic. It is quite linear but a better written story you get not so often. You understand every decision the main character makes, you really care for him and his friends. So when the end unfolds before my eyes it touched me hard. This is a story you will not likely get often these days, so it is important that 2k games remade it for younger generations.

And that leds me to the graphics. For a remake of a 20 years old game this looks insane. You have raytracing, the city looks beautiful as hell and the characters are detailed. This is a very high quality and can compete without a doubt with modern triple A games.

And so can the gameplay. Shooting enenies never felt as smooth and uncomplicated than in Mafia. May it be the legendary Thommygun or the good old revolver every shot feels real. The combat system may be simple but that is a strength. Nevertheless the walking with the character sometimes felt a bit fuzzy but that is a minor criticism.

And then last but not least there is the music. There are only one or two themes in the game, but those are sensational. It felt like Ennio Morricone hinself had written them and they reminded me of The Godfather. This music has its place on my playlist, for sure!

So what shall I say else? Play this game if you like a good story. It is rather short so everybody has the time to play it. This game will forever have a olace in my heart as one of the best mafia stories of all time!

Best game of 2020 if not best game on Xbox

I remember buying the original game on PC back in 2002 and enjoyed it. This game blows Mafia 2 and 3 out of the water. I played this for a straight 8 hours when I first got it on Sept 24, early release. The story, graphics, music, and characters are amazing. I hardly play video games anymore but when I heard about this I had to jump back in and I am glad I did definitely worth the $40 dollars I paid. The game was a good length and the gameplay was amazing. The only complaint I have I wish it was more open world so you could do side quests or something more. Also a mission or two could have been improved a little better to make the game a tad more realistic. However this game in my opinion is one of the best games I have ever played I normally do not get excited about current games but if you have not played this one you will not be disappointed,

Leave the mission. Take a screenshot.

This is a frustrating game to review. Why? Because there's barely any game in there. If they could put a "skip game" button and get away with it they would. The gun combat is passable and the driving mechanics are bad even with a controller. The story is okay and it has some great scenes but it's common and not that challenging and the final message "it's all about family" falls flat because we know nothing about the protagonist's family. His wife (Sarah) is interesting but we barely get to know her before she disappears from the game. I get that this is a remake, but they needed to add so many features in the game to excuse the open world design. As it stands the "open world" is just filler for the next mission and the devs knew that because they put a "skip driving" button in the game. All the Mafia games get criticized for their open worlds and the lack of activities but even in Mafia II (a game which I love) you get to do more things than in here.

"So why do you recommend it?" I hear you ask.

I recommend it because it's gorgeous! I love noir films and this game filled a hole in my soul because I need more noir games. My biggest dilemma throughout my play-through was if I should have on or off the noir mode. God this games nails the aesthetics!!! For that reason alone I replayed Chapter 9: A Trip to the Country (best mission in the game) twice and I want again! The color palettes used for MDE are spectacular I just want to replay the game one time with noir mode on and another off just for the visuals alone! I just love to look at it but it frustrates me because I love Mafia II and I thought they would improve upon it. But here you get to do less things for an inferior story. Also, if there's one game that needs a photo mode, this is the one!

In the end, I am disappointed but I also want to replay it, so I guess the game must have done something right. To my mind, it's like a very beautiful person that attracts you and you want to get to know it better, only to realize in the end that it's shallow and can't form proper sentences.

How NOT TO remake a game

"Mafia: the City of Lost Heaven" from 2002 is the best Mafia game ever released. So when a remake was announced all the fans of the franchise were excited to see an already amazing story with great characters with modern graphics and whatever other advancements that could be incorporated in the game, without changing core elements of the original.

However, this ends up being an "almost" game. It almost develops the story, the characters, the gameplay. Mafia Definitive Edition is a Mafia 3 mod with the first game story in it. It is sad how they removed a lot of the content of the game and turned some 30 minutes of gameplay in 3 minutes cutscenes, so the story feels rushed at points, when in the original it felt more like a slow burn. There's also a small detail, in all missions you would have to drive back home, that on itself was a great way to familiarise yourself with the city, specially considering how the game has car chases - sure you can look at the map whenever, but knowing a region makes the chase easier - and you are also able to look around the city and that is one thing the Definitive Edition had to explore better, there are several landmarks around the city, but the player doesn't get the opportunity to see because part of the driving was cut from the game. There are some additional content, both in the story and for the characters, but they aren't necessarily good and sometimes it feels like those additions didn't consider other aspects within the game.

One of the things that annoyed me the most, and it isn't the case in lower difficulties, is how the "Classic" mode really screws the gameplay. The aim is simply terrible, it seems like you don't hit what you aim and the recoil? Your handgun behaves just like a shotgun. That isn't the "classic" experience, is the original gameplay outdated? Yes, but shooting in the original is way better than in this one.

Also I hated the voice acting, I hate how Tommy sounds like a jackass now, I hate how dumb they made Paulie. Some people say the original voice acting felt more amateur-ish, and I agree, but even so it made more sense with the characters. Thomas was a cab driver, why does he talk like he was always part of the cosa nostra? Just as he calls himself an "average Joe", both the dialogue makes him something he isn't and the fact this game was basically imported from Mafia 3, where the protagonist is a former military, the gameplay feels like he also is a military, when he isn't.

I used to be more lenient with the rating of this game, I don't care anymore. It is bad, it is not because it has adapted the best mafia game that I will score based on the original, they should have done better with it.

A game you won't forget

The first Mafia game was one of the early pioneers of cinematic, open-world action, and an earnest Czech-made homage to Prohibition-era American crime fiction. Back then, the criminals were Italian, the cops were Irish, and the hooch was Canadian. Mafia: Definitive Edition is a captivating, reverent, and regularly gorgeous re-imagining of that highly-respected but not-so-gracefully aged 2002 original. Its brisk pace meant it was over for me within a weekend - and there are definitely a few mission-stalling bugs and rough edges - but it's otherwise proven to be a very enjoyable way to re-experience one of my favourite games of the early 2000s. Set throughout the 1930s, including the final years of Prohibition, the story of Mafia unfolds in the melodramatically-named city of Lost Heaven. It's a wonderfully-realised riff on Chicago, one of the key epicentres of organised crime during the gangster era. After a well-crafted intro that splendidly mimics the swooping tour of Lost Heaven that preceded the 2002 original, Mafia: Definitive Edition wastes little time getting down to the business of its 20 missions.

Nothing lasts forever: money, jobs, and even friends... But Family, Family is forever.

How much meaning is in that phrase, and how the game skillfully demonstrates its meaning with its story. I've never played the original version of this game, but I was already familiar with its sequel, Mafia 2, from my childhood on the PS3.

As I am writing my opinion, I realized that I have gone through a game with one of the strongest plots I have ever played. And there are many such games, but this one... This game affected me a lot and taught me a lot of things for the future.

And what beautiful graphics in the re-release, it's just a must see. How the sun shines and illuminates this city with full, how it rains completely covering the city with clouds. And the music it's divine and perfect for the experience. It's like you're a resident of the big cities in the early 1930's, a tourist so to speak.

I was very impressed with the game and I'm glad I didn't waste my money on it. I would even erase my memory and buy it again to enjoy this tragic story of the mafia world.
