So reads the synopsis of Under the Knife, a new Korean-Swedish co-produced horror. Written and produced by Josh Hoffman and starring Kim Jyeong-ah and Kim Jin-geun, who previously appeared in the K-horrors Acacia (2003) and Voices (2007), the movie was filmed on location in South Korea, Japan and the United States. Given the mass prevalence of plastic surgery in Korean society and the potential for body horror when anyone ends up in an operating theater, the theme is a ripe fit for K-horror. It’s not often that you run across aspiring genre directors who are still in their teens so when we discovered a brand new Kickstarter campaign for Carver, an upcoming indie slasher from the filmmaking team of Ron Diprimio and his 13-year-old daughter Emily Diprimio, we immediately took notice.

In the campaign, the Diprimios’ describe Carver as, “a throwback 80’s style slasher that follows a group of teenagers who are haunted by a despicable act they committed on Halloween when they were younger.

Chicago – Lionsgate and After Dark Films’ recently released their third collection of “8 Films to Die For” and this year proved to be the most uninspiring octet to date. With fewer risks taken than the last two years and less extreme failures or successes, “After Dark Horrorfest III” is terrifyingly dull.

Overall DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 What makes this year’s collection rather forgettable is the lack of extremes on either side of the rating spectrum. The first two years produced some truly excellent genre gems including “Borderland,” “The Hamiltons,” and “The Abandoned.” At the same time, movies like “Dead Lake,” “Undead,” and “Nightmare Man” should be buried in a deep hole and never see the light of day again.

Alright, I'm finally done Lionsgate's After Dark Horrorfest III box and I'm glad to report the films all manage to stay consistently entertaining.

From Within is not a perfect film by any means but it's easily the best movie from the After Dark Horrorfest III line-up. On the surface, it's about a suicide curse that infects an intensely religious small town in Southern America but there is a strong subtext about how fear and religious fervor can make people do unimaginable evil. Actually, it's very similar to the basic theme running through The Mist and as I watched it I thought to myself that this would be the kind of story that Stephen King would like.
