It's a perfect adaptation of many scenes from the 1995 anime and others with some ideas from the manga. It is anime translated into a live-action big buster Hollywood movie, get over the false drama queens that say it is white washing as there is even Beat Kitano, a renown Japanese actor and he is only speaking Japanese with English subs! I would add that the result is a good example on how to "Hollywood-wash" an entire anime series better than anything else. Great stuff overall, go see it, if you like sci-fi, it won't be disappointing!
I watched this without watching the original. I was going to at first, but gave up believing that I'll have expectations that are too high or get brainwashed somehow. I didn't want to review this movie as a live- action remake, but just a movie.
I wish I could go into more detail, but I have nothing more to say. I don't know if I recommend this movie or not in general, but give it a try if you like cyberpunk action movies or a fan of the original anime. Or just if you like Scarlett Johansson.

- TriviaIn an establishing shot of the city, a Pan Am advert can be seen in the top left. The bankrupt airlines inclusion is a reference to Blade Runner (1982) which also had an in-film advert for them.
- ErroresWhen Major shoots the geisha robot in the face, the robot's face is open, revealing its inner workings. The face then closes and, when next seen, the impact patterns from the bullets smoothly cross the seams of the closed face which they would not do if the face were shot when open.
