Creature Commandos Fans Should Watch This Underrated Adult Swim Cartoon
Image
Recently, the DC Universe — DC Comics' newly retooled cinematic universe — officially came to life with the edgy adult cartoon Creature Commandos. Despite starring DC characters who most people have never even heard of, the series was such a well-made success that its second season was greenlit almost as soon as the first season finale aired. With Creature Commandos Season 2 still a long way off, fans have no other choice but to look to other adult cartoons to pass the time.

Enter Black Dynamite, Adult Swim's animated adaptation of the cult parody movie of the same name from roughly a decade ago. At first glance, Creature Commandos and Black Dynamite have next to nothing in common, let alone crossover appeal between their respective target audiences. After all, one is based on a superhero team's comics, and the other is a parody of the '70s. However, the opposite couldn't be more true.

Don’t Mess with Grandma: Michael Jai White action comedy reaches Tubi later this month
Ten years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. The follow-ups planned for that film haven’t made it into production, but now, Krawczyk is back with the action comedy Don’t Mess with Grandma (which was filmed under the title Sunset Superman), starring Michael Jai White. I had the chance to watch the movie several months ago and had a lot of fun with it (you can read my 8/10 review at This Link), and a larger audience will have the opportunity to enjoy it when it reaches the free streaming service Tubi on January 24th!

Don’t Mess with Grandma shows us what happens when a drunk Army ranger must fight off the vicious robbers who plan to loot the cabin belonging to his sweet,...

Cedric Yarbrough Explains 'Black Dynamite's Best Line was Improvised.
Image
Black Dynamite is nothing short of a cult classic. Starring Michael Jai White as the eponymous hero, the comedy is filled with dozens of memorable lines, which (like Borat), fans are still incessantly quoting to this day. While fiendish Dr. Wu's "zest for Kung-Fu treachery," "Who the hell is interrupting my kung-fu?" and "Haha! I threw that sh*t before I walked in the room!" are all classics, there is one line that stands above them all as the most quotable from the movie. But, according to Cedric Yarbrough, who delivered the line, it was completely improvised.

MovieWeb recently had the pleasure of speaking to Cedric Yarbrough about his biggest dramatic role to date in Clint Eastwood's Juror #2. But, we couldn't help but ask about his time on Black Dynamite during the conversation. When asked, "How many times do fans come up and say that they're 'declaring war on...

'Why Do You Want the Same Sh-t?': Major Anime Creator Responds to Fans Asking for More Samurai Champloo
Image
LeSean Thomas, the first African-American animator to direct anime in Japan, has been driven to work in animation for the majority of his life. However, the prominent creator is dismayed by his audiences continuously asking for shows like Vinland Saga or Samurai Champloo instead of more innovative projects that push conventional boundaries.

Per Anime News Network, The Japan Society in New York City recently hosted an event called "Foreign Exchanges: Anime Inspirations & Visionaries with LeSean Thomas." While speaking at three talks organized by Coach Mike of "The ImagiNation Project," Thomas discusses the experiences he had while directing major anime projects like Cannon Busters (2019) and Yasuke (2021). Many criticized the latter series at the time of its release due to its incorporation of fantasy and mecha elements into a historical drama story. However, Thomas wishes to avoid "retreading" ground seen in other works -- something he has accused other Black directors of doing.

Drop Everything and Watch This Underrated Mixed Martial Arts Action Movie on Netflix
Image
Michael Jai White might be one of the most underrated action stars in the game, which is a shame considering his resume. Not only did White craft a modern-day cult classic in Black Dynamite, but he also is the first African American actor to headline a superhero movie in Spawn. White's best known for putting his martial arts skills to use in a majority of his projects, which is only eclipsed by his steely glare and often stoic presence. But the film where he really made an impression is 2009's Blood and Bone, directed by Ben Ramsey. Blood and Bone is unique in that it has a surprisingly deep story for an action movie not to mention the fact that it kickstarted the careers of several action movie directors. It also features what might be White's best performance to date.

Kevin Costner's John Dutton Look For Yellowstone Was Created By A Marvel Veteran

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

With all due respect, costume designers aren't often amongst the filmmakers who get a lot of name recognition outside of the industry. Actors, a number of directors, and even certain screenwriters are afforded that luxury, but it (sadly) doesn't often extend to other roles on a set. In spite of this, two-time Oscar-winner Ruth E. Carter of "Black Panther" fame has become one of the biggest name in the business when it comes to costuming. She's been at it for going on four decades and has been doing some of the best work of her career in recent years. Indeed, on top of her film work, Carter is also a major part of the biggest show on cable right now: "Yellowstone."

As Taylor Sheridan was putting together his now-wildly popular Western series for Paramount Network, Carter was coming off of...

Action Icon Michael Jai Whites Horror Comedy Don't Mess With Grandma Hailed as Tubi Hit
Black Dynamite (2009)
It sounds like Tubi has their hands on an action-comedy gem, as Black Dynamite and Blood and Bone star Michael Jai White returns to the genre in Dont Mess With Grandma. The movie has now debuted at Fantastic Fest and the first reviews hail Dont Mess With Grandma (which was formerly titled Sunset Superman) as the perfect twist on the home invasion movie, with White proving once again that he is the unsung hero of action movies.

We begin with Cody Hamman of JoBlo, who awarded the action comedy a stellar score of 8/10, calling Dont Mess With Grandma one of Whites best.

Krawczyk may not be fond of the title Dont Mess with Grandma, but if all goes well, this is a title well be hearing action and comedy fans mention frequently in the future, because the movie is a blast to watch and deserves to be referenced and recommended.

‘Don’t Mess With Grandma’ Review – Home Invasion Goes Awry in Violent Comedy [Ff 2024]
Image
Home invasion films are a dime a dozen nowadays, with this year alone seeing the wide releases of The Strangers: Chapter One and Abigail. But surplus can often breed creativity, with filmmakers forced to seek innovative ways to make their films stand out from the pack. That’s just what Jason Krawczyk (He Never Died) does with Don’t Mess With Grandma, a gleefully violent comedy that has fun subverting various home invasion tropes.

While working for his company Trusted Trays, a meal delivery service that caters to the elderly, mild-mannered Jasper (Michael Jai White) also drives two hours outside of his hometown every night to do chores for his cantankerous grandmother Granna (Jackie Richardson). While fixing her bathroom sink one evening, Granna’s house falls victim to a home invasion by a ragtag group of bumbling thieves led by Stan (a nearly unrecognizable Billy Zane). Little do these masked burglars...

7 Best Shows Like ‘Cobra Kai’ To Watch If You Love The Series

Cobra Kai Season 6 is finally here and it’s even better than the last one, which no one thought was possible. The Netflix series follows the story of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), who has kind of left bullying and turned into a karate instructor. In the series, Johnny inspires weak kids to learn karate so that they can stand up to their bullies and fight to protect themselves. Still, everything goes wrong in a very entertaining way and many iconic characters from the Karate Kid movies appear in the series. So, if you love the teen drama, action comedy, and martial arts in Cobra Kai here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 2.

‘Outlaw Johnny Black’ Review: An Amusing Homage to Spaghetti Western and Blaxploitation Elements
Image
Tipping their Stetsons to a passel of 1960s Spaghetti Westerns — everything from “A Fistful of Dollars” to “They Call Me Trinity” — and the sort of 1970s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, director-star Michael Jai White and co-star (and co-writer) Byron Keith Minns have cobbled together “Outlaw Johnny Black,” a fitfully funny but uncomfortably overlong entertainment best appreciated by movie buffs who share the pair’s affection for the genre tropes and stereotypes they seriocomically recycle.

Not nearly as free-wheeling and fleet-footed as “Black Dynamite,” the 2009 satirical comedy that cast White as a Shaft-like action hero, the new film nonetheless provides more than a few good laughs, even when it seems to be taking horse opera clichés a tad too respectfully, and showcases a fine cast of actors dedicated to both the silliness and the seriousness of the enterprise.

‘Outlaw Johnny Black’ Star-Director Michael Jai White on Why He Didn’t Make a Direct Sequel to ‘Black Dynamite’
Image
In January 2009, during a midnight screening at Sundance, Michael Jai White knew he had something special in Black Dynamite. Nine months later, the Blaxploitation spoof’s limited theatrical release and minimal box office gross didn’t stop its immediate fate as a cult classic. Demand for a sequel soon followed, and so White, as co-writer of the film, penned a direct sequel that struggled to get off the ground due to creative differences with a producer.

Consequently, White went back to the drawing board and pursued an idea he had at the same time as Black Dynamite’s conception. If that action-comedy paid homage to Blaxploitation films through parody, then it would only make sense to take a similar approach with other genres. So, White revisited his earlier ideas for three other genre exercises including a horror movie, a kung fu movie and a Western. That Western is now known as Outlaw Johnny Black,...

Michael Jai White On Outlaw Johnny Black & Crating A Comedy Western
Image
Michael Jai White wanted to create a trilogy of movies set in different time periods, with Outlaw Johnny Black as a Western homage. Review: They Cloned Tyrone Gives John Boyega the Showcase He Deserves
Image
There’s a scene in John Singleton’s 1991 masterpiece, Boyz n the Hood, in which Laurence Fishburne, playing a man who goes by ‘Furious,’ delivers an impromptu sermon in front of a real estate billboard. He asks his curious onlookers, “Why is it that there’s a gunshop on almost every corner in this community?”

“Why?” an older resident asks.

“I’ll tell you why,” Furious replies. “The same reason that there’s a liquor store on almost every corner in the black community. Why? They want us to kill ourselves.”

They Cloned Tyrone, the directorial debut of Juel Taylor, who co-wrote the script for Creed II, and was one of a bevy of writers to take a crack at Space Jam: A New Legacy, poses similar questions to those asked by Furious, but takes a far more eccentric approach.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: June 2023
Image
With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.

It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.

The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

The Outlaw Johnny Black: Why You Should Be Excited for the Black Dynamite Spiritual Sequel
Image
The "blaxploitation" genre is an especially fascinating one. A product of the 1970s, it came about due to a variety of coalescing factors, from a gradual change in race relations brought about at the time to more readily-available resources for independent creators. Despite the negative connotations the name suggests, blaxploitation films filled a niche in the moviegoer market at the time: they were films made by black filmmakers for predominantly black audiences, featuring black characters overcoming issues the black community faced. It also helped that these films are thoroughly entertaining, displaying a passion for filmmaking that overcomes low budgets and questionable production quality.

It's important to know this for Michael Jai White's upcoming western, The Outlaw Johnny Black. A spiritual sequel to Black Dynamite, White's own hilariously-over-the-top tribute to blaxploitation films, The Outlaw Johnny Black will see him transported to the wild west in an equally-off-the-wall adventure. Seeing as...

‘Killer Kites’ Review
Image
Stars: Manon Pages, Austin Naulty, Carter Simoneaux | Written by Austin Frosch | Directed by Austin Frosch, Paul Dale

Tommy Wiseau has a lot to answer for. While he did not create the “bad movie” with 2003’s The Room, his misguided attempt to deliver “the passion of Tennessee Williams” resulted in a cult film which has regular theatre showings across the world. Many films followed to try and create a similar success story, but such a thing cannot be manufactured, and that is sadly evident in this work by co-directors Austin Frosch and Paul Dale.

After her grandma dies, Abby (Manon Pages) inherits a mysterious kite which she gives to her brother. After his mysterious death, the kite disappears and the body count rises, leaving Abby to search for the truth amidst a strange supernatural plot. From the historical photos with kites superimposed on them, complete with the hint at who assassinated JFK,...

The Outlaw Johnny Black Trailer Borrows From Blazing Saddles
Image
With the release of the teaser trailer for the upcoming western parody, The Outlaw Johnny Black, fans of Michael Jai White's comedic presence have something to look forward to on the big screen later in 2023. Unsurprisingly, the film, written and directed by White, contains the same humorous elements that made his previous movie spoof, Black Dynamite, an underground cult classic. Yet, the trailer highlights include scenes reminiscent of another iconic comedy from almost 50 years ago.

The new Samuel Goldwyn film depicts White as Johnny Black, a man on the run trying to avenge his father's death. While the plot does use some similar threads as its spiritual predecessor, it's set in the old west instead of the drug-riddled streets of the 1970s. However, specific references made throughout the teaser borrow from Mel Brooks' famous Western comedy, Blazing Saddles.
